Abstract:Although creating a high-quality urban green space (UGS) is of considerable importance in public health, few studies have used individuals' emotions to evaluate the UGS quality. This study aims to conduct a multidimensional emotional assessment method of UGS from the perspective of spatial quality. Panoramic videos of 15 scenes in the West Lake Scenic Area were displayed to 34 participants. For each scene, 12 attributes regarding spatial quality were quantified, including perceived plant attributes, spatial structure attributes, and experiences of UGS. Then, the Self-Assessment-Manikin (SAM) scale and face recognition model were used to measure people's valence-arousal emotion values. Among all the predictors, the percentages of water and plants were the most predictive indicators of emotional responses measured by SAM scale, while the interpretation rate of the model measured by face recognition was insufficiently high. Concerning gender differences, women experienced a significantly higher valence than men. Higher percentages of water and plants, larger sizes, approximate shape index, and lower canopy densities were often related to positive emotions. Hence, designers must consider all structural attributes of green spaces, as well as enrich visual perception and provide various activities while creating a UGS. In addition, we suggest combining both physiological and psychological methods to assess emotional responses in future studies. Because the face recognition model can provide objective measurement of emotional responses, and the self-report questionnaire is much easier to administer and can be used as a supplement.
A Method for Scaling Impressions of a Scene

Abstract:This article describes the results of an experiment to evaluate people's impressions of a live landscape scene, the famous West Lake in Hangzhou, China. We invited seventy students from different academic backgrounds to participate in this project. The goals of this study were to find a method for the evaluation of the perception of a live scene, to reveal differences for subjects from different backgrounds, and to provide a method for teaching students. In the experiment, students sat together and looked at the lake from one similar location. The whole scene was divided into five parts, and the students were asked to give their judgment of those five different subjects. The results were analyzed to find the main components describing the scene. The novel features in the work involved the assessment of the scene using a large number of people, to have observers from various backgrounds, and to provide a new teaching method for colour science and colour design.

Abstract:A space or building must be both energy and people friendly. Hence, there are two major elements to our perceptions of any space we happen to view or inhabit the ambient physical conditions and the psychologically perceived state of the space. This paper examines methodologies for quantifying the latter.Perceptions of an environment are hierarchical and we downgrade the space first on that feature of the space to which our attention is most sensitive. Hence, we need to make high energy consumption space attributes as low as possible in the hierarchy. Perhaps to some diners the visually perceived cleanness of a room may be of paramount importance. For such people it is suggested that perception of a low cleanness space will make these diners more aware of deficiencies in, for example, room temperature. Hence to minimise perception of, in this case, low temperature we need to maximise the psychophysical perception of cleanness.For such maximisation we must be able to measure and understand the effects of materials and design on our psychological perception of the space. There are two aspects to this - the physical properties of the space (for example chairs and decoration) and the impact and expectations (for example cleanness) generated by these physical properties.Bipolar scales can be used to quantify the physics of the scene and also our psychophysical response to the scene. In this way designers can be directed towards those elements of a designed space contributing to specific desired aspects of the space, such as cleanness. However, relationships discovered in this way do not necessarily help to quantify the initial impact of a design. A number of aspects of the scene may contribute to the perception of impact. Although for very many years colours have been described as hard or soft or warm or cool, artists have not used this vocabulary in a quantitative way. Kobayashi (1998) showed that colours can be quantifiably expressed in a designer helpful way using a diagram whose axes are warm to cool and hard to soft. This designer friendly description can be extended from colours to materials, to lighting as well as to the design itself (Hutchings and Luo, 2008). Optimisation of perceived comfort can help reduce awareness of energy consuming factors in the environment.

Abstract:Theme restaurants are primarily run based on spatial planning, decor and entertainment arrangements, with a distinctive theme or specific style to attract consumers and create a value in the minds of consumers. However, after a rapid growth in popularity in the early to mid-1990s, theme restaurants began to lose market share, and many once popular brands were forced to downsize. This study explores the physical factors of theme restaurants that influence consumer perceptions to develop an assessment tool for the planning and design stage. First, various dimensions and facets were identified and developed into questionnaire items after referencing publicly available scales. The ″Theme Restaurant Physical Factor Scale″ was established after testing the pilot samples of 279 people and the official samples of 286 people. The analysis results indicate that a two-order confirmatory factor analysis of structural equation models is effective for verifying the theme restaurant physical factor scale. Among them, five latent variables, including aesthetics, ambient condition, space/function, seating comfort, and cleanliness, and 18 observable variables can be used as effective evaluation measurement indicators. The scale has relatively high reference value and can be applied to the restaurant industry and by designers for evaluation.

Abstract:Scientific and accurate evaluation of architecture is efficient for design optimization and resource conservation of sustainable cities. Complicated and multidisciplinary contents and architecture proposals are difficult to judge with validity and objectivity by current evaluation methods. A scale is a concentrated application of psychometrics that can collect expert knowledge objectively, scientifically, and comprehensively. This paper proposes the development of an architecture design evaluation scale on the natural dimension with the application of a web-based interface system. The evaluation items of the scale were determined by the Delphi process. Offering a broader dimension of information exchange, a web-based interface system was applied in the Delphi process and the scale pretest. Then, following psychometric research methodology, the pretest results were proven to be scientific and accurate by reliability and validity tests (KMO=0.72,P=1.06 ×10−105 , Cronbach α=0.923 ). This research develops a new evaluation scale of architectural design, aiming to improve the quality of architectural design and the sustainability of cities.

Abstract:There is currently no robust method to evaluate how built environment design affects our emotion. Understanding emotion is significant, as it influences cognitive processes, behavior, and wellbeing, and is linked to the functioning of physiological systems. As mental health problems are becoming more prevalent, and exposure to indoor environments is increasing, it is important we develop rigorous methods to understand whether design elements in our environment affect emotion. This study examines whether the scale of interior built environments modulate neural networks involved in emotion regulation. Using a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) and controlling for indoor environmental quality (IEQ), 66 adults (31 female, aged 18–55) were exposed to context-neutral enclosed indoor room scenes to understand whether built environment scale affected self-report, autonomic nervous system, and central nervous system correlates of emotion. Our results revealed enlarged scale increased electroencephalography (EEG) power in the β bandwidth. Frontal midline low- and high- power were also found to increase with enlarged scale, but contrary to our hypothesis, scale did not modulate frontal midline power or lateralization in the or α bandwidths. We did not detect an effect of scale on autonomic indicators or self-reported emotion. However, we did find increased range in skin conductance response (SCR) and heart rate variability (HRV) to the built environment conditions. This study provides a rigorous empirical framework for assessing the environmental impact of a design characteristic on human emotion and suggests that measures of high-frequency oscillations may provide a useful marker of the response to built environment.

Evaluating Interior Architectural Elements That Influence Perception of Spaciousness in Isolated, Confined, and Extreme Environments

Abstract:This research aims to understand the factors that contribute to the quality of life within isolated, confined, extreme (ICE) environments by investigating the architectural elements that affect an individual’s spatial perception, their manifestation in ICE environments, and how spatial confinement and isolation contribute to changes in an individual’s perception of spaciousness. The researchers performed an in-depth examination on three different habitats, designed to simulate life in ICE environments, to identify which architectural elements were important contributors to positive and negative changes in spaciousness. For further explorations, fourteen design professionals were asked to evaluate these habitats using the Spaciousness and Crampedness Scale (SCS) and measuring the relative estimation in error of habitats’ areas. Afterward, the evaluations were compared with the examinations. The results indicate that the environment’s geometry, lighting, color, and texture significantly contribute to perceived spaciousness when evaluated through qualitative and quantitative methods.
Designer's approach for scene selection in tests of preference and restoration along a continuum of natural to manmade environments

Abstract:It is well-established that the experience of nature produces an array of positive benefits to mental well-being. Much less is known about the specific attributes of green space which produce these effects. In the absence of translational research that links theory with application, it is challenging to design urban green space for its greatest restorative potential. This translational research provides a method for identifying which specific physical attributes of an environmental setting are most likely to influence preference and restoration responses. Attribute identification was based on a triangulation process invoking environmental psychology and aesthetics theories, principles of design founded in mathematics and aesthetics, and empirical research on the role of specific physical attributes of the environment in preference or restoration responses. From this integration emerged a list of physical attributes defining aspects of spatial structure and environmental content found to be most relevant to the perceptions involved with preference and restoration. The physical attribute list offers a starting point for deciphering which scene stimuli dominate or collaborate in preference and restoration responses. To support this, functional definitions and metrics-efficient methods for attribute quantification are presented. Use of these research products and the process for defining place-based metrics can provide (a) greater control in the selection and interpretation of the scenes/images used in tests of preference and restoration and (b) an expanded evidence base for well-being designers of the built environment.
Optimizing the Spatial Scale for Neighborhood Environment Characteristics Using Fine-Grained Data.

Abstract:The neighborhood effect of environment characteristics has been an important topic in social sciences that are concerned with people's behaviors. However, defining a neighborhood and its aggregation scales are difficult challenges for the studies using neighborhood characteristics. Previous studies generally adopted fixed administrative units as the neighborhood and chose the same scale for all the variables due to data availability. Aggregation scales have a significant influence on examining the relationships between area-based input variables and outcome variables, but how to optimize the scale for each variable has been less investigated. This study proposes a multiscale feature extraction and scale optimization framework for simultaneously determining the optimal scale for each neighborhood environment variable and building an optimized multiscale model. First, we developed multiscale extraction methods for the socioeconomic and built environment characteristics within overlapping neighborhoods based on different types of data, including fine-grained mobile phone user data and point of interest data. Next, we proposed a random forest-based scale optimization method to quantify the impact of scales and determined an optimal spatial scale for each variable. Third, we used urban burglary risk modeling as an example, to demonstrate the usefulness of the scale optimization method. In the comparison, the model using an optimized multiscale feature set (R2 = 0.843, F1 score = 0.797 for high-risk samples) achieved better accuracy than all the models using fixed-scale combination feature sets. Moreover, the results revealed that there might be differences in the optimal scale of different neighborhood environment characteristics and demonstrated the effectiveness of our scale optimization method. Our multiscale feature extraction and scale optimization framework is well suited for assessing the neighborhood effect in social sciences.
Understanding the Impact of Referent Design on Scale Perception in Immersive Data Visualization

Abstract:Referents are often used to enhance scale perception in immersive visualizations. Common referent designs include the considerations of referent layout (side-by-side vs. in-situ) and referent size (small vs. medium vs. large). This paper introduces a controlled user study to assess how different referent designs affect the efficiency and accuracy of scale perception across different data scales, on the performance of the size-matching task in the virtual environment. Our results reveal that in-situ layouts significantly enhance accuracy and confidence across various data scales, particularly with large referents. Linear regression analyses further confirm that in-situ layouts exhibit greater resilience to changes in data scale. For tasks requiring efficiency, medium-sized referents emerge as the preferred choice. Based on these findings, we offer design guidelines for selecting referent layouts and sizes in immersive visualizations.

Psychophysiological Response According to the Greenness Index of Subway Station Space

Abstract:This study proposed a plan for implementing a pleasant and healthy indoor landscape in subway station space. To this end, it established a 3D landscape model of the subway interior by reviewing previous studies on indoor landscape and the greenness index of indoor spaces. Moreover, it investigated and analyzed psychophysiological responses of users to environmental indoor landscape design in subway station space. Subway stations were classified as underground subway stations and ground subway stations according to the presence of natural light inflow. The greenness index of indoor spaces was also divided into four types of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Through this process, eight 3D landscape models of the subway interior were implemented. In addition, this study investigated psychophysiological responses of 60 male and female adults in their 20 s and 30 s using the models implemented. The investigation result was analyzed based on a frequency analysis, the χ2 test, T-test, one-way analysis of variance, and multidimensional scaling, which were performed in SPSS Statistics 25. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, physiological responses of research subjects were analyzed based on their prefrontal α wave asymmetric values. The analytic result showed that the environment where interior landscape was adopted produced more positive effects than the environment where interior landscape was not adopted. Second, psychological responses of research subjects were examined based on their greenness index preference, awareness of interior landscape area, attention restoration effect, and space images. The analytic result indicated that, among eight 3D landscape models of the subway interior, they preferred the model with the greenness index of 15% for underground subway stations. In addition, they preferred the model with the greenness index of 10% the most for ground subway stations.
Outdoor Space Elements in Urban Residential Areas in Shenzhen, China: Optimization Based on Health-Promoting Behaviours of Older People

Abstract:Given the ageing global population, it is important to promote "healthy ageing". One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by prolonging the health of older people. Both the physical and mental well-being of older people are closely related to their living environment. Providing daily outdoor activities and enhancing the quality of public spaces and amenities in residential areas can encourage the adoption of healthy behaviours among older people. This study selected eight typical residential areas in Shenzhen, China, and analysed 40 outdoor public spaces. Video content obtained from fixed-point behavioural observation was entered into the Mangold INTERACT behavioural analysis system to extract the health behaviour data of older people. Regression analysis was then performed on the health behaviour data and the index data of the sample space elements. The results showed that several factors affect the outdoor health behaviours of older people. These factors include the scale of the outdoor space, the size of the hard ground area, the quality of the grey space, the green-looking rate, the accessibility of the site, the number of fitness facilities, and the richness of site functions. This study focused on a host of health-related behaviours such as rest, leisure, communication, and exercise. It confirmed the corresponding spatial needs of the elderly when engaging in the aforesaid activities. In this way, the quantitative research has supplemented previous studies by studying and evaluating the behaviour and activities of the elderly in specific settings. Through the analyses, a configuration model of outdoor space in residential areas was constructed with the aim of health promotion. Based on this model, a flexible and multilevel configuration list revealing seven specific types under three priorities is being proposed. The findings provide a scientific and effective strategy for optimising the quality of outdoor environments in residential areas. More specifically, the deployment of the Mangold INTERACT system to extract and quantify behavioural data enabled this study to overcome the limitations of traditional approaches to behavioural observation and recording. This provides a prelude for other quantitative research on the environment and behaviour.

Abstract:In this study, we conduct experiment of psychological evaluation after watching 360 degrees view of the landscape of roof gardens in Shibuya commercial area regarding the relationship of spatial composition and psychological evaluation. Firstly, three axes are found from the psychological evaluation of the landscape of roof gardens. Secondly, in the case of inward facing roof gardens, when the floor area is large with many plants, the comfortability factor is greater. In the case of facing the street, when the area of floor is small with many buildings, roads and fence being viewed without plants, the comfortability factor is smaller.
Assessing Neighbourhood Preference: An Evaluation of Environmental Features within Small-Scale Open Spaces

Abstract:Well-designed urban public spaces often attract residents and play a critical role in improving people's wellbeing. Many studies have examined the importance of one or a few environmental features in urban public spaces, such as the size of the space, greenery coverage, seating arrangements, recreational facilities, etc. However, there is a lack of systematic understanding regarding (1) which environmental features have a significant impact on the usage of urban public spaces and (2) how these features influence people's environmental preferences. To answer these questions, this investigation adopts a two-fold analytical structure: (1) first, an expert inquiry was conducted to evaluate the environmental features, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was applied to determine the weight of each influencing factor; then, (2) on-site measurements were conducted across 104 spaces, accompanied by structured interviews with users of the spaces, based on which a decision tree analysis was employed to elucidate the decision-making processes of residents regarding their outdoor activities. The main findings of this investigation are as follows: (1) the site size, internal pedestrian flow, sky view factor, green-vision rate, and seat–circumference ratio are primary indicators affecting outdoor space usage, which are used in the objective evaluation index; (2) advantage value intervals for the sky view factor, green-vision rate, and seat–circumference ratio variables were calculated, and these three factors were found to significantly outweigh site size and internal pedestrian flow in terms of their effect on spatial preference. The interaction between the green-vision rate and seat–circumference ratio can affect the environmental preferences of residents: spaces with more seats exhibit lower requirements for greenery, while spaces with fewer seats should prioritise trees and greenery. Based on this study, an index based on influencing factors is proposed, enabling a better understanding of the environmental features affecting the usage of space. This study also provides valuable insights for future neighbourhood design through investigating the environmental preferences of residents, as well as the importance of various spatial features and their associated advantage value intervals.

Abstract:Addressing the emotional needs of the elderly in urban space design has increasingly become a vital concern. This study innovatively integrates emotional theories with the design of community outdoor spaces, thereby expanding the research on emotional categorization in urban spaces. At 8 community outdoor space sites in Yi Jie Qu, China, 330 elderly residents were randomly recruited to assess their color emotional responses (CER) to the color landscapes of these spaces. Based on the Affective Circumplex Model and Japanese Color Image Theory, a Color Emotion Circumplex was constructed to visually represent the overall emotional tendencies and significant positive emotions of the elderly. The second innovation of this research lies in exploring the driving factors behind positive emotional responses of the elderly, the primary user group of community outdoor spaces. We analyzed the significant differences in CER between autumn and winter scenes, employing variance analysis, correlation, and regression to investigate the substantial effects of individual factors and color characteristics on positive CER. The study discovered that the elderly exhibit a stronger CER towards clean and healthy emotions. Notably, CER was more pronounced in autumn scenes compared to winter. Furthermore, educational level, visit frequency, and color brightness positively influenced positive CER, whereas walking time from residence and the color area ratios of blue and gray negatively impacted CER. These findings not only provide a theoretical basis for age-friendly color design in community spaces, but also offer new perspectives and practical guidance for the international community planning and design domain. Our research underscores the importance of incorporating the emotional needs of the elderly into urban space design, offering novel theoretical and practical guidance for future urban planning and community design.

Thus, we investigated how the atmospheric design of such spaces responds to and fulfills consumers’ multidimensional evaluations, encompassing their psychological, emotional, and social needs. The findings underscored the significant appeal of “emotional healing” and “emotional companionship” to consumers. The factor analysis result delineated two major dimensions, “emotion and space” and “environmental aesthetics”, reflecting that consumers, besides seeking emotional satisfaction, placed a high value on the cultural and aesthetic experience of the space. Through the Kano model and regression analysis, “emotional healing” and “independent space” were confirmed as pivotal factors in the atmospheric design of light food and beverage spaces. To cater to the innermost needs of urban consumers, in the atmospheric design of such spaces, dimensions including psychological, emotional, and environmental aesthetics must be strategically integrated.
Integrated Eye-Tracking Response Surface Analysis to Optimize the Design of Garden Landscapes

Abstract:Gardens not only provide people with a place for leisure and relaxation, they also contribute to improving urban ecological environments and promoting social interactions and cohesion. Additionally, from a psychological perspective, gardens play a role in alleviating stress, enhancing happiness, and improving the quality of life. Current research on gardens has primarily employed methods such as questionnaire surveys, environmental psychology analyses, and eye-tracking analyses; however, comprehensive studies on the relationships between multiple factors and levels in garden designs are lacking. Here, we propose a response surface analysis approach based on eye-tracking technology for the design and optimization of gardens. Firstly, the impacts of different garden elements on visitors' psychology and fixation counts were analyzed using environmental psychology and eye-tracking analyses. Subsequently, the optimal range of each garden feature was determined through single-factor experiments, followed by response surface analysis to obtain the optimal value for each element. The results revealed that changes in garden elements such as the greenery ratio, number of buildings, and water saturation significantly affected visitors' psychology. The greenery ratio had a greater impact than the number of buildings, which in turn had a greater impact than water saturation. This study is the first to analyze the relationships between multiple garden elements. A strong relationship was found between the greenery ratio and the number of buildings, as well as between the number of buildings and water saturation, while the relationship between the greenery ratio and water saturation was weaker. This approach can not only optimize garden designs but can also be widely applied in fields such as urban planning and public space transformation to enhance visitors' comfort and satisfaction with the environment and promote sustainable urban development.
