Abstract:In this work, the coexistence of In(III) and K(I) induces a rapid crystal growth of single crystals of heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [In0.5K(3-qlc)Cl-1.5(H2O)(0.5)](2n) (1) and [InK(ox)(2)-(H2O)(4)](n) (2) (3-Hqlc = quinoline-3-carboxylic acid; H(2)ox = oxalic acid). Remarkably, with the help of achiral 3-Hqlc, compound 1 represents the chiral interpenetrating p-block heterometallic MOFs with helical chain along the 43 screw axis, while compound 2 possesses a highly symmetric (4,4,4)-connected topology network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(2).8(3).10))(4(2).8(4)). Consideration of two different organic ligands viz. 3-Hqlc and H(2)ox constructed heterometallic MOFs with different geometrical dimensions of unit cells, their influences on luminescence arid photovoltaic properties are studied. Compounds 1 and 2 show tunable luminescence from blue to yellow and white by varying the temperature in the solid state. Encouraged by the UV visible absorption and HOMO-LUMO energy states matched for sensitizing TiO2, the two compounds are employed in combination with N719 in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to compensate for absorption in the region of ultraviolet and blue-violet. Under optimized conditions, the DSSCs devices using cosensitizers of 1/N719 and 2/N719 display an overall conversion efficiency of 8.07% and 7.42%, which is 22.09% and 12.25% higher than that of a device solely sensitized by N719 (6.61%). Consequently, both of the two compounds could serve as excellent photosensitizers and application in luminescence sensors and DSSCs.

Abstract:Three metal-organic complexes Cd(HBIDC)(phen)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Cd(BIC)(Phen)](n) (2) and {[Eu(HBIDC)(H2BIDC)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) H2O) 1 (3) (H3BIDC=benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2BIC=benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With similar reaction conditions, reactions of the same ligand with different metal cations selected from different blocks (d-block and f-block) result in different coordination modes of carboxylate groups and final frameworks of complexes 1 and 3. The decarboxylation was observed in complex 2 and resulted in the formation of BIC2- ligand. Complexes 1-3 have intense fluorescent emissions at room temperature in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in the solid-state, which indicate they are potential fluorescence materials. Abstract:A novel europium complex, Eu(Hdinic)(dinic)(H2O)(5) center dot 4H(2)O ( dinic = 2,5- pyridinedicarboxylic acid), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction methods. The complex has a mononuclear molecular structure, is monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 13.877( 5), b = 9.632( 3), c = 32.991( 11) angstrom, beta = 93.414( 4)degrees, V = 4402( 2) angstrom(3), D-c = 1.948 Mg m(-3), Z = 8, F(000) = 2576, R-1 = 0.0320. Its photophysical properties are reported.

Abstract:Novel 3D Lu2O2S:Eu3+ microstructures were successfully synthesized by a simple and effective solvothermal method followed by a subsequent calcination process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that the precursors have been thoroughly transformed into lutetium oxysulfide with high crystallinity after calcination at 800°C. The field scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images show that the products are uniform and their morphologies are novel, just like two intertwined tetrahedrons slotted into each other. Furthermore, the obtained 3D Lu2O2S:Eu3+ architectures show strong red emission corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transition of the Eu3+ ions under ultraviolet (UV) excitation.

Abstract:Precise control over size and morphology of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is challenging but important for extending these hybrid materials to many more advanced applications, in particular for nanotechnology and device integration. Through exploring the reaction parameters during the synthesis of the Eu-MOFs, fascinating crystals morphologies, including urchin-like balls, straw-sheaf and nanocrystals have been obtained by solvothermal treatment. Details of the formation mechanism of the resulting crystal morphology were investigated. All samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, high resolution scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and thermal gravimetry. The experimental results show that the formation of Eu-MOF is extremely sensitive to the synthesis conditions, hence resulting in different morphologies. These well-arranged architectures exhibit red emission corresponding to the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light excitation, and the lifetime is determined to be about 0.663 ms

Abstract:Two lanthanide (III) complexes, {[Ln(stp)(H2O)3]·H2O}n (Ln=Tb (1), Eu (2); stp=2-sulfoterephthalate trianion), have been synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, thermogravimetric and single-crystal X-ray structure analyses. The Ln (Ln=Tb or Eu) atoms have nine coordination numbers with a distorted monocapped square-antiprismatic geometry. The stp ligands act as pentadentate ligands to link Ln (Ln=Tb or Eu) atoms into a two-dimensional layer and sensitize the Tb(III) or Eu(III) ions to exhibit the characteristic emission.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:The large-scale synthesis of the metal–organic framework Eu(1,3,5–BTC)·6H2O nanocrystallites with delicate morphologies such as sheaflike, butterflylike, and flowerlike superstructures composed of nanowires have been realized via a simple solution phase method at room temperature. Time-dependent experiments indicate that these superstructures were constructed by the splitting crystal growth mechanism, as has been noted in some minerals in nature. The synthetic parameters such as reaction time, concentration and molar ratio of reactants, surfactant, and reaction temperature all affected the morphology of the Eu(1,3,5–BTC)·6H2O architectures. These well-arranged architectures exhibit red emission corresponding to the 5D0 → 7F2 transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light excitation, and the lifetime is determined to be about 0.22 ms.

Abstract:The syntheses, characterization and luminescent properties of europium(III) and terbium(III) cryptates synthesized by [2+3] condensation of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine with 2,6-diformyl-4-R-phenol (R = Cl, F, tBu) in the presence of Eu3+ Or Tb3+ have been reported. The crystal structure of the euro-plum cryptate (R = Cl) shows that the coordination number of the Eu-III ion is nine and that a guest water molecule is encapsulated in the cavity. The cryptates have a high stability which confers good fluorescence properties in solution.

Abstract:Monoclinic Y-2(WO4)(3):Eu with three-dimensional hierarchical architectures were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method in ligand-free and chelating ligand-mediated processes, respectively. Microflowers assembled from two-dimensional nanoflakes were obtained in a surfactant- and template-free process, whereas microspheres with dandelion-like appearance assembled from one-dimensional nanoplates were observed upon the introduction of the appropriate amount of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) to the precursor. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), energy-dispersive spectra (EDS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the as-obtained products. It was found that the amount of ligand agent, reaction temperature and time, and type of organic additive have crucial influences on the morphology of the resulting microstructures. The possible formation mechanisms for different microstructures were put forward. The addition of EDTA significantly changed the reaction pathway due to the excellent chelating and capping ability of EDTA. A detailed investigation on the photoluminescence of Y-2(WO4)(3):Eu samples with flower-like, dandelion-like, and spindle microstructures indicates that the optical properties of these phosphors are strongly dependent on the morphology and size. Abstract:In this paper, we report on the luminescence of europium by directly exciting europiumions with visible light in aqueous medium. Upon replacing all the water molecules that coordinate around a central europium ion with a ditopic ligand 1,11-bis(2,6-dicarboxypyridin-4-yloxy)-3,6,9-trioxaundecane (L2EO4), the quenching from water molecules is efficiently eliminated, offering considerable europium emission. By stoichiometrically mixing with a positively charged block polyelectrolyte, the negatively charged L2EO4-Eu coordinating complex can be transformed into a coordination 'polymer', which simultaneously forms electrostatic micelles with further enhanced europium fluorescence emission, owing to the increased fraction of L2EO4-coordinated Eu(III) as revealed by the fluorescence lifetime measurements. This approach avoids the use of the antenna effect that often utilizes UV light as the irradiation source. We further use those micelles for bio-imaging, and for the first time demonstrate the use of directly excited Eu-containing nano-probes for in vivo fluorescence imaging in small animals under visible excitation. Although literature results have shown that the direct excitation of europium ions in water may lead to emissions in the presence of coordinating ligands, those emissions were too weak to be applied due to the remaining water molecules in the coordination sphere. Our work points out that the direct excitation of europium can generate considerable europium emission given that all the water molecules in the coordination sphere are excluded, which does not only greatly reduce tedious lab work in synthesizing antenna molecules, but also facilitates the application of europium in aqueous medium under visible light.
Chiral Lanthanide-Silver(I) Cluster-based Metal-Organic Frameworks Exhibiting Solvent Stability, and Tunable Photoluminescence

Abstract:Due to the lack of effective synthetic strategies, the preparation of chemically stable chiral Ag(I) cluster-based assembly materials remains challenging. Here, we have developed an approach to synthesize three pairs of chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) named L-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-L, Eu for 2-L, Tb for 3-L) and D-LnAg5-3D (Ln = Gd for 1-D, Eu for 2-D, Tb for 3-D) by employing a chiral Ag(I) cluster ({Ag5S6}) as node and Ln3+ ion as inorganic linker. Structural analysis revealed that the chiral ligands induced chirality through the entire structure, resulting in a chiral helix arrangement of the C3-symmetric chiral {Ag5S6} nodes and Ln3+ ions. These compounds showed high solvent stability in various polar organic solvents. The solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of compounds L-LnAg5-3D and D-LnAg5-3D exhibited obvious mirror symmetrical peaks. The emission spectra in solid state revealed that compound 1-L only exhibited the emission peak of {Ag5S6}, while compounds 2-L and 3-L exhibited overlapping peaks of Ln3+ and {Ag5S6} at different excitation wavelengths. This demonstrates the tunable photoluminescence from {Ag5S6} to Ln3+ by introducing different Ln3+ ions and manipulating the excitation wavelengths. The study underscores the enhanced stability of Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs achieved through the incorporation of Ln3+ ions and establishes chiral Ln-Ag(I) cluster-based MOFs as promising candidates for advanced materials with tunable photoluminescence.

Abstract:Pure and Eu3+-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS) crystallites were synthesized through a hydrothermal method using water and ethanol (W/E) as the solvent. The powder samples have been characterized systematically using a number of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The band gap of ZnS and ZnS/xEu3+ was calculated according to absorption spectroscopy, and an obvious red shift with the increasing molar fraction of Eu3+-doped ions was found. The luminescent mechanism of ZnS was explored by measuring the emission spectra of ZnS with different ratios of Zn and S. The emission spectra of ZnS/xEu3+ included the characteristic emission peak of ZnS and Eu3+ ions. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of the ZnS/xEu3+ sample varied with the molar fraction of Eu3+ ions. The emission intensity and morphology changed with the ratio of W/E in the process of hydrothermal reaction. The results indicate that the luminescence of the ZnS crystallite can be modulated by doping a certain amount of Eu3+ ions, changing the ratio of Zn and S, or adding moderate ethanol as the reaction medium.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence materials based on emissive Eu (III) complexes have attracted considerable attention in 3D-displays and bioresponsive imaging. In this work, we design and report the syntheses of a pair of chiral carboxylic-containing 2,2'-bipyridine ligands ((+)-L and (-)-L). Through reaction with highly emissive beta-diketone Eu (III) complexes [Eu (TTA)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O (TTA =2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone), a couple of chiral dinuclear Eu(III) enantiomers, [Eu-2((+)-L)(2)(TTA)(2)(C2H5OH)(2)] ((+)-1) and [Eu-2((-)-L)(2)(TTA)(2)(C2H5OH)(2)] ((-)-1), were prepared, and the structure of (+)-1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The absorption, emission and chiroptical properties of (+)-1 and (-)-1 were investigated, and distinct CPL activities were clearly detected. CCDC: 1916754, (+)-1.

Lanthanide-containing photoluminescent materials: from hybrid hydrogel to inorganic nanotubes.

Abstract:Functional photoluminescent materials are emerging as a fascinating this work, luminescent organic-in-organic hybrid hydrogels are facilely designed through supramolecular self-assembly of sodium cholate, and lanthanide ions such as Eu3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+/Tb3+. Fluorescence microscopy and TEM visualization demonstrates the existence of spontaneously self-assembled nanofibers and 3D networks in hybrid hydrogel. Photoluminescence enhancement of lanthanide ions is realized through coordination with cholate and co-assembly into 1D nanofibers, which can successfully shield the Eu3+ from being quenched by water. The photoluminescence emission intensity of a hybrid hydrogel exhibits strong dependence on europium/cholate molar ratio, with maximum emission appearing at a stoichiometry of 1:3. Further-more, the emission color of a lanthanide-cholate hydrogel can be tuned by utilizing different lanthanide ions or co-doping ions. Moreover, photoluminescent lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are synthesized by means of a self-templating approach based on lanthanide-cholate supramolecular hydrogels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are prepared in solution under mild conditions.

Abstract:Using the chiral ligands Lss (+)-4,5-pinene bipyridine and L-RR (-)-4,5-pinene bipyridine (Scheme 1), two novel Eu(III)-based complexes with the formula [Eu(DBM)(3)L] (L-SS in 1, L-RR in 2, DBM = dibenzoylmethanate) have been successfully synthesized and characterized by X-ray single crystal determination and spectroscopic methods. The crystal structure analysis of 1 and 2 reveal that they crystallize in the chiral space group P2(1) of the monoclinic system. The central Eu(III) ion is eight-coordinated in a geometrical environment intermediate between a square antiprism and a dodecahedron. The CD spectra reflect that complexes 1 and 2 are enantiomers. Abstract:Due to the wide potential application in the fields of sensing, lighting materials, and optical⁻electrical multifunctional devices, rare earth complex hybrid materials have been studied extensively over the past decades. A poly(ionic liquid)/mesoporous-based hybrid system which has been functionalized by the covalently linked europium complexes was reported here. Through surface modification with a coupling agent bearing an vinyl group, MCM-41 was chosen as the carrier matrix for poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) and europium compounds, and based on that, novel luminescent hybrid materials were prepared by confining the ionic liquid and europium complexes into the inorganic Si⁻O frameworks. The resulting organic/inorganic materials are chemically bonded hybrids which show good photoluminescent properties such as broad excitation spectra, line-like emission spectra, and long luminescence lifetimes. The PILs/MCM-41/Eu3+ hybrid reported here is a rare earth multifunctional material which is believed to have potential applications in the field of optical⁻electrical materials.
