Abstract:${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{4.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ with a perovskite-related structure, represented as ${\mathrm{AA}}_{3}^{\ensuremath{'}}{B}_{4}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition ${(T}_{\mathrm{SM}})$ at 210 K, orders ferromagnetically ${(T}_{C})$ at 340 K, and exhibits giant magnetoresistance (GMR). In contrast to the rare-earth manganate-based ${\mathrm{LnMnO}}_{3}$ perovskites, which exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) near ${T}_{\mathrm{SM}}\ensuremath{\sim}{T}_{C},$ for ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{4.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ the MR increases smoothly with decreasing temperature and the largest MR is not near the SM transition. X-ray-absorption spectra indicate that the formal oxidation states are consistent with ${(\mathrm{N}\mathrm{a}}_{0.5}^{+}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}^{2+}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}^{2+}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{0.5}^{3+}{)\mathrm{M}\mathrm{n}}_{4}^{4+}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}.$ Thus the double-exchange ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}{\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{O}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{n}}^{4+}$ magnetic interactions invoked as the mechanism of CMR in perovskite manganates cannot be important in this compound. The dramatic differences observed in the properties of ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{4.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ from those of the mixed-valent rare-earth manganates suggest a fundamentally different mechanism for the origin of the large MR. The magnetic coupling between ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{2+}{/\mathrm{M}\mathrm{n}}^{3+}$ ions on the $A$ site, ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}{/\mathrm{M}\mathrm{n}}^{4+}$ ions on the $B$ site and possible interactions between the $A$- and $B$-site magnetic ions are responsible for the observed differences in behavior of ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{4.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ from those of the CMR manganates with only one type of magnetic ion. ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{4.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ exhibits high sensitivity to $H$ at low fields, and good thermal stability of the MR. These properties are advantageous for magnetic storage applications.
