Abstract:Some attack scientific rationality, others defend it, but both miss the point. What both parties take to be scientific rationality is actually a species of irrationality masquerading as scientific rationality. The current orthodox conception of science, taken for granted by scientists and non-scientists alike, is irrational because it suppresses problematic assumptions, inherent in the aims of science, having to do with metaphysics, values, and political and social issues. We urgently need a more rigorous conception of science to be adopted and implemented that honestly acknowledges the problematic character of the aims of science, and seeks to improve them as science proceeds.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to make clear how the conception of rationality is used in modernity. For in modern society, there are two different opinions about Rationality, which is distinguished by some political and moral philosophers. However, what we concern are why they are so different, which one is correct, and what relations between them if both of they are products of modernity. In our opinion, human reason and its conception of rationality are not only the bases of modernity but also the causes that weaken and negate modernity itself. It is necessary for modernity to produce post-modernity.

Abstract:With Kant's enlightening maxims as the starting point, the author analyses the complicated relationship between enlightenment and reason, reason and rationalism, and reaches the following conclusion: when reason is defined as a kind of rationalism, enlightenment is separated from this very rationalism. Thus, it is not that enlightenment does not need rationalism but that rationalism confines itself and hinders the development of enlightenment.

Abstract:Rationality has been an intriguing topic for several decades. Even the scope of definition of rationality across different subjects varies. Several theories (e.g., game theory) initially evolved on the basis that agents (e.g., humans) are perfectly rational. One interpretation of perfect rationality is that agents always make the optimal decision which maximizes their expected utilities. However, subsequently this assumption was relaxed to include bounded rationality where agents have limitations in terms of computing resources and biases which prevents them to take the optimal decision. However, with recent advances in (quantum) computing, artificial intelligence (AI), science and technology etc., has led to the thought that perhaps the concept of rationality would be augmented with machine intelligence which will enable agents to take decision optimally with higher regularity. However, there are divergent views on this topic. The paper attempts to put forward a recent survey (last five years) of research on these divergent views. These viewsmay be grouped into three schools of thoughts. The first school is the one which is sceptical of progress of AI and believes that human intelligencewill always supersede machine intelligence. The second school of thought thinks that advent of AI and advances in computing will help in better understanding of bounded rationality. Third school of thought believes that bounds of bounded rationality will be extended by advances in AI and various other fields. This survey hopes to provide a starting point for further research.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation of the concept of science in modern Chinese thought from four perspectives. The first aspect concentrates on the Japanese origin of the concept of science, analyzing this concept through the formation of the late Qing branches of learning, fenke zhixue, and the knowledge system of positivism. The second aspect takes gezhi (investigating things and extending knowledge), qiongli (exhaustion of principle) and other concepts as clues and analyzes the relationship between the concepts of modern science and the study of the school of principle lixue to show the breakdown and connection between scientific concepts fused in the three aspects of nature, morality and politics and the Confucian world view. The third aspect takes as its focus the systematization of scientific research, analyzing the agencies of science, scientific publications and the scientific community's formation and the influence of these elements on society and culture. The fourth aspect takes the May Fourth debate on East-West notions of civilization and the debate on science and metaphysics as its focus, discussing scientific language, the debate between civilizations and the formation of the fields of humanities and social sciences.

Abstract:The rationalism in economics is the most important and noticeable genealogies in the development of economic thoughts. Firstly, we clarify the rationalism which we advocate by refusing instrumental rationality and explaining the meaning of “Vernunft”. Then, we turn to analyze the two part of the economic rationalism system, the hypothesis of economic rationalism and rational methodology. Through the meaning of the hypothesis of economic rationalism, we explain the foundation of the rational paradoxes, and prove that the economic rationalism is reasonable. But we must acknowledge that there is some deficiency in economic rationalism. By analyzing the Newcomb’s Problem, we know that the rational method has its limits. So finally we reach the conclusion that we should insist a kind of prudential rationalism in economics.

Abstract:The logical positivists has failed on the problems of language, objectivity and line dividing, so they do not have sufficient reasons to remove the value problem outside the ration range according to the dichotomy of fact and value. They deny any kind of possibility of rational discussion in the value domain, and try to deprive our rights to critically reconsider our social order and our political and law system. On the other hand, value objectivists, lead us to the superstition to the determinacy, when they understand value problem coming the way according to objective science. We must acknowledge that there is some kind of possibility of rational discussion in the value domain, when it is talked about, the ration it needs is unable to achieve and absolutely grasps the finally understanding of the world and the life, but can complete its historical mission. Thus, the appropriate manner to treat value question must be one kind of "the moral realism", this kind of theory acknowledges that we can carry on the rational defense to the moral question, but denies any kind of morals system or value set.

Abstract:This paper attempts to reconcile the claims that the mind is both flat (Chater, 2018) and highly rational (Oaksford & Chater, 2020). According to the flat mind hypothesis, the mind is a mass of inconsistent and contradictory fragments of experience. However, standard accounts of rationality from formal epistemology argue that to be rational, our beliefs must be consistent, and we must believe all the logical consequences of our beliefs. A social account of rationality is developed based on Brandom's (1994) logical expressivism, in which respecting the norms of logic and probability theory is still central but where these standards apply to our public commitments in social dialogical contexts rather than to our individual belief systems (Skovgaard‐Olsen, 2017). According to this account, even if someone's individual beliefs are inconsistent, they cannot be condemned as irrational if they acknowledge the inconsistency and seek to resolve it. It is shown how this approach interacts with people's fragmented and shallow world knowledge, and its social distribution yields some counterintuitive consequences, such as it sometimes being rational individually not seeking to resolve contradictions. Other consequences of this social expressivist approach are considered, including for dual process theories of reasoning, our view of beliefs, the status of logic, and Fodor's (1983) view of central systems. It is concluded that people can have flat minds and yet be highly rational.

Abstract:An attempt to redefine science in the 21st century (BK Jennings, On the Nature of Science, Physics in Canada, 63(7) 2007) has abandoned traditional notions of natural law and objective reality, blurred the distinctions between natural science and natural history, elevated Occam's razor from an epistemological preference to a scientific principle, and elevated peer-review and experimental care as equals with repeatable experiment as arbiters of scientific validity. Our comments review the long-established axioms of the scientific method, remind readers of the distinctions between science and history, disprove the generality of Occam's razor by counter example, and highlight the risks of accepting additional scientific arbiters as equal to repeatable experiment.

Abstract:Both Albert Einstein and Erwin Schr\"{o}dinger have defined what science is. Einstein includes not only physics, but also all natural sciences dealing with both organic and inorganic processes in his definition of science. According to Schr\"{o}dinger, the present scientific worldview is based on the two basic attitudes of comprehensibility and objectivation. On the other hand, the notion of religion is quite equivocal and unless clearly defined will easily lead to all sorts of misunderstandings. Does science, as defined, encompass the whole of reality? More importantly, what is the whole of reality and how do we obtain data for it? The Christian worldview considers a human as body, mind, and spirit (soul), which is consistent with Cartesian ontology of only three elements: matter, mind, and God. Therefore, is it possible to give a precise definition of science showing that the conflicts are actually apparent and not real?

Abstract:Understanding science is one of the most important goals of science education.There are two different approaches to scientific activities: one is the rational tradition of emphasizing knowledge,and the other is the utilitarian tradition of emphasizing effectiveness.Rationalism is originated from the Greek academic tradition to seek truth,while utilitarianism can be traced back to the Age of the Renaissance.As two scientific approaches,both utilitarianism and idealism have their legitimacy of existence,as well as their limitations.In order to develop science education,disseminate scientific ideas and carry forward scientific spirit,it is necessary to maintain certain degree of tension between utilitarianism and idealism.

Abstract:Descartes and Leibniz are two representative rationalists in 17th century.Traditionally,we believed that they had abandoned scholasticism of middle age and got rid of the theology influence in Western philosophy.But according to their interpretations to the transubstantiation in traditional Christian sacrament,we find that they had a closer relation with old era than our traditional points.And owing to their interpretations,we can find those problems that Kant has claimed in his theory in 18th century in modern rationalism.

Abstract:Taking a broad historical line, we discuss major aspects of rationality that can be analyzed in a logical and computational perspective. Topics include classical notions from the foundations of computability, insights from the development of computer science and AI, and the richer picture of rationality emerging in current logical studies of agency. We also discuss two challenges. Distributed computing and evolutionary games replace ’high rationality’ by ’low rationality’ in behavior, machine learning defies classical views of representation and inference. Both trigger new logical themes in the study of rationality.

Abstract:This article provides a synthesis and overview of a theory of cognitive development, rational constructivism. The basic tenets of this view are as follows: (a) Initial state: Human infants begin life with a set of proto-conceptual primitives. These early representations are not in the format of a language of thought. (b) Mature state: Human adults represent the world in terms of a set of domain-specific intuitive theories. (c) Three types of mechanisms account for learning, development, and conceptual change: language and symbol learning, Bayesian inductive learning, and constructive thinking. (d) The child is an active learner, and cognitive agency is part and parcel of development. I will discuss each of these tenets, and provide an overview of the kind of empirical evidence that supports this view. This is a non-Piagetian view though it is in the spirit of constructivist theories of development; this view emphasizes the utility of formal computational models in understanding learning and developmental change. Abstract:Since the 16-17 centuries scientific methods have been playing a key role in the development of the scientific-technological age.There are three types of general scientific method,i.e.,induction-confirmation method,deduction-falsification method,and abduction-explanation method.They correspond to logical positivism,falsificationism,and historicism in philosophy of science respectively.Based on the reasoning procedure of these three scientific methods,and the development of the three schools of thought,this paper is trying to show that scientific methods themselves are characteristically both critical and creative,and that philosophical methods,analyses,arguments and reflections,are characteristically both critical and creative as well.This paper also clarifies the theoretical basis,requirements and criteria for judging critical-creative thinking,and furthermore,it has given a tentative suggestion that we may make rational reconstructions and appraisals of scientific and philosophical methods by the inference to the best explanation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new definition of science based on the distinction between the activity of scientists and the product of that activity: the former is denoted (lower-case) science and the latter (upper-case) Science. These definitions are intended to clarify the nature of scientific knowledge, its authority as well as its limitations, and how scientific knowledge differs from other forms of human knowledge. The body of knowledge we call Science is exemplified by elementary arithmetic: it has the following properties: (i) Science is collective, public knowledge; (ii) Science is universal and free of contradiction; (iii) Science emerges from science; (iv) Science is nevertheless bathed in ignorance and subject to change. These properties imply that many questions that are of great interest to humanity are out of reach to Science, since they necessarily involve individual and group commitments and beliefs. Examples are questions of ethics, religion, politics, art and even technology, for which diversity is a fundamental virtue.
