Abstract:New catalyst systems for diyne polycyclotrimerization were developed. E-1-[2-(2,5-Diethynylphenyl)vinyl]ferrocene (1), a ferrocene-containing diyne, was polymerized by ruthenium-and rhodium-based catalysts, affording hyperbranched polyphenylenes (hb-P1) with high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 1.4 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 100%). Effects of reaction conditions on the polymerization process were investigated, and structures of the resultant polymers were characterized by spectroscopic methods. The polymers were soluble, thermally stable, and redox active. Complexation with cobalt carbonyls further metalized the polymers. Both the polymers and their cobalt complexes showed high refractive indices (RI up to similar to 1.81) at 300-1700 nm, large Abbe numbers (nu(D)' up to similar to 681), and low optical dispersions (D' down to similar to 0.0015) in the telecommunication wavelength region. Pyrolyses of the polymers and their complexes furnished magnetic ceramics with high magnetizabilities (M-s up to similar to 83 emu/g).

Abstract:Four main-chain ferrocene-based polymers containing aromatic units, including poly( o -Cresolphthalein 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PCPFD), poly(cresol red 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PCRFD), poly(2,4-quinolinediol 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PQDFD), and poly(sudan orange G 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PSOFD), were successfully synthesized. The solution polycondensation reaction was employed for the synthesis of PCPFD and PCRFD while PQDFD and PSOFD were synthesized via an interfacial polycondensation reaction. The synthesized polymers were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, UV–VIS absorption and FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction. The synthesized main-chain ferrocene-based polymers are generally amorphous. The effect of organic solvent, scan rate, electrolyte concentration and [Fe] concentration on the cyclic voltammetric behavior of the synthesized polymers were examined. The thermal properties were investigated employing thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed the relative thermal stability of the polymers. The liquid crystalline properties were studied. The results indicated that the synthesized polymers exhibited nematic phases during the scan cycles of heating and cooling with high phase duration.

Abstract:A novel ferrocene-based epoxy compound of the glycidyl ether of poly(bisphenol-A 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (GEPBFC) was synthesized and the electrochemical behavior of its films and solutions was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). It was found that the GEPBFC films and solutions present different CV behavior in different solvents and the swelling ability of the solvent is the main factor that affects the CV behavior of GEPBFC films. The kinetic parameters of the film-electrode process, including the surface transfer coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient and the standard rate constant in LiClO4 ethanol solution, were calculated, and the corresponding electrode-process mechanism was discussed. Abstract:Poly[bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate] (PHOSFD) was synthesized by solution polycondensation reaction of bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone with 1,1′-ferrocenyl chloride. The synthesized polymer was characterized via the measurement of its 1 H NMR spectrum, UV–Vis spectrum and FTIR spectrum. X-ray diffraction pattern was measured to investigate the crystallinity of the synthesized polymer and it was found that the polymer is mostly amorphous. The molecular weight of the polymer was determined by gel permeation chromatography. In addition, the electrochemical, the thermal, and the liquid crystalline properties of the synthesized polymer were examined and compared with the properties of poly(diethyleneglycol 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PDEFD) that was synthesized in our earlier study. The electrochemical processes of PHOSFD in CH 2 Cl 2 were confirmed neither to be totally reversible nor completely irreversible. Generally, the electrochemical properties of PHOSFD and PDEFD were found to be similar to each other. PHOSFD was found to be thermally stable but its thermal stability is lower than that of PDEFD. Both of PHOSFD and PDEFD showed liquid crystalline properties and they possessed nematic phase textures with schlieren disclinations during heating and cooling.

Abstract:Two novel ferrocene-based compounds glycidyl ester of ferrocene carboxylate (GEFC) and 1,3-diferrocenecarboxylic acid diacylglycerol (DFCDG) were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and mass spectrum. The influence of some factors, namely, solvent type, potential scan rate, electrolyte concentration and [Fe] unit concentration, on the electrochemical behaviors of two novel ferrocene-based compounds was investigated, and the mechanism of the electrode processes was studied. Finally, two compounds were applied to sense the H2PO4− by cyclic voltammetry (CV) method and it was found that the DFCDG with a symmetric structure which was synthesized through ring opening reaction of ferrocene carboxylate and GEFC showed stronger interaction with the H2PO4− than GEFC.

Abstract:A series of ferrocene modified hyperbranched polyethers HBPO-Fe with different ferrocene content were obtained by cation ring-opening polymerization followed by esterification. Electrochemical behaviors HBPO-Fe were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the influence of ferrocene content of HBPO-Fe, scan rate, solvent and electrolyte concentration oil the electrochemical behaviors of HBPO-Fe were discussed, and the dynamic parameters in electrode processes were calculated. Anion recognition of HBPO-Fe was studied by CV and UV-vis. The binding capacities of HBPO-Fe to different anions were compared, and the binding capacities of HBPO-Fe with different ferrocene content were also discussed. Finally, binding models of HBPO-Fe to anions were proposed.

Abstract:The novel ferrocene-based compound 2-Fc is synthesized through the reaction of ferrocene carbonate acid and epoxy rosin E-51, and characterized by H-1 NMR. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc in different organic solvents are recorded, and the major influential factors, namely, potential scan rate, concentration of electrolyte, and concentration of 2-Fc, and the mechanism of the electrode process are investigated. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc film on electrode in LiClO4 aqueous and organic solutions and the application of 2-Fc in H2PO4- recognition are also studied.

Abstract:Ferrocene-based polymers are characterized by their electrochemical activity, good redox properties, thermal, photochemical stability, and liquid crystallinity, and thus they have various applications in different fields. A comprehensive investigation on the synthesis and properties of three novel main-chain ferrocene-based polyesters with azobenzene in the side chain (MFPAS) was carried out. The main-chain ferrocene-based polyester, poly(N-phenyldiethanolamine 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate (PPFD), was synthesized via the solution polycondensation reaction of 1,1'-ferrocenedicarbonyl chloride with phenyldiethanolamine (PDE). The novel MFPAS were synthesized via the post-polymerization azo-coupling reaction of PPFD with three different 4-substituted anilines including 4-nitroaniline, 4-aminobenzoic acid, and 4-aminobenzonitrile to produce 4-nitrophenylazo-functionalized-PPFD (PPFD-NT), 4-carboxyphenylazo-functionalized-PPFD (PPFD-CA), and 4-cyanophenylazo-functionalized-PPFD (PPFD-CN), respectively. All the synthesized polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UVvisible spectroscopy. In addition, powder X-ray diffraction patterns were measured for the synthesized polymers. The photoisomerization of the MFPAS was studied. The thermal properties of the MFPAS were studied using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. PPFD-CA and PPFD-CN were found to be more thermally stable than PPFD-NT. Finally, the liquid-crystalline properties of PPFD and the MFPAS were examined using polarized optical microscope. Abstract:The electrochemical behaviors of two kinds of poly(ferrocenylsilanes) (PFS) with different substituent groups in CH2Cl2 solutions were investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance. The results demonstrated that the CV processes of the PFS on the glass carbon electrode surface in CH2O2 solutions are the diffusion-controlled reversible processes. The oxidative state of PFS forms an adsorption layer on the electrode surface during the oxidation process. The interaction of active ferrocene centers along the main chain induces the stepwise redox process, and makes the CV waves of the PFS solutions present two couples of peaks. The diffusion coefficients of PFS in CH2Cl2 solution are much larger than those of PFS in films. The different electrochemical behaviors of the two PFS solutions indicated that the molecular structure of polymer has influence on the electrochemical properties of the PFS. Abstract:In the past decades, a lot of ferrocene (Fc) derivatives have been synthesized and used in many different applications. In addition, Fc-containing polymers have emerged, as an important class of the metal-containing polymers, with unique electrical, magnetic and optical properties and thus much considerable attention has been paid for the application of these polymer systems. These Fc-containing polymers have many different applications such as amperometric biosensors, immunosensors for proteins, DNA and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and carbon monoxide sensors and also they can be used for the fabrication of optical logic gates. This paper reviews the recent progress in the synthetic methodologies, functionalization and the applications of Fc-based polymers as well as some Fc derivatives.

Abstract:Linear oligo(ferrocenylsilane) and hyperbranched poly(ferrocenylsilane) (LOFS and HPFS) were synthesized by polycondensation of 1,1'-dilithioferrocene (FcLi(2)) with dimethyldichlorosilane (Me2SiCl2) and FcLi2 with methyltrichlorosilane (MeSiCl3) in THF under different conditions, respectively. The electrochemical behaviors of LOFS and HPFS in different solvents, such as THF, CH2Cl2, and CHCl3, were investigated systematically by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The influences of the solvent, structure of polymer, and scan rate on electrochemical behavior of poly(ferrocenylsilane) solutions are discussed. It is found that Delta E-1/2 decreases with the fall of solvent polarity apart from the solvent donor effect and increases with the increase of the acceptor number (AN) of the solvent. More interestingly, the structure of polymer imposes greatly on the interaction between ferrocene units. According to the result, the mechanism of stepwise oxidation of the ferrocene units was proposed, that is, the different conformations of polymers, attaching to electrode surface, before and after oxidized resulted in the stepwise oxidation of ferrocene groups along a chain. Kinetic parameters from CVs indicate that the electrode processes are controlled by both the electrode reaction and mass diffusion and the electrochemical irreversibility of poly(ferrocenylsilane) solutions may be ascribed to the lower electron exchange efficiency on the electrode surface. Abstract:Seventeen ferrocene-containing compounds with four phenyl rings and esters imine group as the central bridge were synthesized. The structures were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The mesogenic properties were. studied by DSC and polarized optical microscopy. The effect of substituents on the mesogenic behavior was discussed. The results show that most of these compounds have a liquid crystal phase.

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphles, 1- (3- carboxy-1-oxopropyl)-1��-(1-oxoalkyl) ferrocene (FcAn, Cn+11H2n+12O1Fe, n=12, 14, 16, 18) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectrum, UV-Vis spectrum, 1H NMR methods. The surface pessure-area(��-A) curve of the FcAn monolayer on water subphase was measured and the molecular average cross-section area and collapse pressure was also obtained. Multilayer films was prepared by LB film techniques and the average depth was measured by SAXA (small angle X-Ray analysis) methods. The difference between FcAn's molecular aggregation in solution and in LB films was studied by UV-Vis spectrum.

Abstract:A redox polymer ferrocene-modified polyacrylamide (PAM-Fc) was prepared by using "post-modification" technology to modify polyacrylamide with grafted ferrocene functional groups in alkylation reaction in dimethyl sulfoxide directly. Chemical structure, electrochemical activity and rheological properties of PAM-Fc in aqueous solutions were investigated respectively. It was found that the thermal stability and redox property were improved significantly and the viscosity of PAM-Fc aqueous solutions increased obviously compared with pure PAM due to the hydrophobic association of Fc groups. Fc groups can stabilize the free radical of PAM polymer chains to improve the thermal stability of PAM-Fc. Furthermore, the viscosity of PAM-Fc aqueous solutions can be adjusted by adding NaCl which can shield the charge on the PAM-Fc molecule chains,p-cyclodextrins being a host material which can entrap Fc groups and H2O2 which can oxidize Fc from reduction state to oxidation state and turn hydrophobic Fc to hydrophilic Fc.

Abstract:A novel ferrocene-based epoxy compound of glycidyl ester of 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate was synthesized by the reaction of 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate and epichlorohydrin. The resultant epoxy compound showed an irreversible redox process in cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement. The curing behavior of glycidyl ester of 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate and dicyandiamide system was investigated by nonisothermal measurement using the Ozawa's approach with the heating rate of 5, 10, 15, and 20 degrees C/min, respectively. It was found that both the diffusion of the compound and the curing temperature have effect on the curing process, and the effect of temperature was greater. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Combining nonequilibrium Green's function technique with density functional theory, the electronic structure-transport property relationships of polyferrocenylene, polyferrocenylacetylene, and polyferrocenylsilane were comparatively studied. We have found that the bridge group between two adjacent ferrocene units plays an important role in tuning their conductivity. The conductivity follows the sequence polyferrocenylene, polyferrocenylacetylene, and polyferrocenylsilane, in agreement with the experimental observation. The sequence cannot be interpreted by different band gaps; electronic structure factors such as Fe-Fe, Fe-cyclopentadienyl, and cyclopentadienyl-bridge group interactions, which influence the conductivity, are identified.

Abstract:Two new ferrocene derivatives N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe1) and N-(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe2) have been synthesized to study the effect on electronic, optical and charge transfer properties while changing the electron donating group with electron withdrawing group. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–Vis, (^{mathrm {1}}hbox {H NMR}), (^{mathrm {13}}hbox {C NMR})) and spectrometric (EI) techniques. The geometries for ground and excited states were optimized by density functional theory (DFT/B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) and time-dependent DFT (TD-B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) levels, respectively. The absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra were estimated using TD-B3LYP and TD-wB97XD functionals and 6-31G** basis set for C, H, N, O and LANL2DZ for Fe atoms in dichloromethane.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of high-molecular-weight poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) films and poly(ferrocenylmethylphenylsilane) films, which contained about 2.8 x 10(-6) mol cm(-2) ferrocene sites in eight kinds of aqueous electrolyte solutions, was investigated with cyclic voltammetry (CV). In some aqueous electrolyte solutions, the CV peak currents diminished gradually with an increase in the scanning times, whereas in other aqueous electrolyte solutions, stable and repeated cyclic voltammograrns were obtained. The polymer films were poor-solvent-swollen in aqueous electrolyte solutions, and this resulted in a high resistivity of mass transfer and a slow rate of electrode reaction; therefore; quasireversible or irreversible CV processes were obtained. The kinetic parameters of the film-electrode processes, such as the surface transfer coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient, and the standard rate constant for electron transfer, for the two films in aqueous LiClO4, solutions were measured, and the electrode process mechanism of the films was examined. Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of polyferrocenyldimethylsilane (PFDMS) films and polyferrocenylmethyl-phenylsilane (PFMPS) films deposited on a glassy carbon electrode in 1.0 M aqueous LiClO4 was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The influences of supporting electrolyte concentration, temperature, film thickness, and the molecular structure of the polymer on the electrode process are discussed. In 1.0 M aqueous LiClO4, the electrochemical processes of two polymer films on glassy carbon electrodes were complex and have a low rate of electron transport and mass diffusion. At routine sweep rates, quasi-reversible or irreversible CV processes of the films were observed, but at slow sweep rates, nearly reversible CV waves were recorded. Below 0.05 M, the concentration of the supporting electrolyte had a considerable effect on the CV behavior of the film, especially on the oxidation wave, that is, the kinetics of film oxidation was limited by the counterion flow into the polymer phase. Elevated temperature increased the rate of the electrode process and improved the reversibility of the film electrode process. The diffusion rate of the active species in the film electrode process was reduced with the film thickness. Furthermore, the molecular structure of the polymer had a notable influence on the electrochemical behavior of the films. The phenyl groups in PFMPS hobbled the chain mobility in the polymer and restricted the surface charge transfer and the active species diffusion so that the kinetic parameters of the PFMPS films, especially the surface transfer coefficient alphan(alpha), were found to be smaller than those corresponding to the PFDMS films. The shapes of the CV peaks of the PFMPS films were broader, the peak potentials for both cathodic and anodic peaks were more positive, and the peak separation DeltaE(p) was larger.
