Impact of Green and Blue Space on Ecosystem Services in Beijing

Abstract:Green and blue space (GBS) is the main ecological infrastructure for urban areas, providing multiple ecosystem services (ES). However, the impacts of GBS changes on ES tend to vary over space and time and have not been studied in sufficient detail in emerging economies. China has initiated various urban greening policies over the past decades, but it remains unclear how these policies and urbanization developments affect GBS. This study quantifies the impact of GBS changes on ES in Beijing from 2000 to 2020, as an example of an emerging economy. Moreover, we extracted critical spatial metrics for evaluating the relationship between GBS and ES and explored the impact of urbanization on these metrics through principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression (MLR). The results show that the GBS pattern tends to be fragmented and is detrimental to ES. The percentage of like adjacencies (PLADJ) and landscape shape index (LSI) of aggregation indices of the GBS pattern has a significant influence on ES. This paper further found that the GBS area in the study area has decreased by about 1200 km2 due to the conversion of farmland to construction land in the suburbs, with a reduction of comprehensive ESs. PCA and MLR analysis found that urban development and the natural environment are two principal components. During the study period, the two main factors gradually contributed to an increase in the GBS area but also caused the pattern to be fragmented. Moreover, socioeconomic and policy factors are key influences on GBS area and PLADJ, while natural factors primarily affect LSI. In conclusion, urbanization development rates and strategies at different stages have impacted GBS differently. We have provided space planning advice to achieve synergy between ES supply and demand through optimal GBS.
