Abstract:Nitrogen-functionalized microporous carbon nanoparticles (N-MCNs) are prepared by direct carbonization of a novel polymer obtained from the Schiff base reaction of terephthalaldehyde and m-phenylenediamine. The carbonization temperature plays a crucial role in the porosity, surface chemistry and capacitive performance for the carbons. N-MCN850 sample shows a much larger specific surface area of 1938m2g−1, a higher specific capacitance of 397Fg−1 and 145Fg−1 at the current density of 0.1 and 100Ag−1 in 6M KOH aqueous electrolyte, respectively. The results indicate its outstanding capacitive behavior and ultrahigh-rate performance. In addition, the electrode shows excellent cycling stability along with 98% of the initial specific capacitance after 5000 charge/discharge cycles.
Sprinkling MnFe2O4 Quantum Dots on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Sheets: the Formation Mechanism and Application for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.
Nitrogen-doped Graphene/multiphase Nickel Sulfides Obtained by NiC3N3S3 (metallopolymer) Assisted Synthesis for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:Designing a hybrid architecture of electroactive species on the modified graphene sheets is one of the most promising tactics for high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, multiphase nickel sulfides nano-particles (Ni3S2-NiS, abbreviated as Ni-S-1) with abundant edge sites were synthesized by pyrolysis of three-dimensional porous Ni-C3N3S3 complexes, and then the N-doped graphene (NG)/Ni-S-1 hybrid was obtained by an introduction of graphene oxide. The NG/Ni-S-1 hybrid shows the electroactive species-on-sheet architectures and the heteroatom nitrogen doping into graphene. The unique structural composition of the NG/Ni-S-1 hybrid can accelerate the permeation and shorten the diffusion length of electrolyte ions, to perform favorable electrochemical charge storage kinetics. Remarkably, compared with Ni-S-1 electrode, the NG/Ni-S-1 hybrid electrode delivers an improved specific capacity of 732.1 C g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and an excellent rate capability, which are attributed to more accessible surfaces and enhanced electron-transport capacity due to the integration of NG matrix. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor assembled using the NG/Ni-S-1 hybrid as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode demonstrates a high energy density of 40.2 Wh kg(-1), high power density of 7.4 kW kg(-1), and relatively good electrochemical stability. Abstract:Graphene‐based supercapacitors have been attracting growing attention due to the predicted intrinsic high surface area, high electron mobility, and many other excellent properties of pristine graphene. However, experimentally, the state‐of‐the‐art graphene electrodes face limitations such as low surface area, low electrical conductivity, and low capacitance, which greatly limit their electrochemical performances for supercapacitor applications. To tackle these issues, hybridizing graphene with other species (e.g., atom, cluster, nanostructure, etc.) to enlarge the surface area, enhance the electrical conductivity, and improve capacitance behaviors are strongly desired. In this review, different hybridization principles (spacers hybridization, conductors hybridization, heteroatoms doping, and pseudocapacitance hybridization) are discussed to provide fundamental guidance for hybridization approaches to solve these challenges. Recent progress in hybridized graphene for supercapacitors guided by the above principles are thereafter summarized, pushing the performance of hybridized graphene electrodes beyond the limitation of pure graphene materials. In addition, the current challenges of energy storage using hybridized graphene and their future directions are discussed.

Tuning Nitrogen Species in Two‐Dimensional Carbon through Pore Structure Change for High Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials have long been a key component of supercapacitor energy storage systems, and exploring nitrogen atom doping and its role is currently the focus of carbon‐based electrode development. However, achieving a high proportion of pyridinic‐N (active N) in N doped carbon is still a big challenge. Here, by introducing a triblock copolymer F127 into the phenolic resin, the pore structure of the two‐dimensional carbon material is successfully adjusted, thereby increasing the probability of generation of active nitrogen. We found that this two‐dimensional porous structure is beneficial to the formation of pyridine‐N. Through the change of pore structure, the ratio of pyridine‐N to the total N was further increased by 13.9%. Therefore, it provides a large specific capacitance (220 F g−1), excellent cycle stability (93.6%) and high rate performance (71.2%) in the alkaline KOH electrolyte. To further increase the energy density, we constructed an symmetrical supercapacitor device using an ionic liquid electrolyte (equal amount of 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and acetonitrile). As a result, since the electrolyte has a voltage window of up to 3V, the energy density is as high as 37.5 Wh kg‒1. This superior performance indicates that adjusting the ratio of pyridine‐N provides a promising method for preparing excellent N‐doped carbon materials for energy storage systems.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped graphene is of great interest for energy storage applications due to its improved local electronic structures compared with undoped graphene. However, a tunable method for the preparation of heteroatom-doped graphene with a special microstructure is still worth developing. Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped graphene with different microstructures is facilely synthesized via an in situ interlamination self-assembling method that employs the in situ formed Fe3(PO4)2 and organoamine as the catalyst and carbon source, respectively. By tuning the alkyl chain length in organoamine, octylamine and dodecylamine, bubble-like and sheet-like nitrogen-doped graphene are obtained, respectively. In three-electrode supercapacitor tests, besides the double-layer capacitance, the as-prepared graphene electrode material indeed exhibits pseudocapacitance due to the N-rich feature, delivering a good rate capability (166 F g–1 at 20 A g–1) and cyclic performance (96% capacitance retention over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g–1). More importantly, the symmetrical supercapacitor studies reveal the promising practicality due to the achieved excellent energy and power densities together with long-term cyclability. Thereby, this work establishes a new milestone for the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped graphene with a desired microstructure for energy storage and other applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene hollow spheres (NGHS) have been prepared by a simple layer-by-layer assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and polyaniline (PANI) on polystyrene (PS) nanospheres, followed by calcination to remove the PS template and realize the carbonization of PANI. The resultant NGHS has a high nitrogen content of 8.7 atom%, in which various nitrogen species, such as pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, and quaternary-N, are detected. The hollow nanostructure of NGHS can provide high electroactive regions, while the effective nitrogen-doping of graphene can increase electron mobility and space charge capacitance. The specific capacitance of NGHS with four bilayers (NGHS-4bi) can reach 381 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The greatly enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the hollow nanostructure and nitrogen-doping, suggesting that NGHS as novel electrode materials may have potential applications in high performance energy storage devices. Abstract:An N-superdoped 3D graphene network structure with an N-doping level up to 15.8 at% for high-performance supercapacitor is designed and synthesized, in which the graphene foam with high conductivity acts as skeleton and nested with N-superdoped reduced graphene oxide arogels. This material shows a highly conductive interconnected 3D porous structure (3.33 S cm(-1)), large surface area (583 m(2) g(-1)), low internal resistance (0.4 Omega ), good wettability, and a great number of active sites. Because of the multiple synergistic effects of these features, the supercapacitors based on this material show a remarkably excellent electrochemical behavior with a high specific capacitance (of up to 380, 332, and 245 F g(-1) in alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes measured in three-electrode configuration, respectively, 297 F g(-1) in alkaline electrolytes measured in two-electrode configuration), good rate capability, excellent cycling stability (93.5% retention after 4600 cycles), and low internal resistance (0.4 Omega), resulting in high power density with proper high energy density.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have attracted intensive attention owing to their permanent nanoporosity, large surface area and possibility for functionalization, however their application in energy storage suffers from poor conductivity and low hetero-atom content. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid of conjugated microporous polymers and graphene aerogel with improved conductivity. After treating at 800°C in NH3, the nitrogen content increases to 9.8%. The resulting microporous carbon exhibits a significant rise in supercapacitive performance up to 325 F g-1, 55% higher than pristine triazine-based CMPs, with energy density up to 12.95 Wh kg-1. Moreover, it has high stability with 99% retention after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g-1. The synergy of hierarchical porous structure, graphene-based conduction path and high percentage of hybridization with nitrogen ensures effective ion/electron transport and diffusion, making NH3-treated graphene aerogel/CMP hybrid a promising electrode material in high-performance supercapacitor.

Abstract:Electrochemical capacitors (best known as supercapacitors) are high‐performance energy storage devices featuring higher capacity than conventional capacitors and higher power densities than batteries, and are among the key enabling technologies of the clean energy future. This review focuses on performance enhancement of carbon‐based supercapacitors by doping other elements (heteroatoms) into the nanostructured carbon electrodes. The nanocarbon materials currently exist in all dimensionalities (from 0D quantum dots to 3D bulk materials) and show good stability and other properties in diverse electrode architectures. However, relatively low energy density and high manufacturing cost impede widespread commercial applications of nanocarbon‐based supercapacitors. Heteroatom doping into the carbon matrix is one of the most promising and versatile ways to enhance the device performance, yet the mechanisms of the doping effects still remain poorly understood. Here the effects of heteroatom doping by boron, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, fluorine, chlorine, silicon, and functionalizing with oxygen on the elemental composition, structure, property, and performance relationships of nanocarbon electrodes are critically examined. The limitations of doping approaches are further discussed and guidelines for reporting the performance of heteroatom doped nanocarbon electrode‐based electrochemical capacitors are proposed. The current challenges and promising future directions for clean energy applications are discussed as well.

A Novel Approach Of Binary Doping Sulfur And Nitrogen Into Graphene Layers For Enhancing Electrochemical Performances Of Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel route to prepare sulfur and nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide, in which, two main procedures - the preparation of a sulfur doped graphite intercalation compound (S-GIC) and the construction of the sulfur and nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide (SN-RGO) - are included. The loading of sulfur and nitrogen in SN-RGO, which is tracked by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is 1.47 and 3.90 at%, respectively. SN-RGO possesses an almost two times higher specific surface area (SSA) than RGO and a narrow pore size distribution. Electrochemical investigations demonstrate that SN-RGO exhibits an outstanding capacitive performance, its specific capacitance at the scan rate of 5 mV s (1) in a 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte being up to 402.4 F g (1), which is, to the best of our knowledge, among the highest values so far reported for S/N co-doped carbon materials. Furthermore, SN-RGO also exhibits an excellent cycling stability (almost 95% specific capacitance being retained even after 10 000 cycles). This work suggests that constructing doped graphene-based materials by using the intercalated substances among the graphite layers as the dopant sources can be considered as a promising strategy for the development of high performance electrodes for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nitrogen doping is usually adopted in carbon based supercapacitor to enhance its relatively low energy density by providing extra pseudocapacity. However, the improvement of energy density is normally limited because the content of the introduced nitrogen species is not high and meanwhile only part of them is electrochemically active. Herein, we designed and fabricated a class of hierarchical nitrogen-rich porous carbons (HNPCs) possessing not only very high nitrogen content (up to 21.7 atom%) but also fully electrochemically active nitrogen species (i.e., pyridinic N, pyrrolic N and oxidized N). Especially, in the synthesis of HNPCs, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was used in situ not only as a nitrogen source but also as a catalyst to facilitate the polymerization of phenol and formaldehyde (as carbon precursor) and as a template to create the hierarchical porous structure. As electrodes for aqueous symmetric supercapacitor, the HNPCs with full faradaic-active nitrogen functionalities exhibit excellent supercapacitor performance: high energy density of 36.8 Wh/kg at 2.0 kW/kg (maintaining 25.7 Wh/kg at 38 kW/kg), superior rate capability with 78% capacitance retention from 1.0 to 20 A/g and excellent cycling stability with over 95% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles, indicating their promising application potential in electrochemical energy storage. This novel carbon material with high-content and full electrochemically active nitrogen species may find extensive potential applications in the energy storage/conversion, catalysis, adsorption, and so on.

One-step chemical vapor deposition synthesis and supercapacitor performance of nitrogen-doped porous carbon–carbon nanotube hybrids

Abstract:Novel nitrogen-doped carbon hybrid materials consisting of multiwalled nanotubes and porous graphitic layers have been produced by chemical vapor deposition over magnesium-oxide-supported metal catalysts. CN x nanotubes were grown on Co/Mo, Ni/Mo, or Fe/Mo alloy nanoparticles, and MgO grains served as a template for the porous carbon. The simultaneous formation of morphologically different carbon structures was due to the slow activation of catalysts for the nanotube growth in a carbon-containing gas environment. An analysis of the obtained products by means of transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods revealed that the catalyst's composition influences the nanotube/porous carbon ratio and concentration of incorporated nitrogen. The hybrid materials were tested as electrodes in a 1M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte and the best performance was found for a nitrogen-enriched material produced using the Fe/Mo catalyst. From the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data, it was concluded that the nitrogen doping reduces the resistance at the carbon surface/electrolyte interface and the nanotubes permeating the porous carbon provide fast charge transport in the cell.

Abstract:Supercapacitors (also known as electrochemical capacitors) are considered to be the most promising devices to meet the urgent and pressing requirements of energy storage. Supercapacitive electrode materials, which are strongly related to the high-efficiency storage of energy, have provoked more attentions and interests. Heteroatom doping (nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, boron et.al) has been conceived as a promising approach to increase the special surface area, tune pore size distribution, and incorporate pseudo-capacitance. Recently, nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured carbon electrode materials have attracted immense interest due to their great potential merits, including enhance the electrical conductivity, surface polarity, wettability and electro-active surface area, provide an additional pseudo-capacitance and achieve high rate performance and good cycling stability. Herein, a simple, eco-friendly, novel, and effective way to fabricate N-doped carbon nanofiber networks (N-CNFs) is studied. The N-CNFs are successfully fabricated through in situ polymerization using pyrrole and ammonium persulfate as the monomer and oxidant, respectively, then followed by pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere. The fabricated electrode exhibits an excellent reversible specific capacitance of 233.5 F g-1 at the current density of 0.5 A g-1, and a high rate performance of 80.2 % retention at 5 A g−1 in 6.0 mol L-1 KOH electrolyte. The exceptional properties mostly stem from robust redox reactions of N-doping in the CNFs, which providing enhanced pseudo-capacitance. Furthermore, this kind of hybrid doped material could be easily scaled up and represents an alternative promising candidate for an efficient electrode material for supercapacitors.

Here, we developed an effective and facile strategy to prepare binder-free nitrogen-doped graphene hydrogel (NDGH) as the electrode material. Electrochemical performance of NDGH is measured in three different electrolytes (2 M KOH, 1 M Na2SO4 and 1 M H2SO4), and shows superior performance in 2 M KOH. NDGH has outstanding specific capacitance of 224.1 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, holding 80.7% of the capacitance at 10 A g-1. Meanwhile, NDGH possesses good cycling stability of 93% retention after 6000 cycles. The surface-controlled and diffusion-controlled contribution is analyzed of NDGH in different electrolytes. Comparing with 1 M Na2SO4 (52%) and 1 M H2SO4 (13%), superior surface-controlled contribution is observed in 2 M KOH (73%) electrolyte at 10 mV s-1. The symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) consisting of NDGH delivers an energy density of 14.3 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 582.8 W kg-1 in KOH electrolyte. These excellent electrochemical performances could benefit from the synergistic effect of multistage pore structure, nitrogen doping and binder-free hydrogel. Therefore, abundant electrochemical reaction can take place at the interface between electrode materials and electrolyte. This strategy may further broaden to prominently enhance the specific capacitance and rate performance of graphene oxide.

Abstract:Doping heteroatoms into graphene is effective to open the energy bandgap and increase the free carrier density, thereby improving its electronic and electrochemical properties. In this paper, CO was selected as the carbon source for the preparation of graphene through the self-propagating reaction. During the reaction, a variety of hexamethyltetramine were used to dope N atoms into the graphene when different ratios of MgO/Mg were compared. Microstructural and electrochemical characterizations were conducted to study the effects of nitrogen doping as well as MgO/Mg ratio on the performance of the graphene as supercapacitor electrode. The Raman spectra show the presence of graphene after self-propagating reaction. The graphene doped from hexamethyltetramine shows the existence of pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, and graphitic-N. In general, the percentages of pyridinic-N in the materials increased with the usage of hexamethyltetramine. Given the same condition, the pyridinic-N content of the samples based on MgO/Mg ratio of 8 was higher than that of the samples using MgO/Mg ratio of 4. Besides, the specific surface areas of the samples increase as MgO/Mg increased. The introduction of nitrogen atoms in the graphene increased the active sites on its surface and consequently, the specific capacity, capacity retention rate and energy density of the supercapacitor. Abstract:The hybrid ion capacitor (HIC) is a hybrid electrochemical energy storage device that combines the intercalation mechanism of a lithium-ion battery anode with the double-layer mechanism of the cathode. Thus, an HIC combines the high energy density of batteries and the high power density of supercapacitors, thus bridging the gap between batteries and supercapacitors. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials (graphite, graphene, carbon nanosheets) are promising candidates for hybrid capacitors owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, including their enormous specific surface areas, abundance of active sites (surface and functional groups), and large interlayer spacing. So far, there has been no review focusing on the 2D carbon-based materials for the emerging post-lithium hybrid capacitors. This concept review considers the role of 2D carbon in hybrid capacitors and the recent progress in the application of 2D carbon materials for post-Li (Na+, K+, Zn2+) hybrid capacitors. Moreover, their challenges and trends in their future development are discussed.

Carbon-coated Ni2P Nanoparticles Coated on CNTs Synthesized by an In-Situ Solid-State Method for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors and Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The pursuit of electrode materials with excellent performance in both supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries holds the potential to streamline the construction of hybrid electrochemical energy storage systems and contribute to cost reduction. In this paper, we introduce a novel nanocomposite-carbon-coated Ni2P nanoparticles coated on CNTs (CNTs@(Ni2P@C))-via an in-situ one-step solid-state method. This design not only prevents the aggregation of Ni2P nanoparticles with a size of 5-8 nm but also mitigates its volume change during charging and discharging cycles. Simultaneously, it establishes a rapid electron transfer pathway between CNTs and Ni2P nanoparticles, enhancing the electron transport kinetics within the synthesized nanocomposite. The synthesized CNTs@(Ni2P@C) nanocomposite exhibits high performance in both SCs and LIBs. An ultra-high specific capacity of 378.5 mAh g-1 (2725.2 F g-1) at 1 A g-1 and a good rate capacity (189.3 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1) are achieved when used in supercapacitors. The hybrid supercapacitor device assembled using the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a high specific capacity of 84.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and excellent capacity retention of 92 % after 10,000 cycles. A high energy density of 67.47 Wh kg- 1 can be delivered at a power density of 0.84 kW kg- 1. When used in LIBs, the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a reliable reversible specific capacity of 329 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles and a high capacity retention of 90 % after 5000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1. The proposed in-situ solid-state method and the synthesized CNTs@(Ni2P@C) nanocomposite will strongly promote the development of difunctional electrode materials for supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries.
