Abstract:Pond ecosystem not only provides essential agricultural irrigation and washing water, but also stores rainwater in rainy seasons. However, the pollution status of pond system around Poyang Lake was seldom studied. Here, we investigated the water and sediment chemical characteristics, phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates, as well as habitat conditions of 23 rural ponds around Poyang Lake. Results showed that water quality of 91.3% rural ponds was inferior V (National Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard of China) with the main pollutants of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). In rural ponds, fifty-nine species of phytoplankton and nineteen benthic macroinvertebrates were identified, Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta were the dominant phytoplankton groups, and oligochaetes and aquatic insects were the most dominant taxa among all benthic macroinvertebrates. And an integrated evaluation system based on chemical, biological and physical index was set up to assess the pollution status of rural ponds. According to the composite integrity index, 2 rural ponds (8.70%) were classified as Very poor, 9 rural ponds (39.13%) were classified as Poor, 9 rural ponds (39.13%) were classified as Fair, and 3 rural ponds (13.04%) were classified as Good. And the composite integrity index in 4 counties followed the sequence of Xingzi County (0.598, Fair) > Jinxian County (0.425, Fair) > Xinjian County (0.379, Poor) > Nanchang County (0.335, Poor). Therefore, measures should be taken for improving the water quality, habitat conditions and biotic community of rural ponds, especially for the severely polluted rural ponds in Xinjian and Nanchang County.

Abstract:The degradation of farmland eco-system is the main reason for low agricultural pro-ductivity and poverty of the local farmers.The object of this research aims at finding out the de-gree and distribution law of farmland ecological degradation,which is the foundation and prereq-uisite for the restoration and rehabilitation of farmland eco-system,and also is the important means of improving the productivity of farmland and alleviating the poverty of farmers of the Poyang Lake zone. With the method of the extension engineering,this paper evaluates the farmland eco-system of the selected area which is typically characteristic of the Poyang Lake zone.The result of evalu-ation shows that the degradation of farmland eco-system in the selected area is extremely seri-ous,the degraded land area covers16633.85hm 2 ,which accounts for39.96%of the total se-lected farmland.Based on the mapping of the evaluated result,it clearly displays that the de-graded farmland is mainly distributed along the Poyang Lake and in low hilly area.According to the result of evaluation,this paper analyzes the mechanism of the degradation,and explains its current status and evolving law of farmland ecological degradation.The degrada-tion of farmland eco-system is mainly due to constant decline of vegetation cover rate,which lead to water and soil loss.Inappropriate human activ ities such as excessive exploitation of land re-sources and deficient infrastructural investment,to a certain extent,inevitably result in the degradation of the farmland ecosystem.At the end,this paper puts forward three main measures to restore and reconstruct the de-graded farmland eco-system in Poyang Lake zone,that is improving the vegetation cover rate,restoring woodland and wetland from cropland and increasing the agricultural infrastructure in-put.

Abstract:To analysis the structure feature and spatial distribution of land use in Poyang Lake region,we analyzed the land readjustment potential in Poyang Lake region from the land uses of agriculture,construction,project area,wetland and so on according to the geographical environment and the goal of land use.Base on the different land use types,the realization way of the land readjustment potential was proposed.For different local areas the land readjustment should pay attention on different aspects.Except increasing the land utilizing area and improving land production capacity,the land readjustment of Poyang Lake region should execute the“Preventing flood and returning cultivated land back to lake”project to improve the local living environment and ecological environment,which will prevent the natural disas-ter,keep away from poverty,change the looks,and enlarge benefit.

Abstract:The study on non-point source(NPS) pollution of Poyang Lake is very important during the period of Poyang Lake ecological economic construction.Land use situation of the Poyang Lake was studied based on GIS.By analysis of the using amount and intensity of chemical fertilizers and the status of pesticides,the discharging amount of the pollutants from the two sources was estimated,and the influence on the ecological environment of Poyang Lake is explored.Analysis of the data shows that chemical fertilizers and pesticides are the main agricultural non-point source pollutions in Poyang Lake area.And the corresponding non-point source pollution control technologies-the best management measures are suggested.

Abstract:In recent years, with the construction and operation of the Three Gorges Project, a series of changes have taken place in the relationship between the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake. Changes in hydrological conditions have led to problems in the Poyang Lake area such as early dry season, extended dry duration, and lower dry water level. As the largest freshwater lake in my country, Poyang Lake is an important treasure house of water resources in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It is of great significance to study the protection and management of Poyang Lake under the changing relationship between rivers and lakes. This article analyzes the impact of changes in the relationship between rivers and lakes on the hydrological situation of the Poyang Lake area, and sorts out the problems of the ecological environment under the changes of rivers and lakes. On this basis, combined with the ongoing Poyang Lake water conservancy project, the importance of the construction of the hub is analyzed, and relevant suggestions for the current problems facing Poyang Lake are put forward.

Abstract:The Hydraulic project is an important part of Ecological Economic Zone Program in the Poyang Lake.The characters of the wetland ecological system in the Poyang Lake Basin were analyzed,based on the public questions concerning about the impact that may be brought by the project.The goal and primary objects of protection were proposed,while the main ecological problems,such as the shortage of water,the worsening of water quality,wetland degradation and the decline of fishery resources were discussed.The idea of the project was introduced and the possible effects were analyzed.Moreover,some suggestions such as to carry out scientific demonstrating and scheming,to design the ecological system,and to execute adequate ecological operation and dynamic management were propound.

Abstract:Poyang Lake basin is an important part of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangzi River.It is a wetland of international importance which is rich in biodiversity and is listed as the global key region of biodiversity.It is an important guarantee for global biodiversity protection,ecological security of the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River,and optimal allocation of water resources.However,due to intensive human activities in this area,irrational exploitation of resources,and excessive number of extreme weather events,the basin is facing a huge threat.This paper analyzes the characteristics and threats for the Poyang lake basin,attempting to make a generalization,review and evaluation of the importance of biodiversity and important initiatives of Chinese government,in order to offer a reference for academic discussion.

Abstract:The purposes of this paper are to assess the coupling degree between the carrying capacity of land-water resources and economic development in the Ecological Economic Zone of Poyang Lake, and then analyze the optimal way so as to promote the coupling degree of the two resources. Method of information entropy was employed to determine the guideline system of coupling degree and to quantify them. The results indicate that 1) the coupling degree is different. The degree within urban area of a city is much higher than that of a county;2) the land-water carrying capacity and economic development is not synchronous. Most of the urban regions belong to the low environmental harmony pattern, and most of that of the countries belong to the phase of lagged economy;3) the spatial distribution of the coupling degree changes from higher to lower in the form of the concentric circles given the lake areas as the core;4) the strategy of adaptive management and ecological barrier construction should be selected in environmental lag areas. The strategy of urbanization and industrial layout optimization should be selected in the economic lag regions. It is concluded that the synchronism optimization strategy of resource and economic will provide a new research perspective for the balanced development in the Ecological Economic Zone of Poyang Lake.

Abstract:Wetlands are unique ecosystems formed by the interaction between land and water on Earth. Poyang Lake, which is a part of China’s largest freshwater lake wetland, is well known for its ecological and economic importance. This study uses a social-ecological system (SES) framework that integrates watershed and human activities; we used action scenarios to analyse the influencing factors, solutions, and feedback mechanisms involved in the SES framework. We chose Nanchang, Jiujiang, and Shangrao in the Poyang Lake wetlands of the Jiangxi province as the study areas to provide a problem-oriented analytical strategy for the organic interface between ecological conservation and green development. The key issues indicate that the Poyang Lake region faces multiple problems, such as ecosystem structural changes and environmental pollution, caused by anthropological activities, inefficient implementation of conservation policies, and insufficient funding for pollution prevention and control. Our findings provide a systematic solution for major conservation and development issues in the Poyang Lake region and are adapted to the characteristics of the lake. We also provide a theoretical reference and direction for the implementation of green development and modernisation of ecological governance in the Great Lakes basin in China.

Urbanization Quality Evaluation and Spatial Differences Analysis in Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone

Abstract:The evaluation index system of urbanization has been constructed based on the structure-function relationship,and then methods of information entropy and clustering analysis were employed to assess the quality of urbanization and optimize the pattern of urban space in Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone in 2011. The results shows that:( 1) it is obvious that the level of urbanization distribution from 0. 008 to 0. 141 in Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone,with the maximum regional urbanization in Nanchang city and the minimum in Wuning county;( 2) as to spatial distribution,the six urban built-up areas with high level of urbanization show punctuate distribution,the remaining 25 counties with lower level of urbanization with the aquatic-terrestrial eco-zone of Poyang Lake as the core and decline gradually from the core to outwards in the form of circle;( 3) as to the relationship between the structure and function,it shows that the score proportion of social income is much higher than the score of resident living and economic industry in the structure of urbanization.At the same time,it is found that the scores of the basic education,living environment and health function is highly relative,while the employment appeal is relatively inadequate and basic social security level is relatively low in the function of urbanization;( 4) the space optimization also suggests that the areas of urbanization efficiency and sub-high efficiency should improve the urbanization structure function,while those areas of effect and efficiency of urbanization should choose the structure and function of urban development strategies. The urbanization quality measures and spatial layout optimization based on relationship between structure and function will provide a new research perspective for the health development of urbanization in the Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone.

Abstract:Since 1950s,the land resources utilization of Poyang lake area has experienced development and variation of "land reclamation—land deterioration,ecological destruction—land renovation,ecological construction".The research by RS,GIS technology demonstrates that the land deterioration area in the whole region at present is 533180 hm~2,accounting for 20% of the total area.The variation of land resources utilization and driving power of land deterioration of Poyang lake are mainly influenced with natural condition and relative policy execution,social and economic condition and land utilization idea of peasants,in which,the influence of precipitation,farm land deficiency,city and town land utilization expansion,regional poverty are mostly prominent.Combined with ideas of land renovation,ecological restoration,ecological countryside construction,land policy etc.,the control mode directed against land deterioration is suggested,providing reference for sustainable utilization and deterioration control of land in the lake area.
An Investigation of Enhanced Recessions in Poyang Lake: Comparison of Yangtze River and Local Catchment Impacts

Abstract:Changes in lake hydrological regimes and the associated impacts on water supplies and ecosystems are internationally recognized issues. During the past decade, the persistent dryness of Poyang Lake (the largest freshwater lake in China) has caused water supply and irrigation crises for the 12.4 million inhabitants of the region. There is conjecture as to whether this dryness is caused by climate variability and/or human activities. This study examines long-term datasets of catchment inflow and Lake outflow, and employs a physically-based hydrodynamic model to explore catchment and Yangtze River controls on the Lake's hydrology. Lake water levels fell to their lowest during 2001-2010 relative to previous decades. The average Lake size and volume reduced by 154 km(2) and 11 x 10(8) m(3) during the same period, compared to those for the preceding period (1970-2000). Model simulations demonstrated that the drainage effect of the Yangtze River was the primary causal factor. Modeling also revealed that, compared to climate variability impacts on the Lake catchment, modifications to Yangtze River flows from the Three Gorges Dam have had a much greater impact on the seasonal (September-October) dryness of the Lake. Yangtze River effects are attenuated in the Lake with distance from the River, but nonetheless propagate some 100 km to the lake's upstream limit. Proposals to build additional dams in the upper Yangtze River and its tributaries are expected to impose significant challenges for the management of Poyang Lake. Hydraulic engineering to modify the flow regime between the Lake and the Yangtze River would somewhat resolve the seasonal dryness of the Lake, but will likely introduce other issues in terms of water quality and aquatic ecosystem health, requiring considerable further research. Abstract:As the largest wetland in Asia, the largest freshwater wetland and one of the ten Ecological Function Conservation in China, Poyang Lake, located in Jiangxi Province, south-eastern China, plays a significant role in various aspects like biodiversity conservation, flood and drought defence and ecological balance maintenance. Meanwhile, Poyang Lake area boasts natural advantages in tourism development with an abundance of ecological resources, unique landscapes and profound cultural connotation. The SWOT Analysis (an analytical method based on the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat), was adopted in this paper to make further and more detailed analysis to the development of the ecological tourism in Poyang Lake Wetland. In hope of offering reference to the sustainable development of ecological tourism in Poyang Lake Wetland, the paper put forward several suggestions and strategies on the basis of ecological protection and rational exploitation.
Spatiotemporal distribution of water pollution and water quality evaluation

Abstract:By setting up water monitoring points in Poyang Lake, water samples were collected from the points in several intervals in the research to studying the spatiotemporal characteristics of water quality and influencing factors. Based on fuzzy comprehensive theory, this paper has evaluated the water quality in Poyang Lake by using the characteristics of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. The results show that water quality of Poyang Lake is relatively good for now; however, water pollution may become more severe. The control of pollutants flowing into lake, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and phenol, is a realistic problem that must be faced when seeking the strategy for rapid economic development in the area around Poyang Lake, even in Jiangxi Province. This study suggests that spatial analysis of further data at different scales should be a vital part of identifying the fundamental spatio-temporal distribution of water quality. © 2011 IEEE.
Study on the Hot Spots and Dynamic Mechanism of Land Use Transition in Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone

Abstract:Identifying the hot spots of land use transition and exploring its mechanism is significant for protecting land ecological environment and promoting regional sustainable development.Based on RS/GIS technique,land use dynamic degree model,hot spot analysis and canonical correlation analysis methods are adopted to reveal the hot spots and dominant driving factors of land use transition in Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone from 2000 to 2014.Furthermore,the dynamic mechanism of land use transition is explained from the perspective of land supply and demand.Major conclusions are drawn as follows:(1) The dramatic transformation among various land use types has occurred since 2000 in the lakeside,and the sharply declining of farmland and ecological land use type and the aggressive expansion of construction land pose great threat to land ecology.The arable land and forest and grassland decreased 15 740 hm2 and 15 152 hm2,respectively,whereas the area of construction land increased 47 138 hm2 within 10 km of Poyang Lake from 2000 to 2014;(2) The regional economic center and the main roads have significant radiation effect on land use transition,and the regional spatial pattern with high frequency of land use transition presents a shape of"#".From 2000 to 2014,the integrated land use dynamic degree gradually decreased from 2.7659‰ to 1.059‰ within 10 km of the main roads;(3) Four rapid transition zones were formed taking Nanchang,Jiujiang,Jingdezhen and Yingtan as the centers;And (4) the conflict between land supply and demand caused by socio-economic development triggers the changes of land use morphology.The authors argue that the eco-environment buffer area should be established and strict restriction on land development should be implemented around Poyang Lake.Besides,scientific planning of economic development of the hot spots is in urgency to promote intensive land use.

Abstract:Poyang Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in China and the only two remaining lakes in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It is an internationally important wetland with important ecological value. In recent years, due to the influence of natural and human factors, the ecology of Poyang Lake International Wetland has been greatly damaged. Using relevant research models and methods to study and predict land-use change can provide a scientific basis for relevant departments to manage land and has important demonstration significance for biodiversity conservation and ecological function restoration of wetlands with important ecological value. Based on Landsat remote sensing images from 1986 to 2020, land-use information data were obtained by supervised classification interpretation, and five land-use type maps with an interval of about 8 years were generated by ENVI and ArcGIS software. The land-use change of Poyang Lake wetland was analyzed by using land-use transfer matrix and land-use dynamic attitude. The land-use distribution in 2030 was predicted by the FLUS model. Based on the gray correlation model, the driving force of land-use change was discussed. The results show that the wetland land-use types in Poyang Lake will change greatly from 1986 to 2020: construction land, mudflat, paddy field, and dry land changed significantly and showed an increasing trend. The area of water and grassland decreased on the whole, and the transferred area was large, which was mainly transferred to construction land, paddy field, and dry land. The area of woodland increased slowly, but the change range was not large from the perspective of dynamic attitude. The change of wetland area of reed flat decreased first and then increased, and the overall land-use change was relatively gentle. Through the FLUS model prediction, it is found that the water area of the study area will be greatly reduced in 2030, the area of woodland and reed flat will be greatly increased, and the ecological situation will gradually improve. According to the gray correlation analysis, the total population and annual precipitation are the main driving factors of land-use change in the Poyang Lake wetland. This study studies the land-use change and driving force from the regional wetland scale, which can provide a theoretical basis for the future international important wetland protection and land resource management of Poyang Lake. At the same time, it provides a reference for further regional wetland habitat protection and ecological network construction.
