Abstract:Environmental concerns and fossil fuel shortage put pressure on both power and transportation systems. Electric vehicles (EVs) are thought to be a good solution to these problems. With EV adoption, energy flow is two way: from grid to vehicle and from vehicle to grid, which is known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) today. This paper considers electric power systems and provides a review of the impact of V2G on power system stability. The concept and basics of V2G technology are introduced at first, followed by a description of EV application in the world. Several technical issues are detailed in V2G modeling and capacity forecasting, steady-state analysis and stability analysis. Research trends of such topics are declared at last.

Abstract:The impact study of electric vehicle (EV) integration on medium voltage (MV) grids has been done in order to investigate the effects of different EV charging scenarios on MV grids from the perspectives of power component loading and voltage profiles. The intent of the impact study of EV integration is to identify the bottlenecks of power systems for the EV grid integration, assess different EV charging scenarios and quantify the benefits from smart charging from the power component loading and voltage profile perspectives. Three charging scenarios, dumb charging, timed charging and fleet operator based charging, have been considered in the impact study. The vehicle driving pattern data in Denmark have been used to determine the EV charging demands of different charging scenarios. A MV grid from the Bornholm power system has been used to implement the case studies.

Abstract:With the continuous increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the market, both EVs and charging stations are rapidly developing. This paper provides an overview of the negative impacts of EV charging on the distribution grid at the current stage. It summarizes specific solutions proposed by scholars both domestically and internationally to address the effects on voltage, harmonics, and power quality. These solutions mainly involve the addition of filters to the distribution grid, the use of 12-pulse rectifiers, and series resonance. Furthermore, the paper analyzes how Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology can balance the grid and regulate power quality issues caused by EV charging, ensuring stable system operation. V2G technology also enables EVs to function as mobile energy storage devices and allows for rational energy distribution using bidirectional charging stations. The integration of charging stations with the grid, forming a connected vehicle network, is considered the future direction of EV development.

Abstract:Electric vehicles have gradually become the mainstream means of transportation. As a way of energy storage, electric vehicles can participate in the flexible regulation of grid frequency. However, when a great quantity of electric vehicles are connected to the grid, the stability of the power system will be affected. On the one hand, the way grid-forming electric vehicles output the active power when they participate in grid frequency modulation is introduced. On the other hand, the inertia adjustment strategy is applied to the control of grid-forming electric vehicles, which limits the frequency change rate of inverters and optimizes the dynamic characteristics. Finally, an example of multiple grid-forming electric vehicles participating in power grid regulation is established to verify the control strategy.

Abstract:Energy crisis and environmental issues have encouraged the adoption of electric vehicle as an alternative transportation option to the conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. Recently, the development of smart grid concept in power grid has advanced the role of electric vehicles in the form of vehicle to grid technology. Vehicle to grid technology allows bidirectional energy exchange between electric vehicles and the power grid, which offers numerous services to the power grid, such as power grid regulation, spinning reserve, peak load shaving, load leveling and reactive power compensation. As the implementation of vehicle to grid technology is a complicated unit commitment problem with different conflicting objectives and constraints, optimization techniques are usually utilized. This paper reviews the framework, benefits and challenges of vehicle to grid technology. This paper also summarizes the main optimization techniques to achieve different vehicle to grid objectives while satisfying multiple constraints.

Abstract:Low carbon and renewable energy sources (RESs) are fast becoming a key sustainable instrument in meeting the global growth of electricity demand while curbing carbon emissions. For example, the gradual displacement of fossil-fuelled vehicles with electrically driven counterparts will inevitably increase both the power grid baseload and peak demand. In many developed countries, the electrification process of the transport sector has already started in tandem with the installation of multi-GW renewable energy capacity, particularly wind and solar, huge investment in power storage technology, and end-user energy demand management. The expansion of the Electric Vehicle (EV) market presents a new opportunity to create a cleaner and transformative new energy carrier. For instance, a managed EV battery charging and discharging profile in conjunction with the national grid, known as the Vehicle-to-Grid system (V2G), is projected to be an important mechanism in reducing the impact of renewable energy intermittency. This paper presents an extensive literature review of the current status of EVs and allied interface technology with the power grid. The main findings and statistical details are drawn from up-to-date publications highlighting the latest technological advancements, limitations, and potential future market development. The authors believe that electric vehicle technology will bring huge technological innovation to the energy market where the vehicle will serve both as a means of transport and a dynamic energy vector interfacing with the grid (V2G), buildings (V2B), and others (V2X).

Abstract:Transportation electrification plays a crucial role in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enabling the decarbonization of power systems. However, current research on electric vehicles (EVs) only provides a fragmented examination of their impact on power system planning and operation, lacking a comprehensive overview across both transmission and distribution levels. This limits the effectiveness and efficiency of power system solutions for greater EV adoption. Conducting a systematic review of the effects of EVs on power transmission and distribution systems (e.g., grid integration, planning, operation, etc.), this paper aims to bridge the fragmented literature on the topic together by focusing on the interplay between transportation electrification and power systems. The study sheds light on the interplay between transportation electrification and power systems, delving into the importance of classifying EVs and charging infrastructure based on powertrain design, duty cycle, and typical features, as well as methods of capturing charging patterns and determining spatial-temporal charging profiles. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth discussion on the benefits of smart charging and the provision of grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services for maintaining power system reliability. With the holistic systems approach, this paper can identify the main objectives and potential barriers of power transmission and distribution systems in accommodating transportation electrification at scale. Concurrently, it paves the way for a comprehensive understanding of technological innovation, transportation-power system decarbonization, policy pathways, environmental advantages, scenario designs, and avenues for future research.

Abstract:Transportation electrification is inevitable driven by rising energy costs, climate and emission control requirements, and availability of petroleum supplies. Even a realistic 10 % electrification of transportation is expected to impact the electricity generation, transmission, and distribution capacities, and hence the world economy. In this chapter, the authors seek to enlighten the reader on electric vehicle usage around the world by discussing their applications, electric vehicle trials, and key learnings from these trials across three continents: America, Europe, and Australia. Special emphasis has been given to discussing the commuting trends across the three continents and how that effects the transition into the electrification of transportation. The chapter continues with an impact analysis of electric vehicles on car users, the power quality of grids, and finally carbon emissions. Finally, examples of charging infrastructure and worldwide vehicle-to-grid applications are reviewed. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the need for interoperable communication standards, as an enabling technology for the management of the transactions between the grid and electric vehicles.

The increasing trend of electric vehicle adoption is satisfied with new techno-economical advancements in development of electric vehicle power drive, battery and charger technologies. Abstract:Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology enables electric vehicles (EVs) to discharge unused power to the power grid, allowing EVs to serve as flexible energy resources. Although this technology promises benefits to power systems, its impact on transport systems is unknown. We investigate the interaction between transport and power systems with V2G during co-existing peak periods. Commuters choosing to discharge earn rewards while encountering additional delay costs and altering departure time. A bottleneck model is used to characterize drivers' departure time and discharge choices. Possible queue patterns and occurrence conditions are derived. Traffic congestion is proved to be reduced compared to the without V2G case when commuters choosing to discharge arrive at the bottleneck earlier than those choosing not to discharge. We also derive the sufficient condition of the "win–win–win" situation for EV drivers, power and transport systems and develop a decision tree for the power system to set the discharge reward optimally.

Abstract:This paper proposes a systematic evaluation framework of how electric vehicles can impact the decarbonization pathways of the whole electricity system, especially from the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode. Modeling of the transition toward a ‘near-zero’ carbon emission system includes the optimization of multi-provincial power dispatch and expansion planning via evolutionary steps of five years from 2020 to 2060. Based on the actual geography resources, statistics of the driving behavior and power generation and consumption data, three electric vehicle charging regimes are considered, namely unmanaged charging (V0G), smart orderly charging (V1G) and V2G. Results show that the implementation of V2G in China can reduce the total cost and unit decarbonization cost of the electricity system by 19.4% and 47.8%, and reduce the carbon emission in 2030 and 2050 by 6.4% and 45.7%. The required extra energy storage would decrease from 1146 GW to 296 GW in 2050. The model and assessment results can be used by policymakers to determine competitive flexibility technologies.

Abstract:Moving towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future, expanding electric vehicles (EVs) adoption is inevitable. However, uncontrolled charging of EVs, especially with their increased penetration among the utility grid, imposes several negative technical impacts, including grid instability and deteriorated power quality in addition to overloading conditions. Hence, smart and coordinated charging is crucial in EV electrification, where Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology is gaining much interest. Owing to its inherited capability of bi-directional power flow, V2G is capable of enhancing grid stability and resilience, load balancing, and congestion alleviation, as well as supporting renewable energy sources (RESs) integration. However, as with most emerging technologies, there are still technical research gaps that need to be addressed. In addition to these technical impacts, other multidisciplinary factors must be investigated to promote EVs adoption and V2G implementation. This paper provides a detailed demonstration of the technical problems associated with EVs penetration in distribution networks along with quantifiable insights into these limitations and the corresponding mitigation schemes. In addition, it discusses V2G benefits for power systems and consumers, as well as explores their technical barriers and research directions to adequately regulate their services and encourage EV's owners to its embracement. Moreover, other factors, including regulatory, social, economic and environmental ones that affect EV market penetration are being studied and related challenges are analyzed to draw recommendations that aid market growth.

Abstract:The gradual shift towards cleaner and green energy sources requires the application of electric vehicles (EVs) as the mainstream transportation platform. The application of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) shows promise in optimizing the power demand, shaping the load variation, and increasing the sustainability of smart grids. However, no comprehensive paper has been compiled regarding the of operation of V2G and types, current ratings and types of EV in sells market, policies relevant to V2G and business model, and the implementation difficulties and current procedures used to cope with problems. This work better represents the current challenges and prospects in V2G implementation worldwide and highlights the research gap across the V2G domain. The research starts with the opportunities of V2G and required policies and business models adopted in recent years, followed by an overview of the V2G technology; then, the challenges associated with V2G on the power grid and vehicle batteries; and finally, their possible solutions. This investigation highlighted a few significant challenges, which involve a lack of a concrete V2G business model, lack of stakeholders and government incentives, the excessive burden on EV batteries during V2G, the deficiency of proper bidirectional battery charger units and standards and test beds, the injection of harmonics voltage and current to the power grid, and the possibility of uneconomical and unscheduled V2G practices. Recent research and international agency reports are revised to provide possible solutions to these bottlenecks and, in places, the requirements for additional research. The promise of V2G could be colossal, but the scheme first requires tremendous collaboration, funding, and technology maturation.

Abstract:The energy revolution requires coordination in energy consumption, supply, storage and institutional systems. Renewable energy generation technologies, along with their associated costs, are already fully equipped for large-scale promotion. However, energy storage remains a bottleneck, and solutions are needed through the use of electric vehicles, which traditionally play the role of energy consumption in power systems. To clarify the key technologies and institutions that support EVs as terminals for energy use, storage, and feedback, the CSEE JPES forum assembled renowned experts and scholars in relevant fields to deliver keynote reports and engage in discussions on topics such as vehicle-grid integration technology, advanced solid-state battery technology, high-performance electric motor technology, and institutional innovation in the industry chain. These experts also provided prospects for energy storage and utilization technologies capable of decarbonizing new power systems.

Abstract:As the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) accelerates, driven by increasing urbanization and the push for sustainable infrastructure, the need for innovative solutions to support this growth has become more pressing. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology presents a promising solution by enabling EVs to engage in bidirectional interactions with the electrical grid. Through V2G, EVs can supply energy back to the grid during peak demand periods and draw power during off-peak times, offering a valuable tool for enhancing grid stability, improving energy management, and supporting environmental sustainability. Despite its potential, the large-scale implementation of V2G faces significant challenges, particularly from a technological and regulatory standpoint. The success of V2G requires coordinated efforts among various stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure providers, grid operators, and policymakers. In addition to the technical barriers, such as battery degradation due to frequent charging cycles and the need for advanced bidirectional charging systems, regulatory frameworks must evolve to accommodate this new energy paradigm. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of V2G technology, focusing on different perspectives—such as those of users, vehicles, infrastructures, and the electricity grid. This study will also explore ex ante, ex post, and ongoing assessment studies, alongside the experiences of pioneer cities in implementing V2G.
