Abstract:This study investigates the impacts of various factors on e-bike riders' injury severity in crashes with motor vehicles, based on the in-vehicle recording video crash data in China. Variables from human factors, vehicle characteristics, road conditions, and environmental attributes are extracted from the video, especially for drivers and riders' illegal and avoidance behaviour before the crash, and sun shade canopy use. Results of mixed logit models reveal that drivers' speeding, running red lights, slow-down and swerve behaviour, light trucks, heavy trucks, and buses have significantly varied impacts on riders' injury. Moreover, both drivers and riders' illegal behaviour leads to an increased injury, while their avoidance behaviour before crashes can protect riders. In addition, types of visual obstacles, accidents occurring at night, large vehicles' involvement, and the application of sunshade canopies by riders increased the probability of severe injury, while helmet use can protect riders in accidents with motor vehicles.

Abstract:Bicycles and electric bike riding have reshaped the transportation system worldwide and have significantly contributed to road traffic injuries. However, the risk factors associated with such injuries remain unclear. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to update and summarize the available evidence regarding risk factors that have been associated with bicycle and electric bike-related injuries in China. We searched for studies related to bicycles and electric bike-related injuries and deaths in China that were published in English from January 2000 to December 2020. In total, 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. Four domains of risk factors associated with such injuries were identified, including sociodemographic factors (e.g., age, sex, education level), riding behaviour (e.g., traffic rule violations, not wearing a helmet), vehicle and road factors (e.g., type of nonmotor vehicle and type of road), and temporal factors (such as commuting-hour riding or rush-hour riding). The pooled analysis showed that the mortality rate of e-bike injuries in China was 9.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.0%–13.0%). Understanding and identifying injury-related risk factors associated with bicycles and electric bike riding could provide important evidence to guide traffic safety management. More efforts are needed to reduce bicycle- and electric bike-related injuries in China. Targeted interventions, including enforcing helmet usage, requiring a driver's licence to operate scooter-style electric bikes, and establishing a data collection and safe-riding credit system, may need to be developed. Moreover, given the global phenomenon of population ageing, targeted injury prevention interventions should be developed for senior riders, who are more likely to sustain severe bicycles and electric bike-related injuries and die due to injury.

Abstract:This study aims to compare the accident injury severity of e-bikes with that of other types of two-wheelers based on accident data and to analyze the factors influencing them. Using 1015 police accident records from Zhangjiakou City in 2020 and 2021, the accident injury severity of e-bikes was firstly compared with that of other two-wheelers based on five levels of accident injury severity classified according to the records. Two ordered Probit regression models were secondly used to compare the factors influencing the accident injury severity of e-bikes with that of other two-wheelers and the magnitude of their effects. At the same time, the contributions of each influential factor to the degree of accident injury of two-wheelers were estimated with the assistance of classification trees. Results show that e-bikes are closer to bicycles than motorcycles in terms of injury severities and the factors influencing them, in which the factors "accident configuration," "division of responsibility for the accident," and "collision with a heavy vehicle or four-wheeled vehicle" are significant. Based on the findings, potential measures are suggested to reduce e-bike accident casualties, such as improving rider education, ensuring speed limit enforcement, promoting safety equipment wearing, and making road design friendly to non-motorized and elderly riders. The results of this study can provide an essential reference for traffic management and rider education measures on e-bikes.
Related risk factors for injury severity of e-bike and bicycle crashes in Hefei

Abstract:Objective: To explore the related risk factors of injuries caused by e-bike and bicycle crashes in Hefei, Anhui. Methods: Between June 2009 and June 2011, the records of injuries were triggered by e-bike and bicycle crashes in Hefei maintained by 105th Hospital of PLA. A form was designed to document patient age, gender, road user category (driver, passenger, pedestrian), safety factors (safety devices present, speed, traffic violations), environmental factors (time of trauma, light conditions, road surface), crash mode, impact type, and vehicle type. Results: Of the 205 cases, 108 were female and 97 were male. One hundred forty-six patients suffered injuries due to e-bike accidents and 59 due to bicycle accident. The chi-squared test compared distribution of categorical variables suggested that age (P =.0250), road user category (P =.0278), traffic rule violations (P =.0132), crash mode (P =.0027), impact type (P =.0019), and vehicle type (P =.0219) are related to the severity of injuries caused by e-bike/bicycle crashes in Hefei. The multiple-factor nonconditional logistic regression analysis showed that injury severity is the most commonly sustained within the vehicle type (odds ratio [OR] = 14.418; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.680-44.418), followed by crash mode (OR = 11.556; 95% CI, 4.430-30.142), traffic rule violations (OR = 4.735; 95% CI, 1.934-11.594), and age (OR = 2.910; 95% CI, 1.213-6.979). Conclusions: With the study of e-bike/bicycle crashes in Hefei, primary identification of the risk factors for the traffic injuries is obtained. These findings are important in decision making regarding preventive measures.
Traffic Safety for Electric Bike Riders in China

Abstract:The use of electric bikes (e-bikes) in China has grown tremendously in the past decade. Traffic safety for e-bike riders is an issue of growing public concern because the number of fatalities and injuries is increasing. A study was conducted to identify risk factors affecting involvement of e-bike riders in accidents and to establish the relationships between safety attitudes, risk perception, and aberrant riding behaviors. The data used for analysis were obtained from a self-reported questionnaire survey of a sample of 603 e-bike riders in two large cities in China. The results showed that both gender and automobile driving experience were significantly associated with at-fault accident involvement. Males were more likely to have at-fault accidents than were females, and riders with an automobile driver's license were less likely to have accidents than were those without a driver's license. Two types of aberrant riding behaviors, errors and aggressive behaviors, were found to be significant factors for predicting at-fault accident involvement. Analysis with a structural equation model indicated that safety attitudes and risk perception both significantly affected aberrant riding behaviors. E-bike riders with stronger positive attitudes toward safety and more worry and concern about their traffic risk tended to be less likely to have aberrant riding behaviors. Practical implications for improving road safety of e-bike riders are discussed.

Abstract:Police reports indicate an increasing burden of electric bike (E-bike) casualties in China; however, hospitalised injury data have not been reported. The aim of the present work was to describe hospitalised injury patterns for E-bikers involved in road crashes and explore injury risk disparities among them. For the period October 2010 to April 2011, this cross-sectional study retrospectively collected information for hospitalised E-bikers involved in road crashes from hospital records, in Suzhou China, using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) injury diagnosis codes. Injury nature and body region were further categorised using ICD-10 codes. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the risk of specific injury types. We found that hospitalised E-biker injuries (n=323) accounted for 57.2% of road traffic hospitalisations over the 6-month study period. The average age, length of stay and hospitalisation cost were 43.8 years, 10.0 days and ¥8229 (US$1286), respectively. Fractures and head injuries were common. The odds of traumatic brain injuries were significantly elevated for night-time E-bike crashes and incidents other than colliding with motor vehicles. These findings confirm E-bike injuries as an important population health problem and identify elevated injury odds in different E-biker groups. Future injury prevention initiatives should include encouraging helmet use among E-bikers.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries have become a burgeoning public health problem in China. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and potential risk factors of electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries among electric bike/moped riders in southern China.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was used to interview 3,151 electric bike/moped riders in southern China. Electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries that occurred from July 2014 to June 2015 were investigated. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews and analyzed between July 2015 and June 2017.RESULTS: The prevalence of electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries among the investigated riders was 15.99%. Electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries were significantly associated with category of electric bike (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.82), self-reported confusion (AOR = 1.77, 95% CI, 1.13-2.78), history of crashes (AOR = 6.14, 95% CI, 4.68-8.07), running red lights (AOR = 3.57, 95% CI, 2.42-5.25), carrying children while riding (AOR = 1.96, 95% CI, 1.37-2.85), carrying adults while riding (AOR = 1.68, 95% CI, 1.23-2.28), riding in the motor lane (AOR = 2.42, 95% CI, 1.05-3.93), and riding in the wrong traffic direction (AOR = 1.63, 95% CI, 1.13-2.35). In over 77.58% of electric bike/moped-related road traffic crashes, riders were determined by the police to be responsible for the crash. Major crash-causing factors included violating traffic signals or signs, careless riding, speeding, and riding in the wrong lane.CONCLUSION: Traffic safety related to electric bikes/moped is becoming more problematic with growing popularity compared with other 2-wheeled vehicles. Programs need to be developed to prevent electric bike/moped-related road traffic injuries in this emerging country.

Abstract:Electric two-wheeled vehicle is one of the main commuting tools in China, but they are also more likely to have violations of the road group. In order to study the effect of the presence of violation on the severity of road traffic crashes among electric two-wheeler riders, in this study, the effects of rider characteristics, road characteristics, collision characteristics, and environmental characteristics on the severity of injuries of electric two-wheeled vehicle riders were considered separately analyzed based on the data of 6403 two-wheeled electric vehicle traffic crashes in a region of Shandong Province from 2015 to 2021, and a random parametric logit model considering the heterogeneity of the mean and the variance (RP-HMV logit) was established based on the presence or absence of violation behaviors of riders, respectively, in order to explore unobserved heterogeneity. In order to test the validity of the model for modeling the injury severity of pedestrians riding electric two-wheelers, multinomial logit (MN-logit model), and random parameter logit model (RP-logit) were estimated, and the results showed that the RP-HMV logit model was significantly superior in terms of goodness of fit. The study showed that some of the factors differed somewhat between the two scenarios, such as gender, while the factors that were significant in both scenarios were >60, broken pavement, street lights at night, no street lights at night, mixed motorized and nonmotorized lanes, sidewalks, other angles, no control, severe weather, and visibility <200 m, where the severe weather and visibility <200 m were random parameters obeying normal distributions, there is a significant difference between having street lights and no control at night in both scenarios, and the difference is significant. The results of the study can provide a reference for the development of targeted countermeasures to improve the traffic safety of electric two-wheeled vehicles in China.

Effect of Helmet Wearing Regulation on Electric Bike Riders: a Case Study of Two Cities in China

Abstract:Objectives Electric bikes (e-bikes) are widely used for commuting and delivery in China. With the rapid increase in e-bikes on the road, related accidents have become crucial issues threatening the public. This research aims to explore the protective effect of helmet-wearing regulation and to investigate some factors influencing head injury with reference to two case cities in China, obtaining information to protect e-bike riders. Methods The traffic police-reported crash data cover the periods before and after the implementation of helmet-wearing regulations in Taizhou (with data from 2017 to 2019) and Nanning (with data in 2020) of China. Preliminary statistical analysis, logistic regression and chi-square test with a Bonferroni correction were applied in the research. Results A lack of helmets was common among victims in the context of a high helmet-wearing rate among general e-bike riders in Taizhou, indicating that fatality could be avoided to some extent by wearing helmets. Specifically, helmet wearing could reduce the probability of suffering fatal head injury by 6.4%. After the regulation implementation in Taizhou, the proportion of fatal head injuries decreased from 89% to 79%, remaining at a high level, which indicates that other measures in addition to helmet-wearing regulations should be taken. According to the results from Nanning, mandatory regulation worked more effectively than encouraged regulation in terms of reducing head injury. Conclusions Mandatory helmet-wearing regulations are highly recommended to policymakers to reduce head injury among e-bike riders. Measures in addition to helmet-wearing regulation, e.g. enhancing law-abiding awareness and improving road infrastructure, should be considered to further protect e-bike riders.

Abstract:Vehicle to vulnerable road user (VRU) crash is a large portion of traffic crashes in China Crash data from Beijing, China from the year 2009 to 2012 are used to identify the factors associated with the likelihood of vehicle to VRU crashes. 180 passenger-vehicles to VRU crashes are collected including 60 vehicle to pedestrian, 60 vehicle to bicycle and 60 vehicle to electric-bicycle cases. Then the statistics of the crash data are carried out, and the variables of human, vehicle, road, environment are investigated. Further, a logic regression model is established to analyse the significance of main contributing factors of these crashes. This paper describes the sample data, which includes time of incident, road user's age and gender, impact speed, crash pattern and VRU's head impact position. Also a comparative research among the three crash types is performed. According to the results, some characteristics of three crash types are different, such as the occurrence time, road position, impact speed and the impact position of VRU's head on the passenger-car. Moreover, chi-square test reveals that night-time travelling, crash type involving pedestrian and speeding of vehicle are significant related to non-fatal/fatal crashes. The logic regression model shows that night-time, intersection, older age of VRU and higher speed of vehicle increased the crash severity.
Road safety situation of courier and take-out food delivery electric bike riders: a cross-sectional study in one municipality in China

Abstract:Abstract Background To observe road traffic violation behaviors among courier and take-out food delivery electric bike rider and to characterize road traffic injuries occurred in this occupational population. Methods A cross-sectional field study including roadside observational data collection and face-to-face interviews was conducted by retrospective response through street intercept. Results 600 target populations were observed, and 480 were interviewed. The rate of over speed was 91.3%, and windshield use during winter was 91.2%. Traffic rule violations included riding in the motor vehicle lane (32.8%), not waiting behind the white line at a red light (23.3%), and using a cell phone when riding (21.2%). Helmet use was significantly more common in daytime than night (P=0.028). About 46% rode e-bike more than 8 hours per day. 76% of interviewees had suffered a traffic crash. About 14% crashes happened in motor-vehicle lanes and 8% in sidewalks. A logistic regression analysis indicated that compared with uninjured riders, injured riders showed significantly greater odds ratios of unsafe behaviors for running red lights (OR=1.75), and a protective effect for wearing a helmet (OR=0.56). Discussion Road safety issues need to be addressed through establishment or improvement of e-bike legislation in this vulnerable occupational group.

Abstract:Following a thriving delivery business and constantly improving road infrastructure and vehicle technologies, electric bicycles (e-bikes) are becoming one of the most popular modes of road transport in China. Although e-bikes are flexible and cost efficient, they contribute significantly to on-road collisions in China. Therefore, this study focuses on the traffic safety of e-bikes in China. Rather than following conventional engineering approaches, this study applies a sociotechnical analysis of the system, while focusing on the entities that significantly influence e-bike safety. Applying Rasmussen's risk management framework (RMF) and its associated Accimap methodology shapes the systematic analysis of e-bike collisions in China. This study identifies and discusses a general pattern of the contribution of social entities to e-bike collisions. As such, the authors developed a generic model of e-bike collisions in China. Couriers were considered important in this domain, and their status in the system was discussed. Moreover, recommendations have been proposed to improve e-bike traffic safety in China.

Abstract:In recent years, the electric scooter has become one of the most popular means of transportation on short trips. Due to the lag in the formulation of transportation policies and regulations, coupled with the increasing number of electric scooter crashes, there has been growing concern about the safety of pedestrians and electric scooter riders. For the first time in the extant literature, this study aims to analyze injury severity of electric scooter crashes by unobserved heterogeneity modeling approaches. A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances is utilized to examine the factors influencing injury severity, using data collected from the STATS19 road safety database. Electric scooter crashes are classified as single-vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes, with injury severity categorized into two groups: fatalities or serious injuries, and slight injuries. The model estimation was conducted by considering several variables including roadway, environment, temporality, vehicle, and rider characteristics, as well as second-party vehicle and driver characteristics and manners of collision specific to two-vehicle crashes. The results of the model estimation reveal that certain factors had relatively stable effects with the varying degree of crash injury severity outcomes in both single-vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes. These factors include nighttime incidents, weekdays, male riders, and an increase in rider age, all of which are associated with more severe injury outcomes. Moreover, the random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances is more flexible in accounting for unobserved heterogeneity and exhibits better goodness of fit. This study improves the understanding of electric scooter safety, and the finding can better inform public policy regarding electric scooter use to improve road safety and reduce injury severity of electric scooter crashes.
Influence of familiarity with traffic regulations on delivery riders' e-bike crashes and helmet use: Two mediator ordered logit models

Abstract:Micro-mobility vehicles such as electric bicycles, or e-bikes, are becoming one of the essential transportation modes in metropolitan areas, and most deliveries in large cities are dependent on them. Due to the e-bike's popularity and vulnerability, e-bike crash occurrence has become a major traffic safety problem in many cities across the world; finding the most important human factors affecting e-bike safety has thus been an important recent issue in traffic safety analysis. Since delivery riders are a key group of e-bike users, and since helmet use plays a crucial role in reducing the severity of a crash, this study conducted a city-wide online survey to analyze the helmet usage of 6,941 delivery riders in Shanghai, China. To determine the in-depth mechanisms influencing helmet use and e-bike crash occurrence, including the direct and indirect effects of the relevant factors, two mediator ordered logistic regression models were employed. The mediator ordered logistic model was compared with the traditional logistic regression model, and was found to be superior for modeling indirect as well as direct influencing factors. Results indicate that riders' familiarity with traffic regulations (FTR) is an extremely important variable mediating between the independent variables of riders' educational level and age, and the dependent variables of helmet use and e-bike crashes. Improving riders' FTR can consequently increase helmet use and decrease crash occurrence. Authorities can apply these findings to develop appropriate countermeasures, particularly in legislation and rider training, to improve e-bike safety.

In addition, 76.5% of interviewees had been involved in a traffic crash at least once. About 13.9% of crashes happened in motor vehicle lanes and 8.2% on sidewalks. Logistic regression analysis indicated that compared with uninjured riders, injured riders showed significantly greater odds ratios of unsafe behaviors for running red lights (odds ratio [OR] = 1.75) and protective factors for wearing a helmet (OR = 0.56).The courier and take-out food delivery population is a vulnerable occupational group and road traffic injuries related to e-bike use require more attention.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) in the past decade, many new traffic safety challenges are also emerging. With the crash data of Norway from 2011 to 2018, this study gives an overview of the status quo of EV crashes. In the survey period, the proportion of EV crashes in total traffic crashes had risen from zero to 3.11% in Norway. However, in terms of severity, EV crashes do not show statistically significant differences from the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV) crashes. Compared to ICEV crashes, the occurrence of EV crashes features on weekday peak hours, urban areas, roadway junctions, low-speed roadways, and good visibility scenarios, which can be attributed to the fact that EVs are mainly used for urban local commuting travels in Norway. Besides, EVs are confirmed to be much more likely to collide with cyclists and pedestrians, probably due to their low-noise engines. Then, the separate logistic regression models are built to identify important factors influencing the severity of ICEV and EV crashes, respectively. Many factors show very different effects on ICEV and EV crashes, which implies the necessity of re-evaluating many current traffic safety strategies in the face of the EV era. Although the Norway data is analyzed here, the findings are expected to provide new insights to other countries also in the process of the complete automotive electrification.

Abstract:Road traffic crashes cause fatalities and injuries of both drivers/passengers in vehicles and pedestrians outside, thus challenge public health especially in big cities in developing countries like China. Previous efforts mainly focus on a specific crash type or causation to examine the crash characteristics in China while lacking the characteristics of various crash types, factors, and the interplay between them. This study investigated the crash characteristics in Shenzhen, one of the biggest four cities in China, based on the police-reported crashes from 2014 to 2016. The descriptive characteristics were reported in detail with respect to each of the crash attributes. Based on the recorded crash locations, the land-use pattern was obtained as one of the attributes for each crash. Then, the relationship between the attributes in motor-vehicle-involved crashes was examined using the Bayesian network analysis. We revealed the distinct crash characteristics observed between the examined levels of each attribute, as well the interplay between the attributes. This study provides an insight into the crash characteristics in Shenzhen, which would help understand the driving behavior of Chinese drivers, identify the traffic safety problems, guide the research focuses on advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) and traffic management countermeasures in China.

Road safety risk factors for non-motorised vehicle users in a Chinese city: an observational study

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study is to describe and analyse the prevalence of speeding, helmet use and red-light running among riders of non-motorised vehicles (NMVs) in Shanghai, China, with a focus on electric bikes (ebikes). Methods: Observational studies were conducted in eight randomly selected locations in Shanghai. Descriptive statistics and a Cox proportional hazard (PH) model were used in the analyses. Findings: A total of 14 828 NMVs were observed in November 2017. At the free flow sites, the average speed was 22.5 km/hour for ebikes and 13.4 km/hour for bicycles. 95.5% of ebikes run above 15 km/hour, the legal speed limit for NMVs in China and 83.8% above 20 km/hour, the maximum design speed for ebikes. Helmet wearing rate was 13.5% for ebike drivers and 9.4% for passengers. Riders of commercial ebikes were nearly three times more likely to wear a helmet than personal ebikes. 22.4% of ebikes were observed to run a red light. The Cox PH model showed that ebikes (vs bicycles), males (vs females), clear weather (vs cloudy, rainy and snowy), helmet users (vs nonusers) are associated with a higher hazard for running a red light. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this study is among the first comprehensive evaluation of road user behaviours for NMVs in China. An effective intervention package including regulating ebike production to national standards, strengthening speed enforcement and passing legislation on mandatory helmet use for ebike users may be able to help.
