Abstract:Flat optics has demonstrated great advances in miniaturizing conventional bulky optical elements due to recent developments in metasurface design. Specific applications of such designs include spatial differentiation and the compression of free-space. However, metasurfaces designed for such applications are often polarization-dependent and are designed for a single functionality. In this work, we introduce a polarization-independent metasurface structure by designing guided resonances with degenerate band curvatures in a photonic crystal slab. Our device can perform both free-space compression and spatial differentiation when operated at different frequencies at normal incidence. This work demonstrates the promise of dispersion engineering in metasurface design to create ultrathin devices with polarization-independent functionality.
Polarization-controlled Bifunctional Metasurfaces in Transmission and Reflection Geometries

Abstract:Recently, gradient metasurfaces, have paved a new direction to the field of metamaterial with many remarkable achievements, including generalized Snell's law, new bridge to couple surface wave, meta-holograms, planar optical devices, etc.. In spite of these great developments, there are some aspects of the metasurfaces needed to be improved. For example, most of the previous systems only operate with the single functionality, which obviously does not satisfy the high integration requirement of the optical devices in modern science and technology. In this paper, we experimentally realized the bifunctional operation based on the polarization-dependent metasurfaces in both reflection and transmission geometry. In the former case, the functionality of the metasurface can be freely switched between focusing and surface wave excitation by rotating the polarization direction of the input linear polarized electromagnetic wave. In the latter case, the metasurface can serve as either a focusing lens or a beam deflector under different polarizations. Compared to the previous works, our device can two distinct functionalities with very high efficiency. The finding may suggest a new avenue to the designs of bifunctional devices.
Identical Metasurface Simultaneously Creates Arbitrary Assembly of Polarization States Via Geometrical-Scaling-induced Phase Modulations

Abstract:By introducing geometrical-scaling-induced phase modulations, we demonstrate in this work that an assembly of circularly polarized and linearly polarized states can be simultaneously generated by a single metasurface made of L-shaped resonators with different geometrical features. Each resonator of the metasurface diffracts either a right-handed or left-handed circular polarized states, with an additional phase modulation determined by its geometry features. The interaction of the diffracted fields leads to the desired output beams, where the polarization state and the propagation direction can be accurately controlled. As an example of potential applications, we show that an image can be encoded with different polarization profiles at different diffraction orders and decoded with a polarization analyzer. This approach resolves a challenging problem in integrated optics and is inspiring for on-chip quantum information processing.
Polarization-independent metasurfaces based on bound states in the continuum with high Q-factor and resonance modulation

Abstract:Metasurfaces offer a powerful platform for effective light manipulation, which is crucial for advanced optical technologies. While designs of polarization-independent structures have reduced the need for polarized illumination, they are often limited by either low Q factors or low resonance modulation. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate a metasurface with polarization-independent quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC), where the unit cell consists of four silicon squares arranged in a two-dimensional array and the resonance properties can be controlled by adjusting the edge length difference between different squares. Our metasurface experimentally achieves a Q factor of approximately 100 and a resonance modulation of around 50%. This work addresses a common limitation in previous designs, which either achieved high Q factors exceeding 200 with a resonance modulation of less than 10%, leading to challenging signal-to-noise ratio requirements, or achieved strong resonance modulation with Q factors of only around 10, limiting light confinement and fine-tuning capabilities. In contrast, our metasurface ensures that the polarization-independent signal is sharp and distinct within the system, reducing the demands on signal-to-noise ratio and improving robustness. Experiments show the consistent performance across different polarization angles. This work contributes to the development of versatile optical devices, enhancing the potential for the practical application of BIC-based designs in areas such as optical filtering and sensing.

Abstract:Manipulation of polarization states with metasurfaces is a compelling approach for on-chip photonics and portable information processing. Yet it remains challenging to generate different types of polarization states with a single piece of a metasurface. This paper demonstrates a metasurface to resolve this issue, which is made of L-shaped resonators with different geometrical sizes. Each resonator diffracts a right- or left-handed circularly polarized state with an additional geometrical-scaling-induced phase. The type of polarization state of each diffracted beam is determined by the enantiomorphism, size, and spatial sequence of the resonators in the unit cell. The number of the beams is modulated by the geometry and separation of the resonators. We provide examples to illustrate how to achieve the specific number of diffracted beams with the desired polarization states in experiments. We suggest that this strategy can be applied for integrated photonics and portable quantum information processing.

Abstract:Metasurface-based optical computing has been a topic of interest for many researchers, aimed at implementing high-speed and efficient image processing in small equipment. However, the existing designs cannot work well in the aspects of spatial resolution, polarization and azimuth angle simultaneously. Here, we present a 2D differential metasurface with a honeycomb photonic structure as the basic unit, which not only satisfies isotropy and polarization independence, but also has a NA as high as 0.44. Through numerical verification, the proposed metasurface can produce the result of second-order differential operation of Gaussian functions in 1D space, and can be used to implement edge detection of objects in an image as well. Our results provide new opportunities for optical analog computing and computer vision applications.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal transmission, resulting from the breaking of Lorentz reciprocity, plays a pivotal role in nonreciprocal communication systems by enabling asymmetric forward and backward propagations. Metasurfaces endowed with nonreciprocity represent a compact and facile platform for manipulating electromagnetic waves in an unprecedented manner. However, most passive metasurfaces that achieve nonreciprocal transmissions are polarization dependent. While incorporation of active elements or nonlinear materials can achieve polarization-independent nonreciprocal metasurfaces, the complicated configurations limit their practical applications. To address this issue, we propose and demonstrate a passive and linear metasurface that combines magneto-optical and chiral effects, enabling polarization-independent isolation. The designed metasurface achieves a transmittance of up to 80%, with a high contrast between forward and backward propagations. Our work introduces a novel mechanism for nonreciprocal transmission and lays the foundation for the development of compact, polarization-insensitive nonreciprocal devices.

Polarization Conversion in Anisotropic Dielectric Metasurfaces Originating from Bound States in the Continuum

Abstract:We use the semianalytical Cartesian multipole method to investigate the light transmission and reflection spectra of anisotropic dielectric metasurfaces, and extend the multipole decompositions method to account for cross-polarization conversion effects. We observe sharp high-Q resonances arising from a distortion of symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum in asymmetric dielectric metasurfaces, i.e., quasibound states in the continuum. In addition, by further introducing in-plane symmetric breaking perturbation, the polarization conversions of linearly polarized light can be achieved through quasibound states in the continuum. With the aid of temporal coupled-mode theory, we can obtain the limit of cross-conversion under single high-Q resonance, i.e., 0.25. Our work will help to design dielectric metasurfaces to control the polarization states of light.

Abstract:Polarization is one of the most important properties of light, which is also a typical dimension for light field manipulation. With specially designed meta-atoms and tailorable phase distribution, metasurfaces have been employed to achieve arbitrary polarization state in linear regime. Moreover, metasurface is also a platform for various nonlinear light generation, which can be used to realize an integrated polarized light source combined with its powerful capability of polarization manipulation. Here, we demonstrate a nonlinear plasmonic metasurface that is able to simultaneously realize nonlinear light generation and polarization manipulation. Split-ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) rotated by 90 degrees are selected to generate orthogonal polarizations of second harmonic (SH) components under the same linear polarized fundamental wave (FW), respectively. Phase difference and amplitude ratio between SH components can be tailored by adjusting the arm length of SRRs and CSRRs. By introducing spatial offset between adjacent basic supercells, we can achieve phase difference between two orthogonal components and thus realize polarization control of output SH emission and beam splitting at the same time. Two separated SH beams with orthogonal circular polarizations are achieved from a linearly polarized FW, and illuminated by circularly polarized FW, the same nonlinear plasmonic metasurface can generate linearly polarized SH, which can be viewed as a SH quarter-wave plate. Furthermore, arbitrary elliptical polarized SH can also be obtained from properly designed nonlinear metasurfaces. Our design provides a new approach for miniaturized light source for special polarization requirement, which may have potential applications in integrated optics.
Merging high localization and TE-TM polarization degeneracy of guided waves in dielectric metasurfaces

Abstract:The polarization degree of freedom is an inherent feature of plane waves propagating in an isotropic homogeneous medium. The miniaturization of optical systems leads to the high localization of electromagnetic waves, but also to the loss of polarization control, namely, breaking TE-TM polarization degeneracy. In this work, we discover the near-field polarization degree of freedom for highly localized guided waves propagating along a dielectric metasurface. We demonstrate the opportunity to create a metasurface with the degenerate TE-TM polarization spectrum for the required operating wavelength and different constitutive materials. In particular, we analyze several possible implementations including silicon nitride and ceramic metasurfaces consisting of disk-shaped resonators, and evaluate the impact of substrate. Finally, we experimentally implement one of the metasurface designs and verify its broadband degenerate TE-TM polarization spectrum. The obtained results form a fundamentally new platform for the planar polarization devices utilizing the polarization degree of freedom of localized light.

Abstract:In recent years, optical metasurfaces, i.e., surface‐confined arrays of engineered nanostructured elements (meta‐atoms), have become an emerging research area owing to their unprecedented capabilities of manipulating light with subwavelength spatial resolutions. The metasurfaces revolutionize thereby conventional bulky optics with compact planar elements. Since the polarization is one of the intrinsic properties of light and of crucial importance for fundamental sciences and practical applications, the polarization‐encoded functional optical metasurfaces featuring compactness, integration compatibility, and multiple functionalities have been in the focus of intensive research and development. Here, we review the basic principles and emerging applications of polarization‐encoded functional metasurfaces operating in the optical range. Starting with the description of different polarization states, we proceed with considerations of how to interconvert and detect the state of polarization. Then we summarize the main achievements in polarization‐multiplexing metasurface components (metadevices). Finally, we conclude our review with a personal outlook on potential directions in this fast‐growing research area.
Polarization-Insensitive Transmissive Metasurfaces Using Pancharatnam–Berry and Resonant Phases in Microwave Band

Abstract:Most of the existing metasurfaces are effective for the incident wave with the specific circularly polarized (CP) or linearly polarized (LP) state, that is the polarization-sensitive metasurface. This drawback dramatically hinders the practical use of the metasurface. Herein, this paper presents a strategy of polarization-insensitive transmissive microwave metasurfaces to manipulate the incident wave with arbitrary CP and LP states. The metasurface consists of polarization-insensitive unit cells. For the left circularly polarized (LCP) and right circularly polarized (RCP) incident waves, the same abrupt phase covering 0° to 360° can be realized by combining the Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) and resonant phases. As the arbitrary LP wave can decompose into the LCP and RCP waves, metasurfaces consisting of designed unit cells are valid for any polarization states. The polarization-insensitive transmissive microwave metalens and orbital angular momentum multiplexing metasurface working at 23 GHz are devised for verification. Simulation and measurement results verify the availability of the approach. The proposed method is suitable for designing microwave-transmissive metasurfaces capable of polarization insensitivity.

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces are capable of completely manipulating the phase, amplitude, and polarization of light with high spatial resolutions. The emerging design based on high-index and low-loss dielectrics has led to the realization of novel metasurfaces with high transmissions, but these devices usually operate at the limited bandwidth, and are sensitive to the incident polarization. Here, we report the realization of the polarization-independent and high-efficiency silicon metasurfaces spanning the visible wavelengths about 200 nm. The fabricated computer-generated meta-holograms exhibit a 90% diffraction efficiency, which are verified by gradient metasurfaces with measured efficiencies up to 93% at 670 nm, and exceeding 75% at the wavelengths from 600 to 800 nm for the two orthogonally polarized incidences. These dielectric metasurfaces effectively decouple the phase modulation from the polarization states and frequencies for visible light, which hold great potential for novel flat optical devices operating over a broad spectrum. Ultrathin Dual-Band Metasurface Polarization Converter

Abstract:Metamaterials offer the freedom to manipulate the polarization states of light at the subwavelength scale. However, previous designs generally made use of single resonance and, hence, only function for one specific incident polarization within a single-frequency band. In this paper, we present a dual-band metasurface based on a concentric rectangular arrangement to control the polarizations of both linearly and circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. We show that, on the one hand, the proposed metasurface structure can convert the polarization of linearly polarized waves to the cross direction in two broad frequency bands 4.40–5.30 GHz and 9.45–13.60 GHz. On the other hand, this design can also reflect circularly polarized waves without changing the handedness in two frequency bands 4.47–5.35 GHz and 9.57–13.57 GHz. For both cases, average polarization conversion efficiency larger than 86% was obtained in our experiment. The numerical simulations reveal that the dual-band cross-polarization coupling results from the strong electric and magnetic resonances between the top and bottom layers. The ultrathin polarization converter experimentally realized in this paper provides an important stepping stone for the future design of other dual-band metasurface devices and is believed to be extendable to higher frequency regimes.

Abstract:An additively manufactured polarization‐insensitive metasurface is designed for arbitrary polarization conversion and wavefront shaping. The polarization conversion angle and the wavefront are fixed regardless of the polarization of linearly polarized input. The metasurface is fast prototyped by multi‐materials‐integrated additive manufacturing. Arbitrarily manipulating the polarization and wavefront of electromagnetic waves using ultrathin and highly efficient devices is desirable for many systems. Ultrathin broadband polarization‐insensitive transmissive metasurfaces, which can achieve the same polarization conversion and wavefront shaping for arbitrary linearly polarized incident waves, are proposed. The meta‐atom is composed of a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna with a group of phase delay lines connecting them. The rotation of the transmitting antenna introduces the polarization conversion, and the different lengths of the transmission lines provide [−π, π] phase shift for wavefront shaping. Both the polarization conversion and wavefront shaping functions are polarization insensitive. Differential feeding is applied to both the transmitting and the receiving patch antennas to improve the transmission efficiency. The prototypes are conveniently printed by using the additive manufacturing technique. Two polarization‐insensitive metasurfaces are designed and measured to demonstrate. One of them produces vortex beams with 90° polarization conversion, and the other achieves anomalous refraction with 45° polarization conversion.

Fast Design Of Polarization Independent Metasurfaces For Shaping Electromagnetic Waves

Abstract:The metasurfaces have recently been demonstrated to provide full control of the phase responses of electromagnetic (EM) wave scattering over subwavelength scales, enabling a wide range of practical applications. Here, a method for fast design of polarization-independent metasurfaces is proposed. A nonlinear fitting scenarios is employed to precisely predict reflective phase response of the metasurface. To obtain the optimal performance, nonlinear fitting scheme and genetic algorithm are combined. Since low-Q-factor resonant able to introduce wideband and smooth phase response, combining with lossless substrate, the metasurface with high reflective amplitude and wideband corresponding phase response can be obtained. As verify, two types metasurface examples characterized of coding metasurface on RCS reduction and reflective focusing lens are demonstrated.

Abstract:Polarization multiplexing of metasurfaces conventionally requires the synthesis of both geometric and dynamic phases of meta-atoms. We propose a dynamic-phase-only polarization-multiplexing metasurface that consists of three types of polarization-decoupled meta-atoms and covers the 0–2π phase range. As illustrative examples, we designed and investigated a polarized beam splitter that can independently deflect x- and y-polarized incident lights at arbitrary angles. Furthermore, we designed and studied polarization-multiplexing metasurface-holography embracing double channels of orthogonal polarizations. Both metadevices demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. This study paves the way for the design of polarization-multiplexing electromagnetic structures for application in metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Abstract:Quasi-bound states in the continuum provide an effective and observable way to improve metasurface performance, usually with an ultra-high-quality factor. Dielectric metasurfaces dependent on Mie resonances have the characteristic of significantly low loss, and the polarization can be affected by the parameter tuning of the structure. Based on the theory of quasi-bound states in the continuum, we propose and simulate a bifunctional resonant metasurface, whose periodic unit structure consists of four antiparallel and symmetrical amorphous silicon columns embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) layer. The metasurface can exhibit an extreme Huygens' regime in the case of an incident plane wave with linear polarization, while exhibiting chirality in the case of incident circular polarized light. Our structure provides ideas for promoting the multifunctional development of flat optical devices, as well as presenting potential in polarization-dependent fields.

Abstract:A single transmission‐type metasurface operating in the terahertz (THz) band is demonstrated. So, pencil‐like beams with inhomogeneous polarization profiles can be imparted along the propagation direction. The introduction of a latitudinal polarization control factor representing the initial phase difference enables near‐even manipulation of the evolutionary trend of the longitudinal inhomogeneous polarization state. Polarization plays a key role in fundamental science, and manipulating the evolutionary trends of longitudinal polarization states can provide new implements for light–matter interaction. However, existing 3D optical devices can only manipulate the polarization conversion in a single transverse plane. Recently, methods to control polarization by cascading bulky optical systems are miniaturized using metasurfaces. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging to generate focused beams with vectorial properties for metasurfaces carrying inhomogeneous polarization profiles. Here, a single‐layer all‐silicon metasurface operating in the terahertz (THz) band is demonstrated to address all those aforementioned challenges in one go, and pencil‐like beams with inhomogeneous polarization profiles can be imparted along the propagation direction. The introduction of a latitudinal polarization control factor representing the initial phase difference enables near‐even manipulation of the evolutionary trend of the longitudinal polarization state according to the extended focal depth. By manipulating the topological charges within two orthogonal circularly polarized channels to accomplish coherent superposition, a focused vortex beam with vectorial properties can be generated in desired planes. Two functional demonstrations based on this approach are established experimentally, offering promising opportunities for structured light on meta‐optics.
