Abstract:We present here a new polymerisation route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers. Decarbonylative polyadditions of diyne monomers [bis(4-ethynylphenyl) dimethylsilane, 4,4'-diethynylbiphenyl, and 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene] with respective terephthaloyl dichloride and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl trichloride catalyzed by [Rh(cod) Cl](2)/PPh3, [Rh(nbd)Cl]2/PPh3, [RhCp*Cl-2](2)/PPh3, [Rh(cod)(PPh3)(2)]+PF6-, or [Rh(cod)(PPh2)(CH2)(4)(PPh2)]+BF4- (cod 1,5-cyclooctadiene, nbd 2,5-norbornadiene, Cp* = pentamethyl cyclopentadienyl), proceed smoothly, producing linear and hyperbranched poly(arylene chloro Z-vinylene)s (PACVs) in regio- and stereoselective manners with high molecular weights (absolute M-w up to 5.31 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 92%). Model reactions are designed to confirm the chemical structures of the PACVs. The resultant polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The linear PAVCs can undergo thermal curing at high temperatures and compared with their hyperbranched counterparts, they are more electronically conjugated due to the para-conjugation effect, as revealed by both experimental and theoretical studies. The light emissions of linear PAVCs with twisted tetraphenylethene units are enhanced by aggregate formation, demonstrating an unusual aggregation-enhanced emission characteristic.

Abstract:A facile synthetic route to functional hyperbranched polymers is developed. Arylene bipropiolates (HC C-CO2-Ar-O2C-C CH; 1-4) are readily prepared from a one-step esterification reaction between commercially available propiolic acid and arylene diols. Polycyclotrimerizations of 1-4 proceed regioselectively in reflux dimethylformamide (DMF), giving hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroxy-carbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-P1-hb-P4) of high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 8.3 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 82%). The polymers possess perfect 1,3,5-regiostructures and high degrees of branching (DB similar to 88%). Little weights are lost when the polymers are heated to 390 degrees C under nitrogen or 380 degrees C in air. The polymers are highly transparent, allowing almost all light in the entire visible spectral region to transmit through. Thin solid film of hb-P1 shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.6255-1.681) in the wavelength region of 400-1700 nm, extremely high modified Abbe number (nu(D)' = 1030.7), and very low optical dispersion (D' = 0.00097). Its RI values can be modulated and its thin films can be cross-linked by UV irradiation, enabling ready generation of negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:Cyclotrimerization of alkynes to aromatics represents a promising approach to two-dimensional conjugated networks due to its single-reactant and atom-economy attributes, in comparison with other multicomponent coupling reactions. However, the reaction mechanism of alkyne cyclotrimerization has not yet been well understood due to characterization challenges. In this work, we take a surface reaction approach to study fundamental polymerization mechanism by using a diyne monomer named 4,4'-diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl as a test bed. We have succeeded in directly characterizing reactants, intermediates, and their reaction products with the aid of scanning tunneling microscope, which allows us to gain mechanistic insights into the reaction pathways. By combining with density functional theory calculation, our result has revealed for the first time that the polycyclotrimerization is a two-step [2+2+2] cyclization reaction. This work provides an in-depth understanding of polycyclotrimerization process at the atomic level, offering a new avenue to design and construct of single-atom-thick conjugated networks.

Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:The direct arylation polycondensation (DArP) has become one of the most important methods to construct conjugated polymers (CPs). However, the homocoupling side-reactions of aryl halides and the low regioseletive reactivities of unfunctionalized aryls hinder the development of DArP. Here, an efficient Pd and Cu co-catalyzed DArP was developed via inert C-S bond cleavage of aryl thioethers, of which robustness was exemplified by over twenty conjugated polymers (CPs), including copolymers, homopolymers, and random polymers. The capture of oxidative addition intermediate together with experimental and theoretic results suggested the important role of palladium (Pd) and copper (Cu) co-catalysis with a bicyclic mechanism. The studies of NMR, molecular weights, trap densities, two-dimensional grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (2D-GIWAXS), and the charge transport mobilities revealed that the homocoupling reactions were significantly suppressed with high regioselectivity of unfunctionalized aryls, suggesting this method is an excellent choice for synthesizing high performance CPs.

Abstract:Direct arylation has gained acceptance as an important method for the synthesis of conjugated polymers, given several advantages over traditional cross coupling techniques. However, direct arylation also introduces drawbacks including homocoupling, crosslinking and branching that can lead to poor solubility and electronic properties. These side reactions need to be addressed for direct arylation polymerization (DArP) to be a broadly applicable method for creating high performance conjugated polymers. The problems of the reaction can be circumvented by utilizing monomers with directing groups to prevent unwanted functionalization, blocking any potentially reactive positions or using bulky carboxylic acids. Catalyst design may prove to be important in gaining more control over the side reactions that affect DArP, and even though the tailoring of catalysts has had a profound impact on cross-coupling reactions it often remains overlooked for DArP. Here, we outline how by utilizing a pre-catalyst bound with a phosphine ligand known to promote DArP, a catalytic species that can perform DArP in a controlled fashion when compared to traditional palladium sources was created. The pre-catalyst allowed for the controlled generation of poly(9,9-dioctyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-2,2'bithiophene) (PFBT) with a high Mn and for the facile processing of the material at room temperature in THF while also allowing for lower catalytic-and-phosphine-loadings.

Abstract:The phthalimide (PhI) moiety has been attracting more attention as an excellent acceptor building block in donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers. In this paper; three D-A conjugated polymers with or without thiocarbonyl moieties are successfully prepared by the direct (hetero)-arylation polymerization (DHAP), which is an atom efficient and facile synthetic strategy to obtain polymer materials. Compared with the traditional carbon-carbon coupling reactions, this method possesses more advantages, including: fewer synthetic steps, avoidance of the preparation of the organometallic reagents, higher atom economy and fewer toxic byproducts, better compatibility with chemically sensitive functional groups and so on. All three of these designed PhI-based polymers exhibited favourable optoelectronic and thermal performance. The optical, thermodynamic and electrochemical properties of the synthesized polymers were systematically investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results of these three polymers indicated that thionation of the carbonyl was a highly effective methods to improve the properties of PhI-based polymers; and provided impetus for the development of thionated PhI derivatives for organic electronic applications.

Abstract:High-mobility conjugated polymers (CPs) that can be synthesized in a large scale by direct arylation polycondensation (DArP) are highly desired for printable electronics. To realize this purpose, a readily accessible C–H monomer with high reactivity and selectivity is crucial. Herein, we demonstrated that chlorination enables the efficient DArP of thiophene derivatives, i.e., 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachloro-2,2′-bithiophene (4ClBT) and (E)-1,2-bis(3,4-dichlorothien-2-yl)ethene (4ClTVT), which can be prepared with no more than two steps. No evidence of structure defects was found in the resulting polymers. This finding allows the facile synthesis of high-molecular-weight CPs via DArP. The presence of Cl···S weak intramolecular interaction, which can improve the coplanarity of conjugated skeleton, was confirmed by single-crystal structural analysis. With diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives as C–Br monomers, CPs with electron mobility up to 1.44 cm2 V–1 s–1 in air have been obtained via DArP. Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:3,4‐Appended thiophene monomers furnish unique optoelectronic properties due to electronic and steric effects on the donor unit. Here, we have demonstrated a new polymer synthesis by direct arylation polycondensation of 9,10‐dihydro‐9,10‐[3,4]thiophenoanthracene, a thiophene‐based monomer. Chloride‐promoted direct arylation polycondensation of 9,10‐dihydro‐9,10‐[3,4]thiophenoanthracene with dibromo monomers with acetate in N,N‐dimethylacetamide gave conjugated alternating copolymers. The obtained polymer had a molecular weight of 38,000 and exhibited high film‐forming ability. The optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers were also discussed.

Abstract:Controllable direct C-H arylation with high regioselectivity is highly desirable yet remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile regioselective direct C-H arylation is developed for efficient construction of a variety of symmetrical dithienophthalimide-based π -conjugated molecules. The resulting methodology is applicable to a wide range of substrates, from electron-rich units to electron-deficient units with large steric end groups. Aryl halides have been confirmed to be able to couple with dithienophthalimide (DTI) via direct C-H arylation, showing high regioselectivity. Varying the functional end groups onto the DTI core has been demonstrated to fine tune the emission colors to cover most of the visible spectra. The results suggest a facile strategy towards highly selective direct C-H arylation, opening the prospects towards efficient construction of π -conjugated molecules for various potential optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Direct arylation polycondensation (DArP) has emerged as an eco‐friendly and atom‐efficient methodology for the syntheses of π‐conjugated polymers (CPs). This approach features the direct C−H arylation of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an aryl halide. Given the prevalence of thiophene‐containing CPs, achieving efficient and defect‐free DArP of thiophene‐based C−H monomers is of great significance. This review presents a mechanistic insight into DArP and describes the development of DArP catalytic systems for varied thiophene‐based C−H monomers. Moreover, the control of the primary defects (i.e., branching and homo‐coupling) in thiophene‐based DArP are also elaborated. By emphasizing the principles behind monomer selection and catalytic system optimization, this review intends to provide a framework for future advancements in the DArP of thiophene‐containing CPs. Abstract:Aryl-aryl bond formation constitutes one of the most important subjects in organic synthesis. The recent developments in direct arylation reactions forming aryl-aryl bond have emerged as very attractive alternatives to traditional cross-coupling reactions. Here, we describe a general palladium-catalyzed direct arylation and cyclization of o-iodobiaryls to build a library of tetraphenylenes. This transformation represents one of the very few examples of C-H activation process that involves simultaneous formation of two aryl-aryl bonds. Oxygen plays a vital role by ensuring high reactivity, with air as the promoter furnished the best results. We anticipate this ligand-free and aerobic catalytic system will simplify the synthesis of tetraphenylenes as many of the reported methods involve use of preformed organometallic reagents and will lead to the discovery of highly efficient new direct arylation process.

Abstract:This study focuses on the design concepts that contribute to the C-H activation in bithiophene-flanked monomers incorporating naphthalene diimide (NDI), perylene diimide (PDI), and fluorene (FLU) and their polymerization by direct heteroarylation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal distinct energy requirements for C-H bond abstraction, which is dictated by the electron-withdrawing strength of the central aromatic core flanked by bithiophene. These provide insights into the reactivity of each monomer for C-H bond activation. Proton NMR spectroscopic experimental results confirm the favorable energetic profiles predicted by DFT, with NDI- and PDI-flanked monomers exhibiting lower energy requirements than fluorene-flanked monomers. Successful polymer synthesis is demonstrated for NDI and PDI, while the fluorene-flanked monomer shows challenges due to its higher energy demands.

Abstract:Carbene-involving cross-coupling reactions of N-tosylhydrazones and arylbromides have been introduced into polymer chemistry for the first time, providing a novel method to access a new type of cross-conjugated polymer, poly(arylene-1,1-vinylidene) s (isoPAVs). The pendant double bonds of these cross-conjugated polymers allow for further post-polymerization functionalization. The good thermal stability and remarkable optical properties of these cross-conjugated polymers reveal their potential for applications.

Abstract:While the synthesis of conjugated polymers has received significant attention, the preparation of cross-conjugated polymers, where the pi-electron delocalization cannot extend along the backbone, has received much less success. We have exploited a new catalytic polymerization process and developed the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling enabled synthesis of cross conjugated polymers with readily accessible N-tosylhydrazones and aryl halides. A broad scope of cross-conjugated polymers with good processability and thermal stability has been prepared in high yields using dialkylbiarylphospine-Pd precatalysts. Owing to their unique vinyl structures, these polymers could be easily modified in postpolymerization fashions to impart high degrees of structural complexities. Moreover, these materials were shown to have interesting and tunable optical and conductive properties, featuring their great potentials in a variety of applications.
