Abstract:We demonstrate sub-100-fs Kerr-lens mode-locking of a Tm:MgWO4 laser emitting at similar to 2 mu m assisted by a single-walled carbon-nanotube saturable absorber. A maximum average output power of 100 mW is achieved with pulse duration of 89 fs at a pulse repetition rate of similar to 86 MHz. The shortest pulse duration derived from frequency-resolved optical gating amounts to 76 fs at 2037 nm, corresponding to nearly bandwidth-limited pulses. To the best of our knowledge, these are the shortest pulses generated from any Tm-doped tungstate crystal and the first report on saturable absorber assisted Kerr-lens mode-locking of a Tm laser at similar to 2 mu m. Abstract:We report on a continuous wave (CW) and Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Tm3+:YScO3 single-crystal laser centered at 2.1 µm. Efficient CW laser operation with a maximum slope efficiency of 51% was achieved under in-band pumping by an Er:Yb fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA). In KLM operation, pulses as short as 49 fs corresponding to seven optical cycles were achieved at a repetition rate of 96.7 MHz with an average output power of 126 mW. Such short pulse durations are enabled by the inhomogeneously broadened emission spectrum of Tm3+:YScO3 extending to above 2200 nm.

Abstract:Kerr-lens mode-locked solid-state laser operation at ∼2µm is investigated. Using a Tm3+-doped (Lu,Sc)2O3 "mixed" sesquioxide ceramic as a gain medium, pulses as short as 58 fs are generated at ∼2081nm via soft-aperture Kerr-lens mode locking. The average output power amounts to 220 mW at a pulse repetition rate of 84.8 MHz. The emitted spectrum at the long-wavelength wing extends to >2.2µm which is attributed to vibronic transitions of the Tm3+ ions. The latter is found to be essential for generating pulses with durations in the 50 fs range.

Abstract:We report on an in-band pumped soft-aperture Kerr-lens mode-locked Ho:CALGO bulk laser at 2.1 um, generating 2 W of average power with 112 fs pulses at 91-MHz repetition rate. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power from a 100-fs class mode-locked laser based on a Tm3+ or Ho3+ doped bulk material. We show that the laser has excellent noise properties with an integrated relative intensity noise of 0.02% and a timing jitter of 950 fs (RMS phase noise 0.543 mrad) in the integration interval from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. The demonstrated combination of high average power, short pulses, and low-noise make this an outstanding laser source for spectroscopy and many other applications at 2.1 um.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode-locked Tm3+:Sc2O3 single-crystal laser in-band pumped by an Er3+:Yb3+ fiber master oscillator power amplifier at 1611 nm. Pulses as short as 166 fs with an average output power of 440 mW are obtained. The spectral bandwidth and center wavelength are 29.3 and 2124 nm, respectively. At a longer pulse duration of 298 fs, we obtain 1 W of average output power. The repetition rate is 95 MHz, and the conversion efficiency against the absorbed pump power is as high as 47%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Kerr-lens mode-locked Tm3+-doped solid state laser.

Abstract:We investigate in-band pumping of a Tm,Ho,Lu:CaGdAlO4 laser using a Raman-shifted Er-fiber laser (1678 nm), in the continuous-wave (CW) and mode-locked (ML) regimes. A maximum output power of 524 mW is obtained in the CW regime with a 5% output coupler at an absorbed pump power of 2.04 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 27.9%. A maximum CW wavelength tuning range of 160 nm at the zero level, from 1984 to 2144 nm, is obtained with a 0.2% output coupler. In the ML regime, pumping with 5.5 W (unpolarized), the average output power (0.2% output coupler) reaches 148 mW at a repetition rate of ~96 MHz. The output spectrum is centered at 2071.5 nm with a FWHM of 21.5 nm (σ-polarization). The pulse duration amounts to 218 fs (time-bandwidth product equal to 0.327).

Abstract:Continuous-wave mode-locked femtosecond 2 um solid-state laser with a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO4 as gain medium was experimentally demonstrated. The mode locked laser generated stable pulses with average output power as high as 531 mW, pulse duration of 496 fs, and repetition rate of 97 MHz at 1975 nm. The research results show that Tm:CaYAlO4 is an excellent gain medium for femtosecond pulse generation at 2um wavelength.

Abstract:We report on sub-50 fs pulse generation from a passively mode-locked (ML) Tm,Ho-codoped crystalline laser operating in a 2 mu m spectral region. A Tm, Ho:Ca(Gd, Lu)AlO4 laser delivers pulses as short as 46 fs at 2033 nm with an average power of 121 mW at a pulse repetition rate of similar to 78 MHz employing a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as a saturable absorber. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulses ever generated from a Tm- and/or Ho-based solid-state laser. Polarization switching in the anisotropic gain material is observed in the ML regime without any polarization selection elements which is essential for the shortest pulses. Abstract:We report on the first, to the best of our knowledge, Kerr-lens mode-locked laser based on an Yb3+-doped perovskite-type orthoaluminate crystal exploiting two different principal light polarizations. The Yb:(Y,Gd)AlO3 laser delivers soliton pulses as short as 32 fs at 1067 nm with an average output power of 328 mW and a pulse repetition rate of ∼84.6 MHz for E || a polarization. For the orthogonal E || b polarization, 33-fs pulses are generated at 1057 nm with an average output power of 305 mW. Power scaling to a maximum average output power reaching 2.07 W is achieved at the expense of longer pulse duration (72 fs for E || b), corresponding to an optical efficiency of 43.9% and a peak power of 303 kW.

Abstract:We report on the first sub-100 fs mode-locked laser operation of a Tm(3+)doped disordered calcium lithium tantalum gallium garnet (Tm:CLTGG) crystal. Soliton mode-locking was initiated and stabilized by a transmission-type single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber. Pulses as short as 69 fs were achieved at a central wavelength of 2010.4 nm with an average power of 28 mW at a pulse repetition rate of similar to 87.7 MHz. Abstract:We report on a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAlO3 laser generating soliton pulses as short as 24 fs at 1085 nm with an average output power of 186 mW and a pulse repetition rate of 87.5 MHz, representing the shortest pulses ever achieved from any mode-locked laser based on Yb3+-doped structurally ordered crystal. Optimized for power-scalable operation, the Yb:YAlO3 laser delivers 1.9 W at 1060 nm at the expense of a longer pulse duration of 44 fs, corresponding to a peak power of 462 kW and an optical efficiency of 43.2%.
