Abstract:We propose a natural model to probe in a controlled fashion the instability of interacting vortex rings shed from the edge of an oblate spheroid disk of major diameter c, undergoing oscillations of frequency f_{0} and amplitude A. We perform a Floquet stability analysis to determine the characteristics of the instability modes, which depend strongly on the azimuthal (integer) wave number m. We vary two key control parameters, the Keulegan-Carpenter number K_{C}=2πA/c and the Stokes number β=f_{0}c^{2}/ν, where ν is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. We observe two distinct flow regimes. First, for sufficiently small β, and hence low frequency of oscillation corresponding to relatively weak interaction between sequentially shedding vortex rings, symmetry breaking occurs directly to a single unstable mode with m=1. Second, for sufficiently large yet fixed values of β, corresponding to a higher oscillation frequency and hence stronger ring-ring interaction, the onset of asymmetry is predicted to occur due to two branches of high m instabilities as the amplitude is increased, with m=1 structures being dominant only for sufficiently large values of K_{C}. These two branches can be distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The region in (K_{C},β) parameter space where these two high m instability branches arise can be described accurately in terms of naturally defined Reynolds numbers, using appropriately chosen characteristic length scales. We subsequently carry out direct numerical simulations of the fully three-dimensional flow to verify the principal characteristics of the Floquet analysis, in particular demonstrating that high wave-number symmetry-breaking generically occurs when vortex rings sequentially interact sufficiently strongly.

Abstract:The structures of the flow induced by a disk performing sinusoidal oscillations in fluid at rest are investigated mainly by means of flow visualization. We vary the Keulegan-Carpenter numbers between 0.3 and 1.5, and the Stokes numbers between 100 and 1200. Consistent with the linear stability analysis, we observe organized modes with clearly countable numbers of waves emerging as sequential vortex rings shedding from the oscillating disk. These organized modes can be further divided into two branches, which are distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The highest wavenumber m=9 is recorded in our visualization.

Abstract:Vortices are hallmarks of a wide range of nonequilibrium phenomena in fluids at multiple length scales. In this work, we numerically study the whirling motion of self-propelled soft point particles confined in circular domain, and aim at addressing the stability issue of the coherent vortex structure. By the combination of dynamical and statistical analysis at the individual particle level, we reveal the persistence of the whirling motion resulting from the subtle competition of activity and geometric confinement. In the stable whirling motion, the scenario of the coexistence of the irregular microscopic motions of individual particles and the regular global whirling motion is fundamentally different from the motion of a vortex in passive fluid. Possible orientational order coexisting with the whirling are further explored. This work shows the stability mechanism of vortical dynamics in active media under the alignment rule in confined space and may have implications in creating and harnessing macroscale coherent dynamical states by tuning the confining geometry.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally the nonlinear structures that develop from interacting vortex rings induced by a sinusoidally oscillating ellipsoidal disk in fluid at rest. We vary the scaled amplitude or Keulegan-Carpenter number 0.3 < N-KC = 2 pi Lambda/c < 1.5, where A is the oscillation amplitude and c is the major diameter of the disk, and the scaled frequency or Stokes number 100 < beta = f c(2)/nu < 1200, where f is the frequency of oscillation and. is the kinematic viscosity. Broadly consistent with global linear stability analyses, highly organized nonlinear structures with clear azimuthal wave number emerge as sequential vortex rings are shed from the disk. These organized structures exhibit wave numbers ranging from m = 2 to m = 9 and can be further divided into two distinct classes, distinguished by the phase and symmetry properties above and below the disk. We find some discrepancies between experiments and linear stability analysis, due to the inherent nonlinear mechanisms in the experiments, particulary on the boundary between the two branches, presenting unevenly distributed flow structures along the azimuthal direction.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to theoretically investigate the origin of the standing wave-like perturbation observed on the vortex rings falling through another liquid. We simplified the Navier-Stokes equation based on observational evidence from related research, and showed that there exists a steady-state velocity field with the required wave-like characteristics. For better visualisation we also plotted the velocity field.

Abstract:Numerical calculation of the free water vortex is carried out by using Reynolds stress turbulence model and PISO algorithm. VOF(Volume of Fluid) method is used to deal with the free surface problem. The detailed structure and evolution of free water vortex are obtained. It is found that free water vortex is caused by the centralization of rotation energy. The vortex swirl rests with the water rotation direction in tank. Free water vortex is quasi-Rankine's vortex and has two characteristic regions, called inspiratory hole and air uplift region.

Abstract:The natural frequency of surface wave, which has been derived from a vertically oscillating circular cylindrical vessel in inviscid fluid, was modified by considering the influence of surface tension and weak viscosity. Many flow patterns were found at different forced frequencies by numerical computation. In addition, the nonlinear amplitude equation derived in inviscid fluid was modified by adding viscous damping and the unstable regions were determined by stability analysis.

Abstract:The RUNJOB balloon-born emulsion chamber experiments have been carried out for investigating the composition and energy spectra of primary cosmic rays at energies 10-1000 TeV/nucleon. On the data of the treatment of RUNJOB` X-ray emulsion chambers exposed since 1995 to 1999 year about 50 % proton tracks were identified. In remained half of the events from proton group the one charged primary tracks were not found in the search area determined with high accuracy by the triangulation method using the several background heavy tracks. Considered methodical reasons in this paper could not explain this experimental result. The one from the probable physical reasons that is the neutrons in cosmic ray flux does not explain it too.

Abstract:The interaction between inertia‐gravity waves (IGWs) and the balance vortex in the two dimension f ‐plan shallow water fluid is investigated. When the IGWs propagate into the vortex, the two components did interact. The vortex could be deepening, and the wind structure of vortex could become asymmetry. However, as the IGWs leaving the vortex, it recovers its initial structure while the initial north‐south symmetry IGWs take on asymmetry structure. This feature is different in one dimension case. The degree of wave‐vortex interaction is not same in the whole vortex region. The distribution of the maximum variety of physical variables is almost consistent with the IGWs propagation direction. There are two regions in which the physical variables vary largest as the waves entering and leaving the vortex region. Besides the wave‐vortex interaction is also related to the initial structure, strength and propagating direction of the IGWs and the characters of vortex. In the linear dynamics the interaction is weaker, but the quality is similar to that in nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:We aim to find one highly nontrivial example of the solutions to the vortex fluid dynamical equation on the unit sphere (S^2) and compare it with the numerical simulation. Since the rigid rotating steady solution for vortex fluids on S^2 is already known to us, we consider the perturbations above it. After decomposing the perturbation of the vortex number density and vortex charge density into spherical harmonics, we find that the perturbations are propagating waves. To be precise, the velocities for different single-mode vortex number density waves are all the same, while the velocities for single-mode vortex charge density waves depend on the degree of the spherical harmonics l, which is a signal of the existence of dispersion. Meanwhile, we find that there is a beat phenomenon for the positive (or negative) vortex density wave. Numerical simulation based on the canonical equations for point vortex model agrees perfectly with our theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A bubble expanding and collapsing near a solid boundary develops a liquid jet toward the boundary. The jet leaves a torus bubble and induces vortices in the liquid that persist long after the bubble oscillations have ceased. The vortices are studied numerically in axial symmetry and compared to experiments in the literature. The flow field is visualized with different methods: vorticity with superimposed flow-direction arrows for maps at a time instant and colored-liquid-layer flow-field maps (dye advection) for following the complete long-term fluid flow up to a chosen time since bubble generation. Bubbles with equal energy—maximum radius in a free liquid Rmax∞= 500 μm—are studied for different distances Dinit from the solid boundary. The interval of normalized distances D* = Dinit/Rmax∞ from 0.4 to 1.8 is covered. Two types of vortices were reported in experiments, one moving toward the solid boundary and one moving away from it. This finding is reproduced numerically with higher resolution of the flow field and in more detail. The higher detail reveals that the two types of vortices have different rotation directions and coexist with individually varying vorticity amplitude throughout the interval studied. In a quite narrow part of the interval, the two types change their strength and extent with the result of a reversal of the dominating rotational direction of the fluid flow. Thereby, the experimentally found transition interval could be reproduced and refined. It is interesting to note that in the vortex transition interval, the erosion of a solid surface is strongly augmented.

Abstract:Dynamics and instability of a vortex ring impinging on a wall were investigated by means of large eddy simulation for two vortex core thicknesses corresponding to thin and thick vortex rings. Various fundamental mechanisms dictating the flow behaviors, such as evolution of vortical structures, formation of vortices wrapping around vortex rings, instability and breakdown of vortex rings, and transition from laminar to turbulent state, have been studied systematically. The evolution of vortical structures is elucidated and the formation of the loop-like and hair-pin vortices wrapping around the vortex rings (called briefly wrapping vortices) is clarified. Analysis of the enstrophy of wrapping vortices and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in flow field indicates that the formation and evolution of wrapping vortices are closely associated with the flow transition to turbulent state. It is found that the temporal development of wrapping vortices and the growth rate of axial flow generated around the circumference of the core region for the thin ring are faster than those for the thick ring. The azimuthal instabilities of primary and secondary vortex rings are analyzed and the development of modal energies is investigated to reveal the flow transition to turbulent state. The modal energy decay follows a characteristic -5/3 power law, indicating that the vortical flow has become turbulence. Moreover, it is identified that the TKE with a major contribution of the azimuthal component is mainly distributed in the core region of vortex rings. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight of the mechanisms relevant to the vortical flow evolution from laminar to turbulent state.

Abstract:This work introduces the "potential vorticity bucket brigade," a mechanism for explaining the resilience of vortex structures in magnetically confined fusion plasmas and geophysical flows. Drawing parallels with zonal jet formation, we show how inhomogeneous patterns of mixing can reinforce, rather than destroy non-zonal flow structure. We accomplish this through an exact stochastic Lagrangian representation of vorticity transport, together with a near-integrability property, which relates coherent flow topology to fluid relabeling symmetries. We demonstrate these ideas in the context of gradient-driven magnetized plasma turbulence, though the tools we develop here are model-agnostic and applicable beyond the system studied here.

Abstract:Singular perturbation theory of two-time scale expansions was developed both in inviscid and weak viscous fluids to investigate the motion of single surface standing wave in a liquid-filled circular cylindrical vessel, which is subject to a vertical periodical oscillation. Firstly, it is assumed that the fluid in the circular cylindrical vessel is inviscid, incompressible and the motion is irrotational, a nonlinear evolution equation of slowly varying complex amplitude, which incorporates cubic nonlinear term, external excitation and the influence of surface tension, was derived from solvability condition of high-order approximation. It shows that when forced frequency is low, the effect of surface tension on mode selection of surface wave is not important. However, when forced frequency is high, the influence of surface tension is significant, and can not be neglected. This proved that the surface tension has the function, which causes free surface returning to equilibrium location. Theoretical results much close to experimental results when the surface tension is considered. In fact, the damping will appear in actual physical system due to dissipation of viscosity of fluid. Based upon weakly viscous fluids assumption, the fluid field was divided into an outer potential flow region and an inner boundary layer region. A linear amplitude equation of slowly varying complex amplitude, which incorporates damping term and external excitation, was derived from linearized Navier–Stokes equation. The analytical expression of damping coefficient was determined and the relation between damping and other related parameters (such as viscosity, forced amplitude and depth of fluid) was presented. The nonlinear amplitude equation and a dispersion, which had been derived from the inviscid fluid approximation, were modified by adding linear damping. It was found that the modified results much reasonably close to experimental results. Moreover, the influence both of the surface tension and the weak viscosity on the mode formation was described by comparing theoretical and experimental results. The results show that when the forcing frequency is low, the viscosity of the fluid is prominent for the mode selection. However, when the forcing frequency is high, the surface tension of the fluid is prominent. Finally, instability of the surface wave is analyzed and properties of the solutions of the modified amplitude equation are determined together with phase-plane trajectories. A necessary condition of forming stable surface wave is obtained and unstable regions are illustrated.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the dynamics of surface waves excited by oscillations from a cylindrical sidewall. Particle-imaging-velocimetry measurements with fluorescent particles were used to determine the flow patterns near the sidewall of the cylindrical fluid container and to identify the locations of the evolving air–water interfaces. The high-frequency wall oscillations created four jets that originate at the cylindrical sidewall. Four vortex streets shed from the jets propagate from the sidewall to the centre of the container and subsequently excite a low-frequency gravity wave. The interaction between this gravitational surface wave and the high-frequency capillary waves was found to be responsible for creating droplet splash at the water surface. This phenomenon was first described as ‘Long-Xi’ or ‘dragon wash’ in ancient China. The physical processes for generating the droplet ejection, including the circular capillary waves, azimuthal waves, streaming jets and low-frequency gravity waves, are described in this paper.

Abstract:A vortex ring is a region where the fluid mostly spins around an imaginary axis line that forms a closed loop. It is a fundamental phenomenon for the fluid passing by an object. In general, there are two methods associated with the axisymmetric vortex generation: fluid discharge from an orifice or a nozzle, and disc start-up instantly. Recent study by Yang (2012) showed that the different mechanisms of vortex generation could lead to a similar formation process and a universal principle of the optimal vortex formation could exist. Present work is mainly based on a numerical simulation study of disc vortex ring formation. A commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics solver is employed to carry out the simulation. The simulation parameters are selected the same as those of Yang’s (2012) experimental study. The model is built with fluid passing by a 30mm diameter and 2mm thickness disc in a large computational domain. The simulation results are validated with experimental data. By studying the Iso-surface, representative values, i.e. size of both vortex ring and vortex ring core, circulation and kinetic energy during the formation phases of the vortex ring are investigated. Comparison and analyses between the numerical simulation and the experimental data will be given in detail.

Abstract:The vortex sheet always represents a thin shear layer across which there is a discontinuity in fluid velocity. We show a vertical one in a 2D water flow and simulate the interaction between its evolution and the free surface. It is quite stimulating that this phenomenon may result from a section of the seafloor lifting up along the fault. Since it also reflects the tsunami generation, the significance for this study is highlighted. We numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations to tackle this issue. By analyzing the data from computation we attempt to discover the nature of this system and to derive some rule controlling the hydrodynamic process for our problem. The identity of this flow structure and the way the free surface moves are explored as well.

Abstract:Vortices are the fundamental units of turbulent flow. Understanding their stability properties therefore provides fundamental insights on the nature of turbulence itself. In this contribution I briefly review the phenomenological aspects of the instability of elliptic streamlines, in the hydro (elliptic instability) and hydromagnetic (magneto-elliptic instability) regimes. Vortex survival in disks is a balance between vortex destruction by these mechanisms, and vortex production by others, namely, the Rossby wave instability and the baroclinic instability.
