Abstract:<p>Chemically doped graphene materials are fascinating because these have different desirable attributes with possible synergy. The inert and gapless nature of graphene can be changed by adding a small number of heteroatoms to substitute carbon in the lattice. The doped material may display superior catalytic activities; durable, fast, and selective sensing; improved magnetic moments; photoresponses; and activity in chemical reactions. In the current review, recent advances are covered in chemically doped graphene. First, the different types of heteroatoms, their bonding configurations, and briefly their properties are discussed. This is followed by the description of various synthesis and analytical methods essential for assessing the characteristics of heterographene with specific focus on the selected graphene materials of different dopants (particularly, single dopants, including N, B, S, P, first three halogens, Ge, and Ga, and codopants, such as N/O), and more importantly, up‐to‐date applications enabled by the intentional doping. Finally, outlook and perspectives section review the existing challenges, future opportunities, and possible ways to improve the graphitic materials. The goal is to update and inspire the readers to establish novel doped graphene with valuable properties and for current and futuristic applications.</p>

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene has attracted increasing attentions because of the significantly enhanced properties in physic, chemistry, biology and material science, as compared with those of pristine graphene. By date, N-doped graphene has opened up an exciting new field in the science and technology of two-dimensional materials. From the viewpoints of chemistry and materials, this article presents an overview on the recent progress of N-doped graphene, including the typical synthesis methods, characterization techniques, and various applications in energy fields. The challenges and perspective of N-doped graphene are also discussed. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further development and practical applications of N-doped graphene.

Abstract:Graphene is the basic building block of 0D fullerene, 1D carbon nanotubes, and 3D graphite. Graphene has a unique planar structure, as well as novel electronic properties, which have attracted great interests from scientists. This review selectively analyzes current advances in the field of graphene bioapplications. In particular, the biofunctionalization of graphene for biological applications, fluorescence-resonance-energy-transfer-based biosensor development by using graphene or graphene-based nanomaterials, and the investigation of graphene or graphene-based nanomaterials for living cell studies are summarized in more detail. Future perspectives and possible challenges in this rapidly developing area are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphene doping principally commenced to compensate for its inert nature and create an appropriate bandgap. Doping of 3D graphene has emerged as a topic of interest because of attempts to combine its large available surface area-arising from its interconnected porous architecture-with superior catalytic, structural, chemical, and biocompatible characteristics that can be induced by doping. In light of the latest developments, this review provides an overview of the scalable chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-based growth of doped 3D graphene materials as well as their applications in various contexts, such as in devices used for energy generation and gas storage and biosensors. In particular, single- and multielement doping of 3D graphene by various dopants (such as nitrogen (N), boron (B), sulfur (S) and phosphorous (P)), the doping configurations of the resultant materials, an overview of recent developments in the field of CVD, and the influence of various parameters of CVD on graphene doping and 3D morphologies are focused in this paper. Finally, this report concludes the discussion by mentioning the existing challenges and future opportunities of these developing graphitic materials, intending to inspire the unveiling of more exciting functionalized 3D graphene morphologies and their potential properties, which can hopefully realize many possible applications.

Abstract:Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) can produce large‐area graphene films with fine scalability and controllability, and graphene doping films have become an important pathway for realizing their desired applications. In this review, the aim is to summarize the strategies for graphene doping and to compare doping performance including doping‐induced defects and scattering, as well as doping stability and uniformity. Graphene films have been regarded as potential materials for future applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Among various synthetic approaches, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach can produce large‐area graphene films with excellent scalability, controllability, and quality. Graphene doping, that is capable of improving carrier concentration and shifting the Fermi level position of graphene, has become an important pathway for realizing its desired applications. Physical adsorption of dopants on graphene surface can dope the graphene system through surface charge transfer and preserve the graphene lattice; however, the low doping stability strongly hinders its applications. The substitutional doping can achieve fine doping stability by incorporating heteroatoms, such as nitrogen and boron, into graphene lattice, but suffers from low carrier mobility owing to the presence of defects and disorders. In this review, the aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of application‐related doping performance including doping stability, doping uniformity, carrier concentration, carrier mobility, electrical conductivity, and optical transparency. The aim of the review is also to provide an outlook for future doping techniques of CVD graphene films toward various applications.

Abstract:Graphene, as a steady two dimensional (2D) carbon material, possesses intriguing physical and chemical properties, which arouses great interests of scientists for its applications in enormous fields. In particular, graphene and graphene oxide have been widely used for drug delivery and DNA detection based on π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. Besides, graphene with fluorescent molecules or nanoparticles and graphene quantum dots have also been frequently applied as fluorescent probe. In this article, advances of graphene and graphene oxide on biomedical applications will be highlighted from the perspective of biomolecular interaction, cell imaging, drug delivery, and toxicity.

Abstract:This article is a comprehensive review on the synthesis, characterization, functionalization, toxicity/biocompatibility, and potential of graphene materials in biomedical application. It critically discusses the typical synthesis methods to fabricate graphene materials suited for biomedical applications, followed by a range of structural and functional characterization techniques to characterize the obtained graphene materials. The challenges, potential solutions, and perspectives are also discussed. Since its discovery in 2004, graphene is increasingly applied in various fields owing to its unique properties. Graphene application in the biomedical domain is promising and intriguing as an emerging 2D material with a high surface area, good mechanical properties, and unrivalled electronic and physical properties. This review summarizes six typical synthesis methods to fabricate pristine graphene (p‐G), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), followed by characterization techniques to examine the obtained graphene materials. As bare graphene is generally undesirable in vivo and in vitro, functionalization methods to reduce toxicity, increase biocompatibility, and provide more functionalities are demonstrated. Subsequently, in vivo and in vitro behaviors of various bare and functionalized graphene materials are discussed to evaluate the functionalization effects. Reasonable control of dose (<20 mg kg−1), sizes (50–1000 nm), and functionalization methods for in vivo application are advantageous. Then, the key biomedical applications based on graphene materials are discussed, coupled with the current challenges and outlooks of this growing field. In a broader sense, this review provides a comprehensive discussion on the synthesis, characterization, functionalization, evaluation, and application of p‐G, GO, and rGO in the biomedical field, highlighting their recent advances and potential.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Due to quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs have excellent properties, attracting extensive attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, and other interdisciplinary sciences. In this review, we aim to present a comprehensive view on the synthesis of GQDs for biological applications. We highlight potential methods like acid oxidation, hydrothermal and solvothermal reactions, microwave-assisted methods, electrochemical oxidation, as well as pyrolysis and carbonization for the successful preparation of GQDs. Meanwhile, four representative types of biomedical application based on GQDs, bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and antimicrobial materials, are introduced and discussed in detail. This work will be very useful for quickly gaining knowledge and experience for synthesizing various GQDs, and developing advanced strategies for creating novel functional GQD-based nanomaterials for further applications in biomedicine, materials science, analytical science, and optical nanodevices.

Abstract:Graphene, with its excellent physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, holds tremendous potential for a wide variety of biomedical applications. As research on graphene-based nanomaterials is still at a nascent stage due to the short time span since its initial report in 2004, a focused review on this topic is timely and necessary. In this feature review, we first summarize the results from toxicity studies of graphene and its derivatives. Although literature reports have mixed findings, we emphasize that the key question is not how toxic graphene itself is, but how to modify and functionalize it and its derivatives so that they do not exhibit acute/chronic toxicity, can be cleared from the body over time, and thereby can be best used for biomedical applications. We then discuss in detail the exploration of graphene-based nanomaterials for tissue engineering, molecular imaging, and drug/gene delivery applications. The future of graphene-based nanomaterials in biomedicine looks brighter than ever, and it is expected that they will find a wide range of biomedical applications with future research effort and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY), a new kind of two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, has abundant chemical bonds, a highly π-conjugated structure, uniformly distributed pores, a large surface area, and good biocompatibility and has been applied in drug delivery, biosensing, antibacterial processes, and cancer therapy. Herein, this review is intended to provide an introduction of current advances in bioapplications of GDY, which covers the synthetic methods, structure and properties of GDY, and its application in antimicrobial processes, cancer therapy, biosensing, and bioimaging. Finally, we provide a perspective on future development in research relevant to GDY. We believe that this review can provide meaningful assistance for breakthroughs and innovations in the field of GDY.

Abstract:Monolayer graphene is a two-dimensional material with fascinating electrical and optical properties that has brought great possibilities and challenges to chemists. The possibilities include the many applications in which graphene could be exploited, and the challenges involve optimizing synthetic strategies and manipulating the structure and properties so that graphene can be used in those applications. Here, we cover a portion of the recent progress toward using chemical techniques to render graphene available for incorporation into electronic and optical devices. With top-down and bottom-up strategies, the geometry and thickness of graphene have been well-tuned. The methods for producing structure-doped materials, such as nitrogen doping and h-BNC hybrid structures, are discussed along with the properties of those doped materials. Finally, covalent functionalization of graphene's surfaces and edges, such as hydrogenation and the diazonium and azide reactions, will be discussed as they have become powerful tools to modify the properties of graphene.

Abstract:Graphene, as a rising star in the field of nanomaterials, possesses a unique planar structure and exceptional electronic, mechanical, and optical properties. The material has attracted tremendous interest not only for its intrinsic properties but also promising application opportunities in a wide range of technologies and markets. This review specifically summarizes recent research advancements of graphene in the areas of biotechnology and biomedicine. The bio-application opportunities lie in the unique attributes of graphene, i.e., (1) its nano-scale structure that allows for bio-compatibility, (2) biofunctionalization of graphene for biological recognition, (3) its mechanical, electronic and optical properties for bioimaging and external stimulus driven therapeutics, and (4) its functionalities for tissue and genetic engineering. The review mainly highlights eight subjects including (1) biocompatibility, cytotoxicity and biofunctionalization, (2) antibacterial activity, (3) biosensing and immunosensing, (4) bioimaging, (5) genetic engineering, (6) drug delivery, (7) cancer phototherapy, and (8) tissue engineering. Perspectives and future challenges in this rapidly developing area are also discussed.

Abstract:A complete review is presented about the fabrication of laser induced graphene (LIG), with particular focus on the doping of LIG with heteroatoms and nanoparticles for its property modification. Doped LIG applications with improved performance are mainly highlighted, including sensors, supercapacitors, catalysts, batteries, antimicrobial effects, and other applications. Finally, the future challenges of doped LIG are discussed. Laser‐induced graphene (LIG) has attracted extensive attention owing to its facile preparation of graphene and direct engraving patterns for devices. Various applications are demonstrated such as sensors, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, batteries, antimicrobial, oil and water separation, solar cells, and heaters. In recent years, doping has been employed as a significant strategy to modulate the properties of LIG and thereby improve the performance of LIG devices. Due to the patternable manufacture, controllable morphologies, and the synergistic effect of doped atoms and graphene, the doped LIG devices exhibit a high sensitivity of sensing, pseudocapacitance performance, and biological antibacterial. This paper reviews the latest novel research progress of heteroatom and nanoparticles doped LIG in synthesis, properties, and applications. The fabrications of LIG and typical doping approaches are presented. Special attention is paid to two doping processes of LIG: the one‐step laser irradiation method and the two‐step laser modification consisting of deposition, drop‐casting, and duplicated laser pyrolysis. Doped LIG applications with improved performance are mainly highlighted. Taking advantage of doped LIG's properties and device performances will provide excellent opportunities for developing artificial intelligence, data storage, energy, health, and environmental applications.

Abstract:Graphdiyne is a new kind of two-dimensional carbonaceous material that is composed of sp and sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms. The highly conjugated and adjustable carbocyclic molecular structure gives it special physicochemical properties, which also facilitate its functional modification and wide application. In the past ten years, there has been conducted extensive theoretical and experimental research on graphdiyne, and a series of important advances has been made in many fields. The properties of graphdiyne are briefly introduced, and its main synthesis methods with different morphologies are summarized, including Glaser-Hay cross-coupling, chemical vapor deposition, van der Waals epitaxial growth, explosion, interface-confined synthesis and bipolar electrochemical method. Theoretical calculations and experimental studies on non-metal/metal atom doping and chemical group modification are summarized, and their corresponding effects on the graphdiyne properties are reviewed. Finally, urgent problems and challenges in the development of graphdiyne are discussed. This review provides fundamental information on graphdiyne and guidance for the design of its functionalized forms.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanomaterials have emerged as a novel type of materials with exceptional physicochemical properties and numerous applications in various areas. In this review, we summarize recent advances in studying interactions between graphene and biosystems. We first provide a brief introduction on graphene and its derivatives, and then discuss on the toxicology and biocompatibility of graphene, including the extracellular interactions between graphene and biomacromolecules, cellular studies of graphene, and in vivo toxicological effects. Next, we focus on various graphene-based practical applications in antibacterial materials, wound addressing, drug delivery, and water purification. We finally present perspectives on challenges and future developments in these exciting fields.
