Abstract:This study conducted a detailed analysis of the English translations of public signs in Chinese destinations. The definition of public tourism signs was discussed, and four kinds of these signs were classified based on functional characteristics. Taking Xiamen Kulangsu and Mount Wuyi of Fujian Province as case study objects, this paper analysed the English translation errors of public signs in Chinese destinations and suggested improved English versions of these public signs. The causes of English translation errors on public tourism signs were explored. Accordingly, suggestions were given to three groups (translators, sign-makers, managers and administrators) to solve the errors in English translation and to improve the translation quality of public signs in Chinese destinations.

Abstract:Public signs are special texts that are common in public places. And functions of them are to provide information or to remind readers of some requirements. As China strengthens exchanges with other countries in economy and culture, the translation of public signs was born at the right moment. The public sign translation is an important link in building a harmonious society, establishing an international metropolis and promoting economic development. Firstly, this paper introduces the definition of public signs and summarizes their main features and functions. Secondly, the existing literature and the results of research in China are summarized. By analyzing the problems existing in the Chinese and English public sign translation, this paper puts forward some suitable translation strategies.

Abstract:With the accelerating process of internationalization, China and the world become more and more inseparable. There are a growing number of foreigners coming to China for work and travel. Therefore, the translation of public signs is particularly important. It not only brings convenience to the tourists in China, but also helps to raise china’s image as a great power.Public signs are a special applied literary form, which is an important part of social terms. Its social functions are self-evident. Generally speaking, Public signs are the written and graphic information that can guide people’s behavior and is featured by indication, prompt, constraint and coerciveness. As a new mode of research, eco-translatology tries to depict and interpret the process of translation from the perspective of ecology, which is also the feature that eco-translatology differentiates it from the previous studies. Through combining the translation with its surrounding environment, readers can get a better understandable version. This paper employs the method of case study. By analyzing the errors existing in public sign translation, the author gives a better solution under the guidance of eco-translatology.

Abstract:Public signs are an important part of attractions in the international tourist city. Tourist attractions are filled with a large number of bilingual public signs to facilitate foreign visitors in China. In the context of translation program in Xiangxi Aizhai Wonders Tourist Area, this paper analyzes the translation of public signs in this tourist area and discusses editing translation of these public signs. Trans-editing methods like popular usage, prominent layout and highlighted extract can make public signs more accurate and lucid and highlight the application of public signs, providing the service to foreign visitors, which will achieve the cross-cultural communication effect.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of China’s overall national strength and the constant improvement of infrastructure, the national charm continues to increase. More and more foreign friends have been attracted to travel to China. The translations of public signs in scenic spots are of great importance for foreign visitors because of the language barrier and cultural difference existing between China and foreign countries. These translations should convey information accurately, providing the function of bringing convenience to visitors and spreading Chinese culture. However, in reality, there exist various problems among the translations of public signs in scenic spots, which will definitely make foreign visitors feel puzzled. So it is of great urgency to make the translation more standard. This study takes public signs of various scenic spots as the research material to explore the translation of the public signs of tourist attractions from the perspective of Skopos theory. This essay summarizes the errors and mistakes in the examples. By comparing and analyzing the unqualified translations in the examples and their polished versions, some specific translation strategies are proposed and explained in detail to provide useful guidance for the translation.

Abstract:The public sign, a “window” of a city or scenic spot, carries more information and plays the informative role in people’s daily life. The translation of public signs not merely transfers the linguistic information of the signs, but also acts as a cross-cultural communication activity. The study analyzes the types of public signs, investigates the common mistakes of English translation of public signs, and puts forward some suggestions for the public signs translation. The improvement of translators’ competence and cross-cultural awareness, the uniformity of the text, readers’ response, and the cultural context should be taken into consideration. They can contribute to the greater acceptability of public signs translation.

Abstract:Public signs, as the name card demonstrating the cultural quality and spiritual outlook of a city, play a crucial role in the external publicity of Guangzhou, an International metropolis in South China. With more and more tourists travelling to Guangzhou, the translation quality of public signs in scenic spots has become increasingly important. This paper, focusing on the public signs in scenic spots in Guangzhou, first analyzes the Chinese to English translation of public signs and finds out the translation problems and corresponding causes, then gives some suggestions on the translation methods and strategies of the Chinese to English translation of public signs in scenic spots accordingly. It is hoped that this study can provide some implications for pedagogical application and be helpful for those who follow closely the translation of public signs.

Abstract:To achieve an internationally friendly community by interacting better with the foreign nationals in its territory and improving its image in the international world, China has since 2004 made a purported effort to translate and standardize the public signs, which are notices meant for public consumption located at public places or institutions in its domain. However, it has been observed from the bilingual translation of these public signs that, there still exist some translation problems. Therefore, the author of this study after an in-depth discussion of the core concepts of the functional theory and its principles of translation, analyzed the first-hand photos of bilingual public sign and text samples obtained at vantage places utilize by foreigners. Critical observation and analysis of the samples were conducted to find out problems associated with the translated public signs in one of the oldest historical towns in China with various pictorial examples as evidences to buttress the findings and finally suggested the way forward to having Chinese- English(C- E) translation of public signs devoid of errors. The identification of these translation errors would help translators in China to pay more attention during the translation process of C-E public sign in order to lift high the image of China in the international world through the production of quality and meaningful C-E pblic signs in China. This study would also contribute a country-specific knowledge regarding the translation of public signs to the field of study as it will serve as a reference literature to other scholars.

Abstract:Accurate and proper English translation of public signs in Nanjing red tourist attractions is crucial to the dissemination of Chinese red culture. This paper firstly expounds definitions of public signs, red tourism and red tourism translation; then it points out errors in English translation of public signs in Nanjing Yuhuatai scenic spot, mainly including grammatical and spelling errors, inaccurate translation, inappropriate wording, inconsistent translations on different signs, etc., and analyzes possible reasons: complexity of language, cultural differences and context; finally, it puts forward some countermeasures for English translation of public signs in red scenic spots.

Abstract:Based on the development background of the "Road of Tang Poetry" in eastern Zhejiang, this paper discusses the influence of the non-standard Chinese-English translation of public signs along the "Road of Tang Poetry" on the development of the "Road of Tang Poetry," which to some extent hinders the acceptance and understanding of foreigners and affects the international dissemination of Chinese culture. Therefore, it is urgent to regulate the translation of public signs in scenic spots. This research studies the theory and practice of translating public signs from the perspective of translation norms discuss the problems existing in translating public signs in the vital scenic spots of "Road of Tang poetry" in eastern Zhejiang Province. This research also puts forward corresponding translation principles and strategies, hope that relevant developments can pay attention to and standardize the translation of public signs in scenic spots, to promote the promoting role of the translation of public signs in the construction of the "Road of Tang poetry" in eastern Zhejiang, and deepen the level of the foreign communication and exchanges.

Abstract:To understand the current status of Chinese-English public sign translation research in China, we summarized and analyzed 137 published studies in the past 15 years as the research corpus and founds that the study of public sign translation in China has experienced a progressive development process from the nascent stage in 2005 to climax in 2014 and then began to decline till date. Public signs translation study has attracted the attention of many scholars, and fruitful results have been achieved in terms of research content and cover areas, including the definition, features, functions, translation errors, translation principles, strategies, and theories applied to C-E public signs translation. However, there are still many deficiencies in related research, such as repetition of research content, the limited scope of investigation, lack of clear distinction from what constitutes a feature and translation principle of public signs. The study suggests that future research content of public sign translation is developed in a more diversified and in-depth direction. In terms of translator training and quality control, more public sign translation experts should be supplemented; the coverage of areas of research of public signs should also consider the rich menu language, cuisines, museum, and culture-specific items in addition to theory development as studies in these areas are limited. It is hoped that the research results will offer insight into the problems and gaps in research, and the development of relevant language policies, translation theories, and methods for public sign translation, and contribute to existing literature.

Abstract:Despite the upsurge of interest in English translation of Chinese public signs, the relevant research has long been limited to the prescriptive study. Translation error analysis and correction are the centre of inquiry of translated public signs. Few researches put translated public signs in a broader social context and probe into the root of translation problems. Inspired by the polysystem theory, this paper otherwise attempts to make a descriptive study on English translation of Chinese public sign. The English translation of a Chinese enterprise’s name in its website will be given a case study. Based on the three subdivided systems in the framework of the polysystem theory, this author will analyze how the multiple factors influences the generation and effectiveness of the translation of public signs.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy and technology, China’s overall national strength, international status and influence have increased considerably. China has entered into the cultural output era, and it is important to tell China’s stories well, spread China’s voice and present a real and comprehensive China to the world. In the past several decades, China’s practical cooperation with other countries continues to develop, as well as the larger international games and conferences, attracting a quantity of people from overseas travelling in and out of China. Most public places have offered pubic signs in bilingual language, which effectively serve people at home and abroad. The public signs have become the most direct and common medium for people around the world to get to know China. Meanwhile, the quality of public signs’ translation directly reflects the social landscape and human civilization of a country and a city. This essay will focus on the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games to be held from July to August 2023, and jointly study the 5W mode of communication with the Chinese-English Dictionary of Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games Public Signs, discuss and analyze the quality and communication effect of Chinese-English public signs in the five aspects of communication subject, content, media, audience and effect, hoping can provide some new insights to the public signs’ translation.

Abstract:In the process of building a new pattern of global tourism and promoting the transformation and upgrading of tourism structure, it is of great significance to standardize the construction of bilingual signs of cultural tourism. This paper takes the tourism and cultural entertainment sections of the English Translations of Public Signs in Baoding (Trial) as the research object and comprehensively uses literature research, questionnaire survey, qualitative analysis and other methods to point out the shortcomings of the existing research on the translation of bilingual signs in Baoding. On the basis of the research, from the four dimensions of accuracy, standardization, cultural differences and humanity of bilingual signs translation, this paper analyzes some errors in the Trial, discusses the relevant translation strategies, and gives some reasonable suggestions to the government. In this case, the construction of bilingual signs in cultural tourism will be more in line with the development goals of global tourism.
