Abstract:High light yield, low detection limit, large X-ray attenuation efficiency and nontoxic composition are critical features of scintillators for ionizing radiation detection. We herein demonstrated a new layered organic–inorganic hybrid cuprous iodide single crystal (C 6 H 10 N 2 ) 2 Cu 2 I 3 (PO 2 ) 3 (C 6 H 10 N 2 2+ = 1,4-phenylenediaminium) for X-ray detection and imaging. Upon UV light excitation, (C 6 H 10 N 2 ) 2 Cu 2 I 3 (PO 2 ) 3 displays highly efficient yellow light emission with one dominant peak located at 578 nm, a large Stokes shift of 160 nm, and a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 96.4%. This crystal could also exhibit radioluminescence with a high scintillation light yield of 32 000 photons MeV −1 . A detection limit of ∼39 nGy air s −1 is determined, which is far lower than the required value of 5.5 μGy air s −1 for regular medical diagnostics. Moreover, the (C 6 H 10 N 2 ) 2 Cu 2 I 3 (PO 2 ) 3 -based scintillation screen exhibits high-performance for X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of 11.14 lp mm −1 , indicating the great potential in X-ray radiography. In brief, combined merits of low toxicity and cost, negligible self-absorption, a low detection limit, a high light yield and a spatial resolution make (C 6 H 10 N 2 ) 2 Cu 2 I 3 (PO 2 ) 3 an excellent candidate for X-ray scintillation.

Abstract:Commercially available rare-earth-doped inorganic oxide materials have been widely applied as X-ray scintillators, but the fragile characteristics, high detection limit, and harsh preparation condition seriously restrict their wide applications. Furthermore, it remains a huge challenge to realize X-ray flexible imaging technology for real-time monitoring of the curving interface of complex devices. To address these issues, we herein report two isostructural cuprous halides of zero-dimensional (0D) [AEPipz]CuX3·X·H2O (AEPipz = N-aminoethylpiperazine, X = Br and I) with controllable size to nanosize crystal as highly efficient scintillators toward flexible X-ray imaging. These cuprous halides exhibit highly efficient cyan photoluminescence and radioluminescence emissions with the highest quantum yield of 92.1% and light yield of 62,400 photons MeV-1, respectively, surpassing most of the commercially available inorganic scintillators. Meanwhile, the ultralow detection limit of 95.7 nGyair s-1 was far below the X-ray dose required for diagnosis (5.5 μGyair s-1). More significantly, the flexible film is facilely assembled with excellent foldability and high crack resistance, which further acts as a scintillation screen achieving a high spatial resolution of 17.4 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging, demonstrating the potential application in wearable radiation radiography. The combined advantages of high light yield, low detection limit, and excellent flexibility promote these 0D cuprous halides as the most promising X-ray scintillators.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional (0D) cuprous organic–inorganic hybrid halides have emerged as a new kind of scintillator due to their high light yield and adjustable emission properties in the whole visible spectral range. However, their practical application in the radiation industry is seriously hindered by the instability of Cu I ions under humid atmospheres and oxidizing environments. Herein, we designed a new Cu( I )-based halide of [CEOMTPP] 2 Cu 4 Br 6 (CEOMTPP = ethoxycarbonylmethyl(triphenyl) phosphonium cation) containing a discrete [Cu 4 Br 6 ] 2− nanocluster, which displays strong broadband yellow light emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and large Stokes shift of 206 nm. Remarkably, [CEOMTPP] 2 Cu 4 Br 6 shows ultra-high anti-water and anti-oxidation stability with steady emitting performance in water for over one year and in an acid–base aqueous solution for one day. Benefiting from the near-unity PLQY, large Stokes shift and negligible self-absorption, [CEOMTPP] 2 Cu 4 Br 6 exhibits excellent scintillation properties with a high light yield of 69 500 phonon per meV and low detection limit of 113.0 n Gy s −1 . Furthermore, a high spatial resolution of 14.5 lp mm −1 is achieved in X-ray imaging based on a [CEOMTPP] 2 Cu 4 Br 6 @EVA composite-assembled scintillation screen, demonstrating its potential application in medical photography. This research provides a fundamental structural engineering strategy to design highly efficient and stable low-dimensional Cu( I ) halides for X-ray radiation application.

Abstract:Scintillators are essential for high-energy radiation detection in a variety of potential applications. However, due to complex fabrication processes and nanocrystal homogeneity, conventional scintillators are challenging to meet the need for cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and flexible X-ray detection. Here, monodisperse nanocrystals (NCs) with small grain size and colloidal stability are obtained by adjusting the doping concentration of Zn2+ ions and controlling the morphology uniformity of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for the optimal doping concentration is as high as 92.8%, which is a 28.5% improvement compared to nondoped NCs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Zn2+ dopant inclines to occupy Cu sites and the I-rich condition suppresses the formation of I vacancy, enriching the excited electron density at the band-edge to enhance the self-trapped exciton emission. Moreover, high luminescence performance and flexible X-ray scintillator films are prepared using Zn2+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 NCs, with a spatial resolution of up to 15.7 lp mm(-1). This work provides an effective strategy for the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and efficient blue-emitting 0D all-inorganic metal halides, as well as shows their great potential for high-performance flexible lead-free and low-toxicity X-ray detector applications.
Highly Luminescent Zero-Dimensional Organic Copper Halides for X-ray Scintillation.

Abstract:The present work reports highly efficient flexible and reabsorption-free scintillators based on two zero-dimensional (0D) organic copper halides (TBA)CuX2 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium cation; X = Cl, Br). The (TBA)CuX2 exhibit highly luminescent green and sky-blue emissions peaked at 510 and 498 nm, with large Stokes shifts of 224 and 209 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 92.8% and 80.5% at room temperature for (TBA)CuCl2 and (TBA)CuBr2 single crystals (SCs), respectively. Interestingly, above room temperature, their PLQYs increase with temperature and reach near unity at 320 and 345 K for (TBA)CuCl2 and (TBA)CuBr2, respectively. The excellent properties originate from self-trapped excitons (STEs) in individual [CuX2]- quantum rods, which is demonstrated by the temperature-dependent PL, ultrafast transient absorption (TA) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The (TBA)CuX2 scintillators show bright radioluminescence (RL), impressive linear response to dose rate in a broad range, and high light yields. Their potential application in X-ray imaging is demonstrated by using (TBA)CuX2 composite scintillation screens. Importantly, flexible scintillators are demonstrated to be superior than flat ones for imaging nonplanar objects by conformally coating, which produce accurate images with negligible distortion.
Exciton-harvesting enabled efficient charged particle detection in zero-dimensional halides

Abstract:Materials for radiation detection are critically important and urgently demanded in diverse fields, starting from fundamental scientific research to medical diagnostics, homeland security, and environmental monitoring. Low-dimensional halides (LDHs) exhibiting efficient self-trapped exciton (STE) emission with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) have recently shown a great potential as scintillators. However, an overlooked issue of exciton-exciton interaction in LDHs under ionizing radiation hinders the broadening of its radiation detection applications. Here, we demonstrate an exceptional enhancement of exciton-harvesting efficiency in zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3Cu2I5:Tl halide single crystals by forming strongly localized Tl-bound excitons. Because of the suppression of non-radiative exciton-exciton interaction, an excellent α/β pulse-shape-discrimination (PSD) figure-of-merit (FoM) factor of 2.64, a superior rejection ratio of 10-9, and a high scintillation yield of 26 000 photons MeV-1 under 5.49 MeV α-ray are achieved in Cs3Cu2I5:Tl single crystals, outperforming the commercial ZnS:Ag/PVT composites for charged particle detection applications. Furthermore, a radiation detector prototype based on Cs3Cu2I5:Tl single crystal demonstrates the capability of identifying radioactive 220Rn gas for environmental radiation monitoring applications. We believe that the exciton-harvesting strategy proposed here can greatly boost the applications of LDHs materials.
Highly Resolved X‐Ray Imaging Enabled by In(I) Doped Perovskite‐Like Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 Single Crystal Scintillator

Abstract:A remarkable X‐ray imaging resolution of 18 line pairs mm−1 is demonstrated by using bright and sensitive zero‐dimensional Cs3Cu2I5:In+ single‐crystal scintillators, which is so far a record resolution for single‐crystal perovskite scintillator‐based flat‐panel detectors. The result highlights the importance of efficient harvesting of carriers (and excitons) in low‐dimensional perovskites for efficient radiation detection applications.Low‐dimensional perovskite halides have shown a great potential as X‐ray detection materials because of efficient exciton emissions originating from strongly spatially localized charge carriers. Nonetheless, most of them have a scintillation yield far below their theoretical limits. Here, it is found that the harvesting efficiency of produced charge carriers can be significantly enhanced via a small amount of In+ doping in these highly localized structures. A bright and sensitive zero‐dimensional Cs3Cu2I5:In+ halide with efficient and tunable dual emission is reported. The radioluminescence emission of Cs3Cu2I5:In+ crystals under X‐ray excitation consists of a self‐trapped exciton emission at 460 nm and an In+‐related emission at 620 nm at room temperature. In+ doping enhances the photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) of Cs3Cu2I5 from 68.1% to 88.4%. Benefiting from the higher PLQY, Cs3Cu2I5:In+ can achieve an excellent X‐ray detection limit of 96.2 nGyair s−1, and a superior scintillation yield of 53 000 photons per MeV, which is comparable to commercial CsI:Tl single crystals. As a result, a remarkable X‐ray imaging resolution of 18 line pairs mm–1 is demonstrated, which is so far a record resolution for single crystal perovskite‐based flat‐panel detectors. These results highlight the importance of efficient harvesting of carriers (and excitons) in low‐dimensional perovskites for radiation detection applications.

Abstract:A new one-dimensional hybrid [APCHA]Cu 2 I 4 was designed and applied as an X-ray scintillator. It exhibits broad-band green emission with a high PLQY of 74.80% and excellent stability. It demonstrates radioluminescence property with a light yield of 28 336 photons MeV −1 , detection limit of 41 nGy air s −1 , and high spatial limit of 13.95 lp mm −1 in X-ray imaging.

Abstract:A novel copper halide scintillator with a unique ultra‐broad emission band demonstrates universal compatibility with the peak response range of commercial photodetector. A prototype X‐ray imager based on this copper halide scintillator is constructed for inspecting the internal structures of biological and electronic devices with a high resolution of 5.5 lp mm−1 at modulation transfer function = 0.2. Lead‐free metal‐halide scintillators are gaining considerable attention as more eco‐friendly and superior alternatives to their lead‐based counterparts. However, novel broad‐emission band scintillators like the state‐of‐the‐art CsI: Tl scintillator, which can generate high signals due to its strong compatibility with the spectral responsivity of regular photodiode arrays, are still less investigated. Herein, a TPA2Cu2I4 (TPACI) copper halide scintillator with a unique ultra‐broad emission (FWHM > 240 nm) is developed, which shows universal compatibility with the peak response range of commercial photodetector. The optical properties characterization and mechanism analysis indicates that this ultra‐broad spectrum can be attributed to the dual self‐trapped exciton (STE) emission consisting of two emission bands. Benefiting from the large Stokes shift and ultra‐broad emission band enabled by the dual STE, the self‐absorption‐free TPACI scintillator exhibits efficient white light emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yields of 94.27%, a high light yield of ≈40124 photons MeV−1. Moreover, a prototype of a TPACI scintillator‐based X‐ray imager is assembled for inspecting the internal structures of biological and electronic devices, which demonstrated a high resolution of 5.5 lp mm−1 at modulation transfer function = 0.2. These findings provide insights into the design of efficient, broad‐emission scintillators for high‐resolution X‐ray imaging.

Lead-Free Zero-Dimensional Organic-Copper(I) Halides as Stable and Sensitive X-ray Scintillators

Abstract:Low-dimensional organic–metal halides are regarded as an emerging class of X-ray scintillation materials, but most of the discovered compounds are confronted with challenges of toxicity and instability. To address these challenges, we herein report two lead-free zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid halides, (Bmpip)2Cu2Br4 and PPh4CuBr2 single crystals, grown by the low-cost solution-processing method. By single-crystal X-ray diffraction refinement, the crystal structures of (Bmpip)2Cu2Br4 and PPh4CuBr2 were determined to be orthorhombic and monoclinic crystal systems, respectively. (Bmpip)2Cu2Br4 and PPh4CuBr2 show broadband orange and yellow emissions peaking at 620 and 538 nm, respectively. Different from the emission nature of the recent reported Cu-based halide hybrids, both (Bmpip)2Cu2Br4 and PPh4CuBr2 emit from excitons bound to defects featuring spin-allowed transition, enabling them to possess fast scintillation decay time of tens of nanoseconds, respectively. In particular, the (Bmpip)2Cu2Br4 single crystal has a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 48.2%, a high scintillation yield of 16,000 photons/MeV, and a low detection limit of 710 nGyair/s. Cs3Cu2I5 Single Crystal for Efficient Direct X‐Ray Detection

Abstract:High‐quality pure and Li‐doped Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals are grown by the Bridgman method, and a direct X‐ray detector is fabricated with vertical device configuration of Au/Cs3Cu2I5 single crystal/PCBM/Au. The Li+ dopant enhances the photoelectric properties of the Cs3Cu2I5 single crystal by increasing the mobility‐lifetime (μτ) product from 1.4 × 10−4 to 2.9 × 10−4 cm2V–1. The sensitive direct X‐ray detector exhibits a high sensitivity of 831.1 μC Gyair−1 cm−2 and low detection limit of 34.8 nGyair s−1 with negligible baseline current drift and excellent stability. Low‐dimensional copper‐based halide single crystals are considered excellent scintillators for indirect X‐ray detection, but their potential in direct X‐ray detection has not been investigated. Herein, high‐quality pure Cs3Cu2I5 and Li‐doped Cs3Cu2I5:Li single crystals are grown by the Bridgman method. The Li+ dopant enhances the photoelectric properties of the Cs3Cu2I5 single crystal by extending the carrier lifetime, improving the carrier mobility from 6.49 to 9.52 cm2 V−1 s−1, and increasing the mobility‐lifetime (μτ) product from 1.4 × 10−4 to 2.9 × 10−4 cm2 V−1. The sensitive direct X‐ray detector with a vertical device configuration of Au/Cs3Cu2I5:Li single crystal/PCBM/Au is fabricated and demonstrated to have a high sensitivity of 831.1 μC Gyair−1 cm−2 and low detection limit of 34.8 nGyair s−1. Furthermore, the detector shows negligible baseline current drift and excellent stability upon X‐ray radiation.

Abstract:Copper-based halides have emerged as promising scintillator materials for X-ray imaging due to their favorable photophysical characteristics, such as negligible self-absorption, high light output, and fast decay. Among these materials, Cs3Cu2I5, a blue emitter, currently delivers the highest scintillation light output under steady-state X-rays. However, there is a significant spectral mismatch between its emission band and the spectral responsivity of regular flat-panel photodiode arrays. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the physical properties of the CsCu2I3 scintillator is conducted, and its perfect spectral compatibility is discovered, which results in a higher photodiode signal despite its relatively lower light output compared to typical Cs3Cu2I5 scintillators. Furthermore, CsCu2I3 exhibits faster light decay properties, making it especially suitable for Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray imaging. High-quality X-ray cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging is successfully demonstrated using the fast-decaying CsCu2I3 scintillator screen. Additionally, the flexibility of the scintillator allows for non-planar imaging, showcasing advantages not available with traditional rigid scintillators. These results not only highlight the significant promise of the CsCu2I3 scintillator but also emphasize the necessity of considering spectral compatibility when designing novel scintillator materials.
High-Efficiency ZnS: Cu + , Al 3+ Scintillator for X-ray Detection in a Non-Darkroom Environment

Abstract:An all-inorganic lead-free halides Cs-Cu-I system, represented by Cs3Cu2I5 and CsCu2I3, has attracted attention for their good photophysical characteristics recently. Successive works had reported their application potential in light-emitting devices. However, there is no report for CsCu2I3 in X-ray scintillation detectors so far. We notice that CsCu2I3 may be advantageous in such an application due to the one-dimensional crystal structure, the congruent-melting feature, and the high spectral matching to some photosensors. In this work, we explore the scintillation properties and imaging application of CsCu2I3 in X-ray scintillator detector. The oriented structure is designed to enhance the imaging performance of a CsCu2I3 detector. Close-space sublimation process and nanoscale seed screening strategy are employed to realize this design by producing a large-area (25 cm2) CsCu2I3 thick film layer with the oriented nanorod structure. This CsCu2I3 detector eventually achieves a high spatial resolution of 7.5 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging.

Abstract:A series of novel thermally activated delayed fluorescent X‐ray scintillators based on mononuclear Cu(I) halide complexes are successfully developed. Together with high X‐ray absorption coefficient of heavy halogen elements and the harvesting of both singlet and triplet excitons, these scintillators and their flexible scintillation film display excellent scintillation performance and high‐resolution X‐ray imaging (9.8 lp/mm). Scintillators have attracted tremendous attention due to their great potential in radiation detection, industrial non‐destructive testing, and medical theranostic applications. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based scintillators can simultaneously harvest radiation‐induced singlet and triplet excitons for high‐efficient X‐ray excited luminescence. However, pure organic TADF materials composed of light elements exhibit low X‐ray absorption coefficients, resulting in relatively weak X‐ray excited luminescence. Herein, a series of novel high‐performance X‐ray scintillators based on TADF mononuclear Cu(I)‐halide complexes are successfully developed. Together with high X‐ray absorption coefficient of heavy halogen elements and halide‐to‐ligand charge transfer characteristics, these TADF scintillators display excellent performance with high X‐ray relative light yields (as high as 28385 ± 1335 photons MeV−1), good linear response to X‐ray dose rate and high resistance to humidity and radiation. X‐ray imaging tests show that a relatively high spatial resolution of 9.8 lp/mm is realized based on their flexible scintillator films. These features suggest that it is a promising strategy to realize strong X‐ray excited luminescence by incorporating heavy halogen elements in TADF materials, providing more possibilities for exploring new low‐cost and high‐performance scintillators.
