Abstract:Despite economic growth in the post-World War II period, few developing countries have been able to catch up to the income levels in the United States or other advanced economies. Such countries remain trapped at a relative low-or middle-income level. In this article, the authors redefine the concept of income traps as situations in which income levels relative to the United States remain constantly low and with no clear sign of convergence. This approach allows them to study the issue of economic convergence (or lack of it) directly. The authors describe evidence pointing to the existence of both relative low-and middle-income traps and examine cross-country historical transitions between income groups at the global and regional levels. Finally, they point out challenges to the benchmark neoclassical growth theory, which predicts convergence to the developed world over time, and discuss existing theories with the potential to explain income traps.

Abstract:Abstract In 2007, Indermit Gill and Homi Kharas (2007), two World Bank economists, published a report titled An East Asian Renaissance: Ideas for Economic Growth, which suggested that East Asia would soon develop into a middle-income region and proposed the concept of the “middle income trap”. It should be noted that the report did not provide an in-depth interpretation of the concept, nor did it offer a clear income range for the “middle income trap”. In 2011, Homi Kharas and Harinder Kohli (2011) further elaborated on the concept, specifying that when a country escapes the poverty trap in the low-income development stage and enters into the middle-income development phase, the country may face growth stagnation and inability to further move up the ladder into the high-income range.

In the low-income stage, anemic economic growth, lagging human development, political instability and social unrest often lead to a vicious cycle in national development. Abstract:With rapid industrial upgrading along the global value chain of manufactured goods, China has transformed, within one generation, from an impoverished agrarian society to a middle-income nation as well as the largest manufacturing powerhouse in the world. This article identifies the pattern of China?s industrial upgrading and compares it with those of other successfully industrialized economies and the failed ones. We find that (i) China (since 1978) followed essentially the same path of industrial upgrading as that of Japan and the ?Asian Tigers.? These economies succeeded in catching up with the developed western world by going through three developmental stages sequentially; namely, a proto-industrialization in the rural areas, a first industrial revolution featuring mass production of labor-intensive light consumer goods, and then a second industrial revolution featuring mass production of the means of mass production (i.e., capital-intensive heavy industrial good s such as steel, machine tools, electronics, automobiles, communication and transport infrastructures). (ii) In contrast, economies stuck in the low-income trap or middle-income trap did not follow the above sequential stages of industrialization. For example, many Eastern European and Latin American countries after WWII jumped to the stage of heavy industrialization without fully developing their labor-intensive light industries, and thus stagnated in the middle-income trap. Also, there is a clear lack of proto-industrialization in the rural areas for many African economies that have remained in the low-income trap. We believe that laissez-faire and ?free market? alone is unable to trigger industrial upgrading. Instead, correct government-led bottom-up industrial policies are the key to escaping the low- and middle-income traps.

Abstract:As one of the most widely discussed terms in recent decades, the middle-income trap refers to a dilemma in which middle-income economies struggle to achieve high-income status. After becoming an upper middle-income country in 2010, China has been stuck in the middle, facing the problem of economic stagnation. This research focuses on the steps taken by the countries that have successfully escaped the middle-income trap and figures out how those actions can shed light on the policy-making in China. The conclusion drawn from the work is that the Chinese government should present a co-creation and pro-industry attitude towards private sectors for industrial upgrading and developing vocational education, enhancing the connection between schools and enterprises in providing courses and pipelining talents. This work points out the policies China can work on to escape the middle-income trap by adjusting the relationship between the government and enterprises and transforming its rich population resources into a reliable reserve of highly qualified labor forces.

Abstract:The convergence/divergence debate and plausible explanations to the process of catching-up remain highly controversial research areas in growth economics. Recently, these issues have been the subject of questionable predictions with regard future prospect for backward countries, raising concerns about the right direction of macroeconomic policy. To explore these issues, a sample of 131 countries is studied over the 1950s–2010s to identify those that have managed to catching-up, remain stagnant, or keep lagging further behind. Time-distance to the frontier and productivity decompositions, based on non-parametric methods, suggest that some countries have successfully completed already the caching-up, and it would take between 27 and 194 years for others to do so in the most optimistic scenario. But many others would never do. Policy implications drawn from the comparative analysis suggests the need to strengthen local innovation in order to increase the ability to catching-up alongside widespread reliance on technology diffusion from abroad.

Abstract:Despite great leaps in science, technology, and human civilization since World War II, many countries in the world have been stuck in “middle income” traps or remained hopelessly poor. To understand this reality,we introduce a new metric, the revealed comparative wealth (RCW), and develop a theory of global hierarchical order (GHO), which is characterized by a Zipf–Mandelbrot law (ZML) for the yearly ranked RCW for all the countries in the world. Major factors contributing to the existence of GHO have been identified. Various types of behavior, including equilibria characterized by largely constant RCW, strongly coupled advanced economies modulated by business cycles, strongly competing developing and underdeveloped economies opposite-phase locked to advanced economies, and steadily growing or decaying economies synergistically interact to create ZML. The mathematical structure of ZML imposes fundamental limits to world economic development and sheds light on why “middle income” traps have persisted.

Abstract:This article is intended to provide an updated discussion on a series of issues that the relevant literature suggests to be crucial in dealing with the challenges a middle income country may encounter in its attempts to further catch up to a higher income status. In particular, the conventional economic wisdom—ranging from the Lewis-Kuznets model to the endogenous growth approach—will be contrasted with the Schumpeterian and evolutionary views pointing to the role of capabilities and knowledge, considered as key inputs to foster economic growth. Then, attention will be turned to structural change and innovation, trying to map—using the taxonomies put forward by the innovation literature—the concrete ways through which a middle income country can engage in a technological catching-up, having in mind that developing countries are deeply involved in globalized markets where domestic innovation has to be complemented by the role played by international technological transfer. Among the ways that a middle income country can foster domestic innovation and structural change in terms of sectoral diversification and product differentiation, a recent stream of literature underscores the potentials of local innovative entrepreneurship, which will also be discussed bridging entrepreneurial studies with the development literature. Finally, the possible consequences of catching up in terms of jobs and skills will be discussed.

Abstract:China, like other middle income countries, is facing the challenges of the next stage of development as its leaders seek to guide the nation into becoming a high income country. At this same point of development, however, other countries have faltered, raising the possibility of stagnation or collapse. The stagnation of growth after reaching a level of income high enough to be call “middle income” is a phenomenon which some observers call the Middle Income Trap. In this paper we explore one of the major challenges that nations, including China, must face in the transition from middle to high income: the management of inequality. In particular, we explore the possible roots of future inequality that is associated with a nation’s underinvestment in the human capital of broad segments of its population. To meet this goal we first look at several benchmarks of successful transitions from middle to high income (e.g., the case of South Korea) and not-so-successful transitions (Mexico). We then exam more systematically the characteristics of countries that have successfully transitioned (or graduated) from middle to high income (Graduates) and those that are attempting to do so now (Aspirees). With this background, we describe the challenges that China faces in the light of rising wage rates and highly unequal income distribution today. We also document the high levels of human capital inequality in China today, a harbinger of high future inequality. In discussing the sources of the human capital inequality, in addition to the structural and institutional barriers that are discouraging many students (and their parents) from staying in school to achieve the levels of learning that we believe are necessary for preparing individuals for employment in the coming decades, we also identify severe nutritional and health problems. We believe that these nutrition and health problems, unless addressed, are creating serious China’s human capital deficiencies in poor areas of rural China and locking in decades of hard-to-address inequality. The paper ends with a call for leaders in China (and countries at the same level of income of China) to launch immediately a war on poor education, health and nutrition as one step in helping such nations avoid the Middle Income Trap in the future.

Abstract:The rapid growth and development of China's economy have drawn increasing attention from academics and business circles since it became the world's second-largest economy in 2010. However, even though the country is an economic power in the world, the GDP per capita is still low comparing with other large economies. The paper aims to focus on the economic growth of China, together with other nations that are also large economies and some are its neighbouring countries to conduct a convergence analysis on the long-term economic growth of these five countries. The conclusions not only help to enrich the theoretical model of growth, but also can reveal the factors of long-term economic growth of several major economic powers in the world, so as to provide empirical reference for the economic growth of other countries. Concisely, the selected countries of the planned paper are the United States, China, Japan, India, and South Korea, with a span of time from 1956 to 2019.

Abstract:The essence of the middle-income trap is that the income level correlate nonlinearly with its growth rates. The Williamson turn point determines whether China would fall into the trap. Based on the framework of spatial Gini coefficient,this paper applies spatial autocorrelation theory to quantify the con-tribution of implicit factors. This paper also develops the model of middle-income trap based on the Wil-liamson inverted-U curve. The results show that regional income gap has the relationship of inverted-U with GDP per capita,or more precisely,that of S-shaped curve. The results from the smooth transition regression model indicate that the current turn-point is 4 189.30 US dollar per capita. China has already passed this point since 2005. However China has not entered a “high regime”path. This paper suggests that China further implements the strategy of high starting point of regional harmonious development,forms a com-plete set of sound macroeconomic policies,with deepening the reform of income distribution system.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indicator measuring the likelihood for an economy to escape the middle income trap (MIT) and then estimates the impact of income inequality on this indicator using 1960-2019 cross-country data. Major findings include the following: (1) The likelihood of escaping MIT is relatively large for Asia, followed by Europe, Africa, North America and South America. (2) Inequality is negatively and significantly correlated with the MIT indicator, particularly in freer, high-income and MIT country groups. (3) Regarding the mechanisms, domestic investment, human capital accumulation and trade openness contribute positively to this indicator, while ageing does the opposite.

Abstract:Avoiding middle-income traps is one of the critical tasks for developing countries worldwide. Based on an analysis of policies that have contributed to Japan and South Korea achieving high economic development, this study proposes solutions to help Vietnam avoid falling into the middle-income trap. The results of the analysis of the experiences of Japan and South Korea indicate that to escape the middle-income trap, developing countries need to focus on investing in education and training, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, investing in infrastructure, enhancing international trade, boosting foreign investment, improving competitiveness in the global market, and maintaining macroeconomic stability. Building on the analysis of the economic development situation in Vietnam from 2013 to 2023, this study puts forth solutions to assist developing countries, in general, and Vietnam, in particular, in avoiding middle-income traps.

The economic development and the economic growth have been considered as equivalent terms until 1970. The economic growth is a numerical value to be able to measure the reel GDP(Gross Domestic Product) increasing rate while the economic development is a social criterion measuring the social levels of the human being such as the health, the education and the human living standard.The other problem of the developing countries achieving to the middle income level is the middle income trap. The developing countries facing to the middle income trap and aiming to the economic development can improve their human capital in order to remove it. The human capital means the aptitudes such as the knowledge and the skill to be obtained by the manpower. All these enable to increase the individual and social development and the economical prosperity.The basic condition of developing the human capital is the education and the lifelong learning. However, the more the education duration in the developing countries increases, the more the individual and social costs increase. Therefore, these countries must improve the employment during the education in order to both develop the human capital and decrease the alternative costs that would cause the education.
