Abstract:High-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used to examine the electronic band structure of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ near the Brillouin zone center. A consistent separation of the $\alpha_{1}$ and $\alpha_{2}$ bands is observed with little $k_{z}$ dependence of the $\alpha_{1}$ band. First-principles calculations for bulk and thin films demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe atoms and hybridization-induced spin-orbit effects lifts the degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals at the zone center leading to orbital ordering. These experimental and computational results provide a natural microscopic basis for the nematicity observed in the Fe-based superconductors.

Abstract:We report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of the intercalated iron selenide superconductor (Tl,Rb)(y)Fe2-xSe2 (T-c = 32 K). Single-crystal measurements up to 480 K on both Se-77 and Rb-87 nuclei show a superconducting phase with no magnetic order. The Knight shifts K and relaxation rates 1/T1T increase very strongly with temperature above T-c, before flattening at 400 K. The quadratic T-dependence and perfect proportionality of both K and 1/T1T data demonstrate their origin in paramagnetic moments. A minimal model for this pseudogap-type response is not a missing density of states, but rather two additive contributions from the itinerant electronic and local magnetic components, a framework unifying the K and 1/T1T data in many iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:We observed in superconducting (Tl, Rb)(2)Fe4Se5 spin-wave branches that span an energy range from 6.5 to 209 meV. Spin dynamics are successfully described by a Heisenberg localized spin model whose dominant in-plane interactions include only the nearest (J(1) and J(1)') and next nearest neighbor (J(2) and J(2)') exchange terms within and between the tetramer spin blocks, respectively. These experimentally determined exchange constants would crucially constrain the theoretical viewpoints on magnetism and superconductivity in the Fe-based materials. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.100501

Abstract:The magnetic and iron vacancy orders in superconducting (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 single-crystals are investigated by using a high-pressure neutron diffraction technique. Similar to the temperature effect, the block antiferromagnetic order gradually decreases upon increasing pressure while the Fe vacancy superstructural order remains intact before its precipitous disappearance at the critical pressure Pc = 8.3 GPa. Combined with previously determined Pc for superconductivity, our phase diagram under pressure reveals the concurrence of the block AFM order, the iron vacancy order and superconductivity for the 245 superconductor. A synthesis of current experimental data in a coherent physical picture is attempted.

Abstract:We report both Se-77 and Rb-87 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on Tl0.47Rb0.34Fe1.63Se2 single-crystalline superconductors (T-c approximate to 32 K). Singlet superconductivity is suggested by a sharp drop of the Knight shift K(T) below T-c, after subtracting the superconducting diamagnetic effect. However, the Hebel-Slichter coherence peak below T-c is not observed in the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T-1, even with a low in-plane NMR field of 2.6 T. Just above T-c, no evidence of low-energy spin fluctuation is found in the spin-lattice relaxation rate on both the Se-77 and the Rb-87 sites. Upon warming, however, the Knight shifts and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of both nuclei increase substantially with temperature. In particular, the Knight shift is nearly isotropic and follow a function fit of K = a + bT(2) from T-c up to 300 K. Our observations should put a strong constraint to the theory of magnetism and superconductivity in the recently discovered iron selenide superconductors.

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR08 Meeting of The American Physical Society Thermoelectric effects and band-dependent scattering of normalstate quasiparticles in spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 ZHUAN XU, XIANGFAN XU, Zhejiang University, China, TIJIANG LIU, DAVID FOBES, ZHIQIANG MAO, Tulane University, YING LIU, Pennsylvania State University — We present the first measurement on Nernst effects in the normal state of oddparity, spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. Below 100 K, the negative Nernst signal was found to be large and nonlinear as a function of magnetic field with its absolute value increasing rapidly as the temperature was lowered. After reaching a maximum around T = T ∗ = 20 25 K, however, the Nernst signal drops linearly with the decreasing temperature. No corresponding feature was found around this temperature in the specific heat. We argue that the large value of the Nernst signal is related to the presence of multibands and the nonlinearity to band-dependent magnetic fluctuation in Sr2RuO4. Furthermore, the quasiparticle scattering from the magnetic fluctuation is suppressed below T ∗ due to the emergence of coherence among quasiparticles in the γ band, an active band for superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. Results on temperature dependence of the thermopower, which was seen to exhibit a sharp kink around T ∗, provided further support to this picture of banddependent normal-state properties. Our thermoelectric measurements appear to suggest that the suppression of the magnetic fluctuation makes it possible for the spin-triplet superconductivity to emerge in Sr2RuO4. Abstract:The newly discovered iron-based superconductors have triggered renewed enormous research interest in the condensed matter physics community. Nuclear magnetic resonance （NMR） is a low-energy local probe for studying strongly correlated electrons, and particularly important for high-T C superconductors. Abstract:Magnetic spin fluctuations is one candidate to produce the bosonic modes that mediate the superconductivity in the ferrous superconductors. Up until now, all of the LaOFeAs and BaFe2As2 structure types have simple commensurate magnetic ground states, as result of nesting Fermi surfaces. This type of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is known to be vulnerable to shifts in the Fermi surface when electronic densities are altered at the superconducting compositions. Superconductivity has more recently been discovered in alpha-Fe(Te,Se), whose electronically active antifluorite planes are isostructural to the FeAs layers found in the previous ferrous superconductors and share with them the same quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure. Here we report neutron scattering studies that reveal a unique complex incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound alpha-FeTe. When the long-range magnetic order is suppressed by the isovalent substitution of Te with Se, short-range correlations survive in the superconducting phase.

Abstract:The interplay of orbital and spin degrees of freedom is the fundamental characteristic in numerous condensed matter phenomena, including high temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquids, and topological semimetals. In iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), this causes superconductivity to emerge in the vicinity of two other instabilities: nematic and magnetic. Unveiling the mutual relationship among nematic order, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity has been a major challenge for research in FeSCs, but it is still controversial. Here, by carrying out 77Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on FeSe single crystals, doped by cobalt and sulfur that serve as control parameters, we demonstrate that the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases in proportion to the strength of spin fluctuations, while it is independent of the nematic transition temperature Tnem. Our observation therefore directly implies that superconductivity in FeSe is essentially driven by spin fluctuations in the intermediate coupling regime, while nematic fluctuations have a marginal impact on Tc.

Abstract:We report polarized neutron scattering measurements of the low energy spin fluctuations of the iron-selenide superconductor Li0.8Fe0.2ODFeSe below and above its superconducting transition temperature T (c) = 41 K. Our experiments confirmed that the resonance mode near 21 meV is magnetic. Moreover, the spin excitations are essentially isotropic in spin space at 5 <= E <= 29 meV in the superconducting and normal states. Our results suggest that the resonance mode in iron-based superconductors becomes isotropic when the influence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic/nematic order is minimized, similar to those observed in cuprate superconductors.
