Abstract:The detrimental impact of noise on sensing performance in quantum metrology has been widely recognized by researchers in the field. However, there are no explicit fundamental laws of physics stating that noise invariably weakens quantum metrology. We reveal that phase-covariant (PC) noise either degrades or remains neutral to sensing precision, whereas non-phase-covariant (NPC) noise can potentially enhance parameter estimation, surpassing even the ultimate precision limit achievable in the absence of noise. This implies that a non-Hermitian quantum sensor may outperform its Hermitian counterpart in terms of sensing performance. To illustrate and validate our theory, we present several paradigmatic examples of magnetic field metrology.

Optimality and Noise-Resilience of Critical Quantum Sensing

Abstract:We compare critical quantum sensing to passive quantum strategies to perform frequency estimation, in the case of single-mode quadratic Hamiltonians. We show that, while in the unitary case both strategies achieve precision scaling quadratic with the number of photons, in the presence of dissipation this is true only for critical strategies. We also establish that working at the exceptional point or beyond threshold provides sub-optimal performance. This critical enhancement is due to the emergence of a transient regime in the open critical dynamics, and is invariant to temperature changes. When considering both time and system size as resources, for both strategies the precision scales linearly with the product of the total time and the number of photons, in accordance with fundamental bounds. However, we show that critical protocols outperform optimal passive strategies if preparation and measurement times are not negligible. Our results are applicable to a broad variety of critical sensors whose phenomenology can be reduced to that of a single-mode quadratic Hamiltonian, including systems described by finite-component and fully-connected models.

Quantum sensing of phase-covariant optical channels

Abstract:We obtain universal (i.e., probe and measurement-independent) performance bounds on ancilla-assisted quantum sensing of multiple parameters of phase-covariant optical channels under energy and mode-number constraints. We first show that for any such constrained problem, an optimal ancilla-entangled probe can always be found whose reduced state on the modes probing the channel is diagonal in the photon-number basis. For parameters that are encoded in single-mode Gaussian channels, we derive a universal upper bound on the quantum Fisher information matrix that delineates the roles played by the energy and mode constraints. We illustrate our results for sensing of the transmittance of a thermal loss channel under both the no-passive-signature and passive-signature paradigms, and in the problem of sensing the noise variance of an additive-noise channel. In both cases, we show that two-mode squeezed vacuum probes are near-optimal under the constraints in the regime of low signal brightness, i.e., per-mode average photon number. More generally, our work sets down a uniform framework for readily evaluating universal limits for any sensing problem involving Gaussian channels.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate quantum advantages in loss sensing when the two-mode squeezed vacuum state is used as a probe. Following an experimental demonstration in PRX 4, 011049, we consider a quantum scheme in which the signal mode is passed through the target and a thermal noise is introduced to the idler mode before they are measured. We consider two detection strategies of practical relevance: coincidence-counting and intensity-difference measurement, which are widely used in quantum sensing and imaging experiments. By computing the signal-to-noise ratio, we verify that quantum advantages persist even under strong thermal background noise, in comparison with the classical scheme which uses a single-mode coherent state that directly suffers from the thermal noise. Such robustness comes from the fact that the signal mode suffers from the thermal noise in the classical scheme, while in the quantum scheme, the idler mode does. For a fairer comparison, we further investigate a different setup in which the thermal noise is introduced to the signal mode in the quantum schemes. In this new setup, we show that the quantum advantages are significantly reduced. Remarkably, however, under an optimum measurement scheme associated with the quantum Fisher information, we show that the two-mode squeezed vacuum state does exhibit a quantum advantage over the entire range of the environmental noise and loss. We expect this work to serve as a guide for experimental demonstrations of quantum advantages in loss parameter sensing, which is subject to lossy and noisy environment.

Abstract: The influence of outside quantum noises on the amplification of weak measurements is investigated. Three typical quantum noises are discussed. The maximum values of the pointer's shifts decrease sharply with the strength of the depolarizing channel and phase damping. In order to obtain significant amplified signals, the preselection quantum systems must be kept away from the two quantum noises. Interestingly, the amplification effect is immune to the amplitude damping noise.

Abstract:Quantum measurements are crucial for extracting information from quantum systems, but they are error-prone due to hardware imperfections in near-term devices. Measurement errors can be mitigated through classical post-processing, based on the assumption of a classical noise model. However, the coherence of quantum measurements leads to unavoidable quantum noise that defies this assumption. In this work, we introduce a two-stage procedure to systematically tackle such quantum noise in measurements. The idea is intuitive: we first detect and then eliminate quantum noise. In the first stage, inspired by coherence witness in the resource theory of quantum coherence, we design an efficient method to detect quantum noise. It works by fitting the difference between two measurement statistics to the Fourier series, where the statistics are obtained using maximally coherent states with relative phase and maximally mixed states as inputs. The fitting coefficients quantitatively benchmark quantum noise. In the second stage, we design various methods to eliminate quantum noise, inspired by the Pauli twirling technique. They work by executing randomly sampled Pauli gates before the measurement device and conditionally flipping the measurement outcomes in such a way that the effective measurement device contains only classical noise. We numerically demonstrate the two-stage procedure's feasibility on the Baidu Quantum Platform. Notably, the results reveal significant suppression of quantum noise in measurement devices and substantial enhancement in quantum computation accuracy. We highlight that the two-stage procedure complements existing measurement error mitigation techniques, and they together form a standard toolbox for manipulating measurement errors in near-term quantum devices.

Abstract:QSNs (QSNs) incorporate quantum sensing and quantum communication to achieve Heisenberg precision and unconditional security by leveraging quantum properties such as superposition and entanglement. However, the QSNs deploying noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices face near-term practical challenges. In this paper, we employ variational quantum sensing (VQS) to optimize sensing configurations in noisy environments for the physical quantity of interest, e.g., magnetic-field sensing for navigation, localization, or detection. The VQS algorithm is variationally and evolutionarily optimized using a genetic algorithm for tailoring a variational or parameterized quantum circuit (PQC) structure that effectively mitigates quantum noise effects. This genetic VQS algorithm designs the PQC structure possessing the capability to create a variational probe state that metrologically outperforms the maximally entangled or product quantum state under bit-flip, dephasing, and amplitude-damping quantum noise for both single-parameter and multiparameter NISQ sensing, specifically as quantified by the quantum Fisher information. Furthermore, the quantum anonymous broadcast (QAB) shares the sensing information in the VQS network, ensuring anonymity and untraceability of sensing data. The broadcast bit error probability (BEP) is further analyzed for the QAB protocol under quantum noise, showing its robustness—i.e., error-free resilience—against bit-flip noise as well as the low-noise BEP behavior. This work provides a scalable framework for integrated quantum anonymous sensing and communication, particularly in a variational and untraceable manner.

Abstract:Quantum sensing, using quantum properties of sensors, can enhance resolution, precision, and sensitivity of imaging, spectroscopy, and detection. An intriguing question is: Can the quantum nature (quantumness) of sensors and targets be exploited to enable schemes that are not possible for classical probes or classical targets? Here we show that measurement of the quantum correlations of a quantum target indeed allows for sensing schemes that have no classical counterparts. As a concrete example, in the case that the second-order classical correlation of a quantum target could be totally concealed by non-stationary classical noise, the higher-order quantum correlations can single out a quantum target from the classical noise background, regardless of the spectrum, statistics, or intensity of the noise. Hence a classical-noise-free sensing scheme is proposed. This finding suggests that the quantumness of sensors and targets is still to be explored to realize the full potential of quantum sensing. New opportunities include sensitivity beyond classical approaches, non-classical correlations as a new approach to quantum many-body physics, loophole-free tests of the quantum foundation, et cetera.

Abstract:Quantum enhanced sensing provides a powerful tool for the precise measurement of physical parameters that is applicable in many areas of science and technology. The achievable gain in sensitivity is largely limited by the influence of noise and decoherence. Here, we propose a paradigm of adiabatic quantum parameter amplification to overcome this limitation. We demonstrate that it allows to achieve generic robust quantum sensing, namely it is robust against noise that may even acting on the same degree of freedom as the field. Furthermore, the proposal achieves entanglement-free Heisenberg limit sensitivity that surpasses the limit of classical statistics.

Abstract:Using a flow chart representation of quantum optomechanical dynamics, we design coherent quantum-noise-cancellation schemes that can eliminate the backaction noise induced by radiation pressure at all frequencies and thus overcome the standard quantum limit of force sensing. The proposed schemes can be regarded as novel examples of coherent feedforward quantum control.

More buck-per-shot: Why learning trumps mitigation in noisy quantum sensing

Abstract:Quantum sensing is one of the most promising applications for quantum technologies. However, reaching the ultimate sensitivities enabled by the laws of quantum mechanics can be a challenging task in realistic scenarios where noise is present. While several strategies have been proposed to deal with the detrimental effects of noise, these come at the cost of an extra shot budget. Given that shots are a precious resource for sensing -- as infinite measurements could lead to infinite precision -- care must be taken to truly guarantee that any shot not being used for sensing is actually leading to some metrological improvement. In this work, we study whether investing shots in error-mitigation, inference techniques, or combinations thereof, can improve the sensitivity of a noisy quantum sensor on a (shot) budget. We present a detailed bias-variance error analysis for various sensing protocols. Our results show that the costs of zero-noise extrapolation techniques outweigh their benefits. We also find that pre-characterizing a quantum sensor via inference techniques leads to the best performance, under the assumption that the sensor is sufficiently stable.

Abstract:Nonclassical states are essential for optics-based quantum information processing, but their fragility limits their utility for practical scenarios in which loss and noise inevitably degrade, if not destroy, nonclassicality. Exploiting nonclassical states in quantum metrology yields sensitivity advantages over all classical schemes delivering the same energy per measurement interval to the sample being probed. These enhancements, almost without exception, are severely diminished by quantum decoherence. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an entanglement-enhanced sensing system that is resilient to quantum decoherence. We employ entanglement to realize a 20% signal-to-noise ratio improvement over the optimum classical scheme in an entanglement-breaking environment plagued by 14 dB of loss and a noise background 75 dB stronger than the returned probe light. Our result suggests that advantageous quantum-sensing technology could be developed for practical situations.

Model-Based Qubit Noise Spectroscopy

Abstract:Qubit noise spectroscopy (QNS) is a valuable tool for both the characterization of a qubit's environment and as a precursor to more effective qubit control to improve qubit fidelities. Existing approaches to QNS are what the classical spectrum estimation literature would call "non-parametric" approaches, in that a series of probe sequences are used to estimate noise power at a set of points or bands. In contrast, model-based approaches to spectrum estimation assume additional structure in the form of the spectrum and leverage this for improved statistical accuracy or other capabilities, such as superresolution. Here, we derive model-based QNS approaches using inspiration from classical signal processing, primarily though the recently developed Schrodinger wave autoregressive moving-average (SchWARMA) formalism for modeling correlated noise. We show, through both simulation and experimental data, how these model-based QNS approaches maintain the statistical and computational benefits of their classical counterparts, resulting in powerful new estimation approaches. Beyond the direct application of these approaches to QNS and quantum sensing, we anticipate that the flexibility of the underlying models will find utility in adaptive feedback control for quantum systems, in analogy with their role in classical adaptive signal processing and control.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a general method allowing us to unravel microscopic noise events that affect a continuous quantum variable. Such unraveling is achieved by frequent measurements of a discrete variable coupled to the continuous one. The experimental realization involves photons traversing a noisy channel. There, their polarization, whose coupling to the photons' spatial wave packet is subjected to stochastic noise, is frequently measured in the quantum Zeno regime. The measurements not only preserve the polarization state, but also enable the recording of the full noise statistics from the spatially resolved detection of the photons emerging from the channel. Abstract:Due to the interaction with the environment, a quantum state is often affected by the different types of noises which becomes to one of the biggest problems for practical quantum computation. We study the possibility of protecting the mixed state of a quantum system that goes through noise by weak measurements and control operations. The aim is to find the optimal measurement strength and control operations and make the input and output states as close as possible. We show that our scheme can effectively protect arbitrary mixed states against typical types of noise sources: amplitude damping, phase damping and amplitude-phase damping. The optimal measurement and control operators are deduced in different bases of the Bloch sphere to find the best control scheme for each type of noise. The effectiveness of our control scheme is demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:Detecting and characterizing decoherence-inducing noise sources is critical for developing scalable quantum technologies and deploying quantum sensors that operate at molecular scales. Yet, existing methods for such noise spectroscopy face fundamental difficulties, including their reliance on severe approximations and the need for extensively averaged measurements. Here, we propose an alternative approach that processes the commonly performed dynamical decoupling-based coherence measurements using a novel self-consistent optimization framework to extract the noise power spectrum that characterizes the interaction between a qubit or quantum sensor and its environment. Our approach adopts minimal assumptions and is robust to the presence of measurement errors. We introduce a protocol to quantify confidence intervals and a physically motivated heuristic to determine which new dynamical decoupling measurement can improve spectral reconstruction. We employ our method to reconstruct the noise spectrum of a nitrogen-vacancy sensor in diamond, resolving previously undetected nuclear species at the diamond surface and revealing that the previous measurements of low-frequency noise had overestimated its strength by an order of magnitude. Our method's noise spectrum reconstructions uncover previously unsuspected structure and offer unprecedented accuracy, setting the stage for precision noise spectroscopy-based quantum metrology.

Abstract:Achieving quantum-enhanced performances when measuring unknown quantities requires developing suitable methodologies for practical scenarios, that include noise and the availability of a limited amount of resources. Here, we report on the optimization of sub-standard quantum limit Bayesian multiparameter estimation in a scenario where a subset of the parameters describes unavoidable noise processes in an experimental photonic sensor. We explore how the optimization of the estimation changes depending on which parameters are either of interest or are treated as nuisance ones. Our results show that optimizing the multiparameter approach in noisy apparata represents a significant tool to fully exploit the potential of practical sensors operating beyond the standard quantum limit for broad resources range.

Abstract:Essential to the functionality of qubit-based sensors are control protocols, which shape their response in frequency space. However, in common control routines out-of-band spectral leakage complicates interpretation of the sensor’s signal. In this work, we leverage discrete prolate spheroidal sequences (a.k.a. Slepian sequences) to synthesize provably optimal narrowband controls ideally suited to spectral estimation of a qubit’s noisy environment. Experiments with trapped ions demonstrate how spectral leakage may be reduced by orders of magnitude over conventional controls when a near resonant driving field is modulated by Slepians, and how the desired narrowband sensitivity may be tuned using concepts from RF engineering. We demonstrate that classical multitaper techniques for spectral analysis can be ported to the quantum domain and combined with Bayesian estimation tools to experimentally reconstruct complex noise spectra. We then deploy these techniques to identify previously immeasurable frequency-resolved amplitude noise in our qubit’s microwave synthesis chain.
