Abstract:Giant enhancement of optical reorientation in pure nematic liquid crystals (LCs) was observed with a near-resonant input beam. The enhancement observed through reduction of the threshold of the optical Freedericksz transition in a 28- mu m-thick homeotropic LC cell was almost 700 times in comparison with the case of an off-resonant input beam. Wavelength dependence of the enhancement followed the LC absorption spectrum very well, confirming that the enhancement arose from the excitation of LC molecules. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Due to the superior optical properties and tremendous application prospects in the field of optical devices, both rare earth complex (REC) and chiral nematic liquid crystal (CNLC) have attracted widespread attention in the fields of theoretical research and engineering applications. Among the research on the optical behaviors of CNLC or REC, the controllable modulation of selective reflection of CNLCs and emitted fluorescence of RECs is of great significance to fabricated tunable optical materials. In this study, europium (III) complexes are dissolved and assembled in the chiral matrix of CNLCs to form binary CNLC-REC composites due to excellent compatibility between RECs and CNLCs. The selective reflection combined with the photoluminescence of binary fluorescent CNLCs are investigated, an electrically-controlled microscopic structure model is established to elaborate the dual-mode optical modulation based on the stable CNLC-REC composites. The reflectance of CNLCs can be tuned in the process from planar state with brilliant Bragg reflection to focal conic state with chaotic scattering, the intensity of fluorescence emitted by RECs can be modulated due to the increased scattering of incident UV light on the surface of CNLC-REC composite films. Furthermore, the dual-mode optical modulation can be operated at low voltages and the response time is within 3 ms. This facile and ultrafast methodology can be used to develop state-of-the-art tunable optical devices in the fields of LC display, fluorescent display and optical sensors.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles deposited on the windows of a liquid crystal (LC) cell were found to be able to reduce the surface anchoring energy of the LC, and hence the threshold for its reorientation phase transition, by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude when a cw pump light was used to excite the local plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles. The effect was due to the disorientation of LC molecules between nanoparticles by the plasmon-enhanced local field that softens the effective surface anchoring. A light-controlled variation of surface anchoring energy could provide new opportunities for optoelectronic applications of a LC.
A Fast Light-Induced Grating in Bent-Core Nematic Liquid Crystals with In-Plane Switching

Abstract:We observed a fast light-induced grating in bent-core nematic liquid crystal (LC) using an in-plane switching cell. Combining weak writing beams and a dc field, this grating can be easily built up and decay within 10 ms, which is two orders of magnitude faster than that in conventional device composed of doped rodlike LC and planar cell. Besides, this grating is produced by the periodic twist deformation of LC, whereas the conventional grating is produced by the periodic bend deformation, therefore, this grating can be used to explore the twist elastic properties of LC systems. Abstract:The far-field and near-field properties of a spherical nematic liquid crystal (NLC) coated metal nanoparticle (NPs) have been investigated in an external field, basing on the quasistatic theory. The resonant wavelength is tunable by varying metallic material of core, anisotropy extent and thickness of liquid crystals (LCs). The field enhancement is along the incident polarization near the outer surface of the shell. The direction of field is reverse in the inner surface comparing with the one if outer shell. In contrast to isotropy shell, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) shows an obvious red shift and field enhancement near outer surface of the shell always is stronger.
Polymerization Enabled Reduction of the Electrically Induced Birefringence Change in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Electric fields modify the optical properties of nematic liquid crystals(NLCs) by changing the nematic molecular orientation or order parameters, which enables electro-optic applications of NLCs. However, the field-induced optic change is undesirable in some cases. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that polymer stabilization weakens the birefringence change of NLCs caused by the nanosecond electrically modified order parameter effect. The birefringence change is reduced by 65% in the NLC doped with 25% reactive monomer, which is polymerized close to the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition. This technique could be used in liquid crystal devices where the birefringence change is unfavored.
Dispersion and Tunable Alignment of Colloidal Silver Nanowires in a Nematic Liquid Crystal for Applications in Electric-Optic Devices

Abstract:The dispersion and tunable alignment of colloidal nanomaterials is desirable for practical applications in electric-optic (E-O) devices; however, it remains challenging for large one-dimensional nanomaterials with a large aspect ratio. Here, we demonstrate a large-scale, simple, multi-microdomain, and noncontact photoalignment technology to align colloidal silver nanowires (AgNWs, length ∼4.5 μm, diameter ∼70.6 nm) in a liquid crystal (LC) with a high two-dimensional order parameter (about 0.9). The AgNWs are precisely self-assembled via photomasks with twisted nematic and planar alignment models in microdomain regions. The AgNW orientation is tuned with an electric field, through the rotation of an LC director n, which allows three-dimensional (3D) tunable orientation combined with photoalignment. The colloidal dispersions of AgNWs in the LC cell influenced the ion transfer, elastic constant, dielectric anisotropy, and near LC alignment, changing the E-O properties of the LC devices. The 3D tunable orientation of an AgNW by photoalignment and an electric field could provide a new way to assemble large colloidal nanomaterials and fabricate functional E-O devices.
Switchable Polarization-Sensitive Surface Plasmon Resonance of Highly Stable Gold Nanorods-Liquid Crystals Composites

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate the bulk self-alignment of gold nanorods (GNRs) dispersed in lyotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with high optical absorption coefficient at the surface plasmon resonant wavelength. The polymer-coated GNRs which show spontaneous long-range orientational ordering along the director of LC host exhibit long-term stability as well as high concentration. External magnetic field and shearing allow for alignment and realignment of the orientation of gold nanorods by changing the director of the liquid crystal matrix. This results in a switchable polarization-sensitive surface plasmon resonance exhibiting stark differences from that of the same nanorods in isotropic fluids. The devise-scale bulk nanoparticle alignment may enable optical metamaterial mass production and control of surface plasmon resonance of nanoparticles.
Ordered Au Nanocrystals on a Substrate Formed by Light-Induced Rapid Annealing.

Abstract:Light-induced rapid annealing (LIRA) is a widely used method to modify the morphology and crystallinity of noble metal nanoparticles, and the nanoparticles generally evolve into nanospheres. It is rather challenging to form faceted Au nanocrystals on a substrate using LIRA. Here the formation of spatially ordered Au nanocrystals using a continuous wave infrared laser is reported, assisted by a metamaterial perfect absorber. Faceted Au nanocrystals in truncated-octahedral or multi-twinned geometries can be obtained. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the Au nanoparticles during laser annealing is also revealed, where the crystal grain growth and the surface melting are shown to play key roles in nanocrystal formation. The evolution of morphology also gives the freedom of tuning the absorption spectrum of the metamaterial absorber. These findings provide a novel way for tailoring the morphology and crystallinity of metallic nanoparticles and may pave the way to fabricate refined nano-devices in many potential applications for optics, electronics, catalysis, surface-chemistry and biology.
Large-area Bulk Self-Assembly of Plasmonic Nanorods in Nematic Liquid Crystal Via Surface-Mediated Alignment

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel method to organize gold nanorods (GNRs) on a large scale by means of nematic lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) and surface-induced bulk alignment. LC is unidirectionally aligned via surface-treatment, and then gets GNRs organized with a negative order parameter in bulk through elastic force. The self-assembled GNRs (with a considerable high concentration of about 6 wt%) in LC exhibit a strong polarization-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Polarized optical microscopic imaging, polarization-dependent extinction and scattering spectra of LSPR are utilized to characterize the spatial orientation of GNRs. This method is compatible with the state-of-the-art LC display technique and allows for large-scale fabrication of optical metamaterials, plasmonic polarizers comprised of self-aligned anisometric nanoparticles with extremely low cost. Alignment Control of Nematic Liquid Crystal Using Gold Nanoparticles Grafted by the Liquid Crystalline Polymer with Azobenzene Mesogens As the Side Chains.

Abstract:The gold nanoparticles highly grafted by a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) with azobenzene mesogens as the side chain (denoted as Au@TE-PAzo NPs) are successfully designed and synthesized by the two-phase Brust-Schiffrin method. The chemical structures of the monomer and polymer ligands have been confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance, and the molecular weight of the polymer is determined by gel permeation chromatography. The combined analysis of transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis shows that the size of the nanoparticles is 2.5(±0.4) nm and the content of the gold in the Au@TE-PAzo NPs is ca. 17.58%. The resultant Au@TE-PAzo NPs can well disperse in the nematic LC of 5CB. The well-dispersed mixture with appropriate doping concentrations can automatically form a perfect homeotropic alignment in the LC cell. The homeotropic alignment is attributed to the brush formed by Au@TE-PAzo NPs on the substrate, wherein the Au@TE-PAzo NPs gradually diffuse onto the substrate from the mixture. On the contrary, the pure side chain LCPs cannot yield vertical alignment of 5CB, which indicates that the alignment of 5CB is ascribed to the synergistic interaction of the nanoparticles and the grafted LCPs. Moreover, Au@TE-PAzo NPs show excellent film-forming property on account of their periphery of high densely grafted LCPs, which can form uniform thin film by spin-coating. The resultant thin film also can prompt the automatical vertical alignment of the nematic 5CB. Further, upon alternative irradiation of UV and visible light, the alignment of 5CB reversibly switches between vertical and random orientation because of the trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene group on the periphery of Au@TE-PAzo NPs. These experimental results suggest that this kind of nanoparticles can be potentially applied in constructing the remote-controllable optical devices.
Achiral Nanoparticle-Enhanced Chiral Twist and Thermal Stability of Blue Phase Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) are chiral mesophases with 3D order, which makes them a promising template for doping nanoparticles (NPs), yielding tunable nanomaterials attractive for microlasers and numerous microsensor applications. However, doping NPs to BPLCs causes BP lattice extension, which translates to elongation of operating wavelengths of light reflection. Here, it is demonstrated that small (2.4 nm diameter) achiral gold (Au) NPs decorated with designed LC-like ligands can enhance the chiral twist of BPLCs (i.e., reduce cell size of the single BP unit up to ∼14% and ∼7% for BPI and BPII, respectively), translating to a blue-shift of Bragg reflection. Doping NPs also significantly increases the thermal stability of BPs from 5.5 °C (for undoped BPLC) up to 22.8 °C (for doped BPLC). In line with our expectations, both effects are saturated, and their magnitude depends on the concentration of investigated nanodopants as well the BP phase type. Our research highlights the critical role of functionalization of Au NPs on the phase sequence of BPLCs. We show that inappropriate selection of surface ligands can destabilize BPs. Our BPLC and Au NPs are photochemically stable and exhibit great miscibility, preventing NP aggregation in the BPLC matrix over the long term. We believe that our findings will improve the fabrication of advanced nanomaterials into 3D periodic soft photonic structures.

Abstract:The authors experimentally demonstrate a magnetically tunable optical negative refraction (NR) in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), arising from the variation of optical anisotropy in the NLCs induced by external magnetic field. By measuring the refraction angle of the transmitted beam through the prism-shaped NLC device, the tunable extraordinary refractions for different molecular directions using magnetic field are observed. It shows that NR in NLCs occurs at certain inclination angle and can be tuned by changing the direction of the magnetic field, which is in good agreement with the established theory.

Abstract:We report on the fabrication of reshaped Ag nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a Nd:YAG crystal by combining Ag ion implantation and swift heavy Xe ion irradiation. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is proved to be efficiently modulated according to the phenomenon of polarization-dependent absorption. The LSPR peak located at 448 nm shows red shift and blue shift at 0° and 90° polarization, respectively, which is in good agreement with calculation by discrete dipole approximation. Based on the near-field intensity distribution, the interaction between reshaped NPs shows a non-ignorable effect on the optical absorption. Furthermore, the polarization-dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is analyzed, which is positively related to the modulated LSPR absorption. It demonstrates the potential of the enhancement of PL intensity by embedded plasmonic Ag NPs. This work breaks the conventional view of the quenching effect of NPs by ion irradiation and opens a new way to realize the modulation of optical dichroism.

Abstract:We investigated the geometric resonances of periodic arrays of gold nanoparticles embedded in a nematic liquid crystal using a semi-analytical method. By changing the liquid crystal’s refractive index seen by the scattered light propagating along the array axis, the geometric resonance can be modulated according to an analytical law. The spectral tunability is proportional to the index difference (ne−no) of the liquid crystal and the interparticle distance i.e., Δλ=(ne−no)d, which is as large as 100 nm. The large and easily controlled tunability of this compound structure makes it desirable for design of plasmon-based sensors and switches.
Facet-dependent Cu 2 O nanocrystals in manipulating alignment of liquid crystals and photomechanical behaviors

Abstract:Manipulating the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is a hot and fundamental issue for their applications in block copolymers, photonics, actuators, biosensors, and liquid-crystal displays. Here, the surface characteristic of Cu 2 O nanocrystals was well controlled to manipulate the orientation of the LCs. The mechanism of the orientation of the LCs induced by Cu 2 O nanocrystals was elucidated based on the interaction between the LCs and Cu 2 O nanocrystals. To comprehensively prove our assumption, different types of LCs (nematic, cholesteric, and smectic) as well as the same type of LCs with different polarities were selected in our system. Moreover, the photomechanical behaviors of the LC polymer composites demonstrated that the alignment of LCs can be effectively manipulated using Cu 2 O nanocrystals.

Abstract:By coating plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) with thermally responsive liquid crystals (LCs) it is possible to prepare reversibly reconfigurable plasmonic nanomaterials with prospective applications in optoelectronic devices. However, simple and versatile methods to precisely tailor properties of liquid-crystalline nanoparticles (LC NPs) are still required. Here, we report a new method for tuning structural properties of assemblies of nanoparticles grafted with a mixture of promesogenic and alkyl thiols, by varying design of the latter. As a model system, we used Ag and Au nanoparticles that were coated with three-ring promesogenic molecules and dodecanethiol ligand. These LC NPs self-assemble into switchable lamellar (Ag NPs) or tetragonal (Au NPs) aggregates, as determined with small angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Reconfigurable assemblies of Au NPs with different unit cell symmetry (orthorombic) are formed if hexadecanethiol and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol were used in the place of dodecanethiol; in the case of Ag NPs the use of 11-hydroxyundecanethiol promotes formation of a lamellar structure as in the reference system, although with substantially broader range of thermal stability (140 vs. 90 °C). Our results underline the importance of alkyl ligand functionalities in determining structural properties of liquid-crystalline nanoparticles, and, more generally, broaden the scope of synthetic tools available for tailoring properties of reversibly reconfigurable plasmonic nanomaterials.

Shape-dependent Dispersion and Alignment of Nonaggregating Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles in Lyotropic and Thermotropic Liquid Crystals.

Abstract:We use both lyotropic liquid crystals composed of prolate micelles and thermotropic liquid crystals made of rod-like molecules to uniformly disperse and unidirectionally align relatively large gold nanorods and other complex-shaped nanoparticles at high concentrations. We show that some of these ensuing self-assembled orientationally ordered soft matter systems exhibit polarization-dependent plasmonic properties with strongly pronounced molar extinction exceeding that previously achieved in self-assembled composites. The long-range unidirectional alignment of gold nanorods is mediated mainly by anisotropic surface anchoring interactions at the surfaces of gold nanoparticles. Polarization-sensitive absorption, scattering, and extinction are used to characterize orientations of nanorods and other nanoparticles. The experimentally measured unique optical properties of these composites, which stem from the collective plasmonic effect of the gold nanorods with long-range order in a liquid crystal matrix, are reproduced in computer simulations. A simple phenomenological model based on anisotropic surface interaction explains the alignment of gold nanorods dispersed in liquid crystals and the physical underpinnings behind our observations.
Nanoparticle localization within chiral liquid crystal defect lines and nanoparticle interactions

Abstract:Self-assembly of colloidal particles into predefined structures is a promising way to design inexpensive manmade materials with advanced macroscopic properties. Doping of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with nanoparticles has a series of advantages in addressing these grand scientific and engineering challenges. It also provides a very rich soft matter platform for the discovery of unique condensed matter phases. The LC host naturally allows the realization of diverse anisotropic interparticle interactions, enriched by the spontaneous alignment of anisotropic particles due to the boundary conditions of the LC director. Here we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the ability of LC media to host topological defect lines can be used as a tool to probe the behavior of individual nanoparticles as well as effective interactions between them. LC defect lines irreversibly trap nanoparticles enabling controlled particle movement along the defect line with the use of a laser tweezer. Minimization of Landau-de Gennes free energy reveals a sensitivity of the ensuing effective nanoparticle interaction to the shape of the particle, surface anchoring strength, and temperature, which determine not only the strength of the interaction but also its repulsive or attractive character. Theoretical results are supported qualitatively by experimental observations. This work may pave the way toward designing controlled linear assemblies as well as one-dimensional crystals of nanoparticles such as gold nanorods or quantum dots with tunable interparticle spacing.

Abstract:Present investigation covers the dielectric and electro-optical study of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) 1823 A dispersed with the ferromagnetic nanoparticles (FNPs) Fe 3 O 4 . Three concentrations of nanoparticles (NPs) in the NLC matrix namely 0.1 wt/wt%, 0.3 wt/wt%, and 0.5 wt/wt% are prepared and perceptible changes in the various properties are compared with the pure NLC. Variation of dielectric permittivity (ε ꓕ ) with the variation of frequency and variation of temperature is studied. Dielectric permittivity (ε ꓕ ) is just found to be decreased as we increased the concentration of NPs, which shows that the applied electric field is less impactful on the prepared composites. It is also found that the dielectric permittivity (ε ꓕ ) is increased with the increase of temperature. Birefringence is found to be decreased with the increase in the concentration of the NPs which showed that the orientational order of NLC 1823 A is got to be disturbed due to the presence of the NPs. It is also shown that as the temperature is increased, birefringence is found to get decreased due to its approach toward isotropic phase. Threshold voltage is found to be decreased by 56.25% for the 0.3 wt/wt% and by 25% for 0.1 wt/wt% composite which are pretty good result in context of achieving the low power optical switching devices. The results achieved are tried to be explained on account of the interaction between NLC and NPs.
