Abstract:Chiral ferrocene ligands have been widely used in asymmetric catalysis. The advantages of using ferrocene as a scaffold for chiral ligands are described, particularly those regarding planar chirality, rigid bulkiness, and ease of derivatization. The role of planar chirality in 1,2- and 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene systems is discussed. By using a bulky ferrocene fragment, novel ferrocene ligands were designed, and high enantioselectivity and regioselectivity were achieved in the allylic substitution reaction of monosubstituted allyl substrates. Using the tunable electronic properties of a diphosphine-oxazoline ferrocenyl ligand, the regioselectivity of the intermolecular asymmetric Heck reaction was also examined.

Abstract:Since its discovery in the early 1950s, the sandwich‐type structure of ferrocene has sparked significant research into its applications across various disciplines, including asymmetric synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science. Planar chiral ferrocenes play a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis by serving as essential scaffolds for chiral ligands and catalysts. Classical methods for synthesizing planar chiral ferrocenes often encounter limitations such as low atom economy and lengthy synthesis steps. In contrast, catalytic desymmetrization synthesis strategies offer a promising alternative due to their ability to enhance step and atom efficiency. This review highlights recent advancements in this field, particularly focusing on transition‐metal‐catalyzed C‐H functionalization and catalytic enantioselective desymmetrization reactions.

Abstract:Recently, we designed and synthesized a series of chiral ferrocenes and cyclophanes with and without planar chirality. In this review, our own work on the, applications of these ligands in transition-metal catalyzed enantioselective carbon–carbon bond forming reactions, including asymmetric allylic substitution reactions of ketone imino esters, enolates of simple ketone and mono substituted allyl substrates, intermolecular Heck reaction of dihydrofuran and pyrrol, addition reactions of diethylzinc to carbonyl derivatives are presented with emphasis on the regio- and enantioselectivities of the reactions. The role of planar chirality of ferrocenes and cyclophanes as well as some of their structural features influence the reactivity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric catalysis are also discussed.
Chiral Ligand‐Decorated Rhodium Nanoparticles Incorporated in Covalent Organic Framework for Asymmetric Catalysis

Abstract:While metal nanoparticles (NPs) have demonstrated their great potential in catalysis, introducing chiral microenvironment around metal NPs to achieve efficient conversion and high enantioselectivity remains a long‐standing challenge. In this work, tiny Rh NPs, modified by chiral diene ligands (Lx) bearing diverse functional groups, are incorporated into a covalent organic framework (COF) for the asymmetric 1,4‐addition reactions between arylboronic acids and nitroalkenes. Though Rh NPs hosted in the COF are inactive, decorating Rh NPs with Lx creates the active Rh‐Lx interface and induces high activity. Moreover, chiral microenvironment modulation around Rh NPs by altering the groups on chiral diene ligands greatly optimizes the enantioselectivity (up to 95.6% ee). Mechanistic investigations indicate that the formation of hydrogen‐bonding interaction between Lx and nitroalkenes plays critical roles in the resulting enantioselectivity. This work highlights the significance of chiral microenvironment modulation around metal NPs by chiral ligand decoration for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:Catalysts and ligands possessing the great ability to tolerate over a wide range of mechanistically unrelated reactions are remarked as "privileged", which are rather scarce but extremely meaningful in asymmetric catalysis. Feng and co‐workers have developed a library of conformationally flexible, C2‐symmetric N,N'‐dioxide amide compounds with original design and featured structure (named as Feng ligand now). They were initially reported as chiral organocatalysts in 2005 and further developed as a new class of privileged chiral ligands since 2006. Tremendous success, including versatile coordination chemistry with plenty of metal sources (main‐group metals, transition metals, and rare‐earth metals), a truly broad scope of asymmetric reactions (more than 50 types), diverse areas of catalysis (organocatalysis, Lewis‐acid catalysis, bimetallic relay catalysis, and photocatalysis), numerous synthetic applications of bioactive compounds, has been achieved using Feng N,N'‐dioxide. Besides, they demonstrate that chiral ligands with conformationally flexible property can offer excellent chiral environment as well, which challenges the conventional idea preferring rigid structures in the design of chiral ligands. Herein, we briefly introduced the discovery of Feng ligand and the millstones during the development. Abstract:The authors prepared the heterogeneous chiral catalyst Co(Salen)/SBA-16-C8 or Ru-TsDPEN/SBA-16-2Ph in which a chiral metal complex was entrapped in the cage of SBA-16 by modifying the entrance pore size of the cage using silylation (eq. 1). The catalytic performance of the encapsulated complexes for the asymmetric ring-opening reaction of epoxides [Co(Salen)/SBA-16-C8, eq. 2] and the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones (Ru-TsDPEN/SBA-16-2Ph, eq. 3) were comparable to their homogeneous counterparts.

Abstract:Several new ferrocene-derived bidentate N ligands, which contain multiple chiral factors, have been designed and synthesized by a rational combination of oxazoline and pyridine. Their catalytic performances were investigated preliminarily in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation, and excellent reactivities and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 98% ee) were realized if we used the ligand with a matched chirality. DFT calculations were used to illustrate that an intramolecular hydrogen bond formed between the hydroxyl group and the oxazoline fragment of the ligand contributed to the optimal conformation of the ligand-Pd-allyl complex.

Abstract:Oxy-substituted planar chiral ferrocenes are of greatimportance in asymmetric synthesis and pharmaceu-ticals. However, enantioselective C-H activation offerrocenes that form C-O bonds remains a hugechallenge and has not yet been reported. Herein, theasymmetric synthesis of oxy-substituted planar chi-ral ferrocenes is achieved by cobalt-catalyzed enan-tioselective dehydrogenative C-H acyloxylation. Theuse of a dual-ligand system consisting of a chiralsalicyloxazoline (Salox) ligand and a neutral phos-phine oxide ligand, which is oxidized in situ fromthe corresponding phosphine, resulted in good yield(up to 83%) and excellent enantioselectivity (90-99% ee). The utility of this unprecedented pro-tocol is highlighted by its versatile synthetic trans-formations.

Abstract:In catalytic asymmetric reactions, the formation of chiral molecules generally relies on a direct chirality transfer (point or axial chirality) from a chiral catalyst to products in the stereo-determining step. Herein, we disclose a transient-axial-chirality transfer strategy to achieve asymmetric reaction. This method relies on transferring point chirality from the catalyst to a dirhodium carbene intermediate with axial chirality, namely a transient-axial-chirality since this species is an intermediate of the reaction. The transient chirality is then transferred to the final product by C(sp2)-H functionalization reaction with exceptionally high enantioselectivity. We also generalize this strategy for the asymmetric cascade reaction involving dual carbene/alkyne metathesis (CAM), a transition-metal-catalyzed method to access chiral 9-aryl fluorene frameworks in high yields with up to 99% ee. Detailed DFT calculations shed light on the mode of the transient-axial-chirality transfer and the detailed mechanism of the CAM reaction.

Abstract:The precise construction of chiral molecules is a core research area in chemical science and technology. Abstract:Starting from ferrocene aldehyde and (1R, 2S)-diphenylethylendiamine, (R)-(+)-1,1'-binaphyl-2,2'-diamine, (1S, 2R)-diaminocyclohexane, the corresponding new chiral ferrocenyl shiff bases 1, 2, 3 of C-2-symmetry were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the application of their complexes with Ir, Rh, Ru formed complexes formed in situ as catalysts in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation and the discussion of the effects of the reaction conditions, as well as the structure of ligands and the configuration of products are described.

Since their breakthrough discovery in 2006, chiral frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have risen as a novel catalyst category for a broad range of metal-free asymmetric reactions. This review provides an overview of the remarkable progress made in this field over the past 15 years. The design and synthesis of chiral FLPs and their applications in hydrogenation, hydrosilylation, transfer hydrogenation, and various other reactions are summarized and highlighted.

Abstract:The use of a chiral ligand for stereocontrol has assisted the development of a number of asymmetric functionalization of proximal C–H bonds. Herein, we report a chiral ligand-controlled, asymmetric remote meta-C–H activation of arenes, leading to asymmetric C–H olefination and arylation of hydrocinnamic acid derivatives through desymmetrization with Ac-L-Phe-OH as the chiral ligand using a Pd(II) catalyst. The origins of the enantioselectivity were explained with density functional theory calculations. The larger distortion energy of the substrate part in the C–H bond activation transition structure S-TS1 is the major controlling factor that disfavors the formation of the S-enantiomer product.

Abstract:Planar chiral ferrocenyl phosphines have been employed as highly valuable ligands in metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. However, their preparation remains a formidable challenge due to the requirement for intricate, multistep synthetic sequences. In addressing this issue, we have developed a groundbreaking enantioselective C-H activation strategy facilitated by P(III) directing groups, enabling the efficient construction of planar chiral ferrocenyl phosphines in a single step. Our innovative approach entails the combination of a palladium catalyst, a parent ferrocenyl phosphine, and a chiral phosphoramidite ligand, leading to exceptional reactivity and enantioselectivity. Remarkably, these novel ligands exhibit remarkable efficacy in silver-catalyzed asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions. We carried out a combination of experimental and computational studies to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the reaction pathway and the factors contributing to enantioselectivity.

Abstract:The development of heterogeneous asymmetric catalysts has attracted increasing interest in synthetic chemistry but mostly relies on the immobilization of homogeneous chiral catalysts. Herein, a series of chiral metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been fabricated by anchoring similar chiral hydroxylated molecules (catalytically inactive) with different lengths onto Zr‐oxo clusters in achiral PCN‐222(Cu). The resulting chiral MOFs exhibit regulated enantioselectivity up to 83 % ee in the asymmetric ring‐opening of cyclohexene oxide. The chiral molecules furnished onto the catalytic Lewis sites in the MOF create multilevel microenvironment, including the hydrogen interaction between the substrate and the chiral −OH group, the steric hindrance endowed by the benzene ring on the chiral molecules, and the proximity between the catalytic sites and chiral molecules confined in the MOF pores, which play crucial roles and synergistically promote chiral catalysis. This work nicely achieves heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis by chiral microenvironment modulation around Lewis acid sites.
