Abstract:Magnetic metamaterials consist of magnetic resonators smaller in size than their excitation wavelengths. Their unique electromagnetic properties were characterized by the effective media theory at the early stage. However, the effective media model does not take into account the interactions between magnetic elements; thus, the effective properties of bulk metamaterials are the result of the "averaged effect" of many uncoupled resonators. In recent years, it has been shown that the interaction between magnetic resonators could lead to some novel phenomena and interesting applications that do not exist in conventional uncoupled metamaterials. In this paper, we will give a review of recent developments in magnetic plasmonics arising from the coupling effect in metamaterials. For the system composed of several identical magnetic resonators, the coupling between these units produces multiple discrete resonance modes due to hybridization. In the case of a system comprising an infinite number of magnetic elements, these multiple discrete resonances can be extended to form a continuous frequency band by strong coupling. This kind of broadband and tunable magnetic metamaterial may have interesting applications. Many novel metamaterials and nanophotonic devices could be developed from coupled resonator systems in the future.
Multiplexing-oriented nonlinear plasmon-assisted MoS$_2$ metasurfaces driven by the quasi bound states in the continuum

Abstract: Rapid progress in nanofabrication techniques has enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces. However, the research of nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces is still rather superficial, due to the lack of a clear physical picture to depict their working mechanisms. Here we provide a comprehensive theoretical study on the properties of nonlinear plasmon-assisted MoS$_2$ hybrid metasurfaces that originate from the bound states in the continuum (BICs), from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. New mechanisms to identify and create the trapped resonances that fueled by BICs are elaborated. By exploiting the sharp resonances of light-capturing modes, we demonstrate that the optical nonlinearity can be significantly boosted and smartly tuned. Utilizing both the plasmon-polariton resonance and plasmonic quasi-BICs, ultra-high nonlinear susceptibilities at different wavelength windows can be obtained at the same time. This wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear metasurfaces have many potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization, quantum information, etc, where multiple color signals need to be nonlinearly processed simultaneously. This work will also raise deeper exploration and lead new directions for experimental plasmonic BICs.
Magnetic Plasmon Modes Introduced by the Coupling Effect in Metamaterials

Abstract:The propagation property of microwave through chiral metamaterial based on a magnetic dimer is studied experimentally. Our results show two resonance peaks are obtained in the transmission spectrum, and they origin from the hybridization effect of magnetic resonance modes in this system. An optical activity is also observed in the transmission wave. Various elliptical polarization states appear in the transmission, and the polarization state changes dramatically around the magnetic resonance frequency: the transmitted wave becomes elliptically polarized with the major polarization axis almost perpendicular to that of the liner incident wave, and the ellipse is very compressed though it is not exactly the linear polarization. This coupled magnetic dimer system provides doable method of the designing of the tunable optically active medium and devices.

Abstract:The excitation of optical magnetic plasmons in chiral metallic nanostructures based on a magnetic dimer is studied theoretically. Hybridization of the magnetic plasmon modes and a type of optical activity is demonstrated at near-infrared frequencies. A linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is shown to change its polarization after passing through an array of magnetic dimers. The polarization of the transmitted wave rotates counterclockwise at incident light frequencies corresponding to the low energy and clockwise at the high energy magnetic plasmon state. A metamaterial made of a large number of coupled magnetic dimers could be utilized as a tunable optically active medium with possible applications in optical elements and devices.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the coupling effects of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and magnetic dipole (MD) resonances in metamaterials, which are composed of an Ag nanodisk array and a SiO2 spacer on an Ag substrate. The periodicity of the Ag nanodisk array leads to the excitation of SPPs at the surface of the Ag substrate. The near-field plasmon interactions between individual Ag nanodisks and the Ag substrate form MD resonances. When the excitation wavelengths of SPPs are tuned to approach the position of MD resonances by changing the array period of Ag nanodisks, SPPs and MD resonances are coupled together into two hybridized modes, whose positions can be well predicted by a coupling model of two oscillators. In the strong coupling regime of SPPs and MD resonances, the hybridized modes exhibit an obvious anti-crossing, resulting into an interesting phenomenon of Rabi splitting. Moreover, the magnetic fields under the Ag nanodisks are greatly enhanced, which may find some potential applications, such as magnetic nonlinearity.

Abstract:The coupled magnetic plasmons (CMPs) has been investigated in an active system composed of coupled metamaterial and quantum dots. By introducing a full-quantum description of CMPs, the interaction Hamiltonian of the active system was obtained, through which the stimulated emission could be investigated. The results showed that the CMP amplification by the stimulated emission radiation could be achieved under certain conditions. This may be used to work as a CMP source in the integrated optics and nano-photonics.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetic resonant modes in the coupled nanosandwich (CSW) structure, which can be considered a metamolecule composed of two meta-atoms (nanosandwiches). The coupling between two nanosandwiches leads to two magnetic resonant modes, the split of the single magnetic resonant mode. Moreover, the coupling effect in a more complicated system that consists of two closely placed CSWs is studied, where four magnetic resonant modes with different phase relationships between meta-atoms are observed. It is shown that the interaction between CSWs leads to this secondary split of the magnetic resonant mode. We further consider a one-dimensional metacrystal formed by a chain of CSWs, and directly observe the magnetic plasmon (MP) bands through the Fourier transformation approach. Modifying both the thickness of the middle metal layer of CSWs and the spacing between CSWs, one can efficiently engineer the MP band, and even open a bandgap. Such a CSW chain can even work as a subwavelength waveguide, which may have potential applications in nano-optics and photonics. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Strong coupling between propagating surface plasmon polaritons and localized magnetic plasmon polaritons can significantly enhance the light–matter interaction at the nanoscale. In article 1700469, Shumin Xiao, Qinghai Song, and co-workers enhance the magnetic field of one-dimensional-grating-based optical metamaterials more than 500 times and demonstrate applications in highly sensitive optical sensors. As demonstrated on the back cover, this research can pave a new way to the development of sensors.

Abstract:We theoretically study the coupling of magnetic plasmon polaritons (MPPs) with propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a system composed of an array of metal nanowires close to a metal film with a dielectric spacer. Strong coupling between MPPs and SPPs is observed, manifested by the anticrossing behavior of the resonant positions in the reflection spectra. It creates narrow-band hybridized MPPs with Rabi-type splitting as large as 250 meV. Moreover, we also found that the coupling between the MPPs and the SPPs can be tailored by the period of the metal nanowire array to affect the magnetic response of the plasmonic structure. Above the resonant wavelength of the MPPs, coupling between two kinds of resonance modes can lead to a 20-fold enhancement of the magnetic fields in the dielectric spacer, as compared with the pure magnetic resonance upon the excitation of the hybridized MPPs, whereas below it, coupling cannot lead to a magnetic field enhancement. We suggest that this feature could offer a feasible way to achieve huge magnetic field enhancement at optical frequencies and hold promising potential applications in magnetic nonlinearity and sensors.

Abstract:The authors theoretically present a powerful method to enhance and modify the magnetic resonances in metamaterials by strongly coupling them to the optical modes of Fabry-PErot (FP) cavities. Strong coupling between magnetic plasmons (MPs) and optical cavity modes is observed, manifested by the large anticrossing of the resonant positions in the reflection spectra. It results in two branches of hybridized MP modes with a Rabi-type splitting as large as 78 meV. The maximal magnetic field intensity achieved in the metamaterials with an FP cavity is enhanced greatly and an enhancement factor > 3 is observed compared with that achieved by the bare metamaterials (without thin metallic mirror). This has the potential applications in the magnetic nonlinearity and magnetic sensors.

Abstract:Molecular plasmonics, the area which deals with the interactions between surface plasmons and molecules, has received enormous interest in fundamental research and found numerous technological applications. Plasmonic metamaterials, which offer rich opportunities to control the light intensity, field polarization, and local density of electromagnetic states on subwavelength scales, provide a versatile platform to enhance and tune light-molecule interactions. A variety of applications, including spontaneous emission enhancement, optical modulation, optical sensing, and photoactuated nanochemistry, have been reported by exploiting molecular interactions with plasmonic metamaterials. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the developments of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials. After a brief introduction to the optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials and relevant fabrication approaches, we discuss light-molecule interactions in plasmonic metamaterials in both weak and strong coupling regimes. We then highlight the exploitation of molecules in metamaterials for applications ranging from emission control and optical modulation to optical sensing. The role of hot carriers generated in metamaterials for nanochemistry is also discussed. Perspectives on the future development of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials conclude the review. The use of molecules in combination with designer metamaterials provides a rich playground both to actively control metamaterials using molecular interactions and, in turn, to use metamaterials to control molecular processes.

Abstract:We studied theoretically the diffraction coupling of magnetic resonances in metamaterials consisting of a planar rectangular array of metal rod pairs with a dielectric spacer. A narrow-band mixed mode was observed due to a strong interaction between magnetic resonances in individual pairs of metal rods and an in-plane propagating collective surface mode arising from the array periodicity. Upon the excitation of this mixed mode, a five-fold enhancement of magnetic field in the dielectric spacer was achieved as compared with the purely magnetic resonance. It was also found that only a collective surface mode with its magnetic field parallel to the array plane could mediate the excitation of such a mixed mode.

Abstract:Concentric spoof surface plasmon hybridization in the microwave frequency is physically realized with subwavelength plasmonic metamaterials. The hybridization is generated with two concentric spoof localized surface plasmon (LSP) particles, where the overlap of the two spoof LSP particles could be tuned to manipulate the resonance. Such spoof plasmon hybridization could increase the Q factor effectively up to 965, and decrease the electric dimension of the particle down to 1/7 wavelength. The coupled-resonator circuit theory is applied to analyze the interaction mechanism of the structure with strong electric and magnetic coupling. Near electric-field distributions are mapped in the simulation and experiment to characterize the resonant property. Both the bonding mode and the antibonding mode are observed. A free space measurement system is adopted to improve the measurement of the spoof LSP resonant spectra.

Strong and tunable coupling between antiferromagnetic magnons and surface plasmons

Abstract:Surface plasmons are the collective electron excitations in metallic systems and the associated electromagnetic wave usually has the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. On the other hand, spin waves are the spin excitations perpendicular to the equilibrium magnetization and are usually circularly polarized in a ferromagnet. The direct coupling of these two modes is difficult due to the difficulty of matching electromagnetic boundary conditions at the interface of magnetic and non-magnetic materials. Here, we overcome this challenge by utilizing the linearly polarized spin waves in antiferromagnets (AFM) and show that a strong coupling between AFM magnons and surface plasmons can be realized in a hybrid 2D material/AFM structure, featuring a clear anticrossing spectrum at resonance. The coupling strength, characterized by the gap of anticrossing at resonance, can be tuned by electric gating on 2D materials and be probed by measuring the two reflection minima in the reflection spectrum. Further, as a potential application, we show that plasmonic modes can assist the coupling of two well-separated AFMs over several micrometers, featuring symmetric and antisymmetric hybrid modes. Our results may open a new platform to study antiferromagnetic spintronics and its interplay with plasmonic photonics.

Abstract:By lifting metamaterials composed of periodic arrays of metallic nanodisk pairs to reduce the effect of substrate, we demonstrate theoretically the diffraction coupling phenomenon of magnetic plasmon (MP) resonances. A narrow-band hybridized mode is observed owing to the strong interactions between MP resonances in individual pairs of metallic nanodisks and a collective surface mode propagating in the array plane. When the hybridized mode is excited, a 5.6-fold enhancement of magnetic fields in nanodisk pairs is obtained as compared with the purely MP resonance. It is also found that for such a diffraction coupling, the magnetic field of the collective surface mode must be parallel to the magnetic moment induced in the paired metallic nanodisks. Our numerical results may find some promising potential applications, like magnetic nonlinearity and sensors.

Abstract:Single and double circular split ring hexamers are reported by Z. Fang and co-workers on page 2177 to suppress the radiation loss of plasmonic Fano resonance. With the illumination of azimuthally polarized light, the interference between a broad collective magnetic mode and a dark magnetic mode within each split ring generates a pure magnetic Fano resonance. The suggested configuration with narrower line-shape magnetic Fano resonance has significant applications in low-loss sensing and may serve as an elementary building block for optical metamaterials.

Abstract:The understanding of strong coupling between local restricted electromagnetic field of cavity and surface-plasmon (SP) on the metal surface lays the groundwork for many photonic applications. However, much of the fundamental photophysical properties underlying this performance such as how this strong coupling is induced by these two components, namely, the SP modes and cavity modes have remained unknown. Here, we present a study of a hybrid plasmon-modulated coupled system with Rabi splitting energy at 336 meV, and the coupled hybrid states are highly sensitive to the prosperity of SP mode which is induced by morphology of inlaid grating surfaces.
