Abstract:In the past thirty years, tremendous changes in mobility have taken place in almost every city in China. However, in the rapid motorization process, cities present diverse development: from Shanghai, a megacity with low vehicle ownership, to Wenzhou, a medium city with high car use, and Qiqihar, a non-motorized traffic dependent region even in 2012. This paper monitors the development and draws the historic path of Chinese cities, through a cluster analysis of 38 sample cities in different years. Both megacities and small cities are included in this research. The results suggest that these cities can be categorized to four clusters, which are named non-motorized cities, auto-oriented cities, transit cities and hybrid cities. By comparing the diversity of mobility patterns across the cluster, this paper explains the overall transportation development trend, and presents the key impact factors in motorization process, which can assist the governors to build a more sustainable city from the mobility culture perspective.
