Abstract:Based on the chiral quantization, we develop a nonperturbative method for nonlocal conserved currents for Toda-type integrable systems. The sine-Gordon model and the ZMS model are dealt with uniformly in this scheme, just as these two models are treated in the perturbed CFT framework. Although there only exist two nonlocal conserved charges, this scheme can provide all the useful data of physics concerned, e.g., the braiding relations, the spectra-dependent S-matrices of the solitons, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we carefully analyze the applicability of the nonlocal current method to sine-Gordon and Zhiber-Mikhailov-Shabat (ZMS) systems within Chang and Rajaraman's nonperturbative framework. As an illustration, the ZMS system is dealt with in detail by using their method. In this nonperturbative framework, only two nonlocal charges exist there for a determined coupling constant β, which together with the topological charge obey merely the algebra relation of quantum group slq(2). If such a finite-dimensional quantum group were regarded as the whole symmetry hidden in the system, the true S-matrix of the ZMS solitons would not be obtained.

Abstract:We derive an explicit, exactly conformally invariant form for the action for the non-abelian Toda field theory. We demonstrate that the conformal invariance conditions, expressed in terms of the $\beta$-functions of the theory, are satisfied to all orders, and we use our results to obtain a value for the central charge agreeing with previous calculations.

Abstract:Using the recently developed notion of a fractional Virasoro algebra, we explore the implied operator product expansions in nonlocal conformal field theories and their geometric meaning. We probe the interplay between classical nonlocality in the functional-analytic sense and quantization in a two-dimensional setting and find that nonlocal quantum dynamics realize this fractional Virasoro algebra exclusively with a state dependent central charge. Notably, we prove that the widely studied free Gaussian fixed points with a fractional Laplacian kinetic term does not fit this criterion but that the RG flow associated non-Gaussian fixed points do.

Abstract:We consider the Hamiltonian reduction of the two-loop Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model (WZNW) based on an untwisted affine Kac-Moody algebra $\cgh$. The resulting reduced models, called {\em Generalized Non-Abelian Conformal Affine Toda (G-CAT)}, are conformally invariant and a wide class of them possesses soliton solutions; these models constitute non-abelian generalizations of the Conformal Affine Toda models. Their general solution is constructed by the Leznov-Saveliev method. Moreover, the dressing transformations leading to the solutions in the orbit of the vacuum are considered in detail, as well as the $\tau$-functions, which are defined for any integrable highest weight representation of $\cgh$, irrespectively of its particular realization. When the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken, the G-CAT model becomes a generalized Affine Toda model, whose soliton solutions are constructed. Their masses are obtained exploring the spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry, and their relation to the fundamental particle masses is discussed.

Abstract:We initiate the study of correlation functions of non-Abelian spin-1 conserved current in three dimensional conformal field theories using numerical conformal bootstrap. We discuss the general framework and apply it to the particular cases of $SU(N)$ and $O(N)$ global symmetry. In both cases we obtain general bounds on operator dimensions. In the large-$N$ limit our bounds show features in correspondence of the expected position of fermionic QED$_3$ in three dimensions, as well as other interesting theories. By imposing gaps inspired by the spectrum of QED$_3$ at large-$N$, we manage to restrict the plane of certain operator dimensions to a small island, where QED$_3$ must live.

Abstract:In the free □k scalar conformal field theory, there exist conserved and partially conserved higher-spin currents. We study their anomalous dimensions associated with φ2n interaction in the ε expansion. We derive general formulas for the leading corrections from the conformal multiplet recombination, and verify their consistency with crossing symmetry using the Lorentzian inversion formula. Local/Short-range conformal field theories from long-range perturbation theory

Abstract:We show that by imposing the conformal Wald identity, one can extract conformal data of the corresponding short-range/local CFT from the long-range perturbation theory. We first apply this to the O(N) vector model. We demonstrate that by properly re-sum the perturbative series, one gets reasonable estimations of the critical exponents of the local/short-range CFTs. We then apply this method to study fermionic models with four-fermion interactions. In 2+1 dimensions, the model has the Gross-Neveu coupling and the Thirring coupling. We also consider a 4+1 dimensional theory with a generalized Thirring coupling.

Abstract:We investigate the superconformal transformation properties of the supercurrent as well as of the superconformal anomalies themselves in d=4, N=1 supersymmetric quantum field theory. Matter supercurrent and anomalies are coupled to a classical background of minimal supergravity fields. On flat superspace, there exist two different types of the superconformal Ward identity (called S and B) which correspond to the flat space limits of old resp. new minimal background supergravity fields. In the present publication we give particular importance to the new minimal case. A general formalism is set up which is then applied to the massless Wess-Zumino model.

Conformal Conserved Currents in Embedding Space

Abstract:We study conformal conserved currents in arbitrary irreducible representations of the Lorentz group using the embedding space formalism. With the help of the operator product expansion, we first show that conservation conditions can be fully investigated by considering only two- and three-point correlation functions. We then find an explicitly conformally-covariant differential operator in embedding space that implements conservation based on the standard position space operator product expansion differential operator $\partial_\mu$, although the latter does not uplift to embedding space covariantly. The differential operator in embedding space that imposes conservation is the same differential operator $\mathcal{D}_{ijA}$ used in the operator product expansion in embedding space. We provide several examples including conserved currents in irreducible representations that are not symmetric and traceless. With an eye on four-point conformal bootstrap equations for four conserved vector currents $\langle JJJJ\rangle$ and four energy-momentum tensors $\langle TTTT\rangle$, we mostly focus on conservation conditions for $\langle JJ\mathcal{O}\rangle$ and $\langle TT\mathcal{O}\rangle$. Finally, we reproduce and extend the consequences of conformal Ward identities at coincident points by determining three-point coefficients in terms of charges.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the microscopic techniques of non-rational bulk and boundary conformal field theory which are needed to describe strings moving in non-compact curved backgrounds. The latter arise, e.g. in the context of AdS/CFT-like dualities and for studies of time-dependent processes. After a general outline of the central concepts, we focus on two specific but rather prototypical models: Liouville field theory and the 2D cigar. Rather than following the historical path, the presentation attempts to be systematic and self-contained.

Abstract:We give a non-perturbative completion of a class of closed topological string theories in terms of building blocks of dual open strings. In the specific case where the open string is given by a matrix model these blocks correspond to a choice of integration contour. We then apply this definition to the AGT setup where the dual matrix model has logarithmic potential and is conjecturally equivalent to Liouville conformal field theory. By studying the natural contours of these matrix integrals and their monodromy properties, we propose a precise map between topological string blocks and Liouville conformal blocks. Remarkably, this description makes use of the light-cone diagrams of closed string field theory, where the critical points of the matrix potential correspond to string interaction points.

Non-perturbative Studies of Non-conformal Field Theories

Abstract:Many of the exciting features of the Standard Model of the elementary particles are inherently non-perturbative. A theoretical understanding of many physics aspects beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles also requires a non-perturbative framework. One such framework involves discretizing quantum field theories on a spacetime lattice. We can use this lattice regularization method to study supersymmetric versions of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this thesis, we discuss the spacetime lattice setup, and with the examples of different models, we will see the numerical capability of this tool in exploring field theory regimes that are not accessible through perturbation theory. We use an efficient version of the Monte Carlo algorithm to update the field configurations in the path integral and eventually reach the equilibrium configurations. A version of the gauge/gravity conjecture connects weakly coupled gravitational theories to strongly coupled field theories. We will mainly focus on the non-conformal analogs of the conjecture in lower dimensions. This thesis mainly discusses the numerical simulation results of two lower-dimensional models. One is the bosonic version of the BMN matrix quantum mechanics and the other is a two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory containing four supersymmetries. Our numerical results suggest that the phase diagram of bosonic BMN model smoothly interpolates between the bosonic BFSS and the gauged Gaussian model, with first-order deconfinement phase transition at all couplings. Our simulation results for two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that contains four supersymmetries show that this model admits a deconfinement phase transition in the limit of a large number of colors. We also show that the nature of the transition looks similar to its maximally supersymmetric cousin in the weak coupling regime.

Operator-state correspondence in simple current extended conformal field theories: Toward a general understanding of chiral conformal field theories and topological orders

Abstract:In this work, we revisit the operator-state correspondence in the Majorana conformal field theory (CFT) with emphasis on its semion representation. Whereas the semion representation gives a concise ``abelian" (or invertible) representation in the level of fusion rule and quantum states, there exists subtlety when considering the chiral multipoint correlation function. In this sense, the operator-state correspondence in the semion sector of the fermionic theory inevitably contains difficulty coming from its anomalous conformal dimension $1/16$ as a $Z_{2}$ symmetry operator. By analyzing the asymptotic behaviors of the existing correlation functions, we propose a nontrivial correspondence between the chiral conformal blocks and bulk correlation functions containing both order and disorder fields. One can generalize this understanding to $Z_{N}$ models (in which there exist long-standing open problems). We expect this may improve our understanding of the simple current extension of CFT which can appear commonly in the studies of topologically ordered systems.

Abstract:Using methods from the conformal bootstrap, we study the properties of Noether currents in the critical $O(n)$ loop model. We confirm that they do not give rise to a Kac-Moody algebra (for $n\neq 2$), a result expected from the underlying lack of unitarity. By studying four-point functions in detail, we fully determine the current-current OPEs, and thus obtain several structure constants with physical meaning. We find in particular that the terms $:\!J\bar{J}\!:$ in the identity and adjoint channels vanish exactly, invalidating the argument made in \cite{car93-1} that adding orientation-dependent interactions to the model should lead to continuously varying exponents in self-avoiding walks. We also determine the residue of the identity channel in the $JJ$ two-point function, finding that it coincides both with the result of a transfer-matrix computation for an orientation-dependent correlation function in the lattice model, and with an earlier Coulomb gas computation of Cardy \cite{car93}. This is, to our knowledge, one of the first instances where the Coulomb gas formalism and the bootstrap can be successfully compared.

Abstract:In our previous publications we have developed some elements of Noncommutative calculus on the enveloping algebras of $A_m$ type, in particular, analogs of the partial derivatives and de Rham complex were defined. Also, we introduced the notion of quantization with Noncommutative configuration space and quantized a few dynamical models in this sense. In the current paper we propose a method of quantizing the Yang-Mills models in same sense.

A Confining String Theory Derivable from Yang-Mills Theory due to a Novel Vacuum Condensate

Abstract:We discuss within the weak-field approximation and the derivative expansion how the area law of the Wilson loop follows directly from the vacuum condensate of mass dimension 2, i.e., simultaneous Bose-Einstein condensation of gluon pair and ghost-antighost pair. Such a novel vacuum condensate was recently claimed to exist as the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of a BRST-invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2. First of all, we use a version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem to rewrite the Wilson loop line integral to a surface integral. Then we convert the Yang-Mills theory with an insertion of the Wilson loop operator into a bosonic string theory with a rigidity term by way of an equivalent antisymmetric tensor gauge theory which couples to the surface spanned by the Wilson loop. This result suggests an intimate relationship between quark confinement and mass gap in Yang-Mills theory. In fact, the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the dual superconductivity is also derivable by making use of duality transformations without using the naive Abelian projection and without breaking the global color invariance of the original Yang-Mills theory. This feature is desirable from the viewpoint of color confinement preserving color symmetry.

On the Hilbert Space of the Chern-Simons Matrix Model, Deformed Double Current Algebra Action, and the Conformal Limit

Abstract:A Chern-Simons matrix model was proposed by Dorey, Tong, and Turner to describe non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall effect. In this paper we study the Hilbert space of the Chern-Simons matrix model from a geometric quantization point of view. We show that the Hilbert space of the Chern-Simons matrix model can be identified with the space of sections of a line bundle on the quiver variety associated to a framed Jordan quiver. We compute the character of the Hilbert space using localization technique. Using a natural isomorphism between vortex moduli space and a Beilinson-Drinfeld Schubert variety, we prove that the ground states wave functions are flat sections of a bundle of conformal blocks associated to a WZW model. In particular they solve a Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. We show that there exists a natural action of the deformed double current algebra (DDCA) on the Hilbert space, moreover the action is irreducible. We define and study the conformal limit of the Chern-Simons matrix model. We show that the conformal limit of the Hilbert space is an irreducible integrable module of $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n)$ with level identified with the matrix model level. Moreover, we prove that $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n)$ generators can be obtained from scaling limits of matrix model operators, which settles a conjecture of Dorey-Tong-Turner. The key to the proof is the construction of a Yangian $Y(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ action on the conformal limit of the Hilbert space, which we expect to be equivalent to the $Y(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ action on the integrable $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(n)$ modules constructed by Uglov. We also characterize eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix model Hilbert space with respect to a maximal commutative subalgebra of Yangian.
