Abstract:Simple solution phase, catalyst-free synthetic approaches that offer monodispersed, well passivated, and non-aggregated colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have presented many research opportunities not only for fundamental science but also for technological applications. The ability to tune the electrical and optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals by manipulating the size and shape of the crystals during the colloidal synthesis provides potential benefits to a variety of applications including photovoltaic devices, light-emitting diodes, field effect transistors, biological imaging/labeling, and more. Recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of colloidal lead chalcogenide nanocrystals and the achievements in colloidal PbS or PbSe nanocrystals solar cells have demonstrated the promising application of infrared-emitting colloidal lead chalcogenide nanocrystals in photovoltaic devices. Here, we review recent progress in the synthesis and optical properties of colloidal lead chalcogenide nanocrystals. We focus in particular upon the size-and shape-controlled synthesis of PbS, PbSe, and PbTe nanocrystals by using different precursors and various stabilizing surfactants for the growth of the colloidal nanocrystals. We also summarize recent advancements in the field of colloidal nanocrystals solar cells based on colloidal PbS and PbSe nanocrystals.
Colloidal Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals: a Promising Juggernaut in Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have received considerable attention in recent years in view of their successful utilization in the research field of photovoltaics. While nanostructured semiconducting materials have been widely investigated in a variety of applications, colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals are distinguished as a family of versatile and attractive building blocks in optoelectronic applications owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yields, wieldy tunability of optical properties, and sterling size-dispersion and shape-uniformity. In this review, recent developments in the direct synthesis and reactions based on the ion-exchange of colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals are discussed first. Subsequently, particular emphases are placed on the morphology-controlled synthesis and self-assembly performance of colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals. In addition, the optoelectronic properties of colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals such as the tunable band gaps, the innate tolerance towards high density of defects, and the multiple exciton generation are explored in detail. Finally, the progresses in the applications of colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals in photovoltaic devices are presented. With a focus of preparing high-quality colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals to stimulate the development of highly efficient photovoltaic devices, the intention of this review is to introduce the current status of this type of novel optoelectronic candidate to researchers from various areas and to motivate them to devote more efforts to boost the performance of related photovoltaic devices to a competitive stage.

Abstract:Eco-friendly nanocrystals have attracted worldwide attention in recently years due to the ultrahigh absorption coefficient, broad absorbance range and non-toxic atoms of heavy metals e.g., lead and cadmium. With these benefits, the photovoltaic performance of eco-friendly nanocrystal solar cells (AgBiS2) has reached over 9% and exhibited great potential in the field of nanocrystal solar cells. In this review, we overviewed the synthesis, ligand exchange, device structure and stability of eco-friendly solar cells with the aim to advancing commercial applications. Firstly, we discussed the synthesis methods of eco-friendly nanocrystals and highlighted the key elements for high-quality nanocrystals. Thereafter, ligand exchange strategies were overviewed to further enhance the performance of AgBiS2 solar cells. Subsequently, we focused on device structure and presented an in-depth discussion on the photovoltaic stability to balance the performance and stability of AgBiS2 solar cells. Finally, the remaining challenges and our insights are proposed to further advance the development of eco-friendly solar cells based on AgBiS2 nanocrystals.

The aim of this review article is to present a comprehensive and current overview of inorganic QDs and their applications in HSCs. Fundamental properties of QDs are first illustrated. And then recent studies that have been done to elucidate charge dynamics of QDs and improve hybrid device performance are summarised and discussed in detail. Ultra-small Colloidal Heavy-Metal-free Nanoplatelets for Efficient Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:Metal chalcogenide semiconducting nanoplatelets exhibit a broad absorption spectrum, as well as thickness dependent optical and electronic properties. As such, they may be used as building blocks in a variety of optoelectronic devices. The direct synthesis of heavy-metal-free ultra-small sized nanoplatelets is still challenging, due to the inherent limits in existing synthetic approaches. Here, we report an efficient template-assisted cation exchange route to synthesize heavy metal free metal chalcogenide nanoplatelets that are optically active in the near infrared. The SnSe nanoplatelets, whose lateral dimension is 6-10 mn, exhibit a quantum yield of 20%. The nanoplatelets are applied as light absorbers in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system for hydrogen generation, leading to a saturated photocurrent density of 7.4 mA/cm(2), which is a record for PEC devices using heavy metal free colloidal quantum dots or nanoplatelets under identical measurement conditions. Our results indicate that quasi-zero-dimensional SnSe nanoplatelets hold great potential as efficient light absorbers for emerging optoelectronic technologies.
Solar light selective-harvesting eco-friendly colloidal quantum dots for transparent luminescent solar concentrators

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) constructed using colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a promising and cost-effective solution for transparent photovoltaics. However, the efficiency of these LSCs in converting sunlight to electricity often remains low due to limited quantum efficiency and significant reabsorption losses associated with the QDs. Furthermore, the majority of high-efficiency LSCs incorporate QDs containing heavy metals, curtailing their potential for widespread commercialization. Here, we have developed white-emitting CuGaS2/ZnS and its optical characteristics are adeptly tailored through manipulation of the ZnS shell. The optimal configuration of CuGaS2/ZnS demonstrates an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 80% and an extensive Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm. These QDs are integrated in a polymer matrix to produce LSCs with dimensions of 5 x 5 x 0.2 cm3. Under standard illumination conditions of one sun AM 1.5G (100 mW cm-2), these LSCs exhibit an optical efficiency of 1.7%, average visible transmittance of similar to 75% and color rendering index of 91.6. To improve the solar light harvesting, we constructed a tandem LSC, with CuGaS2/ZnS QD-LSC as the top layer and near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS QD-LSC was developed as the bottom layer. The optical efficiency could reach 4.4%, which underscores the potential of these environmentally friendly core/shell QDs for cost-effective transparent solar conversion applications. CuGaS2/ZnS quantum dots with a Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm and PLQY of 80% were developed for LSCs, which achieved an optical efficiency of 1.7%. A tandem configuration integrating near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS achieved an optical efficiency of 4.4%.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively investigated owing to their unique properties induced by the quantum confinement effect. The advent of colloidal synthesis routes led to the design of stable colloidal NCs with uniform size, shape, and composition. Metal oxides, phosphides, and chalcogenides (ZnE, CdE, PbE, where E = S, Se, or Te) are few of the most important monocomponent semiconductor NCs, which show excellent optoelectronic properties. The ability to build quantum confined heterostructures comprising two or more semiconductor NCs offer greater customization and tunability of properties compared to their monocomponent counterparts. More recently, the halide perovskite NCs showed exceptional optoelectronic properties for energy generation and harvesting applications. Numerous applications including photovoltaic, photodetectors, light emitting devices, catalysis, photochemical devices, and solar driven fuel cells have demonstrated using these NCs in the recent past. Overall, semiconductor NCs prepared via the colloidal synthesis route offer immense potential to become an alternative to the presently available device applications. This feature article will explore the progress of NCs syntheses with outstanding potential to control the shape and spatial dimensionality required for photovoltaic, light emitting diode, and photocatalytic applications. We also attempt to address the challenges associated with achieving high efficiency devices with the NCs and possible solutions including interface engineering, packing control, encapsulation chemistry, and device architecture engineering.

Abstract:Due to the promising applications in low-cost and high performance photovoltaic and thermoelectric devices, there has been a booming development of syntheses of colloidal I-III-VI2 and I-2-II-IV-VI4 (I = Cu, Ag; II = Zn, Cd; III = Al, Ga, In; IV = Ge, Sn; VI = S, Se, Te) nanocrystals during the past ten years. In this review, we aim to summarize comprehensively recent developments of I-III-VI2, I-2-II-IV-VI4 nanocrystals, where we focus more on synthetic procedures towards controlled phases and bandgaps. Combining with already achieved theoretical understanding, we try to find some common features of different synthetic routes, which might be extended to synthesize other I-III-VI2 and I-2-II-IV-VI4 nanocrystals with intentioned phases and bandgaps. We also highlight some of the latest advances in applications of these nanocrystals in photovoltaic and thermoelectric devices. Finally, we point out some problems and challenges existing in the fields based on our understanding, e.g., bandgap evaluation, precise cation occupation determination and relatively high cost generated during the synthetic procedures of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Chalcogenide semiconductors offer excellent optoelectronic properties for their use in solar cells, exemplified by the commercialization of Cu(In,Ga)Se2- and CdTe-based photovoltaic technologies. Recently, several other chalcogenides have emerged as promising photoabsorbers for energy harvesting through the conversion of solar energy to electricity and fuels. The goal of this review is to summarize the development of emerging binary (Sb2X3, GeX, SnX), ternary (Cu2SnX3, Cu2GeX3, CuSbX2, AgBiX2), and quaternary (Cu2ZnSnX4, Ag2ZnSnX4, Cu2CdSnX4, Cu2ZnGeX4, Cu2BaSnX4) chalcogenides (X denotes S/Se), focusing especially on the comparative analysis of their optoelectronic performance metrics, electronic band structure, and point defect characteristics. The performance limiting factors of these photoabsorbers are discussed, together with suggestions for further improvement. Several relatively unexplored classes of chalcogenide compounds (such as chalcogenide perovskites, bichalcogenides, etc.) are highlighted, based on promising early reports on their optoelectronic properties. Finally, pathways for practical applications of emerging chalcogenides in solar energy harvesting are discussed against the backdrop of a market dominated by Si-based solar cells.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)(4) (CZTSSe) has received considerable attention as a material capable of driving the development of low-cost and high performance photovoltaics. Its high absorption coefficient, optimal band gap, and non-toxic, naturally abundant elemental constituents give it a number of advantages over most thin film absorber materials. In this manuscript, we discuss the current status of CZTSSe photovoltaics, and provide a comprehensive review of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanocrystal (NCs)-based fabrication methods and solar cell characteristics. The focus will be on the relevant synthetic chemistry, film deposition, and the production of high efficiency photovoltaic devices. Various colloidal synthesis routes are currently used to form the highest quality CZTSSe film from the nanocrystals with controllable phase, size, shape, composition, and surface ligands. A variety of recipes are summarized for producing nanocrystal inks that are appropriate for forming CZTSSe absorber materials with a wide range of controllable optoelectronic properties. Deposition and post-processing, such as annealing and selenization treatments, play an important role in defining the phase and structure of the resulting material. Various film treatment strategies are outlined here, and their resulting material quality, device performance, and dominant photovoltaic loss mechanisms are discussed. Suggestions regarding needed improvements and future research directions are provided based on the current field of available literature.

Abstract:In this review, we highlight the role of halogenated compounds in the colloidal synthesis of nanostructured semiconductors. Halogen-containing metallic salts used as precursors and halogenated hydrocarbons used as ligands allow stabilizing different shapes and crystal phases, and enable the formation of colloidal systems with different dimensionality. We summarize recent reports on the tremendous influence of these compounds on the physical properties of nanocrystals, like field-effect mobility and solar cell performance and outline main analytical methods for the nanocrystal surface control.

Abstract:By engineering chemically identical but structurally distinct materials into intricate and sophisticated polytypic nanostructures, which often surpass their pure phase objects and even produce novel physical and chemical properties, exciting applications in the fields of photovoltaics, electronics and photocatalysis can be achieved. In recent decades, various methods have been developed for synthesizing a library of polytypic nanocrystals encompassing IV, III-V and II-VI polytypic semiconductors. The exceptional performances of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals have been observed, making them highly promising candidates for applications in photonics and electronics. However, achieving high-precision control over the morphology, composition, crystal structure, size, homojunctions, and periodicity of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanostructures remains a significant synthetic challenge. This review article offers a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the synthesis and control of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals using colloidal synthetic strategies. Starting from a concise introduction on the crystal structures of metal chalcogenides, the subsequent discussion delves into the colloidal synthesis of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, followed by an in-depth exploration of the key factors governing polytypic structure construction. Subsequently, we provide comprehensive insights into the physical properties of polytypic metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, which exhibit strong correlations with their applications. Thereafter, we emphasize the significance of polytypic nanostructures in various applications, such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, transistors, thermoelectrics, stress sensors, and the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Finally, we present a summary of the recent advancements in this research field and provide insightful perspectives on the forthcoming challenges, opportunities, and future research directions.

Thiol-Free Synthesis of Bright Near-Infrared-Emitting Ag 2 S Nanocrystals through Heterovalent-Metal Decoration for Ecofriendly Solar Cells

Abstract:Environmentally friendly Ag2S nanocrystals (NCs) show potential applications as light-absorbing semiconductors for thin-film photovoltaics or biological taggants. However, thiol ligands are generally involved during the synthesis of Ag2S NCs to maintain colloidal stability, hindering postexchange of these crystal-bound thiolate ligands. Here, using common non-thiol ligands (oleic acid and oleylamine), we develop a general strategy of surface heterovalent-metal (Bi3+, Ga3+, In3+, Sb3+, and Zn2+) decoration to synthesize colloidal cation-rich Ag2S NCs achieving a high photoluminescence quantum yield up to 22% at ∼1230 nm. Density functional theory calculations reveal the heterovalent-metal cations exhibit stronger orbital coupling to the ligands than Ag atoms, and thus stronger binding affinity, resulting in reduced dynamic surface ligands to produce compact cation-rich Ag2S NCs with high solubility in nonpolar solvents. We further show that surface-decorated Bi atoms can accumulate the electron charge density, leading to surface-related band-edge emissions with increased electron–hole separation and prolonged exciton lifetimes of the Bi-decorated Ag2S NCs, which are desirable for many optoelectronic conversion applications. Using a 40 nm-thick light-absorbing layer of Bi-decorated Ag2S NCs, the optimized solar cells show a short-circuit current density of 18.6 mA cm–2 and a power conversion efficiency of over 4%.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) hold great promise as building blocks in solar technologies owing to their remarkable photostability and adjustable properties through the rationale involving size, atomic composition of core and shell, shapes, and surface states. However, most high‐performing QDs in solar conversion contain hazardous metal elements, including Cd and Pb, posing significant environmental risks. Here, we present a comprehensive review of heavy‐metal‐free colloidal QDs for solar technologies, including photovoltaic devices, solar‐to‐chemical fuel conversion, and luminescent solar concentrators. We analyze emerging synthetic strategies to optimize the optical properties by tuning the energy band structure and manipulating charge dynamics within the QDs and at the QDs/charge acceptors interfaces. We also provide a comparative analysis of different synthetic methods, discuss structure‐property relationships in these materials, and correlate them with the performance of solar devices. We conclude with an outlook on challenges and opportunities for future work, including machine learning‐based design, sustainable synthesis, and new surface/interface engineering.
