Abstract:The temperature-(T-)magnetic-field (H) phase diagram for the noncentrosymmetric compound YbFeP, determined from electrical resistivity (rho), specific heat (C), and magnetization (M) measurements on single crystal specimens, is reported. This system exhibits a crossover from a magnetically ordered non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phase at low H to another NFL phase at higher H. The crossover occurs near the value of H where the magnetic ordering temperature (T-M) is no longer observable in C(T, H)/T and rho(T, H), but not where T-M extrapolates smoothly to T = 0 K at a possible quantum critical point (QCP). This indicates the occurrence of a quantum phase transition between the two NFL phases. The lack of a clear relationship between the extrapolated QCP and NFL behavior suggests an unconventional route to the NFL ground states.

Abstract:We report the temperature-pressure (T - P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.
A Novel Magnetic Material by Design: Observation of Yb3+ with Spin-1/2 and Possible Superconducting Trace in YbxPt5P

Abstract:The localized f-electrons enrich the magnetic properties in rare-earth-based intermetallics. Among those, compounds with heavier 4d and 5d transition metals are even more fascinating because anomalous electronic properties may be induced by the hybridization of 4f and itinerant conduction electrons primarily from the d orbitals. Here, we describe the observation of trivalent Yb3+ with S = 1/2 at low temperatures in YbxPt5P, the first of a new family of materials. YbxPt5P (0.20< x <1) phases were synthesized and structurally characterized. They exhibit a large homogeneity width with the Yb ratio exclusively occupying the 1a site in the anti-CeCoIn5 structure. Moreover, the resistivity measurement of a sample analyzed as Yb0.25Pt5P shows it to exist a complete zero-resistance transition with a critical transition temperature of ~0.6 K, possible superconductivity. However, the zero-resistivity transition was not observed in YbPt5P with antiferromagnetic ordering existing solely. First-principles electronic structure calculations substantiate the antiferromagnetic ground state and indicate that 2D nesting around the Fermi level may give rise to exotic physical properties, such as superconductivity. YbxPt5P appears to be a unique case among materials.

Abstract:We report extensive measurements on a new compound (Yb0.24Sn0.76) Ru that crystallizes in the cubic CsCl structure. Valence-band photoemission (PES) and L-3 x-ray absorption show no divalent component in the 4f configuration of Yb. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) indicates that the eight-fold degenerate J-multiplet of Yb3+ is split by the crystalline electric field (CEF) into a Gamma(7)-doublet ground state and a Gamma(8) quartet at an excitation energy 20 meV. The magnetic susceptibility can be fit very well by this CEF scheme under the assumption that a Gamma(6)-excited state resides at 32 meV; however, the Gamma(8)/Gamma(6) transition expected at 12 meV was not observed in the INS. The resistivity follows a Bloch-Gruneisen law shunted by a parallel resistor, as is typical of systems subject to phonon scattering with no apparent magnetic scattering. All of these properties can be understood as representing simple local moment behavior of the trivalent Yb ion. At 1 K there is a peak in specific heat that is too broad to represent a magnetic-phase transition, consistent with absence of magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction. On the other hand this peak also is too narrow to represent the Kondo effect in the Gamma(7)-doublet ground state. On the basis of the field dependence of the specific heat, we argue that antiferromagnetic (AF) short-range order (SRO) (possibly coexisting with Kondo physics) occurs at low temperatures. The long-range magnetic order is suppressed because the Yb site occupancy is below the percolation threshold for this disordered compound.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experiment on a rare-earth material YbMgGaO$_4$ [Y. Li \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{115}, 167203 (2015)], which found that the ground state of YbMgGaO$_4$ is a quantum spin liquid, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic spin-$1/2$ model that was proposed to describe YbMgGaO$_4$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method in combination with the exact diagonalization, we calculate a variety of physical quantities, including the ground-state energy, the fidelity, the entanglement entropy and spin-spin correlation functions. Our studies show that in the quantum phase diagram there is a $120^{\circ}$ phase and two distinct stripe phases. The transitions from the two stripe phases to the $120^{\circ}$ phase are of the first order. However, the transition between the two stripe phases is not the first order, which is different from its classical counterpart. Additionally, we find no evidence for a quantum spin liquid in this model. Our results suggest that additional terms may be also important to model the material YbMgGaO$_4$. These findings will stimulate further experimental and theoretical works in understanding the quantum spin liquid ground state in YbMgGaO$_4$.
Fermi Surface Reconstruction and Multiple Quantum Phase Transitions in the Antiferromagnet CeRhIn 5

Abstract:Conventional, thermally driven continuous phase transitions are described by universal critical behavior that is independent of the specific microscopic details of a material. However, many current studies focus on materials that exhibit quantum-driven continuous phase transitions (quantum critical points, or QCPs) at absolute zero temperature. The classification of such QCPs and the question of whether they show universal behavior remain open issues. Here we report measurements of heat capacity and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic QCP (Bc0 ≈ 50 T) in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn5. A sharp, magnetic-field-induced change in Fermi surface is detected both in the dHvA effect and Hall resistivity at B0* ≈ 30 T, well inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Comparisons with band-structure calculations and properties of isostructural CeCoIn5 suggest that the Fermi-surface change at B0* is associated with a localized-to-itinerant transition of the Ce-4f electrons in CeRhIn5. Taken in conjunction with pressure experiments, our results demonstrate that at least two distinct classes of QCP are observable in CeRhIn5, a significant step toward the derivation of a universal phase diagram for QCPs.

Abstract:The R(H) and Jc(T) of single phase material Bi3PbCa3Sr3Cu4Oy were investigated. As the temperature belows 65K, the sample likely shows the characteristics of homogeneous superconductors. Very high critical current density and no negative magnetoresistance are observed. This distinct property distinguishes the new material from other ceramic superconductors.

Abstract:Significance Quantum materials have properties that defy conventional theories of solids. Explaining these unusual properties is a frontier in physics, which promises both technological applications and fundamentally new states of matter. Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 is a center of attention in this work. While it becomes ferromagnetic at very low temperature, its excitation spectrum resembles that of a quantum spin liquid. We show using neutron scattering on high-quality crystals that the unusual spectra may arise as a superposition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin waves. This indicates that these disparate forms of magnetism actually coexist in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is consistent with near-perfect degeneracy. The unconventional properties of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 thus appear to arise from the atomic-scale interplay between two conventional types of order.

Flat Bands at the Fermi Level in Unconventional Superconductor YFe2Ge2

Abstract:We report heavy electron behavior in unconventional superconductor YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ ($T_C \,{=}\, 1.2$ K). We directly observe very heavy bands ($m_\mathrm{eff}\sim 25 m_e$) within $\sim$10 meV of the Fermi level $E_{F}$ using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The flat bands reside at the X points of the Brillouin zone and are composed principally of $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. We utilize many-body perturbative theory, GW, to calculate the electronic structure of this material, obtaining excellent agreement with the ARPES data with relatively minor band renormalizations and band shifting required. We obtain further agreement at the Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) level, highlighting the emergence of the many-body physics at low energies (near $E_F$) and temperatures.

Unusual Ground State Properties of the Kondo-Lattice Compound Yb2Ir3Ge5

Abstract:We report sample preparation, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies of a new compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$. We find that this compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with a space group PMMN unlike the compound Ce$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ which crystallizes in the tetragonal IBAM (U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type) structure. Our resistivity measurements indicate that the compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ behaves like a typical Kondo lattice system with no ordering down to 0.4 K. However, a Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse magnetic susceptibility above 100 K gives an effective moment of only 3.66 $\mu$$_B$ which is considerably less than the theoretical value of 4.54 $\mu$$_B$ for magnetic Yb$^3+$ ions. The value of $\theta_{P}$ = -15.19 K is also considerably higher indicating the presence of strong hybridization. An upturn in the low temperature heat capacity gives an indication that the system may order magnetically just below the lowest temperature of our heat capacity measurements (0.4 K). The structure contains two sites for Yb ions and the present investigation suggests that Yb may be trivalent in one site while it may be significantly lower (close to divalent) in the other.

Abstract:Rare-earth chalcohalide REChX (RE = rare earth; Ch = O, S, Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I) is a newly reported family of Kitaev spin liquid candidates. The family offers a platform where a strong spin-orbit coupling meets a van der Waals layered and undistorted honeycomb spin lattice, which outputs highly anisotropic exchange couplings required by the Kitaev model. YbOCl is the first single crystal of the family we grew, with a size up to ∼15mm . We have performed magnetization and high magnetic field electron spin resonance measurements from 2 to 300 K. We develop the mean-field scenario for the anisotropic spin system, with which we are able to well describe the experiments and reliably determine the fundamental parameters. The self-consistent simulations give the anisotropic spin-exchange interactions of J± ( ∼−0.3K ) and Jzz ( ∼1.6K ), and g factors of gab ( ∼3.4 ) and gc ( ∼2.9 ). Based on the spin-exchange interactions, we employ the exact diagonalization method to work out the ground state phase diagram of YbOCl in terms of the off-diagonal exchange couplings. Collapse of the Kondo State and Ferromagnetic Quantum Phase Transition in YbFe2Zn20

Abstract:We present the electrical resistivity data under application of pressures up to similar to 26 GPa and down to 50 mK on YbFe2Zn20. We find a pressure induced magnetic phase transition with an onset at p(c) = 18.2 +/- 0.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, YbFe2Zn20 manifests a heavy fermion, nonmagnetic ground state and the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. As pressure is increased, the power law exponent in resistivity, n, deviates significantly from Fermi liquid behavior and tends to saturate with n = 1 near p(c). A pronounced resistivity maximum T-max, which scales with the Kondo temperature, is observed. T-max decreases with increasing pressure and flattened out near p(c) indicating the suppression of Kondo exchange interaction. For p > p(c), T-max shows a sudden upward shift, most likely becoming associated with crystal electric field scattering. Application of magnetic field for p > p(c) broadens the transition and shifts it toward the higher temperature, which is a typical behavior of a transition towards a ferromagnetic state, or a state with a significant ferromagnetic component. The magnetic transition appears to abruptly develop above p(c) suggesting probable first-order (with changing pressure) nature of the transition; once stabilized, the ordering temperature does not depend on pressure up to similar to 26 GPa. Taken as a whole, these data suggest that YbFe2Zn20 has a quantum phase transition at p(c) = 18.2 GPa associated with the avoided quantum criticality in metallic ferromagnets.
Raman spectroscopic study of an apparent phase transition at 234K in the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3−xVxO7−y

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy of the high-T c family YBa 2 Cu 3−x V x O 7−y with y=0.1 and x from 0 to 0.6 shows the emergence of a mode at 644 cm −1 as temperature decreases below T o = 234K. This mode was first observed by Macfarlane, Rosen and Seki [Sol. St. Commun. 63 , 831 (1987)] at low temperatures and correctly interpreted, we believe, as a nominally forbidden odd-parity LO phonon by Liu et at. (Sol. St. Commun. 63 , 839 (1987)]. However, its temperature dependence has not been analyzed before. We show that it correlates very strongly with sound velocity anomalies (3% decrease) and ultrasonic attenuation divergences reported near 234K by Wang Yening et al. (J. Phys. C: Solid State, 1987 in press). We interpret this as a continuous or nearly continuous phase transition at 234K, probably from D 2h to C 2v point group symmetry (Pmmm→Pmm2) involving oxygen octahedron rotation and the consequent loss of a mirror plane. There is independent evidence for such a C 2y structure in the TEM study by Beyers et al. (Appl. Phys. Lett., 1987 in press).
Magnetic Excitations in the Ground State of Yb2Ti2O7

Abstract:We report an extensive study on the zero field ground state of a powder sample of the pyrochlore $\mathrm{Yb_2Ti_2O_7}$. A sharp heat capacity anomaly that labels a low temperature phase transition in this material is observed at 280 mK. Neutron diffraction shows that a \emph{quasi-collinear} ferromagnetic order develops below $T_\mathrm{c}$ with a magnetic moment of $0.87(2)\mu_\mathrm{B}$. High resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements show, below the phase transition temperature, sharp gapped low-lying magnetic excitations coexisting with a remnant quasielastic contribution likely associated with persistent spin fluctuations. Moreover, a broad inelastic continuum of excitations at $\sim0.6$ meV is observed from the lowest measured temperature up to at least 2.5 K. At 10 K, the continuum has vanished and a broad quasielastic conventional paramagnetic scattering takes place at the observed energy range. Finally, we show that the exchange parameters obtained within the framework of linear spin-wave theory do not accurately describe the observed zero field inelastic neutron scattering data.

The Superconductivity and Phase Transition of the YBa2Cu3O7−y System with Transitional Structure from Tetragonal Phase to Orthorhombic Phase

Abstract:The intermediate YBa2Cu3O7-δsamples of single phase with transitional structure from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase are prepared by quenching at different temperatures and investigated systematically. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), R-T curve and ac susceptibility measurements, it can be concluded that the structure transits from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase as the quenching temperature decreases; the YBa2Cu3O7-δ samples with tetragonal phase are nonsuperconductive till 4.2K; the critical temperature depends on the degree of orthorhombic distortion in the intermediate samples; the possible existence of a structure phase transition near 100K for the non-superconductive tetragonal phase is discovered for the first time. The electrical conductance property at high temperature region (higher than 100K) for the samples quenched at higher temperature can be explained in terms of the affection of oxygen vacancies.
Optical Studies on the Phase Transitions in YBaMn 2 O 6 Single Crystals

Abstract:The double perovskite YBaMn2O6 exhibited complex structural, magnetic, and charge/orbital ordering phase transitions. In this paper, we investigated the correlation between the temperature-dependent optical response and complex phase transitions of YBaMn2O6 single crystals through spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The room temperature optical absorption spectrum of YBaMn2O6 revealed three bands of approximately 1.50, 4.05, and 5.49 eV. The lowest optical absorption band was assigned to on-site d–d transitions in Mn ions, whereas the other two optical features were assigned to charge-transfer transitions between the 2p states of O and 3d states of Mn. The room temperature Raman scattering spectrum revealed 25 phonon modes. Notably, the MnO6 octahedral tilting and bending modes between 360 and 440 cm–1 increased in intensity at temperatures <200 K. Furthermore, several new phonon peaks appeared at temperatures <200 K, which were associated with charge ordering. Additionally, the magnetic order-induced changes were observed in the breathing modes, with reduced intensity of the 620 cm–1 and a substantial enhancement of the 644 cm–1 phonon peaks. The Jahn–Teller mode at approximately 496 cm–1 exhibited strong hardening at temperatures <200 K, which indicated a linear correlation with the square of the magnetic susceptibility and thus revealed the occurrence of spin–phonon coupling. Anomalies in the phonon frequency, line width, and intensity observed near the phase transition temperatures highlighted the importance of lattice–charge–spin interactions in YBaMn2O6.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
