Abstract:When an atom or molecule is illuminated by a short laser pulse, the intense electric field couples different electronic states promptly and alters the final products. Detecting such interaction processes in a time-resolved way requires techniques with unprecedented time resolution and is important for applications such as coherent chemical reaction control. Here by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we demonstrate that the time evolution of complex amplitudes of bound electronic states during the interaction with an optical laser pulse can be extracted with high accuracy using attosecond streaking.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the dynamic evolution of electrons in matter is among the most fundamental goals of attosecond science. While the most exotic behaviors can be found in complex systems, fast electron dynamics can be studied at the fundamental level in atomic systems, using moderately intense (≲103 W/cm2) lasers to control the electronic structure in proof-of-principle experiments. Here, we probe the transient changes in the absorption of an isolated attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse by helium atoms in the presence of a delayed, few-cycle near infrared (NIR) laser pulse, which uncovers absorption structures corresponding to laser-induced “virtual” intermediate states in the two-color two-photon (XUV+NIR) and three-photon (XUV+NIR+NIR) absorption process. These previously unobserved absorption structures are modulated on half-cycle (~1.3 fs) and quarter-cycle (~0.6 fs) timescales, resulting from quantum optical interference in the laser-driven atom.

Abstract:Based on the numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation within the single-active-electron approximation, we propose a method for observing instantaneous atomic level shifts in an oscillating strong infrared (IR) field with sub-IR-cycle time resolution, by using a single tunable attosecond (SA) pulse to probe excited states of the perturbed atom. The ionization probability in the combined fields depends on both the frequency of the attosecond pulse and the time delay between both pulses, since the IR field periodically shifts SA-pulse-excited energy levels into and out of resonance.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-optical method for time-domain characterization of ultrashort optical pulses using nonionizing lasers. A moderately intense laser pulse couples the doubly excited states of helium and induces the ac Stark effect. A synchronized weak signal field perturbs the coupling process and alters the quasienergies of the dressed atom, upon which the carrier oscillation of the signal field is encoded. The nonionizing lasers used in current approach minimize plasma-induced pulse distortion and provide a complementary detection scheme for effective and reliable optical oscilloscope.

Abstract:An ultrafast intense laser field is one of the most important tools to observe and manipulate electronic and nuclear dynamics with subcycle precision in highly nonlinear light-matter interactions, which provides access to attosecond chemistry and physics. In this review, we briefly summarize the protocol of attosecond chronoscopy and its application in probing the attosecond photoemission dynamics from atoms and molecules. We also review the control schemes of attosecond electron motion in atoms and molecules as well as molecular bond formation and cleavage with the assistance of tailored femtosecond laser fields.

Abstract:A new method to coherently control the electron dynamics is proposed using a few-cycle laser pulse in combination with a controlling field. It is shown that this method not only broadens the attosecond pulse bandwidth, but also reduces the chirp, then an isolated 80-as pulse is straightforwardly obtained and even shorter pulse is achievable by increasing the intensity of the controlling field. Such ultrashort pulses allow one to investigate ultrafast electronic processes which have never be achieved before. In addition, the few-cycle synthesized pulse is expected to manipulate a wide range of laser-atom interactions.

Abstract:Double core-holes (DCHs) show remarkable and sensitive effects for understanding electron correlations and coherence. With advanced modulation of x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility, we propose the forthcoming all-attosecond XFEL pump-probe spectroscopy can decipher the hidden photon-initiated dynamics of DCHs. The benchmark case of neon is investigated, and norm-nonconserving Monte-Carlo wavefunction method simulates non-Hermitian dynamics among vast states, which shows superiority in efficiency and reliability. In our scheme, population transfer to DCHs is sequentially irradiated by pump and probe laser. By varying time delay, Stark shifts and quantum path interference of resonant lines sensitively emerge at specific interval of two pulses. These ubiquitous multi-channel effects are also observed in phase-fluctuating pulses, derived from extra phases of impulsive Raman processes by pump laser. Non-perturbation absorption/emission verifies the uniquely interchangeable role of two pules in higher intensity. Our results reveal sensitive and robust responses on pulse parameters, which show potential capacity for XFEL attosecond pulse diagnosis and further attosecond-timescale chemical analysis.

Strong-field Ionization Inducing Multi-Electron-hole Coherence Probed by Attosecond Pulses

Abstract:We propose a new scenario to apply IR-pump-XUV-probe schemes to resolving strong field ionization induced and attosecond pulse driven electron-hole dynamics and coherence in real time. The coherent driving of both the infrared laser and the attoscond pulse correlates the dynamics of the core-hole and the valence-hole which leads to the otherwise forbidden absorption and emission of XUV photon. An analytical model is developed based on the strong-field approximation by taking into account of the essential multielectron configurations. The emission spectra from the core-valence transition and the core-hole recombination are found modulating strongly as functions of the time delay between the two pulses, which provides a unique insight into the instantaneous ionization and the interplay of the multi-electron-hole coherence.

Abstract:We report attosecond-scale probing of the laser-induced dynamics in molecules. We apply the method of high-harmonic spectroscopy, where laser-driven recolliding electrons on various trajectories record the motion of their parent ion. Based on the transient phase-matching mechanism of high-order harmonic generation, short and long trajectories contributing to the same harmonic order are distinguishable in both the spatial and frequency domains, giving rise to a one-to-one map between time and photon energy for each trajectory. The short and long trajectories in H-2 and D-2 are used simultaneously to retrieve the nuclear dynamics on the attosecond and angstrom scale. Compared to using only short trajectories, this extends the temporal range of the measurement to one optical cycle. The experiment is also applied to methane and ammonia molecules.

Abstract:In this review, we will focus on the theoretical aspects in observing and controlling the electronic dynamics in few-electron atoms and molecules by attosecond pulses in different circumstances. In particular, we will first review the main theoretical methods and concepts in strong field and attosecond physics, and then discuss a number of topics including generation of xuv light sources, the probe and steering of the electron motion in the combination of xuv and IR pulses, the photoionization time delay, the electron–electron correlation dynamics in multiple-electron atoms and molecules, etc. Although the present review mainly concentrates on the theoretical aspects, in each section we will also give a brief account of the related experimental implications and implementations for those which have been demonstrated so far or which will be experimentally feasible in the near future.

Abstract:The past thirty years witnessed rapid developing of strong field physics that leads to the first generation of attosecond (10(-18) s) pulses. The duration of available pulses has recently been reduced to less than 100 as, approaching the Kepler period of a classical electron revolving around the nucleus. For the first time, electron motions inside atoms, molecules and solids can be traced, probed and even steered in real time. It pushed the study on ultrafast dynamic processes into a new frontier, giving birth to attosecond physics. The development of attosecond pulses provides unprecedented coherent ultrashort XUV (extreme ultra-violet) of soft X-ray sources that enable imaging the atomic structure and resolving the related quantum dynamics for matter science. In particular, it allows the probing and monitoring of electron dynamics in the natural time scale of attoseconds with atomic spatial resolution. The generation and applications of attosecond pulses are directly related to the control and manipulation of the sub-cycle electron dynamics. Recent studies on the correlated multielectron dynamics have provided insight into the optical and dynamical properties of matter in the perspectives of time, phase and entanglement. It deepens our understanding on some of the fundamental questions, e.g., how the single or multiple photons are absorbed and how short are the quantum processes such as photoionization, tunneling ionization and charge migration. Although currently attosecond pulses are limited by the flux and pulse duration, the combination of attosecond pulses with intense infrared laser pulses paves new ways of controlling and probing electron dynamics in the domains of energy, time and space that lays the foundation for petahertz optoelectronics and attosecond pulse based transient spectroscopy. In this review, we will first briefly summarize the advancement of strong field and ultrafast physics including the relevant experimental findings, the theoretical explorations, the related technologies and the possible applications. Then we focus on the sub-cycle electron or multielectron dynamics and their manifestation on the ionization and coherent radiation properties. We start with the time behavior of Fano resonance and how it can be probed in time domain. In section 2, the correlated electron dynamics is discussed in term of anti-screening effect and Pauli effect that influence strong field ionization and high harmonic generation processes. In section 3, the coherent emission with frequency from terahertz to soft XUV and their joint measurement are discussed by emphasizing the generation mechanism of terahertz wave in two-color laser pulses. The developed high-harmonic and terahertz wave spectroscopy (HATS) is shown capable of imaging the molecular structure and dynamics. In section 4, the time-resolving of electron and hole dynamics and their coherence is proposed based on attosecond transient absorption technique. The coherence of ionization and the correlated electron dynamics is hinted crucial for electron-hole interaction. The topics are very limited and mainly selected from the perspectives of our group.
Probing dipole-forbidden autoionizing states by isolated attosecond pulses

Abstract:We propose a general technique to retrieve the information of dipole-forbidden resonances in the autoionizing region. In the simulation, a helium atom is pumped by an isolated attosecond pulse in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) combined with a few-femtosecond laser pulse. The excited wave packet consists of the $^1S$, $^1P$, and $^1D$ states, including the background continua, near the $2s2p(^1P)$ doubly excited state. The resultant electron spectra with various laser intensities and time delays between the EUV and laser pulses are obtained by a multilevel model and an ab initio time-dependent Schrödinger equation calculation. By taking the ab initio calculation as a "virtual measurement", the dipole-forbidden resonances are characterized by the multilevel model. We found that in contrast to the common assumption, the nonresonant coupling between the continua plays a significant role in the time-delayed electron spectra, which shows the correlation effect between photoelectrons before they leave the core. This technique takes the advantages of ultrashort pulses uniquely and would be a timely test for the current attosecond technology.

Abstract:We propose the scheme of temporal double-slit interferometer to precisely measure the electric field of shaped intense femtosecond laser pulse directly, and apply it to control the electron tunneling wave packets in attosecond precision. By manipulating the spectra phase of the input femtosecond pulse in frequency domain, one single pulse is split into two sub-pulses whose waveform can be precisely controlled by adjusting the spectra phase. When the shaped pulse interacts with atoms, the two sub-pulses are analogous to the Young's double-slit in time domain. The interference pattern in the photoelectron momentum distribution can be used to precisely retrieve the peak electric field and the time delay between two sub-pulses. Based on the precise characterization of the shaped pulse, we demonstrate that the sub-cycle dynamics of electron can be controlled with attosecond precision. The above scheme is proved to be feasible by both quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo simulations and numerical solutions of three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:Attosecond transient absorption resolves the instantaneous response of a quantum system as it interacts with a laser field, by mapping its sub-cycle dynamics onto the absorption spectrum of attosecond pulses. However, the quantum dynamics are imprinted in the amplitude, phase and polarization state of the attosecond pulses. Here we introduce attosecond transient interferometry and measure the transient phase, as we follow its evolution within the optical cycle. We demonstrate how such phase information enables us to decouple the multiple quantum paths induced in a light-driven system, isolating their coherent contribution and retrieving their temporal evolution. Applying attosecond transient interferometry reveals the Stark shift dynamics in helium and retrieves long-term electronic coherences in neon. Finally, we present a vectorial generalization of our scheme, theoretically demonstrating the ability to isolate the underlying anomalous current in light-driven topological materials. Our scheme provides a direct insight into the interplay of light-induced dynamics and topology. Attosecond transient interferometry holds the potential to considerably extend the scope of attosecond metrology, revealing the underlying coherences in light-driven complex systems.

Abstract:Frontiers of attosecond science are constantly shifting, thus addressing more and more intricate effects with increasing resolution. Ultrashort pulses offer a practical way to prepare complex superpositions of quantum states, follow, and steer their dynamics. In this contribution, an ultrafast spin-flip process triggered by sub-femtosecond (fs) excitation and strong spin-orbit coupling between 2p core-excited states of a transition metal complex is investigated using density matrix-based time-dependent restricted active space configuration interaction theory. The effect of the nuclear vibrations is incorporated making use of an electronic system plus vibrational bath partitioning. The differences between isolated sub-fs pulses and pulse trains as well as influence of various pulse characteristics on the initiated dynamics are discussed. The effect under study can be potentially used for ultrafast clocking in sub-few fs experiments.

Abstract:With the fast development of intense laser technologies, a lot of new phenomena in la- ser-matter interactions have been experimentally observed and successfully explained by various theories and simulations. One of the specular processes is high-order harmonic generation (HHG), in which atoms and molecules can emit photons with energies equal to multiple of the fundamental laser photon energy. By synthesizing several neighboring orders of HHG spectra near its cutoff, experimentalists have been able to generate laser pulses of duration in the attosecond time scale (1 as = 10~(-18) s). The availability of attosecond pulses has opened a drastically new regime of ultrafast sciences, where it is possible for scientists to trace and control the motion of electrons on its natural scale. After the fruitful developments of femtosciences in the last two decades, the newly opened attosecond science is another big jump of human being to understand and control the internal dynamics of atoms and molecules. In this paper, we will give a brief review of what we have done in recent years, especially about tracing and controlling the electronic motion of atoms and molecules by attosecond pulses.

Abstract:Optical pulses are routinely used to drive dynamical changes in the properties of solids. In quantum materials, many new phenomena have been discovered, including ultrafast transitions between electronic phases, switching of ferroic orders and nonequilibrium emergent behaviors such as photo-induced superconductivity. Understanding the underlying non-equilibrium physics requires detailed measurements of multiple microscopic degrees of freedom at ultrafast time resolution. Femtosecond x-rays are key to this endeavor, as they can access the dynamics of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Here, we cover a series of representative experimental studies in which ultrashort x-ray pulses from free electron lasers have been used, opening up new horizons for materials research.
