In the short run, price fluctuations are mostly attributable to shocks that have permanent effects on prices and money but not on real output. These shocks also account for a large proportion of fluctuations in money, and strongly influence the movements of output.

Abstract:This paper studies the stability of monetary relations in the course of China's economic development. An error-correction model to explain inflation from 1954 to 2002 is presented that passes the Chow test of parameter stability in spite of substantial institutional changes. AVAR explaining the logs of the changes in the price level, output and money supply yields impulse responses that support the Friedman proposition that output reacts to money shocks first but the effect is short-lived and prices react later but the effect lasts longer. A similar VAR using US data shows the same pattern of impulse responses as the Chinese case, confirming the universality of the Friedman proposition.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the effect of external factors which include oil price,world interest rates,exchange rate of U.S.dollar and foreign demand on China's business cycles.Estimated structural vector autoregression model with block exogeneity shows that external shocks are an important source of macroeconomic fluctuations in China.Supply and demand shocks play the same role,but the latter is persistent.In the period of financial crisis,demand shock is more important than supply shock.The policy implication is that government should implement expansionary fiscal policy to replace declining private investment in order to stimulate domestic demand and mitigate permanent shock of foreign demand to economy.

Abstract:Using the structural vector autoregression model, we estimate the current responses of monetary policy to contemporaneous shocks from macroeconomic variables. Our findings indicate that the People's Bank of China responded to inflation and output changes, but did not react to asset price fluctuations during the period from January 1997 to March 2010. The optimal monetary responses to exogenous shocks are also examined. It is revealed that using asset prices to formulate monetary policy would not help to improve monetary authorities' performance in lowering the volatilities of output growth and inflation while keeping output growth and inflation in their safety zones. The effectiveness of monetary policy and fiscal policy in reacting to external shocks is also discussed.

Abstract:The typical financial environment in the transition economy is financial repression,its biggest characteristics is interest rate control and exchange rate control.The authors propose that interest rate and exchange rate control decrease the cost of holding money and increase the money demand directly,and the resulting distortion of investment and foreign trade structure increases money demand indirectly.China's high money growth is resulted by meeting excess money demand.According to the definition of money,the paper uses China's 1994Q1-2010Q2 data to estimate the integration and error correcting model in the Engle-Granger two-step framework. The empirical results support the financial repression hypothesis.With the estimate result,the authors conclude that financial repression at least has increased the current M2/GDP by 30%.

Abstract:Since the founding of the People's Republic more than forty years ago, China has experienced numerous economic cycles and economic readjustments. One of the characteristic regularities of China's economic development is the cyclic fluctuation manifested as the rise-fall-rise again-fall again of the economic growth rate, which is accompanied by a recurrent vacillation of expansion-retrenchment (readjustment)-expansion again-retrenchment again (readjustment again) in economic policy. The wide fluctuations are one of the most distinctive features of China's economic development, as well as one of the direct causes of contradictions and conflicts in Chinese society. The fluctuation coefficient of China's economy is considerably higher than it is in the Western countries, and far higher than the world average. Between 1960 and 1989, the fluctuation coefficient of China's economy was 1.8 times those of Yugoslavia, Britain, and India; 2.2 times that of the United States; 2.6 times that of Japan; 3.0 times that of South Korea; 3.4 times that of the former Soviet Union; and 4.3 times the world average. A large body of data and many facts indicate that the cyclic fluctuations in China's economy have been painfully obvious, that economic growth has been extremely unstable, and that these violent and frequent cyclic oscillations have seriously impeded any sustainable economic development in China.

Abstract:Based on the fact that domestic economy has frequently fluctuated in recent years,this paper builds up a DSGE model with cost-push,preference,technology and monetary policy shock,and also inspects the reason for economic fluctuation using the methods of impulse response analysis and variance decomposition.It is found that output volatility is caused by four kinds of shocks,among which cost-push shock contributed most.Inflation volatility is mainly driven by cost-push shock and monetary policy shock,and the impact of preference shock and technology shock is small.Furthermore,a counterfactual simulation analysis also confirms this conclusion,which also reveals the stylized fact that China's rapid economic growth depends on the high cost and the mode of China's economic development is extensive in recent years.
Understanding Equilibrium,Misalignment,Volatility and Adjustment of RMB Exchange Rate

Abstract:This paper differentiates the output market equilibrium exchange rate,misalignment and volatility from asset market, and gets short-term or long-term value of RMB equilibrium exchange rate. The findings indicate that the RMB is not seriously overvalued or undervalued, and real exchange rate(RER)is undervalued in the output market, which has an enlarging trend, but overvalued in the asset market. The long-run volatility in the output market mostly stems from relative supply impact, but mechanism for its adjustment and relative monetary supply impact account for most of the short-run variations in the asset market. Policy implication indicates that at least controlled capital account decreases risk premium, and allows decision maker to adjust short-term volatility of the RER, then enlarge the volatility range in order to ease appreciation expectation, which can eliminate short-term misalignment in the asset market; Decision makers can only regard long-run equilibrium exchange rate as target exchange rate of appreciation given the determinant factors of the long-term volatility, which can realize the equilibrium between internal and external economy by force of supply management policy on condition that demand management policy is invalid.

Abstract:Based on the consideration of the mechanism of the effect of the real and fictitious economies on the money supply,the paper builds a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium(DSGE)model with real and fictitious sectors to make the judgment on whether China's money supply is endogenous or exogenous and study the influence of money demand and speculative shock on the macroeconomic stability.The result shows that China's money supply is endogenous,and money demand shocks and speculative attacks have a great impact on the money supply,and then have a significant influence on inflation.Therefore,strengthening the guidance and management of public expectations,thereby weakening the impact of money demand shocks and speculative attacks will have great significance to prevent and curb inflation in China.

Abstract:The demand for money in China is estimated separately for the periods before and after the economic reform. Besides the traditional transactions demand variable, the expected rate of inflation (as a measure of the opportunity cost of holding money) and the monetization process are also incorporated into the demand function. The preliminary results show that the demand for money in China has changed in response to the institutional changes during the economic reform. Adding the monetization and inflation expectation variables into the money demand function has enhanced significantly its explanatory power.

Abstract:This paper develops a New Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with energy factors to study various channels through which C hina's economic fluctuations are linked to energy price shocks and to search for the optimal monetary policy to cope with energy price shocks. We conclude that there are channels through which changes in energy prices will have the following cause–effect relationships. First, a rise in energy price as a negative technology shock will raise the costs of providing capital services per unit of capital, thereby reducing output. Second, a rising energy price distorts the intertemporal choices of households and firms, creating downward pressure on the expected future return on capital. Third, an energy price shock places upward pressure on the marginal costs associated with an increase in inflation. Numerical simulation results show that a positive energy price shock has a positive effect on energy technology improvements. In addition, the effects of energy price shocks can be mitigated by nominal rigidities, and interest rate rules will determine the magnitude of those effects. Using the efficient frontier method, we also show that optimal monetary policy in C hina should help control energy price volatility.

Abstract:Since China joined the WTO in 2001, the Chinese economy has grown very rapidly, especially, the tradable goods sector. However, the Chinese real exchange rate did not exhibit a persistent and stable appreciation until 2005. This is a puzzling fact that is inconsistent with theories. This paper documents several stylized facts during the economic transition and argues that two features of Chinese economy may help explain the puzzling real exchange rate pattern for Chinese economy: (i) the faster total factor productivity (TFP) growth in export sector compared with the import sector; (ii) excess supply of unskilled labor. Our hypotheses are supported by cross-country evidence. Furthermore, we construct a small open economy model with an H-O trade structure and show that, due to heterogeneous skilled labor intensity in export and import sectors, the faster TFP growth in the export sector over that in the import sector will lead to the decline of return to capital and the rise of skilled wage. Therefore, the decrease of return to capital and the low unskilled wage, which is caused by the excess supply of unskilled labor, inhibit the rise in the relative price of non-tradable goods to tradable goods as well as the appreciation of real exchange rate. Finally, we show that a dynamic small open economy model with multiple tradable goods sectors does fairly well in explaining the Chinese real exchange rate and other stylized facts in the economic transition.

Abstract:Since 1978,the RMB real exchange rate has shown a long-term depreciation trend.Based on the analysis of China's economic reform process,this paper shed light on the internal mechanisms of the real exchange rate depreciation,and argued this phenomenon could be contributed to the institutional change and technological progress during the reform,instead of so-called manipulation.In addition,current internal and external economic imbalances are essentially caused by the distorted economic structure.This article believes that in order to alleviate the appreciation pressure on RMB,the best choice is to implement in-depth reforms in factor markets,such as land,labor and natural resources market.

Abstract:This paper identifies and analyzes the impact of the shocks of money supply and demand on fluctuations of output and inflation,basing on the Bayesian estimated New Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model.Results show that,the impact of money supply shocks on output and inflation fluctuations in the same direction,but no significant effect on out put volatility,and can only explain less than 2% of output fluctuations;the impact on inflation volatility is relatively strong in the long term and can interpret more than 26% of inflation fluctuations.However,the impact of money demand shocks on output and inflation fluctuations is not significant in the long term and can only explain less than 0.6% of output and inflation fluctuations.Thus,in response to the inflation pressures,the central bank can use the quantitative monetary policy tool to further tightening monetary policy actively.

Abstract:The income velocity of money in China has been declining since the country s reform. By studying the money demand behavior in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, we found that the marginal propensity to money demand is much higher in the non-agricultural sector. This implies that as the share of the agricultural sector in national income declines, monetary expansion is expected to meet not only the needs of income growth, but also the rapid structural shifts in the sectoral composition of income. Hence, non-inflationary monetary expansion is possible as development proceeds. This provides a new perspective in understanding the decline in the income-velocity of money in China.

Abstract:The current round of expected inflation in China is the result of declining real money purchasing power caused by the excess money supply in essence, suggesting that the persistent high ratio money supply in China in recent years can not be simply explained by"money missing". In order to test the motivation of inflation, the paper by introducing the output gap, money gap models, found that the output gap has a short-term positive impact on inflation, while the money gap is the main and continued source of inflation. Meanwhile, the real estate market has propelled China's inflation, positive results showed that the rise in house prices has a direct and significant impact on inflation and money gap, thus the control of house prices should also be an important measure of inflation regulation for the central governments.

Abstract:The mechanisms affecting housing prices were studied using the equilibrium housing prices based on classic supply/demand theory. The fluctuations of the actual housing prices were then analyzed relative to the equilibrium prices. The equilibrium prices for each area were calculated from economic statistics and housing prices in 35 China metropolitan areas. The fluctuations of the actual prices are then manifested as functions of the equilibrium price, the mean reversion, and the autocorrelation coefficient. The results show that the equilibrium prices are determined by the basic economic conditions in China and that the equilib-rium prices greatly affect the fluctuation of the actual prices, which return to the equilibrium price through self-adjustments. The data also shows that the actual prices in China have the trend of continuing to rise in the future.

Abstract:The year of 2011 is the most serious inflation year for China with its CPI up to 6.5% in July 2011 year-on-year,which was the highest in record.In theoretic circles,it is commonly recognized that monetary oversupply would lead to long-time structural inflation in China.The transmission mechanism driven by monetary supply upon prices is still the key question among academicians.This paper tries to study the time lag effect of monetary supply upon the upstream,middle and downstream prices and reflects the monetary-driven price transmission mechanism in China.Through the respective long-term co-integration test on four price indexes,error correction model(ECM) is set up to measure the long-term relationship and short-term influence of the four price indexes.In the meantime,With Granger causality test to verify the influence direction between upstream and downstream prices,using impulse function to measure the degree of influence,there comes a general feature of fluctuation in upstream and downstream prices.The research on the motive force of inflation will play a positive role in preventing inflation from further deterioration in China.
