Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of acquiring excellent image quality when is sampled the fully information in Fourier domain. However, when the sampling measurements is limited, image reconstruction by applying inverse Fourier transform algorithm would result in the severe ringing effect and the loss of image details. In this report, we propose a new algorithm for FSI reconstruction based on compressed sensing theory, which utilizes joint discrete gradient and non-local self-similarity priors, thus substantially using the prior knowledge of natural images in reconstruction process. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven to achieve excellent image quality when sampling all information in the Fourier domain. However, when the size of an imaging target is large, fully sampling Fourier coefficients would result in a large waste of sampling resources. An adaptive sampling method is proposed that is simple to implement and effectively improves the reconstructed image quality from undersampled Fourier coefficients. Through a rough estimation of spectrum energy distribution, the adaptive sampling trajectory is generated by the designed adaptive probability density function. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed method has overcome the limitations of the insufficient sampling rates, and the reconstruction images have obtained dramatic improvements. Abstract:In this Letter, we propose an approach to achieving photonics-enabled compressive sensing of sparse wideband radio frequency signals in which an incoherent broadband source is applied, and the mixing and integration functions are realized in the optical domain. A spectrum shaper is employed to slice and encode the spectrum of the broadband light according to a predetermined random sequence. Because of the dispersion-induced group delay, the mixing between the incoming signal and the random bit sequence is achieved. At the output of the spectrum shaper, an array of photodetectors is employed to realize down-sampling, and the input sparse signal can be captured in a single-shot mode. Since no pulsed laser is employed, our scheme obviates the need for time-domain synchronization between the repetitive ultra-fast pulses and the random sequence. Experimental demonstrations and numerical results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.
Adaptive High-Resolution Imaging Method Based on Compressive Sensing

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) is a signal sampling theory that originated about 16 years ago. It replaces expensive and complex receiving devices with well-designed signal recovery algorithms, thus simplifying the imaging system. Based on the application of CS theory, a single-pixel camera with an array-detection imaging system is established for high-pixel detection. Each detector of the detector array is coupled with a bundle of fibers formed by fusion of four bundles of fibers of different lengths, so that the target area corresponding to one detector is split into four groups of target information arriving at different times. By comparing the total amount of information received by the detector with the threshold set in advance, it can be determined whether the four groups of information are calculated separately. The simulation results show that this new system can not only reduce the number of measurements required to reconstruct high quality images but can also handle situations wherever the target may appear in the field of view without necessitating an increase in the number of detectors.

Abstract:Compressive sensing technique allows capturing fast phenomena at a much higher frame rate than the camera sensor, by recovering a frame sequence from their encoded combination. However, most conventional compressive video sensing methods limit the achieved frame rate improvement to tenfold and only support low resolution recovery. Making use of the camera's redundant spatial resolution for further frame rate improve, here we report a novel compressive video acquisition technique termed Sinusoidal Sampling Enhanced Compressive Camera (S2EC2) to encode denser frames within a snapshot. Specifically, we decompose the dense frames into groups and apply combinational coding: random codes within each group for compressive acquisition; group specific sinusoidal codes to multiplex different groups onto the high resolution sensor. The sinusoidal codes designed for these groups would shift their frequency components by different offsets in the Fourier domain and staggered the dominant frequencies of the coded measurements of these groups. Correspondingly, the reconstruction successfully separate coded measurements of different groups and recovers frames within each group. Besides, we also solve the implementation problem of insufficient gray scale spatial light modulation speed, and build a prototype achieving 2000 fps reconstruction with a 15.6 fps camera (the actual compression ratio is 0.009). The extensive experiments validate the proposed approach.

Abstract:We demonstrate single-shot compressive three-dimensional (3D) $(x, y, z)$ imaging based on interference coding. The depth dimension of the object is encoded into the interferometric spectra of the light field, resulting a $(x, y, \lambda)$ datacube which is subsequently measured by a single-shot spectrometer. By implementing a compression ratio up to $400$, we are able to reconstruct $1G$ voxels from a 2D measurement. Both an optimization based compressive sensing algorithm and a deep learning network are developed for 3D reconstruction from a single 2D coded measurement. Due to the fast acquisition speed, our approach is able to capture volumetric activities at native camera frame rates, enabling 4D (volumetric-temporal) visualization of dynamic scenes.

Abstract:Imaging through scattering media is a significant challenge in computational imaging. Recently, a breakthrough technique based on speckle scanning was proposed with outstanding imaging performance. However, the dense angular scanning of the incident-laser beam leads to a lengthy scanning process. In this paper, we propose a method based on compressive sensing (CS) to accelerate the data acquisition process. A new imaging system is proposed which adopts mutually incoherent laser beams as light sources and the intensity of each beam is modulated to perform CS measurement. High-resolution fluctuation of the total fluorescence can be well reconstructed from CS measurements with the learned dictionary as basis function. Experimental results show-that the proposed method can reduce nearly 70 percent of the data acquisition complexity without impairing the imaging quality.

Abstract:In order to lower the sampling rate and to reduce the huge amount of data in imaging of phased array total focus method, an ultrasound detection imaging method is proposed which is based on compressive sensing. The “analog-information converter” (AIC) is introduced into ultrasonic phased array total focus method imaging system, which could recover the original images with a reduced amount of data at a low sampling rate. The echo signal is sparsity sampled by a modified Analog-to-Information converter. And then s’it reconstructed by OMP algorithm and the final ultrasound imaging would be achieved. The echo data from the phased array is simulated in Field II. The simulation results show that the reconstructed images are as good as the original ones. The results show that by introducing the modified AIC system, the ultrasonic phased array total focus method imaging data could be compressed sampled, which break the Nyquist law. The recovered image could restore the detection image to the same extent at a compression rate of 89%, which could greatly reduce the sampling rate and total data volume of the ultrasonic detection system.

Abstract:Scanless three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology has received extensive attention in recent years due to its rapid detection and system reliability. Compressed sensing imaging technology provides a new solution for the realization of scan-free 3D imaging. In this paper, a 3D imaging method based on dual-frequency laser phase ranging based on compressed sensing technology is introduced and realized. Using the combination of dual-frequency laser phase ranging and compressed sensing theory, two-dimensional range reconstruction from the time-domain light intensity signal collected by a single-point detector is performed. Aiming at the spatial sparsity of the target scene, this technology uses the compressed sensing algorithm to solve the phase information of the two-dimensional spatial distribution contained in the time domain signal so as to invert the 3D image information of the target scene and realize the effect of scanning-free 3D imaging. First, the feasibility of the system is verified by simulations, and the imaging effects of different reconstruction algorithms on different terrains are compared. Second, a non-scanning 3D imaging experimental platform is designed and built. Finally, the 3D images of multiple objects with 32 × 32 resolution are successfully reconstructed through experiments with a compression ratio of 0.25. The ranging accuracy of this system is 0.05 m. This work is promising for applications in multiple objects’ fast detections.

Abstract:In this paper the authors describe the problem of acquisition of interfered signals and formulate a filtering problem. A frequency-selective compressed sensing technique is proposed as a solution to this problem. Signal acquisition is critical in facilitating frequency-selective compressed sensing. The authors propose a filtering compressed sensing parameter, which allows to assess if a given acquisition process makes frequency-selective compressed sensing possible for a given filtering problem. A numerical experiment which shows how the described method works in practice is conducted.

Abstract:The development of visible and infrared imaging systems continues to be an extremely active area of physics and engineering research despite the already considerable history of its development and accomplishments. This is due to the significant breakthroughs in the mathematics of image processing and the substantial advances in device performance over the last decade. Recently, many efforts in imaging that combine the relatively inexpensive and readily available computational power of microprocessors with new optical schemes have been undertaken to increase image resolution while decreasing acquisition time. One such approach that we have been investigating in our lab is based on compressive sensing mathematics coupled with micro-optoelectronic modulators. In essence, imaging via compressive sensing is a new strategy for imaging with a single detector in place of an imaging array. Additionally, the single detector can be replaced with a spectrometer to perform compressive hyperspectral imaging.

Abstract:The single-source frequency scanning interferometry (FSI) system does not have the ability to directly measure the dynamic optical path in principle, as it cannot directly distinguish between the frequency components introduced by a change in the dynamic optical path. To address the phase modulation problem introduced by both time-domain optical frequency modulation and time-domain optical path modulation in FSI dynamic measurement, we propose a decoupling method based on time-frequency analysis, which combines the variable convolution kernel Morlet wavelets (VCKMW) method with an adaptive optimal estimation method that can determine different motion modes, to realize the dynamic optical path measurement capability of FSI. Without any improvement in hardware, the proposed method could measure dual moving targets and recognize different motion modes. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified experimentally.

Abstract:Instantaneous frequency measurement(IFM) is one of the most important technologies in electronic war today.An IFM method based on optical asynchronous sampling and frequency space compression is proposed.This new IFM method's bandwidth is broader than 40GHz,while response curve can keep flat with in its bandwidth.And the precision of this new IFM method is more than 0.1MHz.When the signal to noise rate(SNR) is less than-13dB,the system still can measure the signal's frequency.The IFM can measure more than 4 kinds of frequency in the wireless signal at one time.When the interfering signal's power is more than 100 times of useful signal's,this new method still can measure the useful signal's frequency.The measurement can be finished in lees than 0.2μs.

Abstract:A scanning ion conductance microscope (SICM) is a multifunctional, high-resolution imaging technique whose non-contact nature makes it very suitable for imaging of biological samples such as living cells in a physiological environment. However, a drawback of hopping/backstep mode of SICM is its relatively slow imaging speed, which seriously restricts the study on the dynamic process of biological samples. This paper presents a new undersampled scanning method based on Compressed Sensing (CS-based scanning mode) theory to solve extended acquisition time issues in the hopping/backstep mode. Compressive sensing can break through the limit of the Nyquist sampling theorem and sample the original sparse/compressible signal at a rate lower than the Nyquist frequency. In the CS-based scanning mode, three sampling patterns, including the random sampling pattern and two kinds of sampling patterns produced by low-discrepancy sequences, were employed as the measurement locations to obtain the undersampled data with different undersampling ratios. Also TVAL3 (Total Variation Augmented Lagrangian ALternating-direction ALgorithm) was then utilized as a reconstruction algorithm to reconstruct the undersampled data. Compared with the nonuniform sampling points of random patterns at a low undersampling ratio, low-discrepancy sequences can produce a more uniform distribution point. Three types of samples with different complexity of topography were scanned by SICM using the conventional hopping/backstep mode and CS-based undersampled scanning mode. The comparisons of the imaging speed and quality with two scanning modes illustrate that the CS-based scanning mode can effectively speed up SICM imaging speed while not sacrificing the image quality. Also low-discrepancy sampling patterns can achieve a better reconstruction performance than that of the random sampling pattern under the same undersampling ratio. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Embracing the fact that one can recover certain signals and images from far fewer measurements than traditional methods use, compressive sensing (CS) provides solutions to huge amounts of data collection in phased array-based material characterization. This article describes how a CS framework can be utilized to effectively compress ultrasonic phased array images in time and frequency domains. By projecting the image onto its Discrete Cosine transform domain, a novel scheme was implemented to verify the potentiality of CS for data reduction, as well as to explore its reconstruction accuracy. The results from CIVA simulations indicate that both time and frequency domain CS can accurately reconstruct array images using samples less than the minimum requirements of the Nyquist theorem. For experimental verification of three types of artificial flaws, although a considerable data reduction can be achieved with defects clearly preserved, it is currently impossible to break Nyquist limitation in the time domain. Fortunately, qualified recovery in the frequency domain makes it happen, meaning a real breakthrough for phased array image reconstruction. As a case study, the proposed CS procedure is applied to the inspection of an engine cylinder cavity containing different pit defects and the results show that orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-based CS guarantees the performance for real application.

Abstract:Cameras for imaging in short and mid-wave infrared spectra are significantly more expensive than their counterparts in visible imaging. As a result, high-resolution imaging in those spectrum remains beyond the reach of most consumers. Over the last decade, compressive sensing (CS) has emerged as a potential means to realize inexpensive short-wave infrared cameras. One approach for doing this is the single-pixel camera (SPC) where a single detector acquires coded measurements of a high-resolution image. A computational reconstruction algorithm is then used to recover the image from these coded measurements. Unfortunately, the measurement rate of a SPC is insufficient to enable imaging at high spatial and temporal resolutions. We present a focal plane array-based compressive sensing (FPA-CS) architecture that achieves high spatial and temporal resolutions. The idea is to use an array of SPCs that sense in parallel to increase the measurement rate, and consequently, the achievable spatio-temporal resolution of the camera. We develop a proof-of-concept prototype in the short-wave infrared using a sensor with 64$\times$ 64 pixels; the prototype provides a 4096$\times$ increase in the measurement rate compared to the SPC and achieves a megapixel resolution at video rate using CS techniques.

Abstract:Single-pixel cameras based on the concepts of compressed sensing (CS) leverage the inherent structure of images to retrieve them with far fewer measurements and operate efficiently over a significantly broader spectral range than conventional silicon-based cameras. Recently, photonic time-stretch (PTS) technique facilitates the emergence of high-speed single-pixel cameras. A significant breakthrough in imaging speed of single-pixel cameras enables observation of fast dynamic phenomena. However, according to CS theory, image reconstruction is an iterative process that consumes enormous amounts of computational time and cannot be performed in real time. To address this challenge, we propose a novel single-pixel imaging technique that can produce high-quality images through rapid acquisition of their effective spatial Fourier spectrum. We employ phase-shifting sinusoidal structured illumination instead of random illumination for spectrum acquisition and apply inverse Fourier transform to the obtained spectrum for image restoration. We evaluate the performance of our prototype system by recognizing quick response (QR) codes and flow cytometric screening of cells. A frame rate of 625 kHz and a compression ratio of 10 recognition rate of the QR code. An imaging flow cytometer enabling high-content screening with an unprecedented throughput of 100,000 cells/s is also demonstrated. For real-time imaging applications, the proposed single-pixel microscope can significantly reduce the time required for image reconstruction by two orders of magnitude, which can be widely applied in industrial quality control and label-free biomedical imaging.
