Abstract:The mechanism of gold solvent extraction from KAu(CN) 2 solution was investigated by means of FTIR, EXAFS, ICP and radioactive tracer methods. Two extraction systems were studied, namely N263-tributyl phosphate(TBP)-n-dodecane and N263-iso-octanol-n-dodecane. High-resolution FT IR spectroscopy indicated that the CN stretching vibrations of the two extraction systems differred greatly. In order to interpret the significant difference in CN stretching vibrations, two extracting species models are proposed—supramolecular structures based on the formation of hydrogen bonds between Au(CN) 2- and modifiers such as TBP and iso-octanol.

Abstract:The microstructures of loaded organic phases of three quaternary amine solvent extraction systems for gold, which were N263-xylene, N263-tributyl phosphate (TBP)-dodecane and N263-2-ethylhexanol (isooctanol)-dodecane (N263-trialkylmethylammonium chloride; alkyl=C-8-C-10), were studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. According to the EXAFS results, it was found that the gold coordination environment was the same before and after extraction. However, the C=N stretching vibrations of Au(CN)(2)(-) in the three systems differed greatly. The second derivative spectra of C=N stretching bands of Au(CN)(2)(-) were also found to be different. In order to explain the differences in the IR characteristics of C=N in the three extraction systems, three microstructure models are proposed. For the N263-xylene system, the model is a simple ion pair. For the other two systems with a modifier (TBP and isooctanol), the models are two supramolecular structures based on hydrogen bonding between the modifier and Au(CN)(2)(-). Some related work such as on the hydration of acetonitrile and the fine structure of C=N in solid KAu(CN)(2) was also performed in order to offer additional supporting evidence for the reliability of the proposed models.

Abstract:Gold solvent extraction has been used to recover gold by analytical chemists for about one century. Due to the potential advantages of solvent extraction technology over present zinc-dust cementation and carbon-adsorption procedures in gold recovery, metallurgists have paid much attention to the study of gold solvent extraction in recent years. Some promising extraction systems were proposed and studied. Recently some new progress in gold solvent extraction have been achieved in our research group. In the mechanism study on quaternary amine extraction system, a supramolecular structure model based on hydrogen bonding between modifier and Au(CN)(2)(-) was proposed. For the stripping of quaternary amine extraction system, a procedure based on NaClO4 solution and saturated KCl solution was reported.

Abstract:Solvent extraction of Au(I) from alkaline cyanide solution containing several milligram per liter of gold was investigated with column-shaped extraction equipment using tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) as extractant with addition of quaternary ammonium salt, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), directly into the aurous aqueous phase in advance. The influences of the volume of TBP and the NaCl concentration in the aurous aqueous phase on Au(I) extraction were investigated. The experimental results for treating 50 L of synthetic auro-cyanide solution containing 10 mg/L Au(I) and for treating real auro-cyanide leaching liquor by CTAB/TBP system were reported. The results obtained establish that the column-shaped extraction equipment was suitable for extracting Au(I) from low content auro- cyanide solution at high aqueous/organic phase ratio, and that more than 97% of gold(I) could be extracted while the Au(I) concentration in the raffinate was less than 0.3 mg/L. In addition, the stripping of Au(I) from the loaded organic phase and the recycle of the organic phase were also discussed.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium salt has strong affinity with gold in cyanide solutions, but it is not readily stripped. Stripping with acidic thiourea solutions and air sparging shows promise. There are some reports on the process of thiourea stripping, but little about its mechanism. In this paper, the stripping mechanism of N-263/sulphuric thiourea/alkaline cyanide gold solution is studied by EXAFS. According to the experiments, sulphuric acid, thiourea and gold-thiourea complex can be extracted by N-263 as a neutral molecule, and the stripping process can be described as following: (1) Sulphuric acid and thiourea are extracted by N-263; (2) In organic phase, gold-cyanide complex is converted to gold-thiourea complex, which exists as Au[SC(NH2)(2)](2)HSO4, and CN- forms HCN with acid at the same time; (3) HCN is removed by air sparging, and Au [ SC(NH2)(2)](2)HSO4 is distributed between organic phase and liquor phase, most of which transfers to liquor phase and is stripped.

Abstract:The mechanism of extraction of gold by tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (TDMBAC)/tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP)/n-heptane solution from an aqueous alkaline cyanide solution was studied by means of extraction equilibrium, Karl Fischer titration, electrical conductivity, FTIR spectroscopy and dynamic laser scattering (DLS). When the gold concentration is lower than 3 g L-1 and the volume percentage of TBP is less than 10%, the plots of the extraction percentage of gold against the molar ratio of [TDMBA(+)] to [Au(CN)(2)(-)] and log D-log[TBP]((o)) plot indicated that the stoichiometry of the extracted species is a 1 : 1 : 4 complex, TDMBA(+) : Au(CN)(2)(-) : TBP. Karl Fischer titration showed that 4 H2O molecules participate in the formation of such a species. Electrical conductivity measurements confirmed its ionic character. Fourier self-deconvolution of the O-H stretching bands revealed 4 different kinds of water molecules contained in the organic phase, some of which were bound to TBP via hydrogen bonding. A supramolecule [TDMBA(+)] . [Au(CN)(2)(-)] . 4H(2)O . 4TBP is proposed for the extracted species. Two TBP molecules are bound to [Au(CN)(2)(-)] by two H2O bridges through hydrogen bonding, forming a [(RO)(3)P=O..H-O-H...N=C-Au-CN..H-O-H...O=P(OR)(3)](-) moiety. Two hydrated TBP molecules, (RO)(3)P=O...H-O-H, surround [TDMBA(+)] by ion dipole interaction. The bulky anion and cation form a lipophilic supramolecule. The possible structure of the supramolecular anion was calculated with an ab initio molecular orbital (MO) method. The DLS study showed that mixing of TDMBAC and Au(CN)(2)(-) in the aqueous phase led to the formation of micelles. When an organic phase containing TBP was added to this aqueous phase, the complexes transferred into the organic phase and reversed micelles or a microemulsion (W/O) were formed when the gold concentration reached a certain limiting value.

Abstract:The solvent extraction of KAu(CN)2 from alkaline cyanide solutions by using quaternary ammonium tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (TDMBAC) as extractant with the addition of tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) has been investigated with the 198Au radioactive tracer method. The influence of several variables such as agitation time, volume percentage of TBP and the molar fraction of TDMBAC in the aqueous phase (xTDMBAC) were investigated. The results indicated that the organic phase has a high extraction capacity. Almost all of the Au(CN)2− (>95%) was transferred from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. Most of the Au(I) in the organic phase can be stripped with 2,2′-thiodiethanol, glycol or ammonium thiocyanate aqueous solutions, from which elemental gold could potentially be recovered by the addition of reducing agents, such as NaBH4 and zinc. The extraction mechanism can be explained based on a microemulsion mechanism while the mechanism of stripping by inorganic salts follows the perchlorate effect.

Abstract:The chemical reduction of Au(III) ions and anisotropic growth of Au nanoparticles were studied in the biocompatible solution system containing glucose-citrate. Based on the characterization of VIS/NIR spectrum and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as the technology of gradient centrifugation separation, a chain gold particle nanostructure of potato-like shape with multiple twin crystals was obtained and its solution had two characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption peaks which appeared at the shorter and longer wavelength direction in the spectrum curve, respectively. The self-assembly property induced by NaOH in the solution containing spherical and elliptic gold nanoparticles was studied. The spectral curve profile of obtaining gold nanochains was similar to that of gold nanorod and the corresponding maximum longitudinal plasmon resonance absorption was located at longer wavelength≈800 nm. The formation of the chain gold nanostructure and self-assembly mechanism of gold nanoparticles are discussed briefly.
[Mechanism of gold solid extraction from aurocyanide solution using D3520 resin impregnated with TRPO]

Abstract:Trialkyphosphine oxides (TRPO) was successfully used for the impregnation of D3520 resin to prepare an extractant-impregnated resin (EIR). Solid extraction of Au(I) from alkaline cyanide solution was studied using this extractant-impregnated resin (EIR), with addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB), directly into the aurous aqueous phase in advance. The mechanism of solid extraction was further investigated by means of FTIR, XPS and SEM. The column separation studies have shown that cationic surfactant CTMAB played a key role in the solid phase extraction, and the resin containing TRPO were effective for the extraction of gold when the molar ratio of CTMAB: Au( I ) reached 1:1. FTIR spectroscopy of gold loaded EIR showed that the frequency of C[triple bond]N stretching vibration was at 2144 cm(-1), and the frequency of P=O stretching vibration shifted to lower frequency from 1153 to 1150 cm(-1). The XPS spectrum of N(1s), Au(4f7/2) and Au(4f5/2) sugges- ted that the coordination environment of gold did not change before and after extraction, and gold was still as the form of Au (CN)2(-) anion exiting in the loaded resin; O(1s) spectrum showed that the chemically combined water significantly increased after solid extraction from 30.74% to 42.34%; Comparing to the P(2p) spectrum before and after extraction, the binding energy increased from 132. 15 to 132. 45 eV, indicating there maybe existing hydrogen-bond interaction between P=O and water molecule, such as P=O...H-O-H. The above results obtained established that in the solid extraction process, the hydrophobic ion association [CTMA+ x Au(CN)] diffused from the bulk solution into the pores of the EIR, and then be solvated by TRPO adsorbed in the pores through hydrogen bonding bridged by the water molecules.

Abstract:The solvent extraction of gold from alkaline cyanide solution by primary amine N1923 and Tri-butylphosphate (TBP) was described by Au-198 radioactive tracer method. The influence of several variables such as acidification percentage, pH of raffinate solution, concentration of N1923, volume percentage of TBP were discussed. While volume percentage of TBP more than 20%, the ratio of acidificated N1923 and Au(CN)(-) bigger than 1, the N1923 system can extract gold from alkaline cyanide solution completely. The combined ratio of N1923, TBP and Au(CN)(2)(-) is 1: 1: 1 based on BC synergistic extraction mechanism. Aggregations are formed in the gold-loaded organic phase when gold concentration reaches 10g . L-1. The radius was measured by the dynamic laser scattering (DLS) method. The backward extraction by 0.1mol . L-1 NaOH system was also discussed.

Abstract:The solvent extraction of trace gold(I) in alkaline cyanide solution by CTAB/TBP system was investigated using a new kind of extraction equipment. Various parameters, such as the effect of addition of CTAB aqueous phase, the quantity of TBP, the concentration of NaCl were studied. The results demonstrate that the addition of CTAB in aqueous phase can enhance the gold (I) extraction rate of TBP sharply. Though it has little effect on the gold (I) extraction percentage, the concentration of NaCl and the quantity of TBP can reduce the degree of emulsification. The extraction of 50 L alkaline cyanide solutions in three extraction columns shows that the extraction percentage is more than 95%, and the gold mass concentration of raffinate is less than 0.5×10~(-6) in the all extraction process. Gold (I) stripping from gold loaded organic phase by KSCN was also studied. About 93% gold (I) in organic phase could be stripped into aqueous phase when the concentration of KSCN reached 3 mol/L.

Abstract:The mechanism of Au (I) extraction has been characterized using Au-198 radiometry, thermodynamic equilibrium, Karl-Fischer titration and FT-IR spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the extraction follows ionic combination and solvent interaction mechanism. The stoichiometry of the extracted species is 1:1:4:4 for TDMBA(+): Au(CN)(2)(-) : TBP : H2O. The microstructure model of the extracted complex is a supramolecular structure via hydrogen bonding, ion dipole interaction and ionic combination. The extraction process can be described as micelles in the aqueous phase transfer into the organic phase and reversed micelles or microemulsion (W/O) form in the organic phase.

Abstract:The recovery of Au(I) from cyanide leaching solutions by solvent extraction techniques has attracted wide interest in the past decades. However, no substantial progress in industries has been reported yet, because of the difficulties concerning gold stripping from loaded organic phases, such as the quaternary amines extraction systems. In this work, a new technique for the recovery of Au(CN)(2)(-) from the loaded cetyltrimethylammonium bromide / tributyl phosphate organic solution by a two-step stripping procedure is suggested first by Au(CN)(2)(-) conversion by HCl into corresponding chloride complex ions, and then by chemical reduction of auro-chloride complex ions in TBP organic phases to give metal gold powder. The influences of HCl concentrations, reaction time, and various reducing agents used on the percent gold conversion and reduction were investigated. About 33% of Au(CN)(2)(-) in the initial TBP organic phase could be precipitated as metal gold powder in the conversion step, while 67% was converted into AuCl2- or AuCl4- and held in the organic phase. Subsequently, the loaded organic phase after conversion was contacted with reducing agents such as sodium sulfite, ammonium oxalate, or hydrazine hydrate. Most (98%) of the auro-chloride complex ions could be effectively reduced as metal gold. As a result, the total gold recovery from the initial TBP organic phases after the two stripping procedures achieved more than 98%. The 198Au radioactive tracer was employed to determine the concentration and distribution behavior of gold in both organic and aqueous solutions. In addition, the experiment on the reuse of the organic phase after gold stripping showed that there was no obvious loss in percent gold(I) recovery after one cycle of the extraction- stripping- regeneration process no matter what reducing agent was used.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel ionic liquid ([ACh][Tf2N]) was synthesized and applied for gold separation from secondary resources, which can be employed as both hydrophobic phase and extractant in the extraction process. By modulating various parameters, the extraction behavior of gold(III) under various conditions was investigated. The result shows that it is more suitable for gold(III) extraction with high salinity and lower acidity, whereas the extraction efficiency can reach 98.98% in 5 min. The anion exchange mechanism between [ACh][Tf2N] and gold(III) was proved by UV–vis, FT-IR, 13C NMR and quantum chemical calculations. The gold(III) in organic phase was easily stripped by 1 mL 0.05 M CS(NH2)2/0.1 M HCl. [ACh][Tf2N] also possesses excellent selectivity for gold(III) in the mixed metal solutions. Furthermore, its operating conditions combination: ionic liquid dosage, the concentration of HCl and NaCl were optimized to 0.55 g, 0.5 M and 2.5 M by response surface methodology (RSM), respectively. Hence, the [ACh][Tf2N] was regarded as a potential extractant for gold recovery from secondary resources.

Abstract:In this study, the chemical reactivity of three organophosphorus acidic extractants (D2EHPA, PC 88A, and Cyanex 272) was compared for the extraction of the anionic gold(III) complex, AuCl 4 − , from the concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions. The extraction behavior was examined by varying the hydrochloric acid concentration from 1 to 9 M. Among the three extractants, only Cyanex 272 showed significant efficiency in extracting Au(III) with the extraction percentage was proportional to hydrochloric acid concentration. In contrast, the extraction of Au(III) by D2EHPA and PC 88A was not significant. FT-IR spectra analysis indicated that the P=O bond in Cyanex 272 weakened after extraction, suggesting its involvement in the process. Based on the structural differences between the extractants and the observed dependence of gold(III) extraction on the hydrochloric acid concentration, a nucleophilic addition reaction was proposed as the extraction mechanism. Specifically, the phosphoryl oxygen of protonated Cyanex 272 likely forms a coordinate bond with the gold ion in AuCl 4 − , facilitating its extraction. This mechanism was supported by both extraction and spectroscopic data, making Cyanex 272 a promising candidate for the selective extraction of Au(III) from highly acidic solutions. The findings offer insights into the extraction of metal ions using organophosphorus extractants in highly acidic environments.

Abstract:Efficient recovery of gold(I) from aurocyanide wastewater offers a dual opportunity for secondary resource utilization and environmental harm reduction. Herein, four environmentally friendly hexaalkylguanidium ionic liquids (HGILs) were synthesized and for the first time used to extract gold(I) from aurocyanide wastewater. Critical parameters, including HGILs and modifier species, dosage, pH, initial gold(I) concentration, and temperature, were optimized. The HGIL systems exhibited excellent gold(I) extraction performance with over 99.0% of gold(I) being extracted under optimal conditions. The composition ratio of the extracted complex was determined by Job's method and slope analysis. Spectral characterization included X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations confirmed that gold(I) extraction followed an anion exchange mechanism. A dicyanoaurate Au(CN) 2 − anion and two n -octanol molecules produced the supermolecule anion [Au(CN) 2 − ·2 n -octanol] via hydrogen bonding, which combined with a guanidium cation to generate the stable extraction complex [HGIL + ·Au(CN) 2 − ·2 n -octanol] through electrostatic attraction. The gold(I) loaded in the ionic liquid phase was effectively stripped with potassium thiocyanate solution. The regenerated HGIL system maintained a high gold(I) extraction efficiency of over 90.0% after five extraction–stripping cycles. In addition, a two-step stripping strategy was developed for the selective separation of gold(I) and other impurity metal ions from real aurocyanide wastewater. This study proposes an efficient green process for recovering gold(I) from mine wastewater, which has potential practical application prospects.

Abstract:The mechanism of solvent extraction of gold(III) in hydrochloric acid media with quaternary ammonium salt octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride dissolved in chloroform was studied. The influences of temperature, NaCl and HCl concentraction on the extraction equilibrium were also investigated. The extraction reaction is exothermic (Δ H ° = -28.53±0.15 kJ/mol) and log K ex = 5.47±0.04.

Abstract:Gold (I) Stripping from loaded organic phase in quaternary ammonium (TDMBAC) system with glycol and diglylenethioether were studied by 198Au tracer method. The influence of several variables such as stripping agent concentrations, the volume ratio of gold loaded organic phase and stripping agents, ethanol concentrations on the gold(I) stripping, and the continuous extraction and stripping were studied under 25°C. It is found that both GLY and DGTE are excellent stripping agents. While the volume percentage of GLY is more than 90% or that of DGTE is more than 70%, the stripping percentage is higher than 90%. Moderate ethanol can enhance the stripping of gold(I) in both systems but organic phase especially TBP can be solubilized into aqueous phase as the concentration of ethanol is too high. The organic phase can be reused if stripping agents do not contain ethanol. It is also found that both NaClO4 and NH4SCN are excellent stripping agents.
