Abstract:Physically-based hydrological models are used to predict catchment water balance through detailed simulation of hydrological processes at small temporal and spatial scales. However, annual catchment water balance can also be easily and simply predicted using lumped conceptual model. Comparison between physically-based hydrological models and lumped conceptual models can help us understand the dominant factors on catchment water balance at different scales. In this paper, a distributed physically-based hydrological model (i.e., bottom-up approach) and a simple water-energy balance model (i.e., top-down approach) are used to predict actual evapotranspiration in nine sub-catchments, and the whole basin of the Luan River in northern China. Both simulations give very close values of annual evapotranspiration and show the same complementary relationship between actual and potential evapotranspiration at annual time scale. From the analysis at different time scales through comparison of the top-down and the bottom-up methods, it is shown that the annual catchment evapotranspiration is controlled mainly by annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, and the variability of soil water and vegetation becomes more important at a smaller time scale in the study areas. It is also known that the relationship between potential and actual evapotranspiration shows a highly nonlinear relationship at the annual and catchment scale but can be simplified to a linear relationship at hourly temporal and hillslope scales, which is commonly used in the physically-based hydrological models.
Variations and causal interactions in the eco-hydrological system of Yellow River basin, China: A Network Perspective

Abstract:The Yellow River basin (YRB), as a crucial ecological corridor in the northern part of China, has experienced profound changes in multiple eco-hydrological processes. However, there is still lack of a global view on the variations and causal interactions in the complex hydro-ecological system of YRB. In this study, a set of eco-hydrological variables, regarding water resources (surface water, soil water, groundwater) and ecological environment (vegetation growth, productivity, water use efficiency) are used to represent the main characteristics of the eco-hydrological system in different sub-regions of YRB. The objective of this study is three-fold. Firstly, the individual variation of each eco-hydrological variable was unraveled using trend analysis. Secondly, network analysis was used to analyze the synergistic variations among variables. Finally, an advanced causal discovery tool incorporating prior knowledge was used to investigate the potential causal interactions in eco-hydrological system. The results indicate the decrease of terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) in most parts of the YRB, which is mostly due to the substantial depletions in ground water. The vegetation growth and productivity have noticed prominent increasing trends in YRB, and such increase in the source region is largely due to the warmer climate condition and in the middle reaches is mainly because of the large-scale vegetation restoration. However, the ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) is not very optimistic, especially in the source region. The causal discovery method captures the inhibitory effect of evapotranspiration on WUE in the upper and some parts of the middle reaches of YRB. Our study provides a new perspective to recognize the complicated eco-hydrological conditions and their variations in YRB during 2001-2019, as well as the potential mechanisms driving these variations.  
Hydrological Simulation and Runoff Component Analysis over a Cold Mountainous River Basin in Southwest China

Abstract:Assessment of water resources from mountainous catchments is crucial for the development of upstream rural areas and downstream urban communities. However, lack of data in these mountainous catchments prevents full understanding of the response of hydrology or water resources to climate change. Meanwhile, hydrological modeling is challenging due to parameter uncertainty. In this work, one tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin (the upper stream of the Brahmaputra River) was used as a case study for hydrological modeling. Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM 3B42V7) data were utilized as a substitute for gauge-based rainfall data, and the capability of simulating precipitation, snow, and groundwater contributions to total runoff by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was investigated. The uncertainty in runoff proportions from precipitation, snowmelt, and groundwater was quantified by a batch-processing module. Hydrological signatures were finally used to help identify if the hydrological model simulated total runoff and corresponding proportions properly. The results showed that: (1) TRMM data were very useful for hydrological simulation in high and cold mountainous catchments; (2) precipitation was the primary contributor nearly all year round, reaching 56.5% of the total runoff on average; (3) groundwater occupied the biggest proportion during dry seasons, whereas snowmelt made a substantial contribution only in late spring and summer; and (4) hydrological signatures were useful for helping to evaluate the performance of the hydrological model.

Abstract:From the water balance analysis using Eagleson's ecohydrological model in the non-humid regions of China, the allocation of evpotranspiration flux among canopy transpiration, surface interception, and bare soil evaporation is analyzed and the quantitative relationship between the vegetation and soil moisture is derived. It implies that change of vegetation coverage due to climate variation and human activity can be potentially predicted through the soil moisture change. Combination of the Budyko's water-energy balance model and the Eagleson's ecohydrological model is used for predicting the impact of climate and vegetation changes on the catchment water balance, which shows that the combined model has the capacity of capturing the regional soil-vegetation-atmosphere interaction, and is useful for assessing the long-term effect of vegetation changes on catchment hydrology, and hence it has implications to the water resources management in the non-humid regions of China.
Seasonality of Precipitation and Potential Evaporation and Its Impact on Catchment Water-Energy Balance

Abstract:Through an analysis on hydrologic and climatic data from 108 catchments in north China by a water-energy balance method, this study found that catchment evaporation depends not only on the amounts of precipitation and potential evaporation, but also on the seasonalily difference between seasonal precipitation and potential evaporation. To parameterize seasonality, climate seasonality index （S） is introduced in this paper, and correlation analysis shows that this index is an important factor in determining actual evaporation. Therefore, we put forth an empirical equation to include its effect in estimation of the parameters of waterenergy balance equation, which improves the estimation of actual evaporation. This study also found that during the past 40 years the index S took a trend of significant variation, and it caused a change of 20% or more in the actual evaporation over 20% of the 108 catchments.
Evapotranspiration Over Heterogeneous Vegetated Surfaces: Models and Applications

Abstract:The focus of this work is the development of models to estimate evapotranspiration (ET), investigating the partitioning between soil evaporation and plant transpiration at field and regional scales, and calculating ET over heterogeneous vegetated surfaces. Different algorithms with varying complexities as well as spatial and temporal resolutions are developed to estimate evapotranspiration from different data inputs. The author proposes a novel approach to estimate ET from remote sensing by exploiting the linkage between water and carbon cycles. At the field scale, a hybrid dual source model (H-D model) is proposed. It is verified with field observations over four different ecosystems and coupled with a soil water and heat transfer model, to simulate water and heat transfer in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. At the regional scale, a hybrid dual source scheme and trapezoid framework based ET model (HTEM), using remote sensing images is developed. This model is verified with data from the USA and China and the impact of agricultural water-saving on ET of different land use types is analyzed, in these chapters. The author discusses the potential of using a remote sensing ET model in the real management of water resources in a large irrigation district. This work would be of particular interest to any hydrologist or micro-meteorologist who works on ET estimation and it will also appeal to the ecologist who works on the coupled water and carbon cycles. Abstract:An analytical coupled water-energy balance equation at arbitrary time acale was derived by dimension analysis and mathematical derivation.The equation has only one parameter.The equation is validated by the flux observation data from the Weishan Experimental Station in China and the Yakutsk Experimental Station in Russia.It shows that the equation can estimate the actual evaportranspiration over differentent time scales,from monthly time scade to daily time scale.The water balance analysis on 4 catchments in the Yellow River Basin further verifies that it can well simulate the annual evaportranspiration.The further investigation reveals that the unique parameter is linearly related to the leaf area index.The equation is the same as the Budyko hypothesis at long-term time-scale and is the same as the Penman at short time scale.

Evaluation of Evapotranspiration Estimates for Two River Basins on the Tibetan Plateau by a Water Balance Method

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (E) at regional or basin scale is difficult to estimate. This study estimates E with a water balance method for the upper Yellow River and Yangtze River basins on the Tibetan Plateau, where in situ data accessibility is especially insufficient. Results indicate that annual terrestrial water storage change in the two basins is negligible, and basin-scale E can be reliably estimated by the difference between precipitation and runoff. Thus, four E products from Zhang-(Zhang_E), MODIS (MODIS_E), Japanese 25-year reanalysis product (JRA_E), and the newly published Global Land Data Assimilation System with Noah Land Surface Model-2 (GLDAS_E)-are evaluated against E estimated by the water balance method. GLDAS_E and Zhang_E had the best performance for the upper Yellow River basin and Yangtze River basin, respectively, with relatively small underestimation. Further analysis showed that the underestimation of GLDAS_E was mainly caused by its negative bias for precipitation, whereas the overestimation of JRA_E was due to overestimation of downward shortwave radiation. MODIS_E greatly overestimated E in both basins, which was also caused by high downward shortwave radiation flux inputs from the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. Thus, more accurate forcing data for these products should be a future focus, since they can improve E estimates, at least for the Tibetan Plateau. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of Surface Evapotranspiration over the Dongjiang River Basin Based on MOD16

Abstract:Evapotranspiration plays a key role in maintaining the energy balance and water circulation in a basin. On the basis of MOD16 remote sensing dataset, we analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of surface evapotranspiration in Dongjiang River Basin on inter-annual and annual scales, and researched the temporal and spatial characteristics of surface evapotranspiration of different land cover types. Results illustrated that: (1) The amount of evapotranspiration ( ET) in the midstream of Dongjiang River Basin is larger than that in the down-stream and the upstream in sequence, while the amount of potential evapotranspiration ( PET) follows the order of downstream >midstream >upstream. (2) On inter-annual (one decade) scale, ET fluctuates little, whereas PET fluctuates remarkably, both presenting rising trends after 2014. (3) On annual scale, ET displays a single peak, mounting to the top in September and concentrating in May-October, while dropping to the valley in February and remaining low from December to next February. The mean value of ET in Autumn is the largest, followed by that in Summer, Spring, and Winter in sequence. (4) In terms of land use types, the annual ET on bare land is the lar-gest, followed by cultivated field, urban area, grassland, and woodland in sequence, while PET shows an order of urban area >cultivated field >grassland >woodland >bare land. The monthly ET has a same regularity in gener-al. In winter, the coefficient of variation of ET is high and in summer is low. The coefficient of variation of ET on woodland is low and the degree of dispersion is small. The research results are of great significance for the preven-tion of drought and waterlogging in the Dongjiang River Basin.

Abstract:Efforts to develop effective climate strategies necessitate a better understanding of the relationship between terrestrial water and carbon cycles. Water use efficiency (WUE) has been often used to characterize this relationship, while the role of transpiration (T) in the variation of ecosystem WUE has been less investigated. Here, we partitioned WUE ET (the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET)) into a two-component process, i.e., the ratio of gross primary productivity to plant transpiration, GPP/T, that is WUE T , and the ratio of plant transpiration to evapotranspiration, T/ET. Based on two GPP datasets (i.e., GPP based on the light use efficiency model or the vegetation index- NIRv) and the GLEAM ET dataset, this study investigated the role of T in the variation of WUE in the ecosystem level and how the role is affected by drought. We found that drought can lead to the change of ET partitioning, thus affecting the variability of WUE. The variability of WUE ET was dominated by WUE T . In general, the proportion of T increased gradually from humid to arid areas. To adapt to drought conditions, vegetation in arid areas tend to have a high stress resistance by increasing their WUE. We further found that WUE T has stronger seasonal stability than WUE ET . GPP dominated WUE ET variability in humid/sub humid areas, while ET and GPP jointly dominated WUE ET variability in semi-arid/arid areas. GPP dataset based on light use efficiency (LUE) could better reflect the impact of drought on vegetation. This study contributes to a better understanding of the change mechanism of ecosystem WUE and emphasizes the critical role of physiological process components in water-carbon cycling.

Analysing Inter-Annual Variability of the Water-Energy Balance in the Upstream Watershed of the Panjiakou Reservoir.

Abstract:The Panjiakou Reservoir is the largest reservoir on the Luan River, which is a major surface water source, but reservoir inflow has decreased significantly in recent decades. The physical aspect of the hydrological cycle in the upstream of the reservoir is studied to understand the hydrological changes and provide a sound scientific basis of water resources management. In the present research, a distributed hydrological model (i.e. GBHM) and a simple water-energy balance model based on the Budyko hypothesis were used. Using the climate and discharge data of 1980-1991, the present study analyses the inter-annual variability of water balance. The daily discharges at different locations are simulated by the GBHM model, and the actual evapotranspiration is estimated using both the GBHM and water-energy balance model. Comparing the results, both models give similar results that show the same complementary relationship between actual and potential evapotranspiration on an annual time scale.

Abstract:Daily evapotranspiration (ET) and its components of evaporation (E) and transpiration (T) at field scale are often required for improving agricultural water management and maintaining ecosystem health, especially in semiarid and arid regions. In this study, multi-year daily ET, E, and T at a spatial resolution of 100 m in the middle reaches of Heihe River Basin were computed based on an ET partitioning method developed by combing remote sensing-based ET model and multi-satellite data fusion methodology. Evaluations using flux tower measurements over irrigated cropland and natural desert sites indicate that this method can provide reliable estimates of surface flux partitioning and daily ET. Modeled daily ET yielded root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.85 mm for cropland site and 0.84 mm for desert site, respectively. The E and T partitioning capabilities of this proposed method was further assessed by using ratios E/ET and T/ET derived from isotopic technology at the irrigated cropland site. Results show that apart from early in the growing season when the actual E was reduced by plastic film mulching, the modeled E/ET and T/ET agree well with observations in terms of both magnitude and temporal dynamics. The multi-year seasonal patterns of modeled ET, E, and T at field scale from this ET partitioning method shows reasonable seasonal variation and spatial variability, which can be used for monitoring plant water consumption in both agricultural and natural ecosystems.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration(ET) is the key factor to the research on water circulation and heat balance in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system.In this article,a pixel based adapted DHSVM distributed hydrological model that integrates remote sensing and geographic information system was applied in the Ziwuhe River watershed in the upper Hanjiang River basin.The modeled pixel is 60 m large.Our study focused on the atmospheric and topographic correction on optical remote sensing data and utilizing 30 m resolution Landsat TM data to obtain leaf area index and the land use and land cover data.Some useful terrain factors as slope and aspect and topographic index could also be derived from digital elevation model.The results showed that the spatial pattern of ET was similarity in different temporal scales,moreover,it was found that daily ET spatial differences were more evident.The result also showed that the distributed model could be used in small basin of humid climate.

Abstract:The regression tree method is used to upscale evapotranspiration (ET) measurements at eddy-covariance (EC) towers to the grassland ecosystems over the Dryland East Asia (DEA). The regression tree model was driven by satellite and meteorology datasets, and explained 82% and 76% of the variations of ET observations in the calibration and validation datasets, respectively. The annual ET estimates ranged from 222.6 to 269.1 mm yr(-1) over the DEA region with an average of 245.8 mm yr(-1) from 1982 through 2009. Ecosystem ET showed decreased trends over 61% of the DEA region during this period, especially in most regions of Mongolia and eastern Inner Mongolia due to decreased precipitation. The increased ET occurred primarily in the western and southern DEA region. Over the entire study area, water balance (the difference between precipitation and ecosystem ET) decreased substantially during the summer and growing season. Precipitation reduction was an important cause for the severe water deficits. The drying trend occurring in the grassland ecosystems of the DEA region can exert profound impacts on a variety of terrestrial ecosystem processes and functions.
Modeling Ecohydrological Processes and Spatial Patterns in the Upper Heihe Basin in China

Abstract:The Heihe River is the second largest inland basin in China; runoff in the upper reach greatly affects the socio-economic development in the downstream area. The relationship between spatial vegetation patterns and catchment hydrological processes in the upper Heihe basin has remained unclear to date. In this study, a distributed ecohydrological model is developed to simulate the hydrological processes with vegetation dynamics in the upper Heihe basin. The model is validated by hydrological observations at three locations and soil moisture observations at a watershed scale. Based on the simulated results, the basin water balance characteristics and their relationship with the vegetation patterns are analyzed. The mean annual precipitation and runoff increase with the elevation in a similar pattern. Spatial patterns of the actual evapotranspiration is mainly controlled by the precipitation and air temperature. At the same time, vegetation distribution enhances the spatial variability of the actual evapotranspiration. The highest actual evapotranspiration is around elevations of 3000-3600 m, where shrub and alpine meadow are the two dominant vegetation types. The results show the mutual interaction between vegetation dynamics and hydrological processes. Alpine sparse vegetation and alpine meadow dominate the high-altitude regions, which contribute most to the river runoff, and forests and shrub contribute relatively small amounts of water yield.

Abstract:Study Region Three-River Source Region, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China. Study Focus Evapotranspiration (ET) is often the largest loss of water from grassland ecosystems and consists of two constituents: evaporation (E) and transpiration (T), but it is very difficult to separate E and T. In this study, we used an energy balance model (Shuttleworth-Wallace) and a water balance model (SOILWAT2) to estimate the water budget variables over a 10-year period (2007–2016) in a degraded alpine meadow in the Three-River Source Region on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. New Hydrological Insights for the Region The models produced contrasting patterns of precipitation and ET partitioning at the study site. Precipitation partitioning by SW2 resulted in substantial fluxes of both ET and deep drainage, while ET estimated by SW consumed almost all precipitation. ET was partitioned by the models into different annual E and T fluxes as well as different monthly and annual T/ET. Our study site located in an important water source region suggests that its water balance would contribute to drainage which aligns better with SW2 results. The surprising discrepancies between the models in the partitioning of precipitation into T, E, and deep drainage, however, is limiting our understanding and management of the degraded site and will require future work to reconcile.

Abstract:An integrated and flexible numerical model has been established to simulate and study the evaporation, transpiration and evapotranspiration mechanism of moisture on land-surface with complex vegetative cover. To better simulate this process, the authors apply some reasonable modifications to the parameterization of edaphic process too. The model is used to simulate the process of Zhangye station during IOP2 of HEIFE, and the results are generally in good agreement with observations. It indicates that the model developed can be used to study the interaction between land surface and atmospheric boundary layer over arid and semi-arid regions. Thus it can be used on evaluating the environment and shaping measures for sustainable development.

However, large errors are reported by many documents over various ecosystems with the same approach, which indicates that further analysis of the diurnal pattern of EF is still necessary. The aim of this study is to examine the diurnal pattern of EF under fair weather conditions, then to analyze the dependencies of EF to meteorological and plant factors. Long-term flux observations at four sites over semi-arid and semi-humid climate regions in the northern China are used to analyze the EF diurnal pattern. Results show that the EF self-preservation assumption no longer holds over growing seasons of crops. However, the ratio of reference ET to available energy is almost constant during the daytime, which implies the climate factors do not have much effect on the variability of EF. The analysis of diurnal pattern of air temperature, vapor pressure deficiency (VPD), and relative humidity (RH) confirms the assumption that ET diurnal pattern is mainly influenced by stomatal regulation.
Global Patterns and Climate Drivers of Water‐use Efficiency in Terrestrial Ecosystems Deduced from Satellite‐based Datasets and Carbon Cycle Models

Abstract:AimTo investigate how ecosystem water-use efficiency (WUE) varies spatially under different climate conditions, and how spatial variations in WUE differ from those of transpiration-based water-use efficiency (WUEt) and transpiration-based inherent water-use efficiency (IWUEt).LocationGlobal terrestrial ecosystems.MethodsWe investigated spatial patterns of WUE using two datasets of gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) and four biosphere model estimates of GPP and ET. Spatial relationships between WUE and climate variables were further explored through regression analyses.ResultsGlobal WUE estimated by two satellite-based datasets is 1.90.1 and 1.8 +/- 0.6g C m(-2)mm(-1) lower than the simulations from four process-based models (2.0 +/- 0.3g C m(-2)mm(-1)) but comparable within the uncertainty of both approaches. In both satellite-based datasets and process models, precipitation is more strongly associated with spatial gradients of WUE for temperate and tropical regions, but temperature dominates north of 50 degrees N. WUE also increases with increasing solar radiation at high latitudes. The values of WUE from datasets and process-based models are systematically higher in wet regions (with higher GPP) than in dry regions. WUEt shows a lower precipitation sensitivity than WUE, which is contrary to leaf- and plant-level observations. IWUEt, the product of WUEt and water vapour deficit, is found to be rather conservative with spatially increasing precipitation, in agreement with leaf- and plant-level measurements.Main conclusionsWUE, WUEt and IWUEt produce different spatial relationships with climate variables. In dry ecosystems, water losses from evaporation from bare soil, uncorrelated with productivity, tend to make WUE lower than in wetter regions. Yet canopy conductance is intrinsically efficient in those ecosystems and maintains a higher IWUEt. This suggests that the responses of each component flux of evapotranspiration should be analysed separately when investigating regional gradients in WUE, its temporal variability and its trends.
