Abstract:We use fast synchrotron X-ray microtomography to understand three-phase flow in mixed-wet porous media to design either enhanced permeability or capillary trapping. The dynamics of these phenomena are of key importance in subsurface hydrology, carbon dioxide storage, oil recovery, food and drug manufacturing, and chemical reactors. We study the dynamics of a water-gas-water injection sequence in a mixed-wet carbonate rock. During the initial waterflooding, water displaced oil from pores of all size, indicating a mixed-wet system with local contact angles both above and below90 degrees. When gas was injected, gas displaced oil preferentially with negligible displacement of water. This behavior is explained in terms of the gas pressure needed for invasion. Overall, gas behaved as the most nonwetting phase with oil as the most wetting phase; however, pores of all size were occupied by oil, water, and gas, as a signature of mixed-wet media. Thick oil wetting layers were observed, which increased oil connectivity and facilitated its flow during gas injection. A chase waterflooding resulted in additional oil flow, while gas was trapped by oil and water. Furthermore, we quantified the evolution of the surface areas and both Gaussian and the total curvature, from which capillary pressure could be estimated. These quantities are related to the Minkowski functionals which quantify the degree of connectivity and trapping. The combination of water and gas injection, under mixed-wet immiscible conditions, leads to both favorable oil flow and significant trapping of gas, which is advantageous for storage applications.

Abstract:Unconventional shale gas provides a potential resource for future energy consumption. However, there are many environmental issues including leakage of shale gas into soil and groundwater. This research is an attempt to understand the micro mechanics of shale gas movement through soils. A 3D pore network can capture both the geometrical information of soil matrix including pore size and throat size distributions with their correlation and the topological information of soil matrix including the distribution of coordination numbers. The geometrical and topological information of soil structure including pore size distribution, throat size distribution, pore center distance, pore size and throat size ratio, coordination number distribution, and spatial correlation of the above parameters can also obtain by analyzing computer generated random packings of equal size spheres. A micromechanical investigation to understand the physics of shale gas migration and subsequent spatial distribution of shale gas at pore scale was also performed by a rule-based dynamic two-phase flow model. This paper summarizes observations from the simulation of shale gas migration and subsequent spatial distribution and discusses its application in shale gas exploration.

Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow

Abstract:This paper mainly reviews the research progress on multiphase flow in nuclear engineering. This paper is composed of three parts. The first part documents a literature statistical analysis based on publications, mainly the SCIE-indexed papers collected in the Web of Science. The analysis data of publications on multiphase flows showcase the prosperous future of the current Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow journal. The second part summarizes advanced measurement technology and microscale and nanoscale multiphase flow research in terms of modeling and algorithms. The third part reviews the current progress in multiphase flow-related research in nuclear engineering. Various aspects of solid-liquid, gas-liquid, and gas-particle flows, in particular, critical heat flux research and deep learning applications in nuclear engineering, have been extensively reviewed. This paper aims to explore multiphase flow research in the future in the nuclear and its related disciplines through the analysis and review of cutting-edge research and development states.

Abstract:Complex multiphase flow problems in ocean engineering have long been challenging topics. Problems such as large deformations at interfaces, multi-media interfaces, and multiple physical processes are difficult to simulate. Mesh-based algorithms could have limitations in dealing with multiphase interface capture and large interface deformations. On the contrary, the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, as a Lagrangian meshless particle method, has some merit and flexibility in capturing multiphase interfaces and dealing with large boundary deformations. In recent years, with the improvement of SPH theory and numerical models, the SPH method has made significant advances and breakthroughs in terms of theoretical completeness and computational stability, which starts to be widely used in ocean engineering problems, including multiphase flows under atmospheric pressure, high-pressure multiphase flows, phase-change multiphase flows, granular multiphase flows and so on. In this paper, we review the progress of SPH theory and models in multiphase flow simulations, discussing the problems and challenges faced by the method, prospecting to future research works, and aiming to provide a reference for subsequent research.

Numerical simulation of multiphase flow in fractured vuggy porous medium using finite volume method

Abstract:The naturally carbonate reservoir body discussed in this paper is classified as the fractured vuggy porous medium, characterized by the presence of fractures, vugs, and rock matrices with low permeability and low porosity. The natural fractures provide major conduits for global flow. The vugs can range size from centimeters to meters, are highly permeable with large porosity and provide the main storage space. Due to the complex porous systems and highly heterogeneous, it is required a numerical model in conjunction with unstructured mesh to discretize the governing equations in space domain. The finite volume method is used for modeling multiphase fluid flow in the fractured vuggy porous medium. The formulations of cell-centered finite volume methods are presented. The mass flux term between the elements within fracture continuum and vug continuum, is described by high speed non-Darcy flow, Forchheimer equation. The discretized nonlinear equations are handled fully implicitly and solved with Newton-Raphson iteration. Several two dimensional numerical examples of oil displacement by water are simulated to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper deals with simulation of flow and transport in porous media such as transport of groundwater contaminants. We first discuss how macro scale equations are derived and which terms have to be closed by models. The transport of tracers is strongly influenced by pore scale velocity structure and large scale inhomogeneities in the permeability field. The velocity structure on the pore scale is investigated by direct numerical simulations of the 3D velocity field in a random sphere pack. The velocity probability density functions are strongly skewed, including some negative velocities. The large probability for very small velocities might be the reason for non-Fickian dispersion in the initial phase of contaminant transport. We present a method to determine large scale distributions of the permeability field from point-wise velocity measurements. The adjoint-based optimisation algorithm delivers fully satisfying agreement between input and estimated permeability fields. Finally numerical methods for convection dominated tracer transports are investigated from a theoretical point of view. It is shown that high order Finite Element Methods can reduce or even eliminate non-physical oscillations in the solution without introducing additional numerical diffusivity.

Abstract:It is essential to research coupled heat transfer and seepage in fractured surrounding rocks in deep underground spaces to design proper ventilation and air conditioning systems for deep underground spaces. The heat transfer theory and discrete network seepage models were used to establish a 3-D unsteady coupling model for large sparsely fractured surrounding rocks in deep underground spaces. Using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, the temperature fields of the surrounding rock matrix and fracture water were obtained. Furthermore, the influences of the seepage velocity and the fracture aperture on the fracture water temperature field were discussed. The results of the numerical simulations showed that the characteristics of the fractures have an important impact on the temperature field of a large sparsely fractured surrounding rock. The numerical simulation results were basically in accordance with the experimental results.

Abstract:Summary Multiphase flow behavior in the complex porous media of lacustrine shale oil is critical to the oil production performance. Shale oil reservoir processes spatial spaces of multiscale porous media. In view of the mesoscopic scale, the fluids flow behaviors of shale oil reservoirs are significantly different from that of tight oil reservoirs and the multimedia flow fluxes in shale have to be reevaluated. Furthermore, upscaling methods from the mesoscopic scale to the macroscopic level as well as coupling methods of multimedia mass transfer have not been adequately established. Based on the multiple media model, such as organic-inorganic matter system and embedded discrete fracture model (DFM), this work proposes a multiscale porous media flow simulation method that is applicable for lacustrine shale oil reservoirs. In the model, various reservoir matrix and flow spaces, such as organic pores, intragranular pores, intergranular pores, and fracture networks composed of bedding fractures and hydraulic fractures, are included. Methods of mass flux conductivity estimations among multiscale media and the relevant upgrading methods are also proposed. Validation of the model is first conducted by the comparison of the oil production performance estimated by the proposed model and a theory solution, and the model is further compared to Gulong shale oil reservoir data to determine its availability in field application. The results show that the proposed simulation model is capable of accurately characterizing the multiphase flow characteristics in multiscale media in shale. It is further demonstrated that the proposed model significantly improves the simulation accuracy over the current nonupscaling models. Field study shows that, based on the accurate characterization of the complex flows in shale oil reservoirs, the research output can provide support for future development of the Gulong shale oil reservoir.

Abstract:There are many factors governing the migration of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs )in the subsurface because of the simultaneous flow of immiscible phases in a multiphase system including DNAPLs,water and air after the leakage of DNAPLs.These factors that affect the complex DNAPLs'behavior are summarized from the aspects of physicochemical properties,leakage rate,retention characteristics and heterogeneity as well as groundwater flow velocity.Previous works have mainly focused on only one influencing factor,the combined factors, especially both groundwater flow velocity and heterogeneity on the migration of DNAPLs are further discussed. According to the deficiency of existing work,some issues needed to be further approached are presented.

Multiphase flows are encountered extensively in various energy applications, including transportation, conversion, and utilization of fossil, renewable, hydrogen, and nuclear energies. These flows encompass a wide range of phenomena, such as fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, combustion, and chemical reactions. However, multiphase flows are highly intricate due to the coexistence of multiple phases, states, and components, as well as the interactions among them that occur across diverse spatiotemporal scales. Consequently, both academia and industry face significant challenges in comprehending and harnessing multiphase flows. Thus, establishing connections between basic research and industrial applications in the field of multiphase flows is fundamental and indispensable for advancements in energy science and technologies.

Abstract:Based on the theory of multiphase flow in porous media, analytical model for NAPL transport in soils is proposed and developed in this paper. Firstly, centrifuge testing and numerical simulation are employed to model the multiphase flow through unsaturated soils, and hence the tempo-spatial distribution and contamination extent are obtained. Then the migration behavior of NAPL in unsaturated soils is analyzed. It is shown that 1) After ground spill, LNAPL enters into unsaturated soils and moves downwards by gravity force, with some retained in pore-S of soil mass; 2) When reaching underground water table, LNAPL floats on it and continues to migrate; 3) Hydro-geological condition has significant effect on multiphase flow.

Abstract:The phase-field model (PFM) is gaining increasing attention in the application of multiphase flows due to its advantages, in which the phase interface is treated as a narrow layer and phase parameters change smoothly and continually at this thin layer. Thus, the construction or tracking of the phase interface can be avoided, and the bulk phase and phase interface can be simulated integrally. PFM provides a useful alternative that does not suffer from problems with either the mass conservation or the accurate computation of surface tension. In this paper, the state of the art of PFM in the numerical modeling and simulation of multiphase flows is comprehensively reviewed. Starting with a brief description of historical developments in the PFM, we continue to take a tour into the basic concepts, fundamental theory, and mathematical models. Then, the commonly used numerical schemes and algorithms for solving the governing systems of PFM in the application of multiphase flows are presented. The various applications and representative results, especially in non-match density scenarios of multiphase flows, are reviewed. The primary challenges and research focus of PFM are analyzed and summarized as well. This review is expected to provide a valuable reference for PFM in the application of multiphase flows.

Multiphase Flow Modelling in Multiscale Porous Media: An Open-Sourced Micro-Continuum Approach

Abstract:An open-sourced multiphase Darcy-Brinkman approach is proposed to simulate two-phase flow in hybrid systems containing both solid-free regions and porous matrices. This micro-continuum model is rooted in elementary physics and volume averaging principles, where a unique set of partial differential equations is used to represent flow in both regions and scales. The crux of the proposed model is that it tends asymptotically towards the Navier-Stokes volume-of-fluid approach in solid-free regions and towards the multiphase Darcy equations in porous regions. Unlike existing multiscale multiphase solvers, it can match analytical predictions of capillary, relative permeability, and gravitational effects at both the pore and Darcy scales. Through its open-source implementation, hybridPorousInterFoam, the proposed approach marks the extension of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation packages into porous multiscale, multiphase systems. The versatility of the solver is illustrated using applications to two-phase flow in a fractured porous matrix and wave interaction with a porous coastal barrier.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:The study of the flow behavior in pores, fractures, and pore-fracture dual media plays a crucial role in understanding the mechanisms of sudden water inrush and sand flow. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using a custom-made transparent porous model to investigate the flow characteristics of fluids in complex media. Additionally, finite element simulations were employed to explore the flow features at multiple scales. A detailed analysis at the micrometer scale was conducted to examine the variations in the water velocity, volumetric flow rate, Reynolds number, flow field, and permeability under different porosity and pressure drop conditions. The results indicate that within the studied range of flow velocities and pressures, the fluid flow in all the media models adhered to Darcy's law. The improvement in structural connectivity in the random pore model has made the flow channels of fluids in the random pore network more diverse, resulting in an increase in the peak water flow velocity from 4.89E–5 m/s to 4.19E–4 m/s. The fluid accelerated while bypassing the protruding solid particles, resulting in the formation of high-velocity zones in the vicinity. As the pressure drop increases, the volume flow rate of the random dual-medium model with a porosity of 0.6 can increase to 1.01E–9 m 3 /s, with the highest growth rate. We also simulate the fluid flow of a regular dual-medium model at different porosities and find that the permeability rapidly increases from 5.65E–13 m 2 to 1.01E–11 m 2 , demonstrating that the presence of fractures can significantly improve the permeability performance of the medium. The research findings deepen our understanding of the migration behavior of water in complex geological environments and provide theoretical guidance for groundwater resource protection and underground engineering.

Abstract:With the growing development and utilization of underground space and resources, rock masses exposed to high stresses and pore pressure, large temperature changes, and complex hydraulic–chemical environments have become a research topic of wide interest. Such coupled physical and chemical processes strongly impact the rock mass's mechanical properties and structural failure. Analyzing and studying rock's mechanical properties and damage under multi-physics coupled environment can help ensure the safety and efficiency of exploiting underground mineral resources and developing underground space. Thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) coupled processes in rock masses have become a hot research topic, and the related numerical and experimental methods have made significant progress. This paper comprehensively reviews and evaluates the latest research progress on THMC coupling models and numerical methods. Finally, we summarize the key points, difficulties, and future THMC multi-physics coupling research directions and provide references for influencing mechanisms research and engineering practice.
