Abstract:Repair and strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) reinforcement is becoming a state-of-the-art technology in a fast way. As a result, several initiatives with respect to the development of design and application guidelines are ongoing world-wide. At the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research different research projects, emphasizing the design aspects, have been performed concerning the structural behaviour of RC members strengthened with externally bonded FRP reinforcement (FRP EBR). Based on this research and the involvement of the authors in international committees, some design aspects according to Eurocode 2 (CEN, 1991) design philosophy are discussed in this paper. It is demonstrated that the serviceability limit state (SLS) is often governing the design and that special attention should be paid to the ultimate limit state (ULS) verification of bond failure. A safety concept for the design is formulated, based on the different possible failure modes which may occur, the ductility at ultimate, the degree of strengthening and some special design considerations.
