Abstract:ABSTRACTWhile assessing the environmental impact of nuclear power plants, researchers have focused their attention on radiocarbon (14C) owing to its high mobility in the environment and important radiological impact on human beings. The 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) is the first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China that adopted helium as primary coolant and graphite spheres containing tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated particles as fuel elements. A series of experiments on the 14C source terms in HTR-10 was conducted: (1) measurement of the specific activity and distribution of typical nuclides in the irradiated graphite spheres from the core, (2) measurement of the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant, and (3) measurement of the amount of 14C discharged in the effluent from the stack. All experimental data on 14C available for HTR-10 were summarized and analyzed using theoretical calculations. A sensitivity study on the total porosity, open porosity, and percentage of closed pores that became open after irradiating the matrix graphite was performed to illustrate their effects on the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant and activity amount of 14C in various deduction routes.

Abstract:In this work, the development of production of long-lived isomer {sup 178m2}Hf has been presented and the characteristics of relevant pathways have also been addressed. Considering the design parameters and operational status of reactors and accelerators, the possible approachs for {sup 178m2}Hf isomer production has been put forword in research programe. Through calculating the basic parameters of prodution of {sup 178m2}Hf isomer from two kinds of nuclear reactions {sup 176}Yb ({alpha}, 2n) and {sup 179}Hf (n, 2n), and camparing the advantages and disadvantages of these two production methods, an approriate scheme of producing 10{sup 13} {sup 178}m{sup 2}Hf nuclei has been designed. Abstract:With its long half-life (5730 years) and high mobility in the environment, 14C is a radionuclide of considerable interest in nuclear power production. Carbon-14 is present in virtually all parts of nuclear reactor primary system and has a high production rate. It is released to the environment through gaseous and liquid discharges and though the disposal of solid radioactive waste. This paper summarizes existing scientific understanding of 14C issues surrounding nuclear power production. Two main purposes of the paper are: (1) To provide the basic/up-to-date understanding of the life cycle of 14C, starting from its production in reactors, to eventually its transport and its potential incorporation in natural cycles; (2) To present the technical issues in current 14C waste management. The emphasis of the paper is on Light Water Reactors (LWRs, which include Pressured Water Reactors-PWRs, and Boiling Water Reactors-BWRs) and Heavy Water Reactors (HWRs-CANDU type reactors). Major issues with 14C in HTGR are also addressed.

Analysis of Tritium Production and Distribution in Htr-Pm

Abstract:The research on radiological impact of tritium is highly concerned in high temperature gas-cooled reactors. In order to better assess the environmental performance of HTR-PM (HTR demonstration project with 2 × 250MW plants), analysis of tritium behavior in HTR-PM is conducted in this paper. The main production sources of tritium are the ternary fission in the fuel and neutron capture reactions of some nuclides. Based on the tight interactions between tritium sources and sinks, differential equations are built to describe tritium behavior in primary and secondary loop. Specific analysis is conducted to tritium permeation through heat exchanger walls to secondary loop, considering the oxidation of alloys used for heat exchanger. Applied with the parameters of HTR-PM, tritium concentration in primary and secondary loop is calculated, and the amount of tritium released to the environment is evaluated. The evaluation shows that the amount of tritium released to the environment is less than the limit value prescribed by Chinese regulation on radiation protection. The calculation results can also be applied to the safety analysis and used to guide the design of relevant systems and equipments for the HTR-PM.

Abstract:The 10MW High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor-test Module (HTR-10) is a graphite-moderated helium gas-cooled reactor. The graphite is also used as the basis material of the coated-particle fuel and the reactor core structure material. The sources and the diffusion property of the tritium and carbon-14 in HTR-10 have been analyzed, and the inventory amount in core and the equilibrium concentrations in the primary helium coolant circuit have been calculated, based on the release, transportation, deposition and remove model. Tritium and carbon-14 are mainly generated from the heavy nuclei fission reaction and the activation reactions of the impurity. Due to their own characteristics, the tritium and the carbon-14 generated during the operation have an effect on the environment and the public radiation dose for normal and accidents, which may deserve careful attention. Majority of the tritium and the carbon-14 is trapped in the intact particle fuels, and part of those entering the primary circuit could be removed by the helium purification system, which can purify all the helium coolant every 20 hours under normal operation. A tiny fraction can leak into the environment. To verify the calculated results, a test loop is designed on the basis of the helium purification system. The experiment results will be compared with the calculations, and provide more information about HTR-10, promoting the development of HTR-10.
14C Release in Various Chemical Forms With Gaseous Effluents From the Paks Nuclear Power Plant

Abstract:We present results of airborne 14 C emission measurements from the Paks PWR nuclear power plant. Long-term release of 14 C in the form of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were simultaneously measured. The results of internal gas-proportional and liquid scintillation counting agree well with theoretical assessments of 14 C releases from pressurized water reactors. The mean value of the 14 C concentration in discharged air is 130Bqm -3 and the normalized release is equal to 740GBq/GW e · yr. > 95% of 14 C released is in the form of hydrocarbons, ca 4% is apportioned to CO 2 , and <1% to CO. Tree-ring measurements were also made and indicated a minute increase of 14 C content in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant.

Abstract:The very high temperature reactor (VHTR) is a development of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) and one of the six proposed Generation IV reactor concept candidates. The 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) is the first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China. A sampling system for the measurement of carbon-14 ( 14 C) was established in the helium purification system of the HTR-10 primary loop, which could sample 14 C from the coolant at three locations. The results showed that activity concentration of 14 C in the HTR-10 primary coolant was 1.2(1) × 10 2 Bq/m 3 (STP). The production mechanisms, distribution characteristics, reduction routes, and release types of 14 C in HTR-10 were analyzed and discussed. A theoretical model was built to calculate the amount of 14 C in the core of HTR-10 and its concentration in the primary coolant. The activation reaction of 13 C has been identified to be the dominant 14 C source in the core, whereas in the primary coolant, it is the activation of 14 N. These results can supplement important information for the source term analysis of 14 C in HTR-10 and promote the study of 14 C in HTGRs.

Abstract:To understand the spatial distribution of 14C discharged from Qinshan nuclear power plant, where two HWRs and four PWRs are on commercial operation, simulation using Gaussian plume model was carried out. The predicted values were compared with the measured 14C results of moss samples collected in 2010. A good fit was found between these two data sets, indicating that the spatial distribution of 14C follows a Gaussian model. It can be concluded that HWRs are the dominant 14C sources at Qinshan site and meteorological influences is the leading factor affecting the distribution of 14C.

Abstract:The high temperature gas-cooled reactor pebble-bed module (HTR-PM) in China received much attention for its inherent safety performance and high thermal efficiency. The generation mechanism, distribution, reduction route, and release type of tritium (H-3) in HTR-PM are presented with a complete theoretical model. The calculation results indicate the majority of H-3 in the core is generated by the activation reaction of B-10. The activity concentration of H-3 in the primary loop and the specific activity of H-3 in the secondary loop at the operating equilibrium are computed as 3.69 × 10 6 Bq/m3STPof helium and 4.22 × 10 4 Bq/kg of water, respectively. The H-3 sampling measurement in HTR-PM has been designed to collect data from the primary coolant, from the liquid waste storage tank, from the secondary coolant, and from the liquid and gaseous effluents, separately. In this paper, the design of H-3 sampling positions in the helium purification system is discussed. The H-3 sampling measurement from the primary helium in HTR-PM has been improved, which can provide reliable activity concentration data of H-3 in the primary loop and supply accurate evaluation for the efficiency of the helium purification system.

Terrestrial Distribution of 14C in the Vicinity of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China

Abstract:We used accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) to study radiocarbon-specific activity levels in agricultural and botanical samples (moss and pine needles) distributed within a 6.5-km radius of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The 14C-specific activity in moss samples (ranging from 265.6 to 223.0 Bq/kg C) decreased with increased distance from the stacks of Plant III (heavy water reactor) and reached the background level (223.8 Bq/kg C) at 6.5 km distance. Compared to the pine needles, the moss was a better indicator for investigating the 14C distribution near Qinshan NPP. The 14C-specific activity distribution in moss samples showed that the diffusion of 14C discharged from the Qinshan NPP was affected by both geographical and meteorological factors. Excess 14C-specific activity in the food samples ranged from 8.5 to 13.0 Bq/kg C (except for rice samples), resulting in a minimal radiation dose of 0.5 μSv per year to the public.

Abstract:An irradiated graphite sphere of the 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) has been studied experimentally with a mechanical disintegration way and a suite of radiochemical analysis methods, including the total alpha/beta counting measurement and the absolute activity measurement with a liquid scintillation counter and a high-purity germanium detector connected to a multichannel analyzer. The key nuclides in this irradiated graphite sphere were determined, which were H-3, C-14, Co-60, and Cs-137. The radial distributions of the specific activity for each nuclide were obtained experimentally and compared with theoretical calculations. The production mechanisms of H-3, C-14, Co-60, and Cs-137 in the irradiated graphite sphere of HTR-10 were discussed individually, and the generation sources for each nuclide were analyzed explicitly. Current results can supply important experimental data for source term analysis of HTR-10, and provide useful research reference for the decommissioning work and waste minimization of high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs).

Abstract:The Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) is one of the six proposed Generation IV reactor concepts. The HTR-10, a 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled reactor was a helium cooled, graphite-moderated, and thermal neutron spectrum reactor. Since tritium (H-3) has an effect on the environment and public radiation dose, it has received more and more attention in the environmental impact assessment of nuclear facilities. Recently, several experiments on source terms in HTR-10 have been run, of which preliminary measurements indicated H-3 was an important nuclide in the primary loop of HTR-10. The production mechanism, distribution characteristic, reduction route, and release type of total H-3 in HTR-10 were analyzed and discussed in this technical note. A theoretical model was established to calculate the total activity of H-3 in the reactor core and activity concentration of H-3 in the primary loop of HTR-10. This model indicated that the majority of total H-3 was produced by ternary fission reactions and H-3 in the primary helium was mainly generated from activation reactions of impurities in the reactor core. The research results can provide useful information for the experimental measurement of H-3 in HTR-10, and promote the study of H-3 in high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs).

Abstract:Protactinium-231 has an attractive potential to reduce the initial excess-reactivity and to be effectively converted to the fissile nuclide 233U through 232U. Thus 231Pa serves as the burnable fertile material helping to achieve a long-life core. However the natural abundance of 231Pa is negligible. Therefore the production of 231Pa has been studied in a fusion blanket with a ThO2 zone which is irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons to cause the (n 2n) reaction in 232Th at a neutron wall load of 1MW/m2. The mass balance of 231Pa shows that the one fusion reactor with approximately 1.1 GWth and 1951t of ThO2 supports the one pebble bed-type gas cooled reactor with approximately 1 GWth and 10-year lifetime (700 GWD/t). It is also shown that the attractive fertile nuclide 231Pa is produced with a fissile nuclide 233U and a small fraction of 232U which enhances the proliferation resistance for the fissile product 233U due to the generation of high decay heat and strong gamma rays. In the present study the isotopic fraction of 232U is increased to over 2.4% by controlling the neutron spectrum in the ThO2 zone. As a result the fissile nuclide 233U could be always protected by 232U throughout the thorium fuel cycle based on 231 Pa.

Abstract:Environemtnal 14C levels around various types of nuclear installations within the UK have been monitored during recent years. Enhanced 14C levels have been detected around both the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant as Sellafield and the thermal nuclear power station complex at Hunterston. From these measurements, the radiological impact of the 14C discharges on the local population is assessed. It is conservatively estimated that the 14CO2 emissions from Sellafield between 1952 and 1985 could have delivered an 8·4 man Sv collective effective dose equivalent commitment to the population living within 40 km of the site. The maximum possible collective dose to the population within 15 km of Hunterston in 1984 was 15 × 10−3 man Sv. Conservative estimates of maximum annual effective dose equivalents to individuals around Sellafield and Hunterston are 0·2 mSv (in 1982) and 12 μSv (in 1984), respectively. These dose levels do not exceed the limits recommended by ICRP but the former value clearly indicates that, for the larger discharges at least, consideration and optimisation of 14C releases are fully justified. The same 14C measurements are also used to test the validity of two atmospheric dispersion models, the Gaussian plume and the so-called ‘hyperbolic’ models. The former is excellent in predicting downwind 14C levels around Hunterston but is unsatisfactory when applied to Sellafield, whereas the latter proves reliable at both sites. Further investigations suggest that the Gaussian plume model's poor performance at Sellafield can be explained by inaccurate input data.

Abstract:The process and effluent radiation monitoring system can provide information about kinds of the radionuclide and activity concentrations, which is indispensable, important, and peculiar for a nuclear power station compared to a regular thermal power station. On the basis of knowledge about pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and high temperature gascooled reactors (HTGRs), the process and effluent radiation monitoring system of HTR-PM has been designed. It mainly contains several monitoring channels for concerned process systems, certain important areas, and gaseous and liquid effluents. For the coolant is helium and spherical fuel elements containing tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particles are adopted in HTR-PM, the source terms are different from those of PWRs. Not only fission or activation products in the gaseous or liquid form are monitored, but also the radioactive dust in the primary loop is sampled for analysis. The tritium (H-3) and carbon-14 (C-14) are taken a key consideration, which will be sampled in the primary loop, in certain important areas, in the secondary loop, and in the gaseous effluent in the stack. Design features of the process and effluent radiation monitoring system of HTR-PM are introduced and discussed compared to those of PWRs.
Concentration and Distribution of 14 C in Aquatic Envi ronment around Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant

Abstract:In order to study the concentration and distribution of 14 C in aquatic environ‐ment in the vicinity of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) after twenty years’ opera‐tion ,an apparatus extracting dissolved inorganic carbon from water was set up and applied to pretreat the water samples collected around Qinshan NPP .The 14 C concentra‐tion was measured by accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) .The results show that the 14 C specific activities in surface seawater samples range from 196.8 to 206.5 Bq/kg ((203.4 ± 5.6) Bq/kg in average) ,which are close to the background .The 14C concen‐trations in cooling water discharged from Qinshan NPP are close to the 14 C values in near shore seawater samples out of liquid radioactive effluent discharge period .It can be further concluded that the 14 C discharged previously is diluted and diffused well ,and no 14C enrichment in seawater is found .Also ,no obvious increment in the 14C specific activities of surface water and underground water samples are found between Qinshan NPP region and the reference region .

Abstract:The radiological impact of 14C produced by the nuclear fuel cycle is assessed using an advanced 25-box model of the carbon cycle coupled with a range of feasible energy-use scenarios. In particular, this study estimates both the short- and long-term dose implications to the global population. In the former context, it is predicted that the atmospheric 14C specific activity in the year 2050 will be 234 Bq kg−1 (carbon), corresponding to delivery of an individual effective dose equivalent rate of 15 μSv year−1. The contribution of reactor-derived 14C to the individual dose rate increases steadily throughout this period, reaching 1·8 μSv year −1 in 2050, well within ICRP limits. In the longer term, however, the collective effective dose equivalent commitment is conservatively estimated at 141 man Sv TBq−1, corresponding to 480 man Sv (GW(e) year)−1. These figures indicate that 14C could generate one of the largest contributions to the total dose to man from nuclear power production.

Abstract:Carbon-14 and tritium are important radionuclides to be present in gaseous effluents of some nuclear power plants types. Tritium being usually included in gaseous effluents bearing carbon-14, the influence of its presence in the analyzes to be done must carefully be taken into account. When Liquid Scintillation Counting method is used, this influence can't be completely eliminated by selecting different channels only for measuring carbon-14. In this paper, experimental verification of the influence of tritium on the carbon-14 measurements also miscibility of samples, detection efficiency and measurement precision were studied.
