Abstract:Radiation exposure is highly concerned for X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning. There are mainly two strategies to reduce the radiation dose: lowering tube current/voltage (low-dose CT, LDCT), and reducing (incomplete) data acquisition. In practice, they may be applied separately or jointly which leads to individual and coupled ill-posed problems, respectively. In this paper, we aim to investigate deep learning reconstruction of individual and coupled reduced-dose CT. For the individual problem, we explored the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) on LDCT reconstruction in three different domains (sinogram / filtered / image domains). For the reconstruction of LDCT coupled with interior tomography, we explored the performance of image-domain CNN and proposed convolution denoising and elliptical extrapolation to decouple noise and cupping artifacts. Our experiments show that CNNs (specifically U-Net) trained in different domains behave differently. Sinogram-domain and filtered-domain CNNs are more capable of producing identifiable structures and results by image-domain CNN are smoother with some distorted structures. The results also confirm that decoupling techniques have great potential in improving the reconstruction of coupled reduced-dose CT.
