Abstract:Gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer globally and the second highest cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. In Taiwan, the malignancy is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Proper screening can help facilitate the detection of gastric cancer before symptom development at a curable stage. Recently, knowledge of the biomarkers implicated in gastric carcinoma has increased. Determination of the expression profiles of pivotal molecules in the oncogenic pathways involved in gastric cancer carcinogenesis may aid in the diagnosis and prediction of tumor progression. In our previous studies, we have identified several markers over-expressed in gastric cancer. Several of highly upregulated genes: secreted protein and rich in cysteine (SPARC, osteonectins), SLPI (secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand (CXCL)-1, CXCR-2, and Glyoxalase I (GLO I) were discussed. In addition, it will help to understand the mechanisms of gastric cancer progression involve in multiple steps or require a combination of altered expressions of genes.
