Abstract:Coking wastewater (CWW) is one of the most challenging industrial wastewaters to treat, due to its complex chemical composition, high organic load, and potential toxicity to human and environmental health. A full-scale coking wastewater treatment plant with a two-stage anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic (A1/O1/A2/O2) process was investigated systematically. The experimental results showed that the AOAO process exhibited an excellent removal capacity of COD, ammonia, nitrate, and total nitrogen. The GC x GC-TOF MS analysis investigated that the majority of refractory organic compounds, such as phenols, quinolines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons, etc., were either fully decomposed or exhibited significant decreases in concentration during the full-scale AOAO process, which offered insights to the biodegradation dynamics of CWW organic components. Microbial community analysis showed that bacterial communities were remarkably altered in the four bioreactors of the AOAO process: Proteobacteria dominated during the whole AOAO process, while Nitrospirae and Bacteroidetes enriched in the primary and secondary AO process, respectively. Moreover, metagenomic sequencing found that the relative abundances of amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism in the primary AO process were both higher than that in the secondary AO process. It indicated that as the AOAO process progressed, the changes in operational characteristics could remarkably affect the variations of functional microorganisms responsible for organics and nitrogen removal and metabolic functions of microbial community. Through this study, a comprehensive assessment of the AOAO biological processes of coking wastewater treatment was achieved, which provided valuable insights to the operation and evaluation of relevant real treatment plants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Biological treatment efficiency of coking wastewater is rather poor, especially for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal due to its complex composition and high toxicity.RESULTS: A pilot-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic/oxic (A(2)/O-2) biofilm system has been developed to treat coking wastewater, focusing attention on the COD and NH4+-N removal efficiencies. Operational results over 239 days showed that hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the system had a great impact on simultaneous removals of COD and NH4+-N. At HRT of 116 h, total removal efficiencies of COD and NH4+-N were 92.3% and 97.8%, respectively, reaching the First Grade discharge standard for coking wastewater in China. Adequate HRT, anoxic removal of refractory organics and two-step aerobic bioreactors were considered to be effective measures to obtain satisfactory coking effluent quality using the A(2)/O-2 biofilm system. The correlation between removal characteristics of pollutants and spatial distributions of biomass along the height of upflow bioreactors was also revealed.CONCLUSION: The study suggests that it is feasible to apply the A(2)/O-2 biofilm process for coking wastewater treatment, achieving desirable effluent quality and steady process performance. Abstract:Toxic inhibition and wash-out of nitrifying bacteria in traditional single-activated sludge processes frequently cause instability of nitrification in industrial wastewater treatment and limit the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency. A novel oxic-hydrolytic-oxic (O/H/O) process based on a three-sludge regime was developed to treat coking wastewater with a high C/N ratio and biological toxicity. The results demonstrated that high COD removal (89.6%, 91.3%, 90.4%, and 87.1% in four different modes) was achieved with the complete elimination of phenol, sulfide, total cyanide, and thiocyanate. TN removal varied from 14.0% to 88.7% at an influent flow of 1.6-2.0 kg of COD m(-3) day(-1), depending on prenitrification, internal recycling, and the presence of a sufficient carbon source for denitrification. The first oxic (O1) and hydrolytic (H) reactors made predominant contributions to the removal of organic and toxic pollutants. The removal of these pollutants guaranteed a stable and favorable environment for nitrification in the second oxic (O2) reactor, in which high ammonium removal was observed because of the predominance of Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira. The O/H/O process has the potential to become a promising industrial wastewater treatment process because it promotes functions that are independent of microbial and process stability with respect to the removal of pollutants, especially nitrogen.

Abstract:A step-feed anoxic/oxic/anoxic/oxic (SF-A/O/A/O) was developed and successfully applied to full-scale coking wastewater treatment. The performance and microbial community were evaluated and systematically compared with the anoxic/oxic/oxic (A/O/O) process. SF-A/OA/O process exhibited efficient removal of COD, NH4+-N, TN, phenols, and cyanide with corresponding average effluent concentrations of 317.9, 1.8, 46.2, 1.1, and 0.2 mg·L−1, respectively. In particular, the TN removal efficiency of A/O/O process was only 7.8%, with an effluent concentration of 300.6 mg·L−1. Furthermore, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with high molecular weight were the dominant compounds in raw coking wastewater, which were degraded to a greater extent in SF-A/OA/O. The abundance in Thiobacillus, SM1A02, and Thauera could be the main reason why SF-A/O/A/O was superior to A/O/O in treating TN. The microbial community structure of SF-A/O/A/O was similar among stages in system (P ≥ 0.05, Welch's t-test) and was less affected by environmental factors, which may have been one of the important factors in the system's strong stability.

Abstract:A/O was applied to treat the mixing pharmaceutical wastewater. After 1.5 months, SV could reach 20%similar to 27% stably, the sludge biofloccus shows filemot and a good precipitation performance. The removal rate of COD can basically reach 70%, the removal rate of NH3-N could increase into 60%, the A/O system started successfully. When A/O system run stably, the average removal rate of COD and NH3-N could reach 75% and 55%, respectively.

Abstract:With the effluent water from air-floating equipment of a coking wastewater treatment system as experimental source water,the process characteristics and effect of anoxic reactor in biofilm A2/O2(anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic/aerobic) system was studied based on the pilot-scale experiment.Ceramic pellets were packed in the anoxic reactors with an upflow-filter mode.The results of the study indicated that,anoxic denitrification played a very important role in COD removal from coking wastewater.Denitrification bacteria could use some organic matters which could hardly be degraded by aerobic and anaerobic microoganisms as carbon source,40% of COD could be removed by the denitrification reactor.The carbon source could basiclly satisfy the need for the denitrification of coking wastewater so long as the influent carbon-nitrogen ratio was above 5.The NO3——N volume loading was lower than 0.24 kg/(m3·d) under steady state operation.The hydraulic residence time of the anoxic reactor should be longer than 24 h.When the influent COD and NH3-N concentration of the system were 1 000-2 200,200-400 mg/L respectively,with no dilution,the HRT of the hydrolytic acidification reactor,anoxic reactor,first-stage aerobic reactor and second-stage aerobic reactor were 20,24,48 and 48 h respectively,and at a nitrifying recirculation ratio of 3,the mass concentration of COD and NH3-N in effluent water treated by biofilm A2/O2 system could meet the specification for grade 1 in intergrated wastewater discharge standard(GB 8978-1996).

Abstract:Coking wastewater was treated by A/O process of biological filter with a special kind of carrier. The wastewater contained much more phenolic compounds with about 2000 mg/L of COD and 260 mg/L of NH4+ -N. The A/O system could achieve average removal efficiencies of 87.0% and 91.6% for COD and NH4+ -N, respectively, when HRT was 60 h. The NH4+ -N in the effluent could meet the first level of National Discharge Standard at optimal operation condition. The phenolic compounds with low molecular weight could be fully biodegraded by A/O system. The organic compounds in the effluent were in the relative molecular weight range of 10,000-30,000 and contained --OH, C==O, C--O and phenyl group. Based on the support and protection of the carrier, a great number of microorganisms adhered and immobilized on the outer and inner surface of carrier, which contributed to a simultaneous removal of COD, NH4+ -N and TN. The A/O system biological filter showed a characteristic of steady performance and resistance ability during the operation period.

Abstract:The anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) process is one of the most widely used processes for treating industrial organic wastewater, and it has shown significant effectiveness in the removal of organic compounds, as well as denitrification and phosphorus removal. However, for the treatment of industrial organic wastewater, this anaerobic preposition and aerobic postposition process has exposed various limitations. Therefore, for this type of wastewater, the oxic-hydrolytic and denitrification-oxic (OHO) treatment process has been proposed and developed based on the principles of three-sludge separation and fluidization. This study integrated operational data from 203 coking wastewater treatment plants worldwide, and the two-step nitrification-denitrification activated sludge model No.3 (TCW-ASM3) was used for comparative analysis of the pollutant removal efficiency and total operating cost of the AAO process and the OHO process in the face of characteristic pollutants in coking wastewater. The results indicate that the full-scale OHO process achieved removal efficiencies of up to 3784 mg/L for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 297 mg/L for total nitrogen (TN). The theoretical total cost for OHO and AAO were 9.75 and 14.38 CNY/m3, respectively. The pre-treatment aerobic process effectively reduces the biological toxicity of high-toxicity and refractory industrial wastewater, and the three-sludge system provides a stable living space for functional microorganisms, the combination of multi-mode denitrification processes offers new possibilities for treating similar types of industrial wastewater.

Abstract:The application of advanced biological treatment technology results in improved coking wastewater (CW) effluent quality at lower material and energy input practiced by wastewater treatment plants. In wastewater treatment, the diversity of biological processes combinations affects the variety of microorganisms and biochemical reactions resulting in effluent quality. Four full-scale CW processes, anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/A/O), anoxic-oxic-hydrolytic-oxic (A/O/H/O), anoxic-oxic-oxic (A/O/O), and oxic-hydrolytic-oxic (O/H/O) were compared for their consumption of chemicals and energy, emissions of greenhouse gases, and excess sludge production. A new performance indicator combining the above mentioned parameters was proposed to comprehensively evaluate processes in capacity to CW. The O/ H/O process showed stable and reliable operation with minimum chemicals cost and the average energy consumption, whereas A/A/O at its good performance in TN removal required a large amount of alkaline chemicals to maintain stability. Besides, a substantial addition of chemicals in A/A/O results in larger average amounts of inorganic sludge. Also, the A/A/O process with a single aerobic unit appeared to be incapable of energy saving when dealing with CW rich in nitrogen and poor in phosphorus. The process with dual aerobic units can achieve more complete carbon and nitrogen removal, which is related to the sequence of biochemical reactions. Diverse sequence combinations can create variation in HRT and DO, whereby contaminants proceed through distinct channels of degradation. In the comparative analysis of CWPIs, it could be seen that O/H/O is the biological treatment process with the least equivalent energy consumption input at present thus exhibiting promising application in CW treatment. The A/O/O and A/ O/H/O combinations are good attempts of development; however, more energy-efficient operation modes have to be further investigated. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Coking wastewater has a complex and highly concentrated chemical composition which is toxic and does not biodegrade easily. Treating the organic pollutants in this wastewater is very challenging. The toxic substances in this wastewater make traditional biotechnological treatments inefficient. Current wastewater treatment studies are based on unit processes, and no full process studies could be found. This study used the micro-nanometer catalytic ozonation process as a pretreatment unit, and reverse osmosis membrane treatment as a depth processing unit to improve the effect of the coking wastewater degradation. The micro-nanometer catalytic ozonation pretreatment greatly improves the biodegradability of the coking wastewater and promotes the coking wastewater degradation in the anoxia/anaerobic/oxic (A/A/O) system. The integrated coagulation air flotation-micro-nanometer catalytic ozonation-A/A/O-reverse osmosis membrane system can remove 98% of the chemical oxygen demand, which meets the direct emission standard of the new national standard (China). The dominant genera in the A/A/O biochemical reactor were Thioalkalimicrobium, Proteiniphilum, Azoarcu, Bacillus, Fontibacter, and Taibaiella. This work provides a novel approach for the degradation of high-concentration organic wastewater and lays a solid foundation for the restoration of environmental water bodies.

Abstract:Aeration mode of air was used in the activated sludge tanks of cagnes-sur-Mer WWTP,but the effluent can't reach the standard of France for a lack of dissolved oxygen.To make the effluent reach the standard,a pure oxygen aeration apparatus was installed.The results show the quantity of oxygen in the water increases,sludge bulking is restrained,and the treatment efficiency is improved.

Abstract:The biological treatment of coking wastewater is a challenge. The application of prepositioned aerobic process has rarely been systematically reported, among which the detoxification and nitrification performance of the prepositioned aerobic unit (O1) is worthy of investigation. Results indicate that O1 achieves stable simultaneous detoxification and nitrification by regulating the dissolved oxygen, effectively maintaining ammonification, nitrosation, and complete nitrification phases. Microbial community structure, metabolic pathways and functional genes showed different preferences at different phases. High dissolved oxygen concentrations (2.20-3.00 mg/L) benefited the enrichment of carbon and nitrogen related major metabolic pathways and functional genes. BOD5/CODCr ratio, dissolved oxygen and toxic pollutants together shaped microbial community structure and nitrogen transformation processes. Based on the principle of DO regulation, it could assemble a biotransformation compartment for nitrogen removal from complex wastewaters through a pollutant detoxification mechanism of rapid microbial proliferation，and provides a promising approach for toxic industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Coking wastewater is a typical industrial organic/hard-biodegradable wastewater with complicated components and large discharge amount. This paper introduces the quality and quantity of coking wastewater, the constituents of pollutants, the biodegradation characteristics of organic compounds and the selection of treatment methods. The technical characteristics of A/O, A2/O, A/O2 and O/A/O which have denitrogenation ability were analysed. The biological fluidized bed reactor is effective for the removal of COD and nitrogen. DO, temperature, pH value, nutrition, SRT and toxic/harmful matter which affecting the process of pollutants control were discussed; several projects and processes were compared from the technical aspects and economic differences. The control strategies of some sensitive indicators were introduced. It was pointed out that the technological innovation and policy-related compensation benefit the solving of environmental problem.

Abstract:The anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/A/O) process is the commonly used biological wastewater treatment process, especially for the coking wastewater. However, limit is known about its ability in bio-toxicity removal from wastewater. In this study, we evaluated the performance of A/A/O process in bio-toxicity removal from the coking wastewater, using two test species (i.e. crustacean (Daphnia magna) and zebra fish (Danio rerio)) in respect of acute toxicity, oxidative damage and genotoxicity. Our results showed that the acute toxicity of raw influent was reduced gradually along with A/A/O process and the effluent presented no acute toxicity to Daphnia magna (D. magna) and zebra fish. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in D. magna and zebra fish was promoted by the effluent from each tank of A/A/O process, showing that coking wastewater induced oxidative damage. Herein, the oxidative damage to D. magna was mitigated in the oxic tank, while the toxicity to zebra fish was reduced in the anoxic tank. The comet assays showed that genotoxicity to zebra fish was removed stepwise by A/A/O process, although the final effluent still presented genotoxicity to zebra fish. Our results indicated that the A/A/O process was efficient in acute toxicity removal, but not so effective in the removal of other toxicity (e.g. oxidative damage and genotoxicity). Considering the potential risks of wastewater discharge, further advanced toxicity mitigation technology should be applied in the conventional biological treatment process, and the toxicity index should be introduced in the regulation system of wastewater discharge.
O/H/H/O Process for Total Nitrogen Removal: an Upgrade of the A/A/O Process for Coking Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:For industrial wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen, traditional wastewater treatment processes fail to achieve stable removal of typical pollutants under the conditions of variable raw water quality and low energy consumption. In this study, a novel pre- and post-physicochemical synergistic oxic-hydrolytic and denitrification-hydrolytic and denitrification-oxic (P2PC-O/H/H/O) process with in situ sludge separation in respective bioreactors was developed, in which signature pollutants and TN were completely removed through an optimized allocation of energy and carbon source. The 180-day full-scale operation showed that optimal removal of COD and TN (with removal rates of 97.5 and 94.5%, respectively) can be obtained at influent loading rates of 1.5-1.7 kg COD (m3 days)-1 and 0.11-0.13 kg TN (m3 days)-1. In this process, O1 reactor ensured organic matter removal and pre-nitrification. Double H (H1 and H2) reactors allowed deep removal of TN through combined and coupled denitrification pathways. O2 reactor consolidated the overall treatment performance through decarbonization and nitrification. By P2PC, the refractory and easily biodegradable total organic carbon (TOC) was separated, achieving a qualitative and fractional utilization of electron donors. Analysis of the microbial community in the whole process indicated that Nitrosomonas (0.7-2.4%) and Nitrospira (0.3-1.7%) played a major role in nitrification. Ottowia (15.4-19.6%) and Limnobacter (1.8-7.4%) dominated in eliminating organic matter. The P2PC-O/H/H/O process with a four-sludge regime enabled a spatial allocation of functional microorganisms. The operation cost of the full-scale process was approximately 1.335 USD m-3. In short, this P2PC-O/H/H/O process, with high efficiency and stability in signature pollutant removal, will be a promising wastewater treatment technology to revolutionize the existing anaerobic- anoxic-oxic (A/A/O) process, adding a new dimension to industrial wastewater management.

Abstract:The invention relates to a technique for processing coking waste water, which adopts first grade oxygen deficit plus second grade aerobic biological filter as biological treatment and is coupled with aeration micro-electrolysis materialization processing technology to process the coking waste water. Devices of the technique consists of four reactors; the raw water of the coking waste water after pretreatment enters an oxygen deficit reactor and a second grade aerobic reactor in sequence; effluent after biological treatment enters an aeration micro-electrolysis reactor while effluent after physical treatment returns to the oxygen deficit reactor to form an internal recycle; detailed technique procedure is shown in an instruction book. The invention has the advantages that the reaction system has relatively high volume loading and anti-impact loading capacity, COD, NH3-N and total nitrogen are removed synchronously in the same reactor; the removal rate of COD is more than 93 percent and the removal rate of the NH3-N is more than 96 percent; the invention has relatively high removal capacity of the total nitrogen; the chroma of the effluent is greatly reduced; each effluent index can achieve second grade discharge standard of national waste water comprehensive discharge standards and is close to the requirements of first grade discharge.

Abstract:With the application of the A/O process to treat the coking wastewater,COD and NH3-N,phenol and cyanogen of coking plant wastewater treatment system influent and effluent were detected and analyzed.The results show that removing rate of NH3-N was the highest when wastewater into the treatment system NH3-N concentration range 150mg/L-200mg/L,average NH3-N removal rate reached above 98%.The COD concentrations decreased from 1900~2500mg/L to below 100mg/L after treatment,the value of COD removing rate was above 98%.The phenol removing rate reached 99%.The treated wastewater cyanogen concentrations decreased to less than 0.5 mg/L,cyanogen removal rate reached about78%~84%.
