Abstract:Controller Area Network (CAN) is a widely used fieldbus protocol in various industrial applications. In order to understand the network behaviors under errors for optimal design of the networked control systems, the messages response time (MRT) of the CAN nodes need to be analyzed. This paper presents a novel analysis method to estimate the MRT delay distribution for CAN networks that operating on polling communication mode. Firstly, the MRT distribution of single slave node is analyzed based on given error distribution, then the preliminary analysis result on the multiple nodes scenario is introduced by decomposing complex traffic event sequence into the single node cases. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the proposed the method, and the results show that the MRT distributions obtained by using proposed method agree well with the actual observations.

Abstract:Controller Area Networks (CANs) are widely adopted in real-time automotive control and are increasingly standard in factory automation. Considering their critical application in safety-critical systems, The error rate of the system must be accurately predicted and guaranteed. Through simulation, it is possible to obtain a low-precision overview of the system's behavior. However, for low-probability events, the required number of samples in simulation increases rapidly, making it difficult to conduct a sufficient number of simulations in practical applications, and the statistical results may deviate from the actual outcomes. Therefore, a formal analysis is needed to evaluate the error rate of the system. This paper improves the worst-case probability response time analysis by using convolution-based busy-window and backlog techniques under the error retransmission protocol of CANs. Empirical analysis shows that the proposed method improves upon existing methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:The Controller Area Networks (CAN) are widely used in industrial Networked Control Systems (NCSs), such as construction machineries, hybrid vehicles, robotics, and other applications. The message response time (MRT) or communication delay is the main issue to degrade the performance of CAN-based NCSs since its exact value is time-varying and unpredictable. The online acquisition of exact MRT can be quite helpful for the delay compensation of NCSs. However, since the clocks on different nodes are asynchronous, the MRT acquisition in CAN is a challenging work. The current delay acquisition methods for asynchronous systems are not suitable for the delay compensation in CAN-based NCSs because they either increase the bus load of CAN or cannot acquire the exact MRT in real time. In this paper, we propose a novel online real-time MRT estimation method for periodic CAN messages based on the analysis of message traces on CAN bus. The proposed method can estimate the exact MRT of the received message instance in real time without increasing the bus load and can be conveniently embedded into the CAN nodes without requiring additional equipment. In order to validate the proposed method, practical experiments are carried out and the experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the exact MRT of periodic CAN messages.

Abstract:Controller area network (CAN) is a widely used fieldbus protocol in various industrial applications. To understand the network behavior under errors for the optimal design of networked control systems, the message response time of the CAN network needs to be analyzed. In this study, a novel delay time distribution analysis method for the response messages is proposed when considering errors. In this method the complex message queues are decomposed into typical message patterns and cases. First, a stochastic fault model is developed, and the probability factor is defined to calculate the error distribution. Then the message delay time distribution for the single slave node configuration is analyzed based on the error distribution. Next, based on the delay time distribution analysis of typical patterns and cases, an analysis framework of message delay time distribution for the master/slave configuration is developed. The testbed is constructed and case studies are conducted to demonstrate the proposed methodology under different network configurations. Experimental results show that the delay time distributions calculated by the proposed method agree well with the actual observations

Abstract:In order to optimize the design of application layer in communication systems using the CAN and TTCAN protocols,the response time of a given message requires evaluation.A mathematical model was presented to evaluate the response time,and then was validated experimentally.The model was then used to evaluate the influences of many factors on the real-time communication performance and characteristics of various messages.The results show that for a large bus load,priority of messages has a strong impact on real time performance of messages.In this instance,CAN messages with low priority have longer response time,response time of TTCAN period messages is invariable,and response time of event messages is distinctly increased.

Abstract:The Controller Area Network (CAN) is widely employed in automotive control system networks. In the last few years, the amount of data has been increasing rapidly in these networks. With the purpose of improving CAN bandwidth efficiency, scheduling and analysis are considered to be particularly important. As an effective method, it has been known that assigning offsets to the CAN messages can reduce their worst case response time (WCRT). Meanwhile, the fact is that many commercial CAN controllers have been equipped with a priority or first-in-first-out (FIFO) queue to transmit messages to the CAN bus. However, previous researches for WCRT analysis of CAN messages either assumed a priority queue or did not consider the offset. For this reason, in this paper we propose a WCRT analysis method for CAN messages with assigned offset in the FIFO queue. We first present a critical instant theorem, then we propose two algorithms for WCRT calculation based on the given theorem. Experimental results on generated message sets and a real message set have validated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In modern automobiles, Controller Area Network (CAN) has been widely used in different sub systems that are connected by using gateway. While a gateway is necessary to integrate different electronic sub systems, it brings challenges for the analysis of Worst Case Response Time (WCRT) for CAN messages, which is critical from the safety point of view. In this paper, we first analyzed the challenges for WCRT analysis of messages in gateway-interconnected CANs. Then, based on the existing WCRT analysis method proposed for one single CAN, a new WCRT analysis method that uses two new definitions to analyze the interfering delay of sporadically arriving gateway messages is proposed for non-gateway messages. Furthermore, a division approach, where the end-to-end WCRT analysis of gateway messages is transformed into the similar situation with that of non-gateway messages, is adopted for gateway messages. Finally, the proposed method is extended to include CANs with different bandwidths. The proposed method is proved to be safe, and experimental results demonstrated its effectiveness by comparing it with a full space searching based simulator and applying it to a real message set.

Abstract:In manufacturing systems, Controller Area Network (CAN) based systems has been widely used. Hence the reliability of the Controller Area Network has become increasingly important. In order to ensure production safety and reduce unnecessary maintenance costs, evaluating the reliability of a CAN network becomes necessary. The reliability of the CAN network can be assessed by determining the status of nodes and predicting the times of each node reaching its bus off states using node transmit error counter (TEC) values. However, the TEC values of the nodes cannot be accessible online in most industrial applications. This paper presents a novel method for node TEC value estimation based on the segmented discrete time Markov chains using network error information. We also consider the special scenario where data frame arbitration area is damaged by the error so that node identifier (ID) information of the interrupted data frame cannot be identified. Case studies are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method. Experiment results show that the estimation results using the proposed method agree well with actual observations.

Abstract:CAN (Control Area Network) bus has been widely used as a standard for factory automation. This paper mainly investigates the mixed scheduling problem. By combining the response time analysis of static scheduling and dynamic scheduling, the theoretic maximum response time of mixed scheduling is obtained. The results of the experiments under different bus rates show that the actual maximum response time of message is smaller than the theoretic maximum response time of the message. And using mixed scheduling can lower the response time of the message in the subset with high priority while the performance of the system as well as the other scheduling.

Abstract:Based on the study of the existed controller area network (CAN) communication models, a new error model based on Poisson process and geometric distribution is set up in this paper. The relations between model parameters and transmission bit error rate are presented. The real-time performance of the CAN protocol for hybrid electric vehicles is analyzed using the established model, and the relations between the parameter λ, baud rate, transmitting period and DLC and the bit error rate are presented. Finally, some design principles of CAN application layer protocol, such as using the CAN controller with multi transmit buffer scheme, lengthening the transmitting period and reducing the DLC by all means, are proposed.

Abstract:When multiple model predictive controllers are implemented on a shared controller area network (CAN), their performance may degrade due to the variable timing and delays among messages. The priority based real-time scheduling of messages on the CAN introduces complex timing of events, especially when the types and number of messages change at runtime. This paper introduces a novel hybrid timing model to make runtime predictions on the timing of the messages for a finite time window. Controllers can be designed using the optimization algorithms for model predictive control by considering the timing as optimization constraints. This timing model allows multiple controllers to share a CAN without significant degradation in the controller performance. The timing model also provides a convenient way to check the schedulability of messages on the CAN at runtime. Simulation results demonstrate that the timing model is accurate and computationally efficient to meet the needs of real-time implementation. Simulation results also demonstrate that model predictive controllers designed when considering the timing constraints have superior performance than the controllers designed without considering the timing constraints.

Abstract:Controller Area Network(CAN) is a serial communication protocol developed for data exchange between controllers. To meet real-time standards of control systems, designing a CAN platform requires due consideration of latency of messages. Therefore, it is necessary to build an analysis model and a simulation platform of CAN message latency. In this paper, a CAN message queueing model and a simulation platform are built according to the cyclic,fixed priority tasks nonpreemptively schedule analysis model used in operation system design and the similarity between this model and the CAN message transferring process. Simulation and analysis on THECU CAN platform with four processing nodes are given. The correctness of the model is verified and the influence of message generation cycles and phases on latency of messages are discussed, too.

Abstract:A central gateway is a very important node for connecting the buses to pass messages from one bus to the other bus(es) in current in-vehicle networks. However, transmitting message through gateway causes additional delay to the end-toend delay of messages. Existing methods for analysis of gateway processing delay usually employed experimental measurements which are inefficient and cannot obtain a safe delay bound.Meanwhile, the increased complexity of in-vehicle networks require theoretical analysis of gateway processing delay to obtain a safe upper bound delay. In this paper, we first construct a central gateway model with CAN clusters, then we propose a novel response time analysis method with rigorous proof to compute the upper bound delay of gateway tasks. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach can obtain the upper bound delay in reasonable time even for a large-scale network workload, and the calculated upper bound is close to the exact worst case delay.

Abstract:We study the worst case response time (WCRT) analysis and evaluation for sporadic message-processing tasks in a multicore automotive gateway of a controller area network (CAN) cluster. We first build a multicore automotive gateway on CAN clusters. Two WCRT analysis methods for message-processing tasks in the multicore gateway are subsequently presented based on global and partitioned scheduling paradigms. We evaluate the WCRT results of two analysis methods with real message sets provided by the automaker, and present the design optimization guide.

Abstract:The application of controlled area network(CAN) communications is analyzed based on the study on vehicle bus technology.The message transmission delay in bus arbitration and the message errors due to inconsistency are studied in detail,and the shortcoming of event triggered CAN in real time system is analyzed quantitatively through testing.Time triggered protocol(TTP) is then introduced to overcome the shortcomings of traditional CAN.The structure and key technologies of timing mechanism and fault tolerant of time triggered CAN(TTCAN) are discussed at length,and several similar vehicle buses are analyzed.Finally the application prospect of TTCAN to distributed vehicle network is forecasted.

Abstract:In modern automobiles, gateways are commonly used to connect several subsystems of controller area networks (CANs) to achieve integrated architecture and distributed cross-bus functionalities. To analyze the real-time property of such in-vehicle networks, worst-case response time (WCRT) analysis for gateway-integrated CAN messages has been studied recently. However, the WCRTs obtained are quite pessimistic. In this study, we examine in detail the various actual arriving orders of gateway messages and then propose an explorative WCRT computation method. It is proved that the obtained WCRT results are safe WCRT bounds. Experimental results for real message set demonstrate as much as 24% reduction of WCRT compared with those obtained using the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:The reliability of the Controller Area Network（CAN） is critical to the performance and safety of the system. However, direct bus-off time assessment tools are lacking in practice due to inaccessibility of the node information and the complexity of the node interactions upon errors. In order to measure the mean time to bus-off（MTTB） of all the nodes, a novel data driven node bus-off time assessment method for CAN network is proposed by directly using network error information. First, the corresponding network error event sequence for each node is constructed using multiple-layer network error information. Then, the generalized zero inflated Poisson process（GZIP） model is established for each node based on the error event sequence. Finally, the stochastic model is constructed to predict the MTTB of the node. The accelerated case studies with different error injection rates are conducted on a laboratory network to demonstrate the proposed method, where the network errors are generated by a computer controlled error injection system. Experiment results show that the MTTB of nodes predicted by the proposed method agree well with observations in the case studies. The proposed data driven node time to bus-off assessment method for CAN networks can successfully predict the MTTB of nodes by directly using network error event data.
