Abstract:Burgess Shale−type (BST) Lagerstätten record an exceptional variety of Cambrian soft-bodied fauna, yet these deposits are typically restricted to outboard depositional settings >1000 km from the paleocoastline. For shallow, well-oxygenated shelf environments, our knowledge of non-mineralized animals (the majority of diversity) is severely limited, giving rise to substantial bias in our perception of Cambrian biotas. An alternate means of detecting soft-bodied Cambrian fauna, independent of paleobathymetry, is to use acid maceration to extract microscopic organic remains of non-mineralized animals, known as “small carbonaceous fossils” (SCFs). Here, a hitherto unknown diversity of Cambrian arthropod and mollusk remains are reported from shallow-marine sediments (Cambrian Stage 3 Mickwitzia Sandstone, Sweden). These microfossils comprise a variety of arthropod cuticles preserving sub-micron-scale anatomy alongside abundant radular mouthparts from mollusks—among the oldest known arthropod and molluscan SCFs on record. Significantly, at least three distinct types of fossil radula are identifiable (uniseriate, distichous, and polystichous forms), revealing that substantial diversification of the basic molluscan radula had already taken place by the early Cambrian. These cryptic elements of the biota—otherwise undetectable in such deposits—offer novel insights into Cambrian primary consumers as well as aspects of the fauna that are absent from deeper-water BST deposits.

Abstract:<p>The 'Cambrian Explosion' describes the rapid increase in animal diversity and abundance, as manifest in the fossil record, between ~540 and 520 million years ago (Ma). This event, however, is nested within a far more ancient record of macrofossils extending at least into the late Ediacaran at ~571 Ma. The evolutionary events documented during the Ediacaran–Cambrian interval coincide with geochemical evidence for the modernisation of Earth's biogeochemical cycles. Holistic integration of fossil and geochemical records leads us to challenge the notion that the Ediacaran and Cambrian worlds were markedly distinct, and places biotic and environmental change within a longer-term narrative. We propose that the evolution of metazoans may have been facilitated by a series of dynamic and global changes in redox conditions and nutrient supply, which, potentially together with biotic feedbacks, enabled turnover events that sustained multiple phases of radiation. We argue that early metazoan diversification should be recast as a series of successive, transitional radiations that extended from the late Ediacaran and continued through the early Palaeozoic. We conclude that while the Cambrian Explosion represents a radiation of crown-group bilaterians, it was simply one phase amongst several metazoan radiations, some older and some younger.</p>

Abstract:Since Darwin’s time the total number of recorded fossils has grown enormously, and so has their importance as documents of the real history of the organic world. Many previously missing links in the documentation of the course of evolution have been found. The discovery of some of them had been predicted by comparative anatomists and embryologists. Some fossils are truly transitional between major existing groups so that their classification in the framework of established systematics is difficult. Fossils enable us to trace the evolution of vertebrates as far back as the Ordovician when the first fragmentary fish bones appear in the record. We have no reason to assume that vertebrates originated much before that time. Invertebrate fossils are abundant, so much so that they provide in many instances statistically significant samples. Evolutionary lineages have been established on the basis of collections made from successive strata, as well as by general comparisons of fossil representatives of different genera, families and higher taxa. The interrelationships of cephalopods, of decapod crustaceans, the origin of asteroids, the evolutionary lineages of many groups of bivalved molluscs, even of insects, are well documented by significant fossils. But when we ask such questions about the relationships between the classes of the coelenterates, or the arthropods, or when we try to find the ancestors of the brachiopods, or of the echinoderms, we get little, if any, more enlightenment from the study of fossils than from the investigation of living animals. We can follow these groups of animals down through the Palaeozoic strata into the Cambrian where most though not all phyla of the invertebrates are represented. When we reach the Lower Cambrian the record is diminished and Pre-Cambrian rocks are considered, as a general rule, to be unfossiliferous.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Subcommission of the International Commission on Stratigraphy is diligently working toward the goal of subdividing the Ediacaran Period into precise and useful chronostratigraphic units. As emphasized by Xiao and colleagues in 2016, one of the most effective tools in this endeavor will be the use of index fossils. Our special issue serves as a presentation of ongoing research efforts aimed at advancing this task and contains explorations into taxonomy, taphonomy, and the diversity of life during the Ediacaran Period.

Abstract:The Ediacaran-Cambrian transition, which incorporates the radiation of animals, lacks a robust global temporal and spatial framework, resulting in major uncertainty in the evolutionary dynamics of this critical radiation and its relationship to changes in palaeoenvironmental geochemistry. We first present a new δ13Ccarb composite reference curve for the Ediacaran Nama Group of southern Namibia, and we then outline four new possible global age models (A to D) for the interval 551–517 million years ago (Ma). These models comprise composite carbonate‑carbon isotope (δ13Ccarb) curves, which are anchored to radiometric ages and consistent with strontium isotope chemostratigraphy, and are used to calibrate metazoan distribution in space and time. These models differ most prominently in the temporal position of the basal Cambrian negative δ13Ccarb excursion (BACE). Regions that host the most complete records show that the BACE nadir always predates the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary as defined by the first appearance datum (FAD) of the ichnospecies Treptichnus pedum. Whilst treptichnid traces are present in the late Ediacaran fossil record, the FAD of the ichnospecies T. pedum appears to post-date the last appearance datums (LADs) of in situ representatives of the skeletal organisms Cloudina and Namacalathus in all environments with high-resolution δ13Ccarb data. Two age models (A and B) place the BACE within the Ediacaran, and yield an age of ~538.8 Ma for the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary; however models C and D appear to be the most parsimonious and may support a recalibration of the boundary age by up to 3 Myr younger. All age models reveal a previously underappreciated degree of variability in the terminal Ediacaran, incorporating notable positive and negative excursions that precede the BACE. Nothwithstanding remaining uncertainties in chemostratigraphic correlation, all models support a pre-BACE first appearance of Cambrian-type shelly fossils in Siberia and possibly South China, and show that the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition was a protracted interval represented by a series of successive radiations.

Abstract:The exceptionally preserved soft-bodied fossils from the Chengjiang Biota of southwest China have proved to be critical for our understanding of the biodiversity and ecology of the Cambrian explosion of animals. Almost all previously reported soft-bodied Chengjiang fossils are from the event mudstone beds (EB) of the Yu’anshan Formation. Here, we present the first comprehensive investigation of the soft-bodied fossils from the interbedded background mudstone beds (BGB), based on collections made across the past decade, and characterize their preservation. Soft internal cellular organs/tissues, such as digestive tracts and glands, cardiovascular systems, nervous systems, and musculature, are predominantly preserved as carbonaceous compressions, in contrast to their iron oxide−rich preservation in the EB. Our work highlights two distinct preservation modes within a single Burgess Shale−type Lagerstätte, possibly due to the complex interplay of decay, kerogenization, and pyritization.

Abstract:The discovery of the Fezouata biota in the latest Tremadocian of southeastern Morocco has significantly changed our understanding of the early Phanerozoic radiation. The shelly fossil record shows a well-recognized pattern of macroevolutionary stasis between the Cambrian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, but the rich soft-bodied Fezouata biota paints a different evolutionary picture. The Fezouata assemblage includes a considerable component of Cambrian holdovers alongside a surprising number of crown group taxa previously unknown to have evolved by the Early Ordovician. Study of the Fezouata biota is in its early stages, and future discoveries will continue to enrich our view of the dynamics of the early Phanerozoic radiation and of the nature of the fossil record. Abstract:Soft-tissue fossils capture exquisite biological detail and provide our clearest views onto the rise of animals across the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition. The processes contributing to fossilization of soft tissues, however, have long been a subject of debate. The Ediacaran Gaojiashan biota displays soft-tissue preservational styles ranging from pervasive pyritization to carbonaceous compression, and thus provides an excellent opportunity to dissect the relationships between these taphonomic pathways. Here geochemical analyses of the Gaojiashan fossil Conotubus hemiannulatus show that pyrite precipitation was fuelled by the degradation of labile tissues through bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). Pyritization initiated with nucleation on recalcitrant tube walls, proceeded centripetally, decelerated with exhaustion of labile tissues and possibly continued beneath the BSR zone. We propose that pyritization and kerogenization are regulated principally by placement and duration of the decaying organism in different microbial zones of the sediment column, which hinge on post-burial sedimentation rate and/or microbial zone thickness.

Abstract:In the absence of complex, bioturbating organisms, the seafloor during the Precambrian was covered in widespread organic matgrounds. The greatest diversity and complexity of organic mat textures occur in the Ediacaran fossil record as exemplified by the Ediacara Member of the Rawnsley Quartzite, which crops out in and around the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. This succession unambiguously demonstrates that heterogenous mats coexisted with and were central to the ecology and biology of the Ediacara Biota. Excavation of 33 fossiliferous beds with varying types and extents of organosedimentary surface textures provide the opportunity to utilize this record to develop criteria to evaluate the maturity or extent of growth of Ediacaran matgrounds and, using these characteristics, to examine the relationship between mat type, mat maturity and Ediacara Biota community structure. Based on the assumption that mat maturity represents an indicator of the duration of time between burial events, we can test predictions about the relationship between mat maturity and community development. We find that mat maturity, rather than the mat type itself, more strongly influenced the distribution of taxa and the development of Ediacara macroorganism communities. Using a ranked Mat Maturity Index, we find that although density of macroscopic body fossils and genus diversity correlate with mat maturity, evenness does not. We additionally find that the sessile taxa Obamus and Coronacollina are restricted to surfaces with mature mats whereas all other Ediacaran macrobiota show no connection to mat occurrence and maturity. However, we do observe that large Dickinsonia are more likely to occur on surfaces recording mature matgrounds. The exceptional record of mat surfaces preserved in the Flinders Ranges area demonstrates that, in addition to the apparent ecological role played by mat surfaces in Ediacaran communities, they were also likely a significant component of the Ediacara Member biomass and were integral to community function.

Abstract:The trace fossil record provides important insights into the evolution of early animals during the Ediacaran/Cambrian transition, with changes in ichnodiversity through time and between environments informing on the diversification of major body plans, behaviors, and niches. To quantify variation in the diversity of trace fossils across this critical interval, we propose a measure of trace fossil dissimilarity (ichnodissimilarity) based on vector calculation. Furthermore, by comparing discrepancies between the angular bisector and mean vector of two sets of vectorized fossil data, we are able to weigh the relative contribution of increases and decreases in the variation of occurrences of taxa. We used this metric to analyze an expansive dataset of Ediacaran/Cambrian trace fossils. The results allowed us to quantify the diversification of traces across this transition, informing on the timing of first appearance of different behaviors (e.g., foraging, grazing, and resting) and functional groups. By interpreting the results in the context of environmental changes and advancements in motility and sensory capabilities, we were able to pinpoint the onset and sequence of the Fortunian diversification event, Cambrian information revolution, and agronomic revolution, shedding light on the evolution of organismal body plans, behaviors, and locomotion during the Ediacaran/Cambrian transition. We identified two phases of origination and expansion during the divergence of early animal traces. Furthermore, by analyzing shallow- and deep-marine trace fossils, we were able to uncover evidence for a more rapid diversification of traces in shallow-marine environments, with progressive niche partitioning through the Ediacaran to Cambrian.

Abstract:Euarthropoda is one of the best-preserved fossil animal groups and has been the most diverse animal phylum for over 500 million years. Fossil Konservat-Lagerstätten, such as Burgess Shale-type deposits (BSTs), show the evolution of the euarthropod stem lineage during the Cambrian from 518 million years ago (Ma). The stem lineage includes nonbiomineralized groups, such as Radiodonta (e.g., Anomalocaris ) that provide insight into the step-by-step construction of euarthropod morphology, including the exoskeleton, biramous limbs, segmentation, and cephalic structures. Trilobites are crown group euarthropods that appear in the fossil record at 521 Ma, before the stem lineage fossils, implying a ghost lineage that needs to be constrained. These constraints come from the trace fossil record, which show the first evidence for total group Euarthropoda (e.g., Cruziana , Rusophycus ) at around 537 Ma. A deep Precambrian root to the euarthropod evolutionary lineage is disproven by a comparison of Ediacaran and Cambrian lagerstätten. BSTs from the latest Ediacaran Period (e.g., Miaohe biota, 550 Ma) are abundantly fossiliferous with algae but completely lack animals, which are also missing from other Ediacaran windows, such as phosphate deposits (e.g., Doushantuo, 560 Ma). This constrains the appearance of the euarthropod stem lineage to no older than 550 Ma. While each of the major types of fossil evidence (BSTs, trace fossils, and biomineralized preservation) have their limitations and are incomplete in different ways, when taken together they allow a coherent picture to emerge of the origin and subsequent radiation of total group Euarthropoda during the Cambrian.

Abstract:The Ediacaran to Cambrian transition witnessed great biological and environmental turnovers from the Precambrian to Phanerozoic. These changes are also reflected by the fossil records during that time. However, the fossil distribution was highly heterogenous. While diverse fossils were constantly found from the shallow shelf including restricted basins, reports from deep-water areas, which are characterized by chert-dominated formations straddling the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary, were scarce. Among them was the Liuchapo Formation that has been considered barren. In this study, a fossiliferous assemblage was found from the Liuchapo Formation in east Guizhou Province, South China. This assemblage comprises Palaeopascichnus jiumenensis, Horodyskia minor , multicellular algae that possibly related with red algae, cyanobacteria, sponge spicules, small shelly fossils, membrane structures of uncertain affinity, and fossils with structures resemble the Ediacaran Megasphaera. Palaeopascichnus and Horodyskia have been widely reported and abundant in the Liuchapo Formation and equivalents, while the others have seldomly, or never, been found from this formation or, more widely, the deep-water chert of transitional interval. The discovery not only contributes to the rare paleontological records preserved in deep-water sediments, but also expanded the geographic distribution of the fossils, providing new materials of biological diversity during this critical interval.

Abstract:Abstract The Tonian–Cambrian interval ( c. 0.9–0.5 Ga) witnessed major tectonic, climatic and chemical changes to the Earth system and culminated in the Ediacaran–Cambrian radiation of animals. Negative carbon isotope (δ 13 C) excursions of extraordinary magnitude form the backdrop to all these events and are consistent with the presence of a vast marine organic carbon reservoir that changed its size due to periodic imbalances between organic production (as an oxidant source) and terrestrial oxidant sinks. Prior to both Cryogenian glaciations, this pool of long-lived organic carbon may have become substantially depleted, leading to a weakening of the regulation of climate and oxygen. The late Ediacaran Shuram anomaly probably represents a third depletion event, which was followed by oxygenation and the Ediacaran–Cambrian radiation. The evolutionary diversification of animals shortened the ocean residence time of organic carbon and introduced new carbon cycle feedbacks that together helped to mould the modern Earth system.
Ediacaran tectographs from the Itajaí Basin: A cautionary tale from the Precambrian

Abstract:Simple and horizontal trace fossils from the Ediacaran Period (635–538.8 Ma) compose some of the oldest evidence for the presence of metazoans in the Proterozoic fossil record. Unfortunately, various abiotic processes may produce similar structures on sedimentary beds. One of the oldest records of the Ediacaran biota from Western Gondwana is preserved in the Itajaí Basin (SE Brazil), a peripheral foreland basin related to the Dom Feliciano Belt. The fossil assemblage in the Itajaí Basin consists of Aspidella , Nimbia , microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS), and problematic taxa, including filamentous body fossils. Moreover, foreland basins are characterized by thrust-related fold belts, a result form their compressive tectonic settings. Here we report a new occurrence of enigmatic repeated horizontal markings. These structures exhibit linear to looping markings that are strikingly similar to simple horizontal animal trace fossils. However, the repetitive, preferentially oriented morphologies, and direct association with clasts show that they are tectographs, a rare pseudofossil interpreted to be formed by tectonically-induced bed-to-bed shearing. Indeed, their preferential alignment (NW-SE), following the original tectonic stress field associated with the development of the Itajaí Basin, strongly supports this interpretation. Considering the tectographs from North Carolina slate belt and Kupferschiefer of Germany, the Itajaí Basin structures are the third occurrence worldwide of such pseudofossils and the first case for Ediacaran successions, exhibiting a clear relationship to the tectonic setting associated with Western Gondwana assembly. Hence, some criteria to evaluate putative trace fossils are proposed, and we suggest that caution is needed when dealing with sedimentary structures that are candidates to be produced by metazoan activity in the deep time. This cautionary tale is valuable for Precambrian and Paleozoic paleontologists and geologists with implications for future astrobiological studies.

Abstract:The terminal Ediacaran Period is signaled worldwide by the first appearance of skeletonizing tubular metazoan fossils, e.g., Cloudina Germs, 1972 and Sinotubulites Chen, Chen, and Qian, 1981. Although recent efforts have focused on evaluating the taxic composition and preservation of such assemblages from the southwestern United States, comparable forms reported in the 1980s from Mexico remain to be re-examined. Here, we reassess the latest Ediacaran skeletal materials from the La Ciénega Formation of the Caborca region in Sonora, Mexico, using a combination of analytical methods: optical microscopy of extracted fossils, thin-section petrography, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray tomographic microscopy. From our examination, we conclude that the La Ciénega hosts a polytaxic assemblage of latest Ediacaran tubular organisms that have been preserved through two taphonomic pathways: coarse silicification and calcareous recrystallization preserving finer details. Further, these fossils show signs that their shells might not have been inflexible or completely mineralized in vivo, and that they might also record tentatively interpreted predation traces in the form of drill holes or puncture marks. This work, along with ongoing efforts around the world, helps to provide a framework for biostratigraphic correlation and possible subdivision of the Ediacaran Period, and further shapes our view of metazoan evolution and ecology in the interval directly preceding the Cambrian explosion.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Bioturbating activities have played a vital role in shaping the marine ecosystem throughout metazoan history, influencing the abundance and preservation potential of body fossil-producing taxa and driving major environmental and geochemical changes. The earliest trace making behaviors arose during the late Ediacaran Period (∼ 560–541 Ma), disrupting the substrate previously occupied by dominantly sessile organisms. Simple dwelling and grazing behaviors exploited the organic-rich matgrounds, expanding into the underutilized microbial mat ecosystem. In the western United States, trace assemblages from Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary-spanning deposits document a thriving trace-maker ecosystem. One boundary-spanning deposit in this region, the lower member of the Wood Canyon Formation, crops out along the California-Nevada boundary and contains both trace and body fossil assemblages. The Chicago Pass section of the lower Wood Canyon Formation contains a suite of dominantly simple Ediacaran traces, which become commonplace in the upper part of the stratigraphic section, documenting the onset of prevalent trace-making behaviors in this region. While traces have been previously described from this locality, the addition of the complex trace Lamonte trevallis and quantification of trace fossil density of simple Ediacaran traces provides a more comprehensive ichnological view of the Chicago Pass section. Although Chicago Pass does not yield abundant tubicolous body fossils, as are found elsewhere in the region, the low diversity ichnoassemblages document both burgeoning surficial trace making groups and mat-targeted mining in the latest Ediacaran. The behaviors present at Chicago Pass are similar to those of the Dengying Formation in South China, and highlight the need for petrographic-based trace fossil studies. Additionally, studies of Nama Group trace fossils of the same age from Namibia report higher diversity and complexity in trace-making activities than what has been observed at Chicago Pass, but with similar, low Ediacara biota body fossil diversity. If Ediacara biota diversity is anticorrelated with trace-making behaviors, Chicago Pass represents a low-complexity end-member of the same phenomenon observed in Namibia. The effect of surface sediment disruption on the sessile Ediacaran communities may have been decoupled from complexity of the traces, more so influenced by the presence of general trace-making behaviors in aggregate, including simple traces.

Abstract:In terminal Ediacaran strata of South China, the onset of calcareous biomineralization is preserved in the paleontological transition from Conotubus to Cloudina in repetitious limestone facies of the Dengying Formation. Both fossils have similar size, funnel-in-funnel construction, and epibenthic lifestyle, but Cloudina is biomineralized, whereas Conotubus is not. To provide environmental context for this evolutionary milestone, we conducted a high-resolution elemental and stable isotope study of the richly fossiliferous Gaojiashan Member. Coincident with the first appearance of Cloudina is a significant positive carbonate carbon isotope excursion (up to + 6 parts per thousand) and an increase in the abundance and S-34 composition of pyrite. In contrast, delta S-34 values of carbonate-associated sulfate remain steady throughout the succession, resulting in anomalously large (>70 parts per thousand) sulfur isotope fractionations in the lower half of the member. The fractionation trend likely relates to changes in microbial communities, with sulfur disproportionation involved in the lower interval, whereas microbial sulfate reduction was the principal metabolic pathway in the upper. We speculate that the coupled paleontological and biogeochemical anomalies may have coincided with an increase in terrestrial weathering fluxes of sulfate, alkalinity, and nutrients to the depositional basin, which stimulated primary productivity, the spread of an oxygen minimum zone, and the development of euxinic conditions in subtidal and basinal environments. Enhanced production and burial of organic matter is thus directly connected to the carbon isotope anomaly, and likely promoted pyritization as the main taphonomic pathway for Conotubus and other soft-bodied Ediacara biotas. Our studies suggest that the Ediacaran confluence of ecological pressures from predation and environmental pressures from an increase in seawater alkalinity set the stage for an unprecedented geobiological response: the evolutionary novelty of animal biomineralization.
Distinctive microfossil supports early Paleoproterozoic rise in complex cellular organisation

Abstract:The great oxidation event (GOE), ~2.4 billion years ago, caused fundamental changes to the chemistry of Earth's surface environments. However, the effect of these changes on the biosphere is unknown, due to a worldwide lack of well-preserved fossils from this time. Here, we investigate exceptionally preserved, large spherical aggregate (SA) microfossils permineralised in chert from the c. 2.4 Ga Turee Creek Group in Western Australia. Field and petrographic observations, Raman spectroscopic mapping, and in situ carbon isotopic analyses uncover insights into the morphology, habitat, reproduction and metabolism of this unusual form, whose distinctive, SA morphology has no known counterpart in the fossil record. Comparative analysis with microfossils from before the GOE reveals the large SA microfossils represent a step-up in cellular organisation. Morphological comparison to extant micro-organisms indicates the SAs have more in common with coenobial algae than coccoidal bacteria, emphasising the complexity of this microfossil form. The remarkable preservation here provides a unique window into the biosphere, revealing an increase in the complexity of life coinciding with the GOE.

Abstract:Significance The evolution of macroscopic animals in the latest Proterozoic Eon is associated with many changes in the geochemical environment, but the sequence of cause and effect remains a topic of intense research and debate. In this study, we use two apparently paradoxical observations—that massively phosphorus-rich rocks first appear at this time, and that the median P content of rocks does not change—to argue for a change in internal marine P cycling associated with rising sulfate levels. We argue that this change was self-sustaining, setting in motion a cascade of biogeochemical transformations that led to conditions favorable for major ecological and evolutionary change.
