Abstract:In this paper, we present a new System Description Language (SDL): PDSDL (Python based dynamic system description language). It is used in system modeling and verification, even it can be synthesized to a hardware description language (e.g. Verilog) for implementation on FPGA or ASIC. PDSDL promises to be more flexible and productive than prevalent SystemC. (1) Different from SystemC, it uses Python language other than C/C++ to enjoy the massive merits. (2)Though they both add necessary system related properties to a general-purpose language to achieve their goals, they differ greatly in essence. PDSDL innovatively proposes the dynamic system concept. The modeling, verification and synthesis all rely on the properties of the dynamic changeable system, not the static description in related storage. In addition, Dynamic system enables more efficient design-space exploration by using artificial intelligent method. As a use case, we apply PDSDL to our real-time embedded Java processor design. From our experience, it can speed up productivity at least 5. In addition, the difficulty to develop further tool chain is reduced.

Abstract:Paisley is an extensible lightweight embedded domain-specific language for nondeterministic pattern matching in Java. Using simple APIs and programming idioms, it brings the power of functional-logic processing of arbitrary data objects to the Java platform, without constraining the underlying object-oriented semantics. Here we present an extension to the Paisley framework that adds pattern-based control flow. It exploits recent additions to the Java language, namely functional interfaces and lambda expressions, for an explicit and transparent continuation-passing style approach to control. We evaluate the practical impact of the novel features on a real-world case study that reengineers a third-party open-source project to use Paisley in place of conventional object-oriented data query idioms. We find the approach viable for incremental refactoring of legacy code, with significant qualitative improvements regarding separation of concerns, clarity and intentionality, thus making for easier code understanding, testing and debugging.

Abstract:Physical programming is effective in multi-objective optimization since it assists the designer to find the most preferred solution. Preference-function-based physical programming (PFPP) abandons the weighted-sum approach and its performance in generating Pareto solutions is susceptible to the transformation of pseudo-preferences. With the aim of integrating a weighted-sum approach into physical programming and generating well-distributed Pareto solutions, a weight-function-based physical programming (WFPP) method has been proposed. The approach forms a weight function for each normalized criterion and uses the variable weighted sum of all criteria as the aggregate objective function. Implementation for numerical and engineering design problems indicates that WFPP works as well as PFPP. The design process of generating Pareto solutions by WFPP is further presented, where the pseudo-preferences are allowed to transform in different ranges. Examples and results demonstrate that solutions generated by WFPP have better diversity performance than those of PFPP, especially when the pseudo-preferences are far from the true Pareto front.
Enabling In-situ Programmability in Network Data Plane: From Architecture to Language

Abstract:In-situ programmability refers to the capability for network devices to update data plane functions and protocol processing logic at runtime without interrupting the services, driven by dynamic and interactive network operations towards autonomous networks. The existing programmable switch architecture (e.g., PISA) and programming language (e.g., P4) were designed for monolithic and static implementation, which requires a complete programming and deployment cycle for functional update, incurring long delay and service interruption. Addressing the fundamental reasons for such inflexibility, we design a new In-situ Programmable Switch Architecture (IPSA) and the corresponding design flow using rP4, a P4 language extension, as a fix. The compiler contains algorithms to support efficient resource mapping for both base design and incremental updates. To manifest the in-situ programming feasibility, we demonstrate several practical use cases on both a software switch, ipbm, and an FPGA-based prototype. Our experiments and analysis show that IPSA incurs moderate hardware cost which can be justified by its benefits and compensated by newer chip technologies. The in-situ programmability enabled by IPSA and rP4 advances the state of the art of programmable networks and opens a promising new design space.
A Language-Based Approach to Protocol Stack Implementation in Embedded Systems

Abstract:Network software is typically organized according toa layered architecture that is well understood. However, writingcorrect and efficient code that conforms with the architecture stillremains a problem. To overcome this problem we propose to usea domain specific language based approach. The architecturalconstraints are captured in a domain specific notation that can beused as a source for automatic program generation. Conformancewith the architecture is thus assured by construction. Knowledgefrom the domain allows us to generate efficient code. In addition,this approach enforces reuse of both code and designs, one ofthe major concerns in software architecture. In this paper, weillustrate our approach with PADDLE, a tool that generates packetprocessing code from packet descriptions. To describe packets weuse a domain specific language of dependent types that includespacket overlays. From the description we generate C librariesfor packet processing that are easy to integrate with other partsof the code. We include an evaluation of our tool.

Abstract:Modern programmable network switches can implement custom applications using efficient packet processing hardware, and the programming language P4 provides high-level constructs to program such switches. The increase in speed and programmability has inspired research in dataplane programming, where many complex functionalities, e.g., key-value stores and load balancers, can be implemented entirely in network switches. However, dataplane programs may suffer from novel security errors that are not traditionally found in network switches. To address this issue, we present a new information-flow control type system for P4. We formalize our type system in a recently-proposed core version of P4, and we prove a soundness theorem: well-typed programs satisfy non-interference. We also implement our type system in a tool, P4bid, which extends the type checker in the p4c compiler, the reference compiler for the latest version of P4. We present several case studies showing that natural security, integrity, and isolation properties in networks can be captured by non-interference, and our type system can detect violations of these properties while certifying correct programs.

Abstract:In Electronic Design Automation, current system-level design languages (e.g. SystemC) are all built from static languages (C/C++), and the design methodology is static. (1)This could lead to much inefficiency in description, verification, and synthesis. We have created the world's first Dynamic System-level Design Language (PDSDL [1]) by using popular dynamic language python, and a refining framework (Trilobite [2]) based on it. (2)In this article, we will not introduce how they are designed and implemented but focus on the concept of dynamic methodology, its benefit, and a refining framework. (3)We arrange our presentation according to the individual stages along the design, and give comparison and examples to show related benefit in each section. We also give a harmony refining framework at the end.

Abstract:Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are of increasing importance in scientific high-performance computing to reduce development costs, raise the level of abstraction and, thus, ease scientific programming. However, designing and implementing DSLs is not an easy task, as it requires knowledge of the application domain and experience in language engineering and compilers. Consequently, many DSLs follow a weak approach using macros or text generators, which lack many of the features that make a DSL a comfortable for programmers. Some of these features---e.g., syntax highlighting, type inference, error reporting, and code completion---are easily provided by language workbenches, which combine language engineering techniques and tools in a common ecosystem. In this paper, we present the Parallel Particle-Mesh Environment (PPME), a DSL and development environment for numerical simulations based on particle methods and hybrid particle-mesh methods. PPME uses the meta programming system (MPS), a projectional language workbench. PPME is the successor of the Parallel Particle-Mesh Language (PPML), a Fortran-based DSL that used conventional implementation strategies. We analyze and compare both languages and demonstrate how the programmer's experience can be improved using static analyses and projectional editing. Furthermore, we present an explicit domain model for particle abstractions and the first formal type system for particle methods.

Abstract:P4 is a domain-specific language for programming and specifying packet-processing systems. It is based on an elegant design with high-level abstractions like parsers and match-action pipelines that can be compiled to efficient implementations in software or hardware. Unfortunately, like many industrial languages, P4 has developed without a formal foundation. The P4 Language Specification is a 160-page document with a mixture of informal prose, graphical diagrams, and pseudocode, leaving many aspects of the language semantics up to individual compilation targets. The P4 reference implementation is a complex system, running to over 40KLoC of C++ code, with support for only a few targets. Clearly neither of these artifacts is suitable for formal reasoning about P4 in general. This paper presents a new framework, called Petr4, that puts P4 on a solid foundation. Petr4 consists of a clean-slate definitional interpreter and a core calculus that models a fragment of P4. Petr4 is not tied to any particular target: the interpreter is parameterized over an interface that collects features delegated to targets in one place, while the core calculus overapproximates target-specific behaviors using non-determinism. We have validated the interpreter against a suite of over 750 tests from the P4 reference implementation, exercising our target interface with tests for different targets. We validated the core calculus with a proof of type-preserving termination. While developing Petr4, we reported dozens of bugs in the language specification and the reference implementation, many of which have been fixed.

An Improved Physical Programming Method for Multi-Objective Inverse Problems

Abstract:Multi-objective design is very common in electrical engineering, and the development of new multi-objective optimizers becomes recently a topical issue in computational electromagnetics because of the unavailability of a universal multiobjective optimizer. In this regard, an improved physical programming (PP) method is presented to solve multi-objective electromagnetic inverse problems. The improvements include: (1) the multi-pseudo preference concept is introduced to overcome the deficiency of existing PP method in finding only one Pareto solution in a simulation and enhance the usage rate of sampling points; (2) a novel dynamically guiding mechanism is proposed to improve the computational efficiency and to provide the evolutionary direction; (3) some new rules for algorithm parameter updating are proposed to realize the two ultimate goals of an idea multi-objective optimizer of finding as many as possible Pareto optimal solutions and having them uniformly distributed on the Pareto Front. The results of typical mathematic test functions and a practical optimization design demonstrate the validity and advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract:Thousands of programming languages have been designed to meet different demands of application. Among the languages, many have been proposed merely for research exploration, while others have been developed for industrial software productions. Whatever the languages are targeted for, they are vehicles for implementing solutions in software engineering. Therefore, it is vital criteria to evaluate a language by principles of software engineering. But to our best knowledge, modern languages, especially the newly designed ones, are mostly designed to address domain-specific requirements, instead of focusing on the basic principles of software engineering. Thus, we develop a general-purpose language, SIMPLE, which supports the concise concepts adhering to the fundamental software engineering principles. To this end, simplicity, readability, reliability, security, scalability, and efficiency are established as goals of the language and various modular language features are provided. In this paper, we introduce the design of SIMPLE and discuss how its language features comply with the software engineering principles.

Abstract:The Isabelle/PIDE platform addresses the question whether proof assistants of the LCF family are suitable as technological basis for educational tools. The traditionally strong logical foundations of systems like HOL, Coq, or Isabelle have so far been counter-balanced by somewhat inaccessible interaction via the TTY (or minor variations like the well-known Proof General / Emacs interface). Thus the fundamental question of math education tools with fully-formal background theories has often been answered negatively due to accidental weaknesses of existing proof engines. The idea of "PIDE" (which means "Prover IDE") is to integrate existing provers like Isabelle into a larger environment, that facilitates access by end-users and other tools. We use Scala to expose the proof engine in ML to the JVM world, where many user-interfaces, editor frameworks, and educational tools already exist. This shall ultimately lead to combined mathematical assistants, where the logical engine is in the background, without obstructing the view on applications of formal methods, formalized mathematics, and math education in particular.

Abstract:A novel language for parameterized modeling of architecture components and structures is presented to provide comprehensive information of an architecture to facilitate its downstream activities such as verification, composition of bill of material and construction. The design objectives, key issues and detailed description of the syntax and structure of this language are introduced. The presentation methods for various aspects of the component information along with language elements are also illustrated. Practical application of this method to staircase modeling in the 3D architecture design software—EasyStructure is presented to show the capability and flexibility of the proposed modeling language.

Abstract:A class of linguistic controllers is derived using the combination of classical PID (proportional-integra l -derivative) control ideas and fuzzy set theory. Six different types of such controllers are proposed and their basic characteristics investigated and discussed. A fuzzy scaling technique is suggested for the reduction of off-line computational requirements. Simulation results are presented for comparing the performance of the controllers proposed, and to illustrate the advantages of such fuzzy PID controllers over that of the conventional PID controller.
Prose-to-P4: Leveraging High Level Languages

Abstract:Languages such as P4 and NPL have enabled a wide and diverse range of networking applications that take advantage of programmable dataplanes. However, software development in these languages is difficult. To address this issue, high-level languages have been designed to offer programmers powerful abstractions that reduce the time, effort and domain-knowledge required for developing networking applications. These languages are then translated by a compiler into P4/NPL code. Inspired by the recent success of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the task of code generation, we propose to raise the level of abstraction even higher, employing LLMs to translate prose into high-level networking code. We analyze the problem, focusing on the motivation and opportunities, as well as the challenges involved and sketch out a roadmap for the development of a system that can generate high-level dataplane code from natural language instructions. We present some promising preliminary results on generating Lucid code from natural language.
