Abstract:Efficient global optimization of aerodynamic shapes with the high-fidelity method is of great importance in the design process of modern aircrafts. In this study, modifications are made to the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the radial basis function (RBF) model for further improvements of efficiency and accuracy of optimization. Specifically, a PSO algorithm with randomly distributed cognitive and social parameters, exponential decrease of maximum velocity and inertia weight, and periodic mutation of particle position is proposed. Furthermore, a nonuniform shape parameters strategy is introduced for the RBF surrogate model. Validations on test functions show that the new PSO has remarkable speed of convergence, and the new RBF model has superior approximation accuracy. The PSO algorithm and RBF model are then combined to construct the computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based optimization framework. Finally, optimizations of transonic airfoil and supersonic launch vehicle are performed and results show that the drag coefficients in the two cases are significantly reduced (14 and 15%, respectively). The successful applications also indicate that the proposed PSO and RBF as a whole have apparent advantages over their original versions, and the optimization framework is effective and practical for design of aerodynamic shapes. Abstract:This paper proposed a new approach of particle swarm optimization (PSO). The proposed modified PSO algorithm is equipped with some specially designed mechanisms of adaptively updating algorithm parameters to preserve the diversity of the swarm and to keep the balance between exploration and exploitation searches. All these mechanisms help the algorithm to avoid the premature convergence and to strengthen its robustness. Experiments are conducted on different complicated, unimodal and multimodal test functions, as well as a typical engineering inverse problem, the TEAM Workshop problem 22. The numerical results illustrate that the proposed PSO shows better performance as compared to other well developed evolutionary algorithms.

Abstract:Fossil-fuel based power sources cause environmental pollution such as the degradation of air quality and climate change, which negatively impacts the life on the earth. Consequently, this demands that the power generation should consider the optimal management of thermal sources that are aimed at minimizing the emission of gasses in the generation mix. The production volume of multi-pollutant gasses (SO2, NOx, and CO2) can be reduced through a combined environmental economic dispatch (CEED) approach. This study has proposed a hybrid algorithm based on a novel combination of a modified genetic algorithm and an improved version of particle swarm optimization abbreviated as MGAIPSO to solve CEED problem. The study utilizes three robust operators to enhance the performance of the proposed hybrid algorithm. In GA, a uniformly weighted arithmetic crossover and a normally distributed mutation operator have been implemented to produce elite off-springs in each iteration and diversify the solutions in the search space. In the case of PSO, a non-linear time-varying double-weighted (NLTVDW) technique is developed to obtain a substantial balance between exploration and exploitation. To further enhance the exploitation ability of the MGAIPSO, this study has implemented two movements correctional methods to continuously monitor and amend the position and velocity of the particles. Several numerical case studies ranging from small to large-scale are carried out to validate the practicality of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a population based optimal method and very simple in both theory and numerical implementation. Nowadays, PSO has been recognized as a paradigm for numerical optimizations; however, PSO is easily trapped into a local optimum when solving multidimensional and complex problems. In order to overcome this difficulty, this paper presents a modified PSO with a dynamic inertia weight and an adaptive mutation operator. To verify the proposed PSO, we test it numerically on a set of well known bench mark functions as well as on an engineering problem, as to which it has shown better performance and efficiency while compared to the basic PSO and Beta PSO.

Abstract:In the present work, a real-time maneuver decision method for close air combat based on hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) was proposed. Firstly, an air combat maneuver model was constructed to obtain the optimal situation, with the situation model that considers the missile launching zone offering the real-time maneuver decision basis. Subsequently, the hybrid PSO algorithm was employed to calculate the optimal control variables in maneuver decisions. The simulation results show that the hybrid PSO algorithm can calculate the optimal control variables in maneuver decisions more quickly and effectively, providing a reliable reference for pilots to make maneuver decisions.

Abstract:To reduce the calculating numbers of objective function needed in solving the complicated optimization problems of electromagnetic devices,a fast global optimization method based on moving least square(MLS) and particle swarm optimization(PSO) was proposed.The original optimal problem was reconstructed by using the response surface model based on MLS,and then the reconstructed objective function was solved by the weighted PSO algorithm.Quasi-Newton method was adopted to directly search the original optimal problem again,and the final optimal solutions were found.The benchmark test function and practical electromagnetic device were optimized by utilizing the method.The results show that compared with the weighted PSO,the proposed method can find the global optimal solution of the optimal problem,reduce the number of objective function calculated,save computation time and improve the calculation efficiency.

Abstract:Due to the complex hysteresis phenomenon at a high angle of attack (AOA), modeling of unsteady aerodynamic coefficients usually encounters the problem that the parameter vector is too long and the simulation accuracy is not high. The article proposes an improved state-space model based on aerodynamics, applying Fourier analysis and the principal component analysis for model optimization. The likelihood criterion and GOIPSO (Iterative Particle Swarm Optimization Based on Genetic Operator) algorithm are established under the Gaussian assumption. The iterative PSO, into which the genetic algorithm's operators are integrated to calculate the optimization of the likelihood function, greatly reduced the probability of local optimization. Experiments show that the algorithm and model proposed in this paper greatly improves the model-fitting accuracy.

Abstract:This paper presents solution of optimal power flow (OPF) problem of a power system via a simple particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. This method is dynamic in nature and it overcomes the shortcomings of other evolutionary computation techniques such as premature convergence and provides high quality solutions. The objective is to minimize the fuel cost and keep the power outputs of generators, bus voltages, shunt capacitors/reactors and transformers tap-setting in their secure limits. The effectiveness of PSO was compared to that of OPF by MATPOWER. The potential and superiority of PSO have been demonstrated through the results of IEEE 30-bus system.

Abstract:Particle swarm optimization(PSO), whose advantage is easy to implement, as an evolution algorithm, can search for optima quickly in multidimensional solution space. Based on PSO and classical PID controlling theory, an PSO-PID controller, using weighted error function as fitness function, is developed. The PSO-PID controller can search the optimal controller parameters on-line. The good performance of PSO-PID is verified by the application of hydraulic edger screwdown system in Baosteel 2050 rough mill. The results show that the PSO-PID controller achieves better performance than the classic one, especially, in the circumstance of working condition variation.

Abstract:Particle swarm optimization is a stochastic optimal search algorithm inspired by observing schools of fishes and flocks of birds. It is prevalent due to its easy implementation and fast convergence. However, PSO has been known to succumb to local optima when dealing with complex and higher dimensional optimization problems. To handle the problem of premutature convergence in PSO, this paper presents a novel adaptive inertia weight strategy and modifies the velocity update equation with the new Sbest term. To maintain the diversity of the population a particular radius r is introduced to impulse cluster particles. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, various test functions and typical engineering applications are employed, and the experimental results show that with the changing of the proposed parameter the performance of PSO improves when dealing with these complex and high dimensional problems.

Abstract:Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic search algorithm inspired from the natural behavior of bird flocking or fish schooling for searching their foods. Due to its easiness in numerical implantations, PSO has been widely applied to solve a variety of inverse and optimization problems. However, a PSO is often trapped into local optima while dealing with complex and real world design problems. In this regard, a new modified PSO is proposed by introducing a mutation mechanism and using dynamic algorithm parameters. According to the proposed mutation mechanism, one particle is randomly selected from all personal best ones to generate some trial particles to preserve the diversity of the algorithm in the final searching stage of the evolution process. Moreover, the random variations in the two learning factors will help the particles to reach an optimal solution. In addition, the dynamic variation in the inertia weight will facilitate the algorithm to keep a good balance between exploration and exploitation searches. The numerical experiments on different case studies have shown that the proposed PSO obtains the best results among the tested algorithms.

Abstract:Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a global optimal algorithm based on swarm intelligence. PSO is more popular due to its easiness in implementation and fast convergence speed. However, PSO will be trapped into local optima while it is used to solve complex, multimodal inverse problems. To establish a proper balance between the exploration and exploitation searches, this paper introduces a dynamic and adaptive mechanism for the three basic parameters. To preserve the diversity of the swarm, a particular best particle, which takes part in a mutation operation, is introduced in the modified PSO. The numerical results on a case study show that the proposed PSO finds the best results as compared to other ones.

Abstract:A particle swarm optimization (PSO) based algorithm for finding the Pareto solutions of multiobjective design problems is proposed. To enhance the global searching ability of the available PSOs, a novel formula for updating the particles' velocity and position, as well as the introduction of craziness, are reported. To handle a multiobjective design problem using the improved PSO, a new fitness assignment mechanism is proposed. Moreover, two repositories, together with the age variables for their members, are introduced for storing and selecting the previous best positions of the particle as well as that of its companions. Besides, the use of age variables to enhance the diversity of the solutions is also described. The proposed method is tested on two numerical examples with promising results.

Abstract:This paper proposes the application of particle swarm optimization (PSO) to the problem of finite element model (FEM) selection. This problem arises when a choice of the best model for a system has to be made from set of competing models, each developed a priori from engineering judgment. PSO is a population-based stochastic search algorithm inspired by the behaviour of biological entities in nature when they are foraging for resources. Each potentially correct model is represented as a particle that exhibits both individualistic and group behaviour. Each particle moves within the model search space looking for the best solution by updating the parameters values that define it. The most important step in the particle swarm algorithm is the method of representing models which should take into account the number, location and variables of parameters to be updated. One example structural system is used to show the applicability of PSO in finding an optimal FEM. An optimal model is defined as the model that has the least number of updated parameters and has the smallest parameter variable variation from the mean material properties. Two different objective functions are used to compare performance of the PSO algorithm.

Abstract:In the present work, a novel neuro-swarming based heuristic solver is established for the numerical solutions of fourth-order multi-singular nonlinear Emden–Fowler (FO-MS-NEF) model using the function estimate capability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) modelling together with the global application of particle swarm optimization (PSO) enhanced by local search active set (AS) approach, i.e., ANN-PSO-AS solver. The design stimulation for the ANN-PSO-AS scheme for a numerical solver originates with an intention to present a viable, consistent and precise configuration that associates the ANNs strength under the optimization of unified soft computing backgrounds to tackle with such stimulating models for the FO-MS-NEF equation. The proposed ANN-PSO-AS solver is applied for three different variants of FO-MS-NEF equations. The comparison of the obtained results with the true solutions calmed its correctness, effectiveness, and robustness that is further validated with in-depth statistical investigations.

Abstract:To overcome the disadvantages of premature convergence and easy trapping into local optimum solutions, this paper proposes an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (named NDWPSO algorithm) based on multiple hybrid strategies. Firstly, the elite opposition-based learning method is utilized to initialize the particle position matrix. Secondly, the dynamic inertial weight parameters are given to improve the global search speed in the early iterative phase. Thirdly, a new local optimal jump-out strategy is proposed to overcome the "premature" problem. Finally, the algorithm applies the spiral shrinkage search strategy from the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and the Differential Evolution (DE) mutation strategy in the later iteration to accelerate the convergence speed. The NDWPSO is further compared with other 8 well-known nature-inspired algorithms (3 PSO variants and 5 other intelligent algorithms) on 23 benchmark test functions and three practical engineering problems. Simulation results prove that the NDWPSO algorithm obtains better results for all 49 sets of data than the other 3 PSO variants. Compared with 5 other intelligent algorithms, the NDWPSO obtains 69.2%, 84.6%, and 84.6% of the best results for the benchmark function ( ) with 3 kinds of dimensional spaces (Dim = 30,50,100) and 80% of the best optimal solutions for 10 fixed-multimodal benchmark functions. Also, the best design solutions are obtained by NDWPSO for all 3 classical practical engineering problems.

Abstract:Nonlinear optimization is becoming more challenging in information sciences and various industrial applications, but nonlinear problems solved by the classical particle swarm‐based methods are usually characterized by low efficiency, accuracy, and convergence speed in specific issues. To solve these problems and enhance the nonlinear optimization performance, an improved metaheuristic particle swarm optimization (PSO) model is proposed here. First, the optimization principles and model of the new method are introduced, and algorithms of the improved PSO are presented by updating the displacement and velocity of the moving particle according to Euler–Maruyama (EM) principle rather than traditional standard normal distribution. Then, the influence of the model parameters, input dimensions, and different nonlinear problems on the PSO optimization characterizations are studied by Pareto set solving and optimization performance comparison. The analysis regarding diverse nonlinear problems and optimization methods manifests that the improved method is capable of solving various nonlinear problems especially for multiobjective models, while the robustness and reliability can always keep consistent regardless of the change of model parameters. Finally, the performance evaluation is exhibited by the case study of nonlinear parameter optimization, 3 groups of CEC benchmark problems, and rank‐sum test for 6 comparable optimization algorithms, which all verify its effectiveness and reliability, as well as the significance and great application promise. The results show that the new proposed PSO method has the fastest convergence speed and least iteration numbers in searching for the global best solution of 9 nonlinear problems among 8 different optimization models indicated by the p values smaller than 0.05. Additionally, the main conclusions showing the calculation efficiency, stability, robustness, and great application promise of the proposed method are summarized, and future work is discussed.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are powerful tools for solving complex engineering applications problems, however, the function evaluations of the real-world problems are often time-consuming, which hinders the application of EAs to solve these problems. To address this challenge, surrogate-assisted EAs (SAEAs) have been widely studied over the past decades. Model management can help obtain solutions under limited computational budget to accelerate the convergence of the optimization process. In this paper, we propose a SAEA based on social learning particle swarm optimization (SL-PSO), a space reduction strategy and a global model search strategy are developed to search for the best and most uncertain solutions. In the proposed algorithm, the space reduction strategy is used to search for the optimal solution based on the surrogates and the global model search strategy is used to search for the most uncertain solution. The evolutionary search using the space strategy switches to the global search once on further improvement can be observed, and vice versa. Experimental results comparing the proposed algorithm with other two algorithms on several benchmark problems that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve better or competitive solutions.
