Abstract:Iodine was found to be an efficient catalyst for the imino Diels-Alder reaction of N-arylimine with enol ethers to provide tetrahydroquinolines in good yields. The influence of the loading of iodine, reaction solvent, the structure of imine and enol ethers was studied. One pot synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines from aldehyde, aniline and enol ethers catalyzed by iodine was also applicable and provided tetrahydroquinolines in comparable yields. Mild reaction conditions, facile experimental procedure, low price of iodine and good yield of products render this new method attractive for practical synthesis of many tetrahydroquinoline derivatives.

Abstract:Cycloaddition of N-arylimines with alpha-methylstyrenes or 2,3-dihydrofuran was efficiently catalyzed by tris(4-bromophenyl)aminium hexachloroantimonate (Ar3N+-SbCl6-) producing tetrahydroquinoline derivatives in excellent yields. The reaction was controlled sensitively by the oxidation potentials of the imine and the dienophile.

Abstract:Iodine was used to catalyze the hetero-Diels-Aider reaction of pentafluorobenzylidineaniline (C6F5CH=NAr 1) with enol ethers to afford the corresponding tetrahydroquinolines derivatives as a mixture of cis/trans stereoisomers in moderate yields. These products could also be prepared by onepot, three-component reaction of pentafluorophenylaldehyde, anilines, and enol ethers under the same reaction condition. Mild and neutral reaction conditions, facile experimental procedure, and low price of iodine should make this method attractive for practical synthesis of many fluorinated tetrahydroquinoline derivatives. Abstract:A one-pot synthesis of quinolines via molecular iodine-catalyzed and air-mediated tandem condensation/imino-Diels–Alder/isomerization/oxidation of simple readily available amines, aldehydes, and alkynes has been developed. This methodology was extended to synthesize quinazolines from two molecules of amines and two molecules of glyoxalates.

Abstract:A highly efficient method for the synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives via a molecular iodine catalyzed domino reaction of anilines with cyclic enol ethers, such as 2,3-dihydrofuran and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran, is described. The reaction may proceed through an aza-Diels–Alder process between an in situ generated 2-azadiene and another equivalent of cyclic enol.
