Abstract:This programmatic note high-lights a major theme in my lecture notes "Logic in Games"[37]: the need for explicit logics that define agents' strategies, as the drivers of interaction in games. Our text outlines issues, recalls recent results, and raises new open problems. Results are mainly quoted, and the emphasis is on new notions and questions. Abstract:Quite some work in the ATL-tradition uses the differences between various types of strategies (positional, uniform, perfect recall) to give alternative semantics to the same logical language. This paper contributes to another perspective on strategy types, one where we characterise the differences between them on the syntactic (object language) level. This is important for a more traditional knowledge representation view on strategic content. Leaving differences between strategy types implicit in the semantics is a sensible idea if the goal is to use the strategic formalism for model checking. But, for traditional knowledge representation in terms of object language level formulas, we need to extent the language. This paper introduces a strategic STIT syntax with explicit operators for knowledge that allows us to charaterise strategy types. This more expressive strategic language is interpreted on standard ATL-type concurrent epistemic game structures. We introduce rule-based strategies in our language and fruitfully apply them to the representation and characterisation of positional and uniform strategies. Our representations highlight crucial conditions to be met for strategy types. We demonstrate the usefulness of our work by showing that it leads to a critical reexamination of coalitional uniform strategies.

Abstract:What makes a decision strategic? When is strategy most important? This paper formally studies these questions, starting from a (functional) definition of strategy as the smallest set of choices to optimally guide (or force) other choices. The paper shows that this definition coincides with the equilibrium outcome of a “strategy formulation game,” in which such strategy endogenously creates a hierarchy among decisions. With respect to what makes a decision strategic and what makes strategy valuable, the paper considers the effect of commitment, reliability, and irreversibility of a decision; the presence of uncertainty (and the type of uncertainty); the number and strength of its interactions and the centrality of a decision; its level and importance; the development of capabilities; and competition. Abstract:Purpose Research has recognized the importance of middle management in the strategy process. Nonetheless, two questions raised by the involvement of middle management remain largely unexplored; they are central to this study. The first question concerns the conditions of this involvement. Before the 1970s, middle managers were subjected to operational processes. During the 1980s and 1990s they often embodied bureaucratic unwieldiness. How, then, has an actor in an organization migrated from a position excluded from the strategy process to a key position in this process? The second question concerns the functioning of the strategy process itself: what are the conditions of strategic creativity in this type of expanded process? This paper aims to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach The approach taken is that of a longitudinal case study. Findings On the basis of a seven‐year longitudinal case study of strategy practices in a firm facing radical change, this article pinpoints two research results. The first result shows that becoming a strategist is not the simple result of training in strategy techniques. Involvement in the strategy process goes beyond the cognitive dimension; it entails the construction of new systems of roles and identities, along with development of appropriate dialogue modes. The second result is more interesting, and was largely unpredicted. The observations indicate that to achieve the necessary strategic creativity, the strategizing process itself must be transformed. If strategy is envisioned as an emerging social reality made up of strong situations and interactions between strategists, in a dynamic context structured by role systems, spatial and temporal conditions and discourse, developing a new strategy necessitates transformation of its social fabric. Practical implications Understanding the microprocesses at play in the inclusion of middle managers in the strategy process is important to help companies better conceive and apply their policy of including middle managers in the strategy process. This entails the definition of activity content and new skills required, along with career and loyalty building, and of the forms of organization in which middle managers evolve and develop. In this sense, the approach we proposed can be practical for companies and their stakeholders facing these challenges. Originality/value The longitudinal and very detailed case study over a long period of middle managers doing strategy during a radical change situation.
Hyper Strategy Logic

Abstract:Strategy logic (SL) is a powerful temporal logic that enables strategic reasoning in multi-agent systems. SL supports explicit (first-order) quantification over strategies and provides a logical framework to express many important properties such as Nash equilibria, dominant strategies, etc. While in SL the same strategy can be used in multiple strategy profiles, each such profile is evaluated w.r.t. a path-property, i.e., a property that considers the single path resulting from a particular strategic interaction. In this paper, we present Hyper Strategy Logic (HyperSL), a strategy logic where the outcome of multiple strategy profiles can be compared w.r.t. a hyperproperty, i.e., a property that relates multiple paths. We show that HyperSL can capture important properties that cannot be expressed in SL, including non-interference, quantitative Nash equilibria, optimal adversarial planning, and reasoning under imperfect information. On the algorithmic side, we identify an expressive fragment of HyperSL with decidable model checking and present a model-checking algorithm. We contribute a prototype implementation of our algorithm and report on encouraging experimental results.

Abstract:In the reflective Maude specification language, based on rewriting logic, a strategy language has been introduced to control rule rewriting while avoiding complex and verbose metalevel programs. However, just as multiple levels of reflection are required for some metaprogramming tasks, reflective manipulation and generation of strategies are convenient in multiple situations. Some examples of reflective strategy transformations are presented, which implement special forms of evaluation or extend the strategy language while preserving its advantages.

Abstract:Strategy Logic (SL) is a very expressive temporal logic for specifying and verifying properties of multi-agent systems: in SL, one can quantify over strategies, assign them to agents, and express LTL properties of the resulting plays. Such a powerful framework has two drawbacks: first, model checking SL has non-elementary complexity; second, the exact semantics of SL is rather intricate, and may not correspond to what is expected. In this paper, we focus on strategy dependences in SL, by tracking how existentially-quantified strategies in a formula may (or may not) depend on other strategies selected in the formula, revisiting the approach of [Mogavero et al., Reasoning about strategies: On the model-checking problem, 2014]. We explain why elementary dependences, as defined by Mogavero et al., do not exactly capture the intended concept of behavioral strategies. We address this discrepancy by introducing timeline dependences, and exhibit a large fragment of SL for which model checking can be performed in 2-EXPTIME under this new semantics.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce Epistemic Strategy Logic (ESL), an extension of Strategy Logic with modal operators for individual knowledge. This enhanced framework allows us to represent explicitly and to reason about the knowledge agents have of their own and other agents' strategies. We provide a semantics to ESL in terms of epistemic concurrent game models, and consider the corresponding model checking problem. We show that the complexity of model checking ESL is not worse than (non-epistemic) Strategy Logic

Abstract:We identify a pervasive contrast between implicit and explicit stances in logical analysis and system design. Implicit systems change received meanings of logical constants and sometimes also the notion of consequence, while explicit systems conservatively extend classical systems with new vocabulary. We illustrate the contrast for intuitionistic and epistemic logic, then take it further to information dynamics, default reasoning, and other areas, to show its wide scope. This gives a working understanding of the contrast, though we stop short of a formal definition, and acknowledge limitations and borderline cases. Throughout we show how awareness of the two stances suggests new logical systems and new issues about translations between implicit and explicit systems, linking up with foundational concerns about identity of logical systems. But we also show how a practical facility with these complementary working styles has philosophical consequences, as it throws doubt on strong philosophical claims made by just taking one design stance and ignoring alternative ones. We will illustrate the latter benefit for the case of logical pluralism and hyper-intensional semantics.

Abstract:Rewriting logic is a natural and expressive framework for the specification of concurrent systems and logics. The Maude specification language provides an implementation of this formalism that allows executing, verifying, and analyzing the represented systems. These specifications declare their objects by means of terms and equations, and provide rewriting rules to represent potentially non-deterministic local transformations on the state. Sometimes a controlled application of these rules is required to reduce non-determinism, to capture global, goal-oriented or efficiency concerns, or to select specific executions for their analysis. That is what we call a strategy. In order to express them, respecting the separation of concerns principle, a Maude strategy language was proposed and developed. The first implementation of the strategy language was done in Maude itself using its reflective features. After ample experimentation, some more features have been added and, for greater efficiency, the strategy language has been implemented in C++ as an integral part of the Maude system.

Abstract:Notion of strategy in game theory is static and presumably constructed before the game play. The static, pre-determined notion of strategies falls short analyzing perfect information games. Because, we, people, do not strategize as such even in perfect information games - largely because we are not logically omniscient, and we have limited computational power and bounded memory. In this paper, we focus on what we call move updates where some moves become unavailable during the game. Our goal here is to present a formal framework for move based strategy restrictions extending strategy logic which was introduced by Ramanujam and Simon. In this paper, we present a dynamic version of strategy logic, prove its completeness and decidability along with the decidability of the strategy logic which was an open problem so far. We also present an analysis of centipede by using our logic.

Abstract:Abstract Hardly any other management concept sounds as hackneyed as strategy, and at the same time hardly any other concept in organizational science is as vaguely defined. As a means of escaping the conceptual tangle, this article suggests a systems theory-based definition which allows us to sort out the various threads of the strategy discussion. Strategy, according to this interpretation, entails programs that search for the means to achieve previously defined goals. This makes it possible to systematically link classical notions of strategy to discussions concerning organizational theory. Casting the concept of strategy in terms of systems theory enables us to resolve the artificial contradiction between strategy and structure, clarify the relationship between end and means, determine the relationship between a plan and its practical implementation, relativize the importance of strategies, and explain the surprising limitation of the strategy discussion to businesses.

Abstract:Design thinking has emerged as an important way for designers to draw on rich customer insights to enhance their products and services. However, design thinking is now also beginning to influence how corporate managers bring customer data into their day-to-day strategic planning. We call this integration of design thinking into the practice of strategic management “Design-Led Strategy” and show how it complements but extends current design-thinking perspectives. Adopting a strategy-as-practice perspective, this article identifies four archetypal practices that managers can use to strategize with design-thinking content. Its findings provide insight into the practices associated with situating design thinking within organizational practice.

Abstract:Alternating-time temporal logics (ATL/ATL*) represent a family of modal logics for reasoning about agents' strategic abilities in multiagent systems (MAS). The interpretations of ATL/ATL* over the semantic model Concurrent Game Structures (CGS) usually vary depending on the agents' abilities, for instance, perfect vs. imperfect information, perfect vs. imperfect recall, resulting in a variety of variants which have been studied extensively in literature. However, they are defined at the semantic level, which may limit modeling flexibilities and may give counter-intuitive interpretations. To mitigate these issues, in this work, we propose to extend CGS with agents' abilities and study the new semantics of ATL/ATL* under this model. We give PSACE/2EXPTIME model-checking algorithms for ATL/ATL* and implement them as a prototype tool. Experiment results show the practical feasibility of the approach.

A Framework for Understanding and Visualizing Strategies of RL Agents

Abstract:Recent years have seen significant advances in explainable AI as the need to understand deep learning models has gained importance with the increased emphasis on trust and ethics in AI. Comprehensible models for sequential decision tasks are a particular challenge as they require understanding not only individual predictions but a series of predictions that interact with environmental dynamics. We present a framework for learning comprehensible models of sequential decision tasks in which agent strategies are characterized using temporal logic formulas. Given a set of agent traces, we first cluster the traces using a novel embedding method that captures frequent action patterns. We then search for logical formulas that explain the agent strategies in the different clusters. We evaluate our framework on combat scenarios in StarCraft II (SC2), using traces from a handcrafted expert policy and a trained reinforcement learning agent. We implemented a feature extractor for SC2 environments that extracts traces as sequences of high-level features describing both the state of the environment and the agent's local behavior from agent replays. We further designed a visualization tool depicting the movement of units in the environment that helps understand how different task conditions lead to distinct agent behavior patterns in each trace cluster. Experimental results show that our framework is capable of separating agent traces into distinct groups of behaviors for which our approach to strategy inference produces consistent, meaningful, and easily understood strategy descriptions.

Abstract:In this paper we argue that the existing conceptualizations of strategic decision making, while each affording valuable insights, offer only partial and disconnected perspectives of the strategy process that leave important questions un‐addressed. To overcome this problem we develop an empirically grounded conceptualization of strategic decisions as elements of a strategic discourse, operating at both the structural level of social reproduction and the instrumental level of intentional communication, and constituting the medium through which choices are discussed and recorded, interpretations developed and expressed, and strategic actions initiated, authorized and acknowledged. This conceptualization opens up a number of research questions concerning the role of strategic decision making in the overall strategy process and leads to a fruitful conceptualization of strategy itself as a technological and appropriative social practice.

Connecting Logics of Choice and Change

Abstract:This chapter is an attempt at clarifying the current scene of sometimes competing action logics, looking for compatibilities and convergences. Current paradigms for deliberate action fall into two broad families: dynamic logics of events, and STIT logics of achieving specified effects. We compare the two frameworks, and show how they can be related technically by embedding basic STIT into a modal logic of matrix games. Amongst various things, this analysis shows how the attractive principle of independence of agents' actions in STIT might actually be a source of high complexity in the total action logic. Our main point, however, is the compatibility of dynamic logics with explicit events and STIT logics based on a notion that we call 'control'-and we present a new system of dynamic-epistemic logic with control that has both. Finally, we discuss how dynamic logic and STIT face similar issues when including further crucial aspects of agency such as knowledge, preference, strategic behavior, and explicit acts of choice and deliberation.

Abstract:We define and investigate a property of mechanisms that we call "strategic simplicity," and that is meant to capture the idea that, in strategically simple mechanisms, strategic choices require limited strategic sophistication. We define a mechanism to be strategically simple if choices can be based on first-order beliefs about the other agents' preferences and first-order certainty about the other agents' rationality alone, and there is no need for agents to form higher-order beliefs, because such beliefs are irrelevant to the optimal strategies. All dominant strategy mechanisms are strategically simple. But many more mechanisms are strategically simple. In particular, strategically simple mechanisms may be more flexible than dominant strategy mechanisms in the bilateral trade problem and the voting problem.

Abstract:The model checking problem for multi-agent systems against Strategy Logic specifications is known to be non-elementary. On this logic several fragments have been defined to tackle this issue but at the expense of expressiveness. In this paper, we propose a three-valued semantics for Strategy Logic upon which we define an abstraction method. We show that the latter semantics is an approximation of the classic two-valued one for Strategy Logic. Furthermore, we extend MCMAS, an open-source model checker for multi-agent specifications, to incorporate our abstraction method and present some promising experimental results.
