Abstract:MXenes are gaining attention due to their unique 2D layered structures, but face limitations like restacking. Transition metal sulfides (TMS) are promising for energy applications, yet suffer from poor conductivity and volume changes during ion processes, leading to capacity fading. Therefore, we borrowed the structure of ZIF-L with a large specific surface area to synthesize TMS. Constructing heterostructures with metallic conductive MXenes and electrochemically active TMSs emerges as a promising strategy to enhance electrochemical performance and address these challenges. In the present paper, Ti 3 C 2 T X Mxene is successfully combined with TMS by a facile in-situ reaction. Based on the electrochemical analysis, Mxene/CoS/NF heterostructure electrode presents an area capacitance of 0.91 mAh/cm 2 , which is 9.78 times of that of pure MXene at a current density of 2 mA/cm 2 . Impressively, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor retains a commendable 85.21 % of its original capacity even after 10,000 cycles. The power density of the assembled supercapacitor is 49.15 mW cm -3 , and the energy density is 1.42 mWh cm -3 . This underscores a practical and effective avenue for advancing research on Mxene-based electrodes.

Abstract:The current application of gel electrolytes in energy storage fails to meet the demand for higher ion transport and excellent mechanical properties due to the low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to graft oligomer polyetheramine on the surface of MXene to achieve a transformation from solid MXene to MXene nanofluid avoiding oxidation and aggregation of MXene, and then it is introduced to gel electrolytes providing ion transport channels and mechanical properties. The synergistic effect on the core of MXene and the canopy of polyetheramine produce Lewis acid-base interactions on electrolyte ions, which not only promote electrolyte dissociation but also provides ion transport path-way. The experiment and molecular dynamics simulations show that the ionic diffusion ability of electrolyte ions is enhanced, because the MXene and polyetheramine promote electrolyte dissociation and reduce the electrostatic interference between anions and cations. The specific capacity of the assembled supercapacitor is 114.28 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 current density, and the capacity retention rate is 91.30% after 3000 cycles. This work provides a new insight for fabricating high-performance devices. A novel MXene-based gel electrolyte is synthesized via the crosslinking reaction of acrylamide and MXene nanofluid with the canopy of polyetheramine. It exhibits excellent mechanical properties and a high ionic migration rate. The PAM/MXene-M2070 gel electrolyte demonstrates a high ionic diffusion coefficient based on the MXene nanofluid which promotes electrolyte dissociation and reduces the electrostatic interference between anions and cations. image

Abstract:Abstract Achieving rate‐capable and high mass‐loaded lithium/sodium storage plays a pivotal role in promoting real world applications of many emerging electrode materials. Herein, such an electrode material is reported made of Mo and Fe‐based polyoxometalates firmly bonded on MXene nanosheets through a mild in situ growth procedure. The polyoxometalate nanoparticles can efficiently prevent the restacking of the MXene nanosheets, enabling an electrolyte‐permeable architecture at high mass loadings while the metallic conductivity of MXenes allows rapid electron transfer contributing to the full exploration of the rich redox capability of polyoxometalates even at high rates. The optimal structure delivers a high capacity of 297 and 191 mA h g –1 at 1.0 A g –1 for lithium and sodium storage, respectively, even after a thousand of cycles. The kinetic analysis suggests high capacitive contributions of 81.6% and 67.4% for lithium and sodium uptake/release at 1.0 mV s –1 , respectively. Moreover, a decent capacity remains even after 13.5‐fold increase of loading mass. The lithium/sodium‐ion hybrid supercapacitors based on this composite deliver remarkable energy density and power capability. The results demonstrated in this work may offer an alternative selection of electrodes based on rationally designed polyoxometalates and MXenes.

Abstract:MXene is a new 2D transition metal carbide possessing metallic conductivity and hydrophilic surfaces. It has drawn widespread attention as a potential material for electrode use. However, the applications of MXene are limited by its property of low electrical capacity. In this paper, a novel MnO2/MXene composite is prepared by electrostatic self-assembly. Firstly, delaminated MnO2 nanosheets are obtained through the intercalation delamination of multilayered H-MnO2 in a cationic Gemini surfactant (Gem) solution, leading to a positively charged surface. Then, the positive MnO2 nanosheets are assembled on negative MXene nanosheets through electrostatic self-assembly to form a MnO2/MXene composite. The characterization results show that the MnO2 nanosheets are intimately assembled on the MXene nanosheets. As an electrode material, the MnO2/MXene composite displays a specific capacitance of 340 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), which is three times the performance of an MXene electrode. In addition, the MnO2/MXene electrode shows a high retention rate (90.3% retention at 10 A g(-1)) and good cycling life (87.6% of the initial specific capacitance is retained after 2000 cycles at 4 A g(-1)). The properties of the proposed composite are attributed to the excellent conductivity of MXene and the high specific capacitance of MnO2.
Physicochemical Double Protection Enables Stable MXene for High-Rate Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:MXene, with metallic conductivity, strong hydrophilicity, and rich chemistries, has been widely used as electrode material for energy storage. However, the notorious issues of aggregation and oxidation for MXene significantly inhibit its electrochemical performance and further wide application. Herein, a physicochemical double protection strategy is proposed to stabilize MXene in the hydrothermal process effectively. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), with the structure of a long chain and abundant O/N function groups, provides physical protection against agglomeration (steric effect) and chemical protection against oxidation (electron transfer) at the same time, contributing to the synthesis of MXene-based hybrids with high conductivity and fully exposed active sites. As proof of the concept, 2D MXene/Co9S8 nanohybrids with a scaly surface are fabricated and present impressive performance, especially rate performance for hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) with MoS2 as the counter electrode. The HSC demonstrates a high energy density of 111 Wh kg−1 at 845 W kg−1 and an excellent rate performance of 61 Wh kg−1 at 16.9 kW kg−1.

Abstract:AbstractMXenes have attracted great interests as supercapacitors due to their metallic conductivity, high density, and hydrophilic nature. Herein we report Ti3C2‐Cu/Co hybrids via molten salt etching in which the existence of metal atoms and their interactions with MXene via surficial O atoms were elucidated by XAFS for the first time. The electrochemical investigation of Ti3C2‐Cu electrode demonstrated the pseudocapacitive contribution of Cu and a splendid specific capacitance of 885.0 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 in 1.0 M H2SO4. Symmetric supercapacitor Ti3C2‐Cu//Ti3C2‐Cu was demonstrated with operating voltage of 1.6 V, areal capacitance of 290.5 mF cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, and stability over 10 000 cycles. It delivered an areal energy density of 103.3 μWh cm−2 at power density of 0.8 mW cm−2, based on which a supercapacitor pouch was fabricated. It provides deeper insights into the molten salt mechanism and strategies for designing MXene‐based materials for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:A new and universal synthetic strategy to hybridize metal oxides and conduct polymer nanocomposites has been proposed in this work. The simultaneous reaction process, which includes the generation of metal oxide layers, the oxidation polymerization of monomers, and the in situ formation of polymer-metal oxides sandwich structure is successfully realized and results in the unique hybrid polyaniline (PANI)-intercalated molybdenum oxide nanocomposites. The peroxomolybdate proved to play a dual role as the precursor of the inorganic hosts and the oxidizing agent for polymerization. The as-obtained hybrid nanocomposites present a flexible lamellar structure by oriented assembly of conductive PANI chains in the MoO(3) interlayer, and thus inherit excellent electrical performance and possess the potential of active electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage. Such uniform lamellar structure together with the anticipated high conductivity of the hybrid PANI/MoO(3) nanocomposites afford high specific capacitance and good stability during the charge-discharge cycling for supercapacitor application.

Abstract:<p>2D MXenes have attracted wide attention due to their unique chemical and physical properties. However, MXene nanosheets suffer from restacking and are susceptible to oxidation and consequently lose their functional properties which limits their applications. Thus, it is desirable to explore strategies to preserve MXene nanosheets and avoid oxidation. Herein, an effective strategy to produce MXene‐based conjugated microporous polymers (M‐CMPs) by covalently sandwiching MXene between CMPs using p‐iodophenyl functionalized MXene as templates is demonstrated. The as‐prepared M‐CMPs inherit the 2D architecture and high conductivity of MXene in terms of hierarchical porous structure and large specific surface area of CMPs. Moreover, the restacking and oxidation of MXene are simultaneously suppressed. Such advanced structural merits are critical for electrochemical energy storage. As‐proof‐of‐concept, the M‐CMPs are used as electrode materials for supercapacitors. As expected, with the improved structural advantages, M‐CMPs showcase superior capacitive performance than the MXene and CMPs counterparts. This work not only provides an opportunity for fabricating high performance MXene nanocomposites for energy storage/conversion but also has the potential to be generalized to resolve the challenges in the area of MXene engineering.</p>

Poly(o-phenylenediamine)-Decorated V4C3Tx MXene/Poly(o-phenylenediamine) Blends As Electrode Materials to Boost Storage Capacity for Supercapacitors and Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition-metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes),aspseudocapacitor materials, have attracted extensive attention in thefield of energy storage in recent years. However, the MXene surfaceis prone to oxidation and their layered structure is easy to stack,which limit their practical application. Here, we propose a facileand cost-effective strategy to fabricate a blend of poly-(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD)-decorated vanadium carbide MXene (N-V4C3T x ) and PoPD as electrodematerials to boost the storage capacity for supercapacitors and lithium-ionbatteries. N-V4C3T x nanosheets and PoPD nanoparticles were prepared by in situoxidant-free polymerization and redox methods, respectively. The electrochemicalperformance of the blend shows that the introduction of PoPD nanoparticlescan effectively improve the specific capacitance of N-V4C3T x . The N-V4C3T x /PoPD electrodeexhibits excellent specific capacitance of up to 676.5 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) for supercapacitor application. Comparedwith the V4C3T x -baseddevice (276.3 F g(-1)), the capacitance reaches upto 2.48 times enhancement. In addition, the N-V4C3T x /PoPD electrode also presentssatisfactory cyclic stability, and the retention rate can remain unchangedafter 10,000 cycles. As the electrode material for lithium-ion batteries,it also shows a high capacity of 561.2 mA h g(-1) at0.1 A g(-1), excellent rate performance, and cyclicstability. Our work broadens the application of MXenes and conductivepolymers as electrode materials in the field of energy storage andoffers a simple and effective strategy to improve the capacity andstability of the pristine MXene.

Abstract:The incorporation of Li2Mn3ZnO8 into Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites significantly enhances the electrochemical performance in supercapacitors and hydrogen evolution reactions. This integration leads to an increase in pseudocapacitance, improved electrochemical stability, and reduced overpotentials, rendering it highly suitable for efficient energy conversion applications. In this study, we combined Li2Mn3ZnO8 with MXene (Ti3C2Tx) to improve performance in supercapacitors and hydrogen evolution reactions. MXenes are known for their electrical conductivity and high surface area, making them promising for energy storage. The Ti3C2Tx/Li2Mn3ZnO8 composite electrode showed a specific capacitance of 182 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, outperforming individual Li2Mn3ZnO8 and MXene electrodes. Even after 3,000 cycles, the composite retained 71% of its initial capacitance. This research introduces innovative electrode materials for next‐generation supercapacitors and hydrogen evolution applications, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract:MXenes, a group of newly discovered two-dimensional (2D) materials since 2011, have been demonstrated with great potential in energy storage and conversion for their exceptional electrical conductivity, large surface areas, huge variety in composition and high flexibility. Up to now, the MXenes been synthesized always have surface terminal groups, such as -OH, -O or -F, which endows the materials with high hydrophilicity, rich surface chemistry to be further processed and yet challenges in restacking. As the electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties are highly relay on the material composition and surface chemical properties, hybridizing MXene with functional materials such as transitional metal chalcogenides (TMC) and transitional metal oxides (TMO) could dnot only prevents the restacking but also introduces synergistic functionalities into the composites. Therefore, elaborately design and synthesis of MXene/TMC or MXene/TMO architectures with tunable morphologies and enhanced electrochemical properties are of great importance. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive discussion on the MXene/TMC or MXene/TMO hybrids in the application for supercapacitors, secondary batteries and electrocatalysis. Specifically, the preparation methods for hybridization are presented firstly in five categories, where the characteristics of each method in relation to the structure and morphology of resulting product are compared. Advances on recent reported MXene/TMC and MXene/TMO hybrids in the application of supercapacitors, secondary batteries, and electrocatalysis are discussed in detail and their performances are also summarized. Finally, the major challenges and future prospects are also highlighted regarding improving electrode performances.

MXene-mediated Regulation of Local Electric Field Surrounding Polyoxometalate Nanoparticles for Improved Lithium Storage

Abstract:Due to their capability of reversibly accepting multi lithium ions, polyoxometalates (POMs) have been widely regarded as promising candidates for electrochemical lithium storage. Nevertheless, the insulating nature of POMs hinders fast migration kinetics of lithium within the bulk of these materials. Herein, we propose the introduction of a local electric field surrounding the POM nanoparticles consisting of Mn and V where the concomitant Coulomb forces can accelerate the migration of lithium ions. After rationally hybridizing POMs with MXene nanosheets, the imbalanced charge distribution emerging at their interface produces the local electric field, thereby leading to a 250-fold increase of lithium diffusion coefficient. In this regard, a capacitive contribution as high as 81.7% at 1.0 mV s −1 is observed. Moreover, the POM nanoparticles could densely assemble on the surface of MXene nanosheets, offering highly packed electrodes and thus high volumetric capacities. Due to the improved lithiumion transfer kinetics, the POMs/MXenes composites are paired with activated carbon to produce lithium-ion capacitors which could offer a high energy density of 195.5 W h kg −1 and a large power capability of 3800 W kg −1 . The findings in this work could build a clear relationship between materials with different conductivities for designing electrode materials.

Abstract:MnO2 is considered as one of the most promising electrode materials for flexible supercapacitors but it often suffer in poor conductivity, which limits practical applications according to industry needs. To enhance the performance, forming MnO2-based hybrid structures with conductive materials is a promising implement approach. Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets, a new kind of 2D transition metal carbides with metallic conductivity and hydrophilic nature, are promising candidate to couple with MnO2. According to the complementary principle, we design a novel structure MnO2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid nanocomposite by synergistically coupling one-dimensional (1D) MnO2 nanoneedles with two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene sheet for flexible supercapacitor. XPS investigations suggest the obvious charge transfer from Ti3C2Tx sheets to MnO2 nanoneedles, where Ti3C2Tx sheets serve as a remarkable 2D conductive substrate to facilitate the electrons transfer in the nanocomposites. This strong synergistic effect between Ti3C2Tx and MnO2 resulting from the chemical interaction greatly enhance the electrical conductivity, specific capacitance, rate stability and structural stability of the MnO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite. To show the potential application in energy storage, a symmetrical flexible supercapacitor device with good electrochemical performance, high flexibility and super cycling ability is fabricated by utilizing MnO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites as electrode materials. This work has proposed a new approach of developing advanced nanocomposites from a MnO2-based electrode for high performance flexible electronics.

Abstract:Combining the new two-dimensional conductive MXene with transition metal oxide to build composite structure is a promising path to improve the conductivity of metal oxide. However, a critical challenge still remains in how to achieve a good combination of MXene and metal oxide. Herein, we develop a facile hydrothermal route to synthesize the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode for supercapacitors by synergistically coupling MnO2nanowires with Ti3C2TxMXene nanoflakes. Compared with the pure MnO2electrode, the morphology of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode changes from nanowires to nanoflowers. Moreover, the overall conductivity and electrochemical performance of the composite electrode are greatly improved due to an addition of Ti3C2TxMXene. The specific capacitance of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode achieves 210.8 F·g-1at a scan rate of 2 mV·s-1, while that of the pure MnO2electrode is only 55.2 F·g-1. Furthermore, the specific capacitance of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode still can remain at 97.2% even after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles, revealing an excellent cycle stability. The synthesis strategy of this work can pave the way for the research and practical application of the electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:MXene is a new intercalation pseudocapacitive electrode material for supercapacitor application. Intensifying fast ion diffusion is significantly essential for MXene to achieve excellent electrochemical performance. The expansion of interlayer void by traditional spontaneous species intercalation always leads to a slight increase in capacitance due to the existence of species sacrificing the smooth diffusion of electrolyte ions. Herein, an effective intercalation-deintercalation interlayer design strategy is proposed to help MXene achieve higher capacitance. Electrochemical cation intercalation leads to the expansion of interlayer space. After electrochemical cation extraction, intercalated cations are deintercalated mostly, leaving a small number of cations trapped in the interlayer silt and serving as pillars to maintain the interlayer space, offering an open, unobstructed interlayer space for better ion migration and storage. Also, a preferred surface with more -O terminations for redox reaction is created due to the reaction between cations and -OH terminations. As a result, the processed MXene delivers a much improved capacitance compared to that of the original Ti3C2Tx electrode (T stands for the surface termination groups, such as -OH, -F, and -O). This study demonstrates an improvement of electrochemical performance of MXene electrodes by controlling the interlayer structure and surface chemistry.

Abstract:MXene is an ideal candidate material for supercapacitor electrode due to their unique accordion-like structure, large specific surface area, remarkable conductivity and excellent chemical stability. Due to the large surface energy between layers, it is easy to stack between layers of MXene, and the energy storage field between the layers cannot be fully utilized. Therefore, increasing the interlayer spacing of MXene is a research focus to enhance electrochemical performance. The spinel ternary metal oxide MnCo2O4 have been extensively investigated as electrode materials due to low-cost and highly theoretical capacitances. Moreover, manganese ions can improve the rate performance of the material, and cobalt ions have a higher oxidation potential. Herein, the interlayer spacing of MXene is increased by introducing nano-scale MnCo2O4 particles. The as-prepared optimal electrode material exhibits a specific capacity of 806.7 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, and excellent cycle stability. The asymmetric supercapacitor device is assembled by the obtained electrode as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, which the device can provide energy density of 26.8 Wh kg−1 at power density of 2.88 kW kg−1 with excellent cycle stability (93.8% capacity retention after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1). The research proposes a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare a high-performance MXene-based supercapacitor.

Abstract:MXene materials have become a competitive candidate for electrochemical energy storage due to their unique two-dimensional layered structure, high density, metal-like conductivity, fast ion intercalation, tunable surface terminal groups, and good mechanical flexibilities, showing unique application advantages in the field of supercapacitors. With widely research of MXene in energy storage applications, plenty of studies in synthesis strategies of MXene, including etching, intercalation and exfoliation processes, and its charge storage mechanism in supercapacitors have been conducted. However, the restacking of two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets severely affects their electrochemical performance. To prevent the stacking of MXene, MXene-based nanocomposite electrode materials have been developed with remarkable electrochemical performance by incorporating conventional active capacitive materials, including metal oxides/sulfides and conductive polymers, with MXene. This review summarizes the etching strategies of MXenes and selection of intercalants, also discusses the charge storage mechanism of MXenes in aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. It mainly expounds the preparation strategies and applications of MXene-based nanocomposites in supercapacitors, including MXene/metal oxide, MXene/metal sulfide, MXene/conducting polymer, and MXene/carbon-based composites. Additionally, the advantages of combining MXene with other active materials in supercapacitor applications, which support its promising prospects, are discussed. Finally, the critical challenges faced by MXene-based nanocomposites in long-term research are mentioned.

Abstract:Nickel molybdate is emerged as a promising electrode material in supercapacitors for its rich redox chemistry. However, its limited electrical and ionic conductivities keep it from achieving its full capacitance potential. Here, a facile pathway is reported to synthesize NiMoO4/Ti3C2Tx nanosheets with interconnected porous construction, which may promote the electrolyte ion diffusion during reversible insertion/deinsertion processes, further improve its capacity. The fabricated NiMoO4/Ti3C2Tx electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 545.5 C g(-1) (1364 F g(-1)) at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1) alongside with attractive cycling stability, contributed to the strong synergistic effects between NiMoO4 and Ti3C2Tx. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor is fabricated by coupling NiMoO4/Ti3C2Tx positive electrode with reduced graphene oxide hydrogel negative electrode, which demonstrates a broad potential window of 1.6 V, and an energy density of 33.76 Wh kg(-1).
Ti3C2-MXene Composite Films Functionalized with Polypyrrole and Ionic Liquid-Based Microemulsion Particles for Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract:Stemming from its unique structure and properties, Ti3C2-MXenes have stood out from the crowd of electrode materials due to effectively ameliorating imperfections of common ones for excellent energy storage. However, a major stumbling block in the further development of MXene-based supercapacitors is the inherent low capacities caused by severe restacking of nanosheets. Herein, we develop a simple, effective and innovative strategy, namely, introducing both polymerized polypyrrole (PPy) particles and ionic liquid (ILs)-based microemulsion particles as "dual spacers", to fabricate functionalized Ti3C2-MXene composite films for high-performance and wide-temperature application in supercapacitors. The PPy particles acting as one "spacer" circumvent restacking issues of MXene nanosheets, while contribute to desirable capacitance of the hybrid material. ILs-based micro-emulsions spontaneously adsorbing onto PPy-Ti3C2Tx nanosheets are conceived to be one more liquid "spacer" for fast ion diffusion kinetics and absent electrolyte imbibition steps, which is rarely reported in previous research for MXene-based electrode materials. These features endow the composite films with excellent specific capacitance, rate capability and cycling stability between 4 degrees C and 50 degrees C. At room temperature, the symmetric supercapacitor device based on the composite films delivers a maximum gravimetric energy density of 31.2 Wh kg(-1) (at 1030.4 W kg(-1)) and reserves 91% of the initial specific capacitance with a coulombic efficiency of 91% after 2000 cycles. All these impressive results substantiate that the composite films prepared by ingenious structure design showcase huge potentials in advanced MXene-based supercapacitors using various ionic liquid electrolytes.
