Abstract:Vortex beams (VBs), characterized by helical phase front and orbital angular momentum (OAM), have shown perspective potential in improving communication capacity density for providing an additional multiplexing dimension. Here, we propose a diffractive deep neural network (D 2 NN) method for OAM mode multiplexing and demultiplexing. By designing the D 2 NN model and simulating light propagation through multiple diffractive screens, the phase and amplitude values can be automatically adjusted to manipulate the wavefront of light beams. Training the D 2 NN model with mode coupler and separator functions, we convert VBs into target light fields with the diffraction efficiency exceeds 97%, and the mode purities are over 97%. Constructing an OAM multiplexing link, we successfully multiplex and demultiplex two OAM channels that carry 16-QAM signals in simulation, and the demodulated bit-error-rates are below 1×10 -4 . It is anticipated that the D 2 NN can perform flexible modulation of multiple OAM modes, which may open a new avenue for high-capacity OAM communication and all-optical information processing, etc.

Abstract:Vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) shows promising potential in enlarging communication capacity and improving modulation ability for its mode orthogonality. Although various OAM multiplexing schemes have been proposed to boost channel capacity density, few studies have focused on OAM shift keying (OAM-SK) communication because of the lack of rapid and low-latency mode demodulation technologies. In this study, we propose a neural-network-assisted coherent nanophotonic circuit (CNC) strategy for demodulating OAM modes and investigate its application in OAM-SK communication. The CNC comprises 380 Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and achieves a unitary matrix transformation by simultaneously modulating the amplitude and phase of optical pulses via multi-light interference, where a neural network-assisted design algorithm is used to obtain the phase parameters in the CNC that satisfy the mapping relationship between feature information and OAM modes. Since the satisfied mapping relationship is performed in the optical domain, OAM modes can be demodulated at the speed of light. We show that this CNC can effectively identify the OAM modes ranging from -10 to +10, and the identification accuracy exceeds 90% under moderate turbulence intensity. As a proof of concept, we simulated a hexadecimal OAM-SK communication link, and the OAM signals under turbulent perturbations were successfully demodulated with an accuracy of 99.33%.

Abstract:Vortex beams (VBs), possessing a helical phase front and carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), have attracted considerable attention in optical communications for their mode orthogonality. A platform for achieving all-optical signal processing of VBs, however, remains elusive due to the limited light-field-manipulation capability. We introduce diffractive deep neural networks (${\mathrm{D}}^{2}$NNs) and their applications to process VBs. Exploiting the multiple-light-field-modulation ability of multilayer diffraction structures and the strong data-processing capability of deep neural networks, we reveal that ${\mathrm{D}}^{2}$NNs can manipulate multiple VBs by configuring the phase and amplitude distribution of diffractive screens. The diffraction efficiency and converted-mode purity are greater than 96%. After being trained, ${\mathrm{D}}^{2}$NNs with functions of hybrid-OAM-mode generation, identification, and conversion are obtained, and three typical types of all-optical signal-processing communication, (OAM-shift keying (OAM-SK), OAM multiplexing and demultiplexing, and OAM-mode switching) are successfully achieved. Our simulation results provide an approach that breaks the limitations of poor functionality and complex design in processing VBs, introducing the ${\mathrm{D}}^{2}$NN as a universal light-field-modulation platform.
Convolutional Neural Network-Assisted Optical Orbital Angular Momentum Recognition and Communication

Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes with high-accuracy and -speed is always a difficult issue in practically applying optical vortex beams (OVs). In this work, we propose and experimentally investigate a convolutional neural network (CNN) method for optical OAM mode identification and shift-keying (SK) communications. The CNN model, including convolution and pooling layers, was designed to extract mode information from the diffraction patterns produced by diffracting the OVs with a cylindrical lens. After trained with loads of studying samples, the CNN model has a good generation ability in recognizing the OAM modes of OVs ranging from -15 to 15. The recognition accuracy reaches 99% with the turbulence intensity of C n 2 = 1 × 10 -13 m-2/3 , Δz = 50 m. Even under the turbulence of C n 2 = 1 × 10 -12 m -2/3 , Δz = 50 m, the accuracy still exceeds 89%. By mapping and encoding a Lena gray image with the size of 100 × 100 pixels to two OAM channels, the OAM-SK signals with 900 modulation orders were successfully demodulated by the CNN model, and the image was well recovered after transmission. With an I5-8500 Central Processing Unit, this recognition process only takes 1 ×10 -3 s per mode. It is anticipated that the CNN methods might provide an effective way for identifying OAM modes with high-accuracy and -speed, which may have great potentials in OAM communication, quantum information processing, and astronomical application, etc.

Abstract:We proposed a multilayered spatial optical differentiator designing method by use of the deep neural network (DNN). After trained for approximately 30 h, the DNN is able to predict the reflection coefficient of a 12-layer multilayer film with high fidelity (validation mean squared error < 2.4x10(-4)). As a useful example, a second-order spatial optical differentiator was then designed. Compared with the general optimization method, the machine learning could help to quickly generate a wavefront computing device at an about 6-times faster speed. The performance of the designed device is confirmed from the comparison with the theoretical ideal operation output. Another first-order spatial optical differentiator was also designed to validate the generality of the method. The results indicate that the DNN may have a bright future in designing devices capable of all kinds of complex time-space wavefront mathematical operation, in particular based on the multilayer material systems.
Polarized deep diffractive neural network for classification, generation, multiplexing and de-multiplexing of orbital angular momentum modes

Abstract:The multiplexing and de-multiplexing of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams are critical issues in optical communication. Optical diffractive neural networks have been introduced to perform classification, generation, multiplexing and de-multiplexing of OAM beams. However, conventional diffractive neural networks cannot handle OAM modes with a varying spatial distribution of polarization directions. Herein, we propose a polarized optical deep diffractive neural network that is designed based on the concept of rectangular micro-structure meta-material. Our proposed polarized optical diffractive neural network is trained to classify, generate, multiplex and de-multiplex polarized OAM <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://beams.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> simulation results show that our network framework can successfully classify 14 kinds of orthogonally polarized vortex beams and de-multiplex the hybrid OAM beams into Gauss beams at two, three and four spatial positions respectively. 6 polarized OAM beams with identical total intensity and 8 cylinder vector beams with different topology charges also have been classified effectively. Additionally, results reveal that the network can generate hybrid OAM beams with high quality and multiplex two polarized linear beams into 8 kinds of cylinder vector beams.

Abstract:Machine learning with optical neural networks has featured unique advantages of the information processing including high speed, ultrawide bandwidths and low energy consumption because the optical dimensions (time, space, wavelength, and polarization) could be utilized to increase the degree of freedom. However, due to the lack of the capability to extract the information features in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) domain, the theoretically unlimited OAM states have never been exploited to represent the signal of the input/output nodes in the neural network model. Here, we demonstrate OAM-mediated machine learning with an all-optical convolutional neural network (CNN) based on Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam modes with diverse diffraction losses. The proposed CNN architecture is composed of a trainable OAM mode-dispersion impulse as a convolutional kernel for feature extraction, and deep-learning diffractive layers as a classifier. The resultant OAM mode-dispersion selectivity can be applied in information mode-feature encoding, leading to an accuracy as high as 97.2% for MNIST database through detecting the energy weighting coefficients of the encoded OAM modes, as well as a resistance to eavesdropping in point-to-point free-space transmission. Moreover, through extending the target encoded modes into multiplexed OAM states, we realize all-optical dimension reduction for anomaly detection with an accuracy of 85%. Our work provides a deep insight to the mechanism of machine learning with spatial modes basis, which can be further utilized to improve the performances of various machine-vision tasks by constructing the unsupervised learning-based auto-encoder.

Abstract:Diffractive deep neural network (D2NN), known for its high speed, low power consumption, and strong parallelism, has been widely applied across various fields, including pattern recognition, image processing, and image transmission. However, existing network architectures primarily focus on data representation within the original domain, with limited exploration of the latent space, thereby restricting the information mining capabilities and multifunctional integration of D2NNs. Here, we propose an all-optical autoencoder (OAE) framework that can encode the input wavefield into a prior shape distribution in the latent space and decode the encoded pattern back to the original wavefield. By leveraging the non-reciprocal property of D2NN, the OAE models function as encoders in one direction of wave propagation and as decoders in the opposite direction. We further apply the models to three key areas: image denoising, noise-resistant reconfigurable image classification, and image generation. Proof-of-concept experiments have been conducted to validate numerical simulations. Our OAE framework fully exploits the potential of latent space representations, enabling a single set of diffractive processors to simultaneously achieve image reconstruction, representation, and generation. It can be viewed as both a counterpart and an extension of the electronic autoencoder model. This work not only offers fresh insights into the design of optical generative models but also paves the way for developing and applying multifunctional, highly integrated, and general optical intelligent systems.

Abstract:Angular momentum of light can be divided into spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). Due to the theoretically unlimited orthogonal states, the physical dimension of OAM provides a potential solution to boost the information capacity. The OAM multiplexing and modulation techniques have been implemented to meet the continuous growth of bandwidth requirements, resulting in the concept of OAM optical communication. However, the performances of the traditional optical OAM detection techniques degrade seriously in the practical application of OAM optical communications. Thanks to the powerful data analysis advantages, the cutting-edge machine learning (ML) algorithms have been widely used in the field of image processing, laying the technical foundation for OAM recognition. This paper reviews the recent advances on OAM optical communications that are enhanced by ML methods. More than the traditional OAM detection methods, the OAM demodulation methods based on multiple network architectures, including the support vector machine (SVM), self-organizing map (SOM), feed-forward neural network (FNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), and diffractive deep optical neural network (D 2 NN), have been summarized. We also discuss the development of the spiking neural network and on-chip D 2 NN, opening a possible way to facilitate the future ultra-low power and ultra-fast OAM demodulation technology.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) can be employed as information carrier in optical communications, which include OAM multicasting where separate OAM beams are produced to construct one-to-many links, and OAM shift keying where different OAM states are used for symbol coding. However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve a hyperscale OAM multicasting with OAM shift keying simultaneously, due to the deviation of complex OAM spectral components at the transmitter. Here, we demonstrate the concept of OAM neural communication by developing a high-precision, noniterative and ultra-multi-user optical communication coding scheme based on a deep-learning U-net neural network. The neural network is trained with only small datasets (there are 1010 datasets in total, but only 103 datasets are used) to predict the OAM spectrum of ultra-high precision, with the mean square error (MSE) evaluated as 0.02 in all OAM channels. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate 1-to-40 multicasting with 16-ary shift keying in OAM communication. After a 3-meter free space transmission, we realize the encoding and decoding of 40 images with 16 gray values with a BER of 0. Moreover, our artificial intelligence-based methodology can be extended to manipulate three-dimensional OAM pixel arrays for holographic display and optical trapping.

Abstract:The demand for high-dimensional encoding techniques for communication systems is increasing. Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provide new degrees of freedom for optical communication. In this study, we propose an approach for increasing the channel capacity of free-space optical communication systems by integrating superimposed orbital angular momentum (OAM) states and deep learning techniques. We generate composite vortex beams with topological charges ranging from -4 to 8 and radial coefficients ranging from 0 to 3. A phase difference among each OAM state is introduced to significantly increase the number of available superimposed states, achieving up to 1024-ary codes with distinct features. To accurately decode the high-dimensional codes, we propose a two-step convolutional neural network (CNN). The first step is to make a coarse classification of the codes, while the second step is to finely identify the code and achieve decoding. Our proposed method demonstrates 100% accuracy achieved for the coarse classification after 7 epochs, 100% accuracy achieved for the fine identification after 12 epochs, and 99.84% accuracy achieved for testing, which is much faster and more accurate than one-step decoding. To demonstrate the feasibility of our method, we successfully transmitted a 24-bit true-color Peppers image once with a resolution of 64 × 64 in the laboratory, yielding a bit error rate of 0.
On-chip 4F-System Based on Concave Mirrors for Optical Neural Networks

Abstract:Optical neural networks (ONNs) have the potential for accelerating the inference of AI models, since ONNs have the advantage of high compute speed, and high parallelism. Integrated diffractive optical network for implementing parallel Fourier transforms has been proved efficient and is promising for large scale ONNs. We propose a novel on-chip Fourier transform implementation based on etched concave mirrors, enabling the construction of a photonic integrated 4F system to perform the convolution computation in the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). One of the input vectors is encoded in a modulator array at the object plane, and the Fourier transform of the other vector is encoded in another modulator array at the spectrum plane. We simulated the computing process by the diffractive propagation of the optical field from the object plane to the image plane according to the Kirchhoff's diffraction formula. Finally, we used our simulation system to replace the traditional convolution layers in the electronic system to implement CNNs on three different datasets, Iris- Flower, MNIST and Fashion-MNIST, and obtained 96.67%, 95.6% and 89.4% classification accuracies, respectively, demonstrating comparable performance with the electronic counterpart.

Abstract:Advancements in optical communications have increasingly focused on leveraging spatial-structured beams such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams for high-capacity data transmission. Conventional electronic convolutional neural networks exhibit constraints in efficiently demultiplexing OAM signals. Here, we introduce a hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural network that is capable of completing Fourier optics convolution and realizing intensity-recognition-based demultiplexing of multiplexed OAM beams under variable simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The core part of our demultiplexing system includes a 4F optics system employing a Fourier optics convolution layer. This optical spatial-filtering-based convolutional neural network is utilized to realize the training and demultiplexing of the 4-bit OAM-coded signals under simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The current system shows a demultiplexing accuracy of 72.84% under strong turbulence scenarios with 3.2 times faster training time than all electronic convolutional neural networks.

Abstract:As deep learning is penetrating almost every field of research and industry, the demand for computational improvements drives us to investigate new computing paradigms, such as optical and hybrid optoelectronic neural networks. Despite continuous efforts in both free-space and on-chip pathways, scant attention was paid to algorithms suitable for these new hardware. Here we introduce a model visualization method for diffractive optoelectronic neural network (see Fig. 1(a)), proposed in [1]. Specifically, we implement the visualization in a scenario of measuring orbital angular spectrum (OAM) of vortex light, a challenging task in OAM community. Our findings may inspire the link between intelligent computing and physical effects and applications.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM)-based optical encryption transmission plays an important role in optical communications. However, it remains challenging to encrypt the data with great security and decrypt them with high fidelity while maintaining large-capacity transmission. In this paper, we propose a novel optical encryption transmission technique, which dynamically converts OAM modes into speckle patterns with a randomly shaking diffuser for high-security encryption, and a pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) is later employed to extract encoded information hidden in the speckle patterns for high-fidelity information decryption. Our experiment demonstrates that the modulated OAM with an interval of a topological charge as small as 0.01 can be recognized by the CNN with an accuracy of 99.83%. To demonstrate its application, a cat image, encoded and encrypted by the designed system, has been successfully decrypted and decoded with a bit error rate of 0.008%. The security mechanism of the technique has also been experimentally verified and discussed. This technique thereby provides a new avenue for OAM-based encrypted optical information transmission.

Abstract:In this Letter we propose the Fourier-space diffractive deep neural network (F-D^{2}NN) for all-optical image processing that performs advanced computer vision tasks at the speed of light. The F-D^{2}NN is achieved by placing the extremely compact diffractive modulation layers at the Fourier plane or both Fourier and imaging planes of an optical system, where the optical nonlinearity is introduced from ferroelectric thin films. We demonstrated that F-D^{2}NN can be trained with deep learning algorithms for all-optical saliency detection and high-accuracy object classification.

Abstract:A coherently demodulated orbital angular momentum shift keying (OAM-SK) system over free-space turbulence channels using an image identifier based on convolutional neural network (CNN) as demodulator is proposed in this paper. Compared to the incoherent system, the proposed approach has the advantages of higher signal-to-ratio (SNR) of the detected image and fewer OAM topology charges employed for the same m-ary OAM-SK system. The CNN-based image identifier features in high recognition accuracy even under long free-space transmission and strong turbulence. In addition, the influence of the intensity of the local beam on the system performance, as well as the trade-off between the signal-to-noise ratio and the contrast of the received images, is fully investigated. Simulation results show that the demodulation accuracy of the proposed system with 16-ary OAM-SK system can be as high as >99% for 1500m of free-space optical (FSO) transmission distance with strong atmospheric turbulence and appropriate intensity of local Gaussian beam.
Astigmatic Speckle-learned OAM Shift Keying and OAM Multiplexing

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM)-carrying beams have gained significant attention in recent years due to their unique properties and potential to improve spectral efficiency and data transmission rates in optical communication systems. However, fully exploiting the capabilities of the entire OAM mode spectrum remains challenging. The emergence of AI-driven OAM mode identification has revolutionized the demultiplexing process within optical communication channels. OAM beams with different orders are orthogonal, allowing each beam to serve as a distinct signal carrier. Combining multiple OAM beams can effectively enhance channel capacity. In this paper, we adopt speckle-learned demultiplexing to demultiplex OAM beams via its speckle pattern that is more resilient to alignment and noise. However, the use of only non-intensity degenerate beams limits the utilization of multiplexing resources. This approach aims to fully leverage the full spectrum of OAM beams by introducing astigmatism in far-field speckle patterns using a tilted spherical convex lens. We then conduct a comprehensive analysis of two innovative information encoding techniques: OAM shift keying and OAM multiplexing. We successfully demonstrate an optical communication link encoded using both OAM shift keying and OAM multiplexing, followed by accurate decoding via speckle-learned demultiplexing.

High-resolution recognition of orbital angular momentum modes in asymmetric Bessel beams assisted by deep learning

Abstract:Fractional orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beams present a promising way to increase the data throughput in optical communication systems. Nevertheless, high-precision recognition of fractional OAM with different propagation distances remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) method to realize high-resolution recognition of OAM modalities, leveraging asymmetric Bessel beams imbued with fractional OAM. Experimental results prove that our method achieves a recognition accuracy exceeding 94.3% for OAM modes, with an interval of 0.05, and maintains a high recognition accuracy above 92% across varying propagation distances. The findings of our research will be poised to significantly contribute to the deployment of fractional OAM beams within the domain of optical communications.

Abstract:We introduce an all-optical Diffractive Deep Neural Network (D2NN) architecture that can learn to implement various functions after deep learning-based design of passive diffractive layers that work collectively. We experimentally demonstrated the success of this framework by creating 3D-printed D2NNs that learned to implement handwritten digit classification and the function of an imaging lens at terahertz spectrum. With the existing plethora of 3D-printing and other lithographic fabrication methods as well as spatial-light-modulators, this all-optical deep learning framework can perform, at the speed of light, various complex functions that computer-based neural networks can implement, and will find applications in all-optical image analysis, feature detection and object classification, also enabling new camera designs and optical components that can learn to perform unique tasks using D2NNs.
