Abstract:Oat is an important grain and forage crop and is now being cultivated as a promising forage crop in northern China. Increased land degradation and shortage of forage resources for animal production over-winter have accentuated the need for alternative cropping systems in arid regions of northern China (<45°N) while short frost-free period, low precipitation, poor soil quality and cool temperatures are major limitations to cereal grain production. Oats have extremely wide environmental adaptability on marginal lands and the production cost is also cheaper than silage maize; therefore oat is an optimal crop with dual use as cereal and forage. Recently, the Baicheng Academy of Agricultural ScienceS has developed three different early maturing naked oat (Avena sativa L.) lines (Baiyan 9015, Baiyan 9017 and Baiyan 9044) which can reach maturity when seeded both summer and autumn in a double cropping system in the regions around 45°N. This double cropping system can provide more economic return compared with traditional mono-cropped corn cultivation. Furthermore, in the traditional single small grain cereal cropping system, bare ground after harvest leads to severe water and wind erosions. During the cropping season, oat can provide maximum vegetation cover over the soil surface and reduce wind erosion in the soil. Thus, development of oat-based cropping system could be an effective way for the sustainable agricultural development in arid regions of northern China.
