Abstract:Prior to copulation, both males and females of the rice brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens (Stal),communicate by emitting substrate-transmitted acoustic signals by the stridulating organs. The specific signals play an important role in successful mating as they induce excitation of both sexes and orientation of the male to the female.Courtship signals of the rice-infesting biotypes of N.lugens differ from those of the Leersia-infesting N.lugens population in wave pattern, pulse repetition frequencies, and main vibration frequencies, which seem to be pre-mating barriers in hybridization between the two host associated poculations. However,no significant difference in courtship signals was found among the four rice-infesting biotypes.
