Abstract:This study examines the impact of banking crises on corporate trade credit and the moderating role of creditor protection, using a large sample of firms from 45 countries. The findings suggest that banking crises increase firms' reliance on trade credit due to reduced lines of credit. Moreover, strong creditor protection can weaken the adverse effect of banking crises on firms' credit access. Our results are robust to a series of sensitivity tests. Finally, this study generates important policy implications. Policymakers should strengthen creditor rights protection to mitigate the credit contraction due to banking crises.

Abstract:English Abstract: Cross-border trade credit is credit extended by exporters and importers and makes up a considerable share of the trade finance instruments used in global trade. We use quarterly data on cross-border trade credit recorded in the International Investment Position at the International Monetary Fund and examine its effects on trade flows during the 2008-09 global financial crisis. Unlike previous studies, we find not only that the effects of trade credit are positive on average, but also that these effects are more pronounced during the crisis. Specifically, we find that the decrease in trade credit explains 8.9%-10.5% of the trade collapse during the crisis. In addition, we find that the effects of trade credit on trade flows are more pronounced during the crisis for countries with a low level of financial development in the pre-crisis period.

The worldwide economic crisis in the 1930s and the constant financial turmoil since the 1990s have aroused the world's attention towards how to prevent and handle the negative financial effects smoothly. The accelerating and deepening of financial globalization extends the perspectives of financial regulation to the cross-border scope. This thesis focuses on the latest development of banking regulation after the Asian financial turmoil and the challenges of international banking regulation. The outlook and challenges of financial regulation after China's accession to WTO are discussed.

Abstract:When trade uncertainty directly affects credit supply it can amplify other contractionary impulses from a deterioration in the international trade environment. Exploiting heterogeneity in banks' ex-ante exposure to trade uncertainty and loan-level data for U.S. banks, we show that an increase in trade uncertainty is associated with credit contractions that impact broad classes of borrowers and go beyond directly-affected firms. Exposed banks are more likely to curtail lending to firms that are internationally oriented, rely on trade finance, and participate in global value chains. The effects are stronger for banks with business models that support global trade and for constrained banks. Moreover, firms that borrow from exposed banks have worse real outcomes. Our results suggest that trade uncertainty can contribute to a fragmentation between banks and international trade, with negative effects for the real economy.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the link between international trade and exchange rate levels in the context of the global financial crisis (GFC) and the rise of global and regional value chains (GVCs). Using bilateral data for 72 economies over the 2001–2015 period, we find a positive relationship between the real exchange rate and export volume pre-GFC; but this relationship mostly disappears post-GFC. We also examine the impact of deepening GVCs on trade and on the exchange rate-trade link channel. The analysis confirms that increased participation in GVCs lowers the impact of the exchange rate on exports, and could be a contributing factor to weakening links between exchange rates and trade. Lastly, other structural factors, such as import composition and stock of short-term external debt of exporters and importers, seem to have a significant impact on trade performance but less impact on the exchange rate-trade link channel post-GFC.

Abstract:Abstract The “Great Trade Collapse” triggered by the 2008-2009 crisis calls for a careful assessment of the trade losses from financial crises. We adopt a more detailed perspective by looking at the response of different types of trade (i.e. consumption, intermediate, capital goods, and business services) following various types of financial crises (i.e. debt, banking, and currency crises) in 41 emerging markets. Estimations performed in the 1980-2019 period using a combination of impact assessment and local projections to capture a causal dynamic effect running from financial crises to the trade activity show that the collapse of total trade is long-lasting and mainly driven by the fall of intermediate goods and to some extent capital goods, while trade in consumption goods and business services is more resilient to crises. Therefore, financial crises could lead to considerable disruption of global value chains, as observed during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), and easily spill over from one country to another through trade linkages. The examination of heterogeneity reveals that total and sectoral trade is more severely impacted in countries with a lower share of manufacturing exports, less diversified exported products, and trading partners, with lower demand from trading partners and when associated with a deterioration of the domestic and external financial conditions and sudden stops. By contributing to the understanding of the trade effects of financial crises, our analysis provides insightful support for the design and implementation of policies aimed at coping with these effects.

Abstract:This study presents an overview of the state-of-the-art in trade credit research by examining 1191 publications between 1955 and 2019. Applying bibliometric and econometric tools, this study presents a comparative analysis of the extant research across the three sub-domains of banking and finance, production and operations, and accounting. Findings suggest that the financial emergency in the global market had resulted in a watershed moment in trade credit research. About 69 % of the literature was found to have emerged after the global economic crisis of 2008. A network analysis grouped the trade credit articles into four major and four minor clusters. The banking and financing cluster exhibited the highest growth followed by the production and operation cluster while the perspectives of accounting are yet to gain traction. Conversely, reputation of the publishing hub, empirical studies, and the production and operational dimensions of the research positively and significantly influence citations. Alongside thorough introspection, the study also provides new areas to direct the course of future research.

Abstract:<p>This study identifies and provides an estimate of the impact of bank liquidity shocks on real economic activity by exploring letter‐of‐credit import transactions in Colombia during the 2008 to 2009 global financial crisis. The detailed dataset on letter‐of‐credit transactions allows for exploiting within‐importer–exporter variation across issuing banks. The study finds substantial effects of bank liquidity shocks on letter‐of‐credit import transactions: banks that were more vulnerable to adverse liquidity shocks—proxied by the ex ante reliance on wholesale funding or borrowings from foreign banks—reduced letter‐of‐credit issuances more in both intensive and extensive margins. The study also confirms that it had real effects: importer–exporter pairs that relied more on letter‐of‐credit transactions experienced a greater reduction in their total imports in response to adverse bank liquidity shocks.</p>

Abstract:This paper proposes a model of international trade with capital accumulation and nancial intermediation. This is achieved by embedding the Melitz (2003) model into an incomplete-markets neoclassical framework with an endogenous credit market. The model preserves the analytical tractability of the original Melitz model despite nontrivial distribution of rmsnet worth and capital stocks. We use the model to examine the di¤erential e¤ects of nancial and non-nancial shocks on aggregate output and international trade ows. The model predicts that trade volume declines far more sharply and signicantly than that of output (with an elasticity larger than 3) under nancial shocks than under non-nancial shocks. The prediction is consistent with the stylized fact that most countries that experienced major nancial crises had signicantly larger and sharper contraction in exports than aggregate output (as is also true during the recent nancial crisis). In the long run, however, a deeper nancial market is a great source of "comparative advantage" it raises not only the level of aggregate productivity but also the ratio of trade volume to domestic output.

Abstract:Using accounting data for 7722 non-financial firms in 42 countries, we examine how the 2007–2009 crisis affected firm performance and how various linkages propagated shocks across borders. We isolate and compare effects from changes in business cycle, international trade, and external financing conditions, on firms' profits, sales and investment using both sectoral benchmarks and firm-specific sensitivities estimated prior to the crisis. We find that the crisis had a bigger negative impact on firms with greater sensitivity to business cycle and trade developments, particularly in countries more open to trade. Interestingly, financial openness made limited difference.

Abstract:The downturn in the world economy following the global banking crisis has left the Chinese economy relatively unscathed. This paper develops a model of the Chinese economy using a DSGE framework with a banking sector to shed light on this episode. It differs from other applications in the use of indirect inference procedure to test the fitted model. The model finds that the main shocks hitting China in the crisis were international and that domestic banking shocks were unimportant. However, directed bank lending and direct government spending was used to supplement monetary policy to aggressively offset shocks to demand. The model finds that government expenditure feedback reduces the frequency of a business cycle crisis but that any feedback effect on investment creates excess capacity and instability in output.

Abstract:The focus of this paper lies in the study of the intraday distribution of the number of transactions and transaction volume (absolute and mean per transaction) in the interbank credit market e-MID in different market states around the events of the financial crisis of 2007. The results show that the distributions of the number and of the volume of transactions can be characterized as Ushaped and the distribution of the mean per transaction as three-peaked. However, there are important differences when it comes to the comparison of the different market states and the differentiation between sell and buy transactions. Moreover, this study detects stylized facts about the market regarding the number of trades and the volume during the day. Sell transactions are higher in each market state. This highlights the fact that this market is used widely to deposit excessive liquidity in all intervals during the day. Furthermore, differences within these variables during different market states can be observed, which highlights the importance of this analysis. This study can strengthen our understanding of the interbank credit market as it is important for policy makers and the daily trading strategies of banks. Additionally, implications can be seen as the basis for further empirical and econometric research.

Abstract:At present,the huge volatility of the global trade caused by the world economic crisis and its recovery is attracting great concerns,whereas the internal distribution of the products can provide a very effective research perspective for analyzing the deeper causes of this phenomenon.The real economy and the monetary economy interact by way of monetary cycling,the different economic departments under internal distribution of the products interact by way of goods cycling,whereas the fusion of monetary cycling and goods cycling make an initial exogenous financial collision spread by way of global value chain and form "echoed" effect,and further evolve into reciprocating and continuous "amplifying" endogenous collision,leading to the ultimate result that the global trade volatiles greatly.

Abstract:We examine the impact of heightened liquidity risk in bank funding markets during the 2007-08 subprime crisis on the supply of credit to firms internationally. Our sample comprises almost 800 banks lending in the syndicated loan market to borrowers from 48 advanced and emerging market economies. To control for simultaneous changes in demand, we relate within-borrower changes in lending from multiple banks to banks' exposure to liquidity risk. To capture banks' vulnerability to the liquidity shocks that occurred during 2007-08, we use measures of pre-crisis reliance on wholesale funding. Our results suggest that banks that were more exposed to liquidity risk during the crisis reduced syndicated lending more than other banks. Our results are robust to alternate measures of vulnerability to liquidity risk, choice of sample period, and simultaneous movements in exchange rates.
Crisis contagion in the world trade network

Abstract:We present a model of worldwide crisis contagion based on the Google matrix analysis of the world trade network obtained from the UN Comtrade database. The fraction of bankrupted countries exhibits an \textit{on-off} phase transition governed by a bankruptcy threshold $\kappa$ related to the trade balance of the countries. For $\kappa>\kappa_c$, the contagion is circumscribed to less than 10\% of the countries, whereas, for $\kappa<\kappa_c$, the crisis is global with about 90\% of the countries going to bankruptcy. We measure the total cost of the crisis during the contagion process. In addition to providing contagion scenarios, our model allows to probe the structural trading dependencies between countries. For different networks extracted from the world trade exchanges of the last two decades, the global crisis comes from the Western world. In particular, the source of the global crisis is systematically the Old Continent and The Americas (mainly US and Mexico). Besides the economy of Australia, those of Asian countries, such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, are the last to fall during the contagion. Also, the four BRIC are among the most robust countries to the world trade crisis.

Abstract:This paper investigates the use of trade credit by firms from countries that have recently undergone a financial crisis. The paper examines a sample of 147 firms from Argentina, Brazil, and Turkey and finds empirical evidence that supports the substitution hypothesis between bank credit and trade credit. The paper also supports the matching hypothesis in which firms that delay collection from their customers then demand long-term trade credit from their suppliers. Specifically, the paper finds that firms that present high levels of days-of-sales outstanding and a high probability of insolvency use more trade credit and that these relations are enhanced during a financial crisis. Results suggest that credit constraints during a financial crisis cause firms holding high levels of accounts receivable to postpone payments to suppliers. Specifically, high-risk firms postpone suppliers' payments to avoid insolvency. These results can be interpreted as evidence of a credit contagion in the supply chain.

Abstract:Although cross-border lending has fallen sharply since the crisis, foreign bank presence—that is, “brick-and-mortar” operations—declined much less. While OECD banks reduced their presence (though they still control 89 percent of foreign banks’ assets), non-OECD banks more than doubled theirs. Banks from countries facing systemic crises exited (more distant) markets and curtailed their subsidiaries’ growth. Banks were more likely to sell smaller, more recent investments and enter closer and more important trading partners, shunning crisis and euro area countries. Lending locally grew more than cross-border claims did, but related to different factors. Altogether, the paper shows that global banking is not becoming more fragmented, but rather going through some important structural transformations with a greater variety of players and a more regional focus.

Abstract:<p>We examine the impact of economic policy uncertainty on trade credit. We document a decline (increase) in accounts payable, receivable, and net credit during periods of high (low) policy uncertainty and that firms react quickly to changes in uncertainty. The relation is long-term and holds after controlling for endogeneity, non-policy economic and political uncertainties, and the Great Recession. Industry competitiveness, proxied by firm market power, moderates the impact of economic policy uncertainty on trade credit. Uncertainty about monetary and fiscal policies, taxes, and regulations are the major drivers of trade credit changes. The reduction in trade credit during periods of increasing uncertainty can be explained by financial distress, constraints, and relation-specific investment channels.</p>

Abstract:This paper empirically investigates the effects of two primary types of debt financing − bank credit and trade credit − on firm sales performance during the Global Financial Crisis using Korean firm-level data. I find that firms who relied more on bank credit tended to have slower sales growth, whereas those relied more on trade credit performed better during the crisis and afterwards. However, the mitigating effect of trade credit did not exist for exporters. Also, there was evidence of heterogeneous effect of trade credit among non-exporters, depending on firms' degree of financial access; the effect of trade credit during the crisis significantly diminished for firms with better financial access. The findings overall indicate that for domestic firms with limited financial access trade credit was a more stable type of financing than bank credit, limiting the deteriorating effect of financing on firm performance.
