Abstract:With lots of online problems found in economic management, more and more scholars take an interesting attention on analysis method of competitive algorithm to solve online problems in recent years. For on-line leasing problem, because of its simple demand structure and the good statistical properties, we use competitive analysis method to built online leasing model with linear exponential hazard function under taking it into account tax rate that takes an important play in affecting online leasing decision-making. Finally, optimal competitive strategies and their competitive ratios will be given out by competitive analysis.

Abstract:The main types of e-commerce performance models are discussed. Then associating with the analysis of the whole system performance and the software content, a single queue performance model and a closed queueing network performance model based on the queueing theory were built. From these two models, a simulation system was designed to prove the feasibility of the queueing network model. For being independent of a particular process and being easy to operate, the models are appropriate methods for analyzing and planning e-commerce performance in distribution environment.

Abstract:Due to e-business's variety of customers with different navigational patterns and demands, multiclass queuing network is a natural performance model for it. The open multi-class queuing network (QN) models are based on the assumption that no service center is saturated as a result of the combined loads of all the classes. Several formulas are used to calculate performance measures, including throughput, residence time, queue length, response time and the average number of requests. The solution technique of closed multi-class QN models is an approximate mean value analysis algorithm (MVA) based on three key equations, because the exact algorithm, needs huge time and space requirement. As mixed multi-class QN models, include some open and some closed classes, the open classes should be eliminated to create a closed multi-class QN so that the closed model algorithm can be applied. Some corresponding examples are given to show how to apply the algorithms mentioned in this article. These examples indicate that multi-class QN is a reasonably accurate model of e-business and can be solved efficiently.

Abstract:Based on Ski Problem,which is a classical problem in the area of on-line algorithms analysis,the On-line Equipment Renting-Buying Problem is originally proposed.The relevant mathematical model of the price continuous version is established.For the general case and a special case,which has a constant buying price,of the version,two competitive algorithms BS and RBS are developed respectively.The relevant competitive ratios are also given and proved.Furthermore,the lower bound of competitive ratio is studied and the theoretical proof is also presented.And then,some applications concerning the results of this paper are discussed.Finally,conclusions for the paper are made and the further study directions are pointed.

Abstract:Ordering and shipping of raw materials is a very important part of a company’s production operations. How to properly arrange the scheme to minimize the transportation and ordering cost is a great concern for enterprises. In this paper, two related models are proposed for the C problem of the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling: a supplier evaluation model based on Entropy Weight Method, TOPSIS Algorithm and other methods, and an ordering and transportation target planning model based on seasonality analysis and other methods. The former establishes seven supplier importance evaluation indexes based on quantitative analysis from two perspectives of supplier supply capability and business enterprise closeness, analyzes the influence weights of the seven indexes by Entropy Weight Method, and uses TOPSIS Algorithm to calculate the rating ranking of each supplier. The latter is based on the contribution rate of goods, material selection tendency, and corporate interest as the primary factors for enterprises to determine the scheme under different circumstances, and the future supply and demand is predicted through seasonal analysis to establish a target planning model to determine the shopping scheme.

Abstract:Electronic commerce (a.k.a. E-commerce) systems such as eBay and Taobao of Alibaba are becoming increasingly popular. Having an effective reputation system is critical to this type of internet service because it can assist buyers to evaluate the trustworthiness of sellers, and it can also improve the revenue for reputable sellers and E-commerce operators. We formulate a stochastic model to analyze an eBay-like reputation system and propose four measures to quantify its effectiveness: (1) new seller ramp up time, (2) new seller drop out probability, (3) long term profit gains for sellers, and (4) average per seller transaction gains for the E-commerce operator. Through our analysis, we identify key factors which influence these four measures. We propose a new insurance mechanism which consists of an insurance protocol and a transaction mechanism to improve the above four measures. We show that our insurance mechanism can reduce the ramp up time by around 87.2%, and guarantee new sellers ramp up before the deadline $T_w$ with a high probability (close to 1.0). It also increases the long term profit gains and average per seller transaction gains by at least 95.3%.

Mathematical and Computer Modelling of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The classic economic production quantity (EPQ) model assumes a continuous inventory-issuing policy for satisfying product demand and a perfect production for all items produced. However, in a real-life vendor–buyer integrated system, a multi-delivery policy is often used in lieu of continuous issuing policy and it is inevitable to generate defective items during a production run. This study addresses these issues by incorporating multiple deliveries of the finished batch, customer's inventory-holding cost and manufacturer's quality assurance cost into an EPQ model with the imperfect reworking of random defective items. Mathematical modelling and analyses are employed. Convexity of the long-run expected cost function is proved by the use of Hessian matrix equations, and the closed-form solutions in terms of the optimal lot size and optimal number of deliveries are obtained. The research results are demonstrated with a numerical example with a discussion on its practical usage.

Abstract:The explosive growth of Internet retailing offers an excellent opportunity to collect online prices at a disaggregate (e.g., individual store and/or individual product) level over time and to investigate the evolution of Internet markets. In this paper, we generalize the results obtained in existing static analyses and develop two random coefficient regression models to capture the dynamics of prices in the US online DVD market. On the basis of the models, we test hypotheses to compare the rates of change in price levels and in price dispersion at both pure dotcoms and online branches of multichannel retailers in the DVD market. The results, based on the analysis of 6759 price quotes over a 12-month period, suggest that multichannel retailers effectively differentiated themselves from pure dotcoms on nonprice dimensions so that they charged higher prices and maintained the difference in price levels throughout the time period of the study. Head-to-head price competition within pure dotcoms tended to be more severe. Our results also suggest that there is a sign of maturity in the current US online DVD market.

Abstract:Sponsored search mechanisms have drawn much attention from both academic community and industry in recent years since the seminal papers of [13] and [14]. However, most of the existing literature concentrates on the mechanism design and analysis within the scope of only one search engine in the market. In this paper we propose a mathematical framework for modeling the interaction of publishers, advertisers and end users in a competitive market. We first consider the monopoly market model and provide optimal solutions for both ex ante and ex post cases, which represents the long-term and short-term revenues of search engines respectively. We then analyze the strategic behaviors of end users and advertisers under duopoly and prove the existence of equilibrium for both search engines to co-exist from ex-post perspective. To show the more general ex ante results, we carry out extensive simulations under different parameter settings. Our analysis and observation in this work can provide useful insight in regulating the sponsored search market and protecting the interests of advertisers and end users.

Abstract:Cost reduction in production systems is one of the main concerns of most manufacturing industries. Achieving this goal requires the effective use of resources. Nowadays, due to the competitiveness of production and the need to reduce costs and deliver goods on time, equipment availability and prevention of unexpected stops are particularly important in industrial units. In recent years, equipment, machinery, and human resources have been the foundations of any organization. On the other hand, to increase the productivity and efficiency of providing services and achieve global standards, special attention should be paid to increase the efficiency of machinery and reducing downtime costs. This research conducted a mathematical formulation to find the best possible solution for the economic production quantity and inventory ordering by considering preventive maintenance. In this model, the success of organizations in providing services and increasing the quality depends on various reasons, such as maintenance and repair systems. In the proposed model, the defective items are considered, and the goal is to achieve an optimal amount of production in such a way that the costs of the entire system, including production cost, setup, maintenance, inspection, and rework costs, are minimized during a period per unit of time. The numerical results show that increasing the preventive maintenance periods leads to an upward trend in the total cost of the supply chain. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis shows that the longer the preventive maintenance on the machine, the higher reliability of the system as well as total costs will be achieved.

Abstract:Manufacturing firms operating in today’s competitive global markets must continuously find the appropriate manufacturing scheme and strategies to effectively meet customer needs for various types of quality of merchandise under the constraints of short order lead-time and limited in-house capacity. Inspired by the offering of a decision-making model to aid smooth manufacturers’ operations, this study builds an analytical model to expose the influence of the outsourcing of common parts, postponement policies, overtime options, and random scrapped items on the optimal replenishment decision and various crucial system performance indices of the multiproduct problem. A two-stage fabrication scheme is presented to handle the products’ commonality and the uptime-reduced strategies to satisfy the short amount of time before the due dates of customers’ orders. A screening process helps identify and remove faulty items to ensure the finished lot’s anticipated quality. Mathematical derivation assists us in finding the manufacturing relevant total cost function. The differential calculus helps optimize the cost function and determine the optimal stock-replenishing rotation cycle policy. Lastly, a simulated numerical illustration helps validate our research result’s applicability and demonstrate the model’s capability to disclose the crucial managerial insights and facilitate manufacturing-relevant decision making.

Abstract:Uncertainty plays a critical role in many real world applications where the decision maker is faced with multiple alternatives with different costs. These decisions arise in our daily lives, such as whether to rent an apartment or buy a house, which cannot be answered reliably without knowledge of the future. These decisionmaking problems are usually modeled as online rent-or-buy problems, such as the classical ski rental problem [4, 5, 8]. Two paradigms have been widely studied to deal with such uncertainty. On the one hand, online algorithms are designed without prior knowledge to the problem, and competitive ratio (CR) is used to characterize the goodness of the algorithm in lack of the future. On the other hand, machine learning is applied to address uncertainty by making future predictions via building robust models on prior data.

Abstract:We study a mathematical model for revenue management under competition with multiple sellers. The model combines the stochastic knapsack problem, a classic revenue management model, with a non coorperative game model that characterizes the sellers' rational behavior. We are able to establish a dynamic recursive procedure that incorporate the value function with the utility function of the games. The formalization of the dynamic recursion allows us to establish some fundamental structural properties.

Abstract:The growing popularity of online product review forums invites the development of models and metrics that allow firms to harness these new sources of information for decision support. Our work contributes in this direction by proposing a novel family of diffusion models that capture some of the unique aspects of the entertainment industry and testing their performance in the context of very early postrelease motion picture revenue forecasting. We show that the addition of online product review metrics to a benchmark model that includes prerelease marketing, theater availability and professional critic reviews substantially increases its forecasting accuracy; the forecasting accuracy of our best model outperforms that of several previously published models. In addition to its contributions in diffusion theory, our study reconciles some inconsistencies among previous studies with respect to what online review metrics are statistically significant in forecasting entertainment good sales.

Abstract:The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) was started in 1985 by Ben Fusaro while at Salisbury State University, and the Consortium on Mathematics and its Applications has sponsored the MCM from the beginning. The MCM is a contest in which teams of three undergraduate students compete with other undergraduate teams from schools all over the world. A key attraction of this competition is the emphasis on practical applications of mathematics to solve real—world problems. The authors implemented a successful MCM program at Eastern Oregon University which can serve as a model from which to build or enhance your own program. We have found that the MCM program promotes teamwork, generates enthusiasm in the students, and provides a forum in which small public or private schools can advantageously compete with larger research-oriented schools.
